Barbara J. Maxwell

Aug. 31, 1935 – March 3, 2008

Barbara J. Maxwell, 72, of Greenfield, died March 3 at St. Vincent Heart Hospital in Carmel.

She was born Aug. 31, 1935, in Shelby County, a daughter of the late Oren and Pansey (Stewart) Wickliff.

Mrs. Maxwell was a Greenfield High School graduate. She was a lifelong member of Trinity Park United Methodist Church in Greenfield, where she sang in the choir and was a member of the women’s society. She volunteered at Hancock Regional Hospital and the Hancock County Senior Center.

Survivors include her husband, Larry Maxwell of Greenfield; a son, Doug (wife, Debbie) Maxwell of Greenfield; a sister, Joan (husband, Jerry) Cooney of Springfield, Mo.; a grandson, Chris (wife, Lisa) Tutrow of Greenfield; a granddaughter, Amber Karkowski of Anchorage, Alaska; three great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by two brothers, Chet and David Wickliff.

Funeral services are at 11 a.m. Thursday, March 6, at Trinity Park United Methodist Church in Greenfield with Rev. Michael Manning officiating. Visitation is 4-8 p.m. Wednesday, March 5, at Stillinger Family Funeral Home, Pasco Chapel, in Greenfield.

Edna Pearl Somers

May 30, 1919 – March 3, 2008

Edna Pearl (Shoopman) Somers, 88, died March 3 at Norton Suburban Hospital in Louisville, Ky.

She was born May 30, 1919, in Albany, Ky., a daughter of the late Henry and Martha (Conner) Denney.

Mrs. Somers worked in Louisville for 17 years. She was a member of Grand Avenue Baptist Church and attended Carthage Nazarene Church. She was also a member of Order of the Eastern Star for 50 years.

Survivors include three daughters, Elizabeth (husband, Luther) Isgette of Ft. Lauderdale, Fla., Peggy (husband, Bill) Varble of Mt. Washington, Ky., and Karen (husband, Jerry) Steinberg of Marietta, Ga.; a son, Keith (wife, Betty) Shoopman of Pensacola, Fla.; a stepdaughter, Nancy (husband, Larry) LeMay of Naples, Fla.; 14 grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; two sisters, LuElla Hickerson of Louisville, Ky., and Ida Mae (husband, Jay) Farmer of Albany, Ky.; a daughter-in-law, Shirley Shoopman of New Castle; and several nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by two husbands, Walter Shoopman and Lowell Somers; a son, Kenneth; a sister, Marie Bell; and four brothers, Luther, Ewell, Roy and Hershel Denney.

Funeral services are at 11 a.m. Friday, March 7, at Hinsey-Brown Funeral Service in New Castle with Rev. Gene Bennett and Brother Tone officiating. Burial will follow in South Mound Cemetery, West Lawn Addition, in New Castle. Visitation is 4-8 p.m. Thursday, March 6, at the funeral home.

James R. Graham

Dec. 17, 1935 – March 3, 2008

James R. Graham, 72, of Lewisville, died March 3 at St. Vincent’s Hospital in Indianapolis.

He was born Dec. 17, 1935, in Henry County, a son of the late Horace and Mae (Knotts) Graham.

Mr. Graham grew up in Lewisville and graduated from Lewisville High School in 1954. He served in the U.S. Army from 1955-57. He lived in Indianapolis for many years, where he and his wife, Marlene, owned and operated Equalizeer, Inc., a tax consulting and accounting firm. He married the former Marlene May on Jan. 15, 1945 at Ebenezer Baptist Church near Lewisville. Mr. Graham was a member of the O.O.I.D.A.

Survivors include a son, Jeff Graham of Greenfield; a daughter, Terri Graham of Fishers; two grandchildren; and a sister, Delores Hansen of Bradenton, Fla.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Paul Graham; and his father-in-law and mother-in-law, Guy LeRoy and Marcile O. (Buchannan) May.

Private funeral services were March 7 at Ebenezer Presbyterian Church near Lewisville with Rev. Marion L. Hickman officiating. Cremation followed at the Eastern Indiana Crematory in Lewisville. Marshall & Erlewein Funeral Home in Lewisville handled arrangements.

Nadine May

Jan. 23, 1916 – March 4, 2008

Nadine May, 92, of Lewisville, died March 4 at Stonebrooke Rehabilitation Center in New Castle.

She was born Jan. 23, 1916, in Rush County, a daughter of the late Wilbur and Nellie (Garver) May.

Miss May graduated was a 1934 Raleigh High School graduate. She worked as a caregiver and teachers’ aid in Henry County schools. Miss May lived in New Lisbon for a number of years prior to moving to Lewisville in 1962. She was a member of Ebenezer Presbyterian Church.

Survivors include two nieces, Beverly (husband, Randy) Watters of Indianapolis and Marlene Graham of Fishers; three nephews, Jack L. (wife, Pat) May of Blandon, Pa., Lowell May of Riley, Kan., and George May of Hagerstown; and several great-nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by three brothers, Guy LeRoy, Vinton and Arthur May; and two infant siblings, Ross and Maxine.

Funeral services were March 7 at Ebenezer Presbyterian Church, southeast of Lewisville, with Rev. Marion L. Hickman officiating. Burial followed at Lewisville Cemetery. Visitation was at 10 a.m. until time of services on March 7. Marshall & Erlewein Funeral Home handled arrangements.

Earl R. Whisler

March 30, 1921 – March 6, 2008

Earl R. “Shorty” Whisler, 86, of Shirley, died March 6 at his home.

He was born March 30, 1921, in Wilkinson, a son of the late Willis “Shorty” and Bessie (Bennett) Whisler.

Mr. Whisler worked for Gas America for 52 years. He enjoyed mowing his yard, spending time with his family, boating and camping.

Survivors include his wife, Celia (Shelley) Whisler; a daughter, Pam Elliott of Summerfield, Fla.; five grandchildren, Cindy (Whisler) Glisson of Kennard, Brian Wisehart of Kokomo, Tracy (Wisehart) Austin of Shirley, Chad Whisler of Muncie and Bobby Elliott of Summerfield, Fla.; and five great-grandchildren.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by five sisters; two brothers (one a twin, Earl); two sons, Allen and Wayne; and two great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were March 10 at Condo & Son Funeral Home in Wilkinson with Jim Jackson officiating. Burial followed at McCray Cemetery in Wilkinson. Visitation was March 9 at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association of Indiana.

Alta F. Magee

May 11, 1947 – March 8, 2008

Alta F. “Francie” Magee, 60, of Greensboro died March 8 at Henry County Memorial Hospital in New Castle.

She was born May 11, 1947, in Carthage, a daughter of the late Merrill “Bill” and Elsie (Blackburn) Magee.

Miss Magee was a 1965 Carthage High School graduate. She later graduated from Indiana Wesleyan University with bachelor’s and master’s degrees in business administration. She retired from BMG/Thompson Consumer Electronics (formerly RCA) in Indianapolis after 29 years. For the past six years, she was employed by the Internal Revenue Service. She was a member of Shirley United Methodist Church and Shirley Order of the Eastern Star #492.

Survivors include two sisters, Phyllis (husband, Gerald L.) Mayberry of Carthage and Karen E. (husband, Joseph L.) Renfro of Greenfield; four brothers, George M. (wife, Sue A.) Magee of Knightstown, Michael O. (wife, Pam) Magee of Knightstown, James D. (wife, Brenda) Magee of Carthage and Charles L. “Chuck” Magee of Greensboro; several nieces and nephews; and several great-nieces, great-nephews and cousins.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by two brothers, Merrill “Stanley” Magee and Richard “Dick” Magee; and two sisters, Esther and Juanita Magee.

Funeral services are at 11 a.m. Thursday, March 13, at Hinsey-Brown Funeral Service in Knightstown. Burial will follow in Riverside Cemetery in Carthage. Visitation is 4-8 p.m. Wednesday, March 12, at the funeral home. Eastern Star services will take place at 7:30 p.m. Memorial contributions may be made to the Rush County Cancer Society or the Rush County Heart Society.

Scott E. Cotton

June 3, 1922 – March 8, 2008

Scott E. Cotton, 85, of Greenfield, died March 8 at Springhurst Health Campus in Greenfield.

He was born June 3, 1922, in Indianapolis, a son of the late Herschel Cotton and Flora Elizabeth (Huestis) England.

A former Brown County and Franklin resident, Mr. Cotton married the former Kathleen Wilson on July 15, 1943. He served with U.S. Navy’s Seabees during World War II. Mr. Cotton owned and operated Scottie’s Body Shop in Indianapolis and, later, General Rental Center in Franklin.

Survivors include two sons, Scott E. Cotton of Brown County and Sam E. (wife, Brenda) Cotton of Knightstown; three grandchildren, Scott Cotton, Shaw (wife, Jennifer) Cotton and Stuart Cotton; four great-grandchildren; and a brother, Gerald England of Brown County.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Kathleen; and two brothers, Walter Johnson and Marion England.

Funeral services were March 12 at Flinn & Maguire Funeral Home in Franklin with Rev. Richard Thayer officiating. Burial will follow at Greenlawn Cemetery in Franklin. Visitation is 11 a.m. until time of service on Wednesday, March 12, at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society.
