Auda Helen Tevis, 64, of Shelbyville, died February 19 at Heritage House in Shelbyville.
She was born Dec. 14, 1943, in Rushville, a daughter of the late Aaron and Lula (Statom) True.
Mrs. Tevis graduated from Shelbyville High School in 1962. She worked at Major Hospital for 20 years, retiring in 1992. She was a member of West Street United Methodist Church, the Gingham Gals Homemakers Club and the Shelbyville Jayshees. Mrs. Tevis enjoyed traveling with her husband, attending yard sales, attending church and spending time with her grandchildren.
Survivors include her husband, Stephan Tevis of Shelbyville; her mother-in-law, Lucy Saunders of Shelbyville; two daughters, Stephanie (husband, Lonnie) McQueary of Fairland and Angela (husband, Brad) Stafford of Shelbyville; a brother, James (wife, Marcella) True of Louisville, Ky.; three sisters, Ida (husband, Joseph K.) Knott of Knightstown, Jean (husband, Teddy) DeWees of Eaton and Betty Phyllis Russell of Houstonville, Ky.; six grandchildren, Ashley, Brandon and Cody McQueary and Steve, Travis and Mason Stafford.
Funeral services were February 23 at Glenn E. George & Son Funeral Home in Shelbyville with Rev. Glenn Coffey officiating. Burial followed in Bennett Cemetery. Visitation was February 22 at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of South Central Indiana.
Delphina Mae Elliott
June 8, 1906 – Feb. 28, 2008
Delphina Mae (Addison) Elliott, 101, of Arlington, died February 28 at Miller’s Merry Manor in Rushville.
She was born June 8, 1906, in Hancock County, a daughter of the late Charles T. and Beulah (Collins) Addison.
Mrs. Elliott spent most of her life in Posey Township, Rush County, except for a few months at her place of birth. She married Cecil E. Elliott on Dec. 19, 1966. She was employed at the old Arlington Bank and Arlington State Bank for over 23 years. Mrs. Elliott was a member of Arlington Christian Church since 1924. She was a past member of Kappa Kappa Sigma and served as state treasurer of the organization. She was also active in Business and Professional Women (BPW) and the Home Helpers Club.
Survivors include four nieces, Amy (husband, Joseph) Licameli; Nan Prout; Dr. Rita Addison and Sarah (husband, Michael) Prout.
Graveside funeral services were March 3 at Glen Cove Cemetery in Knightstown with Pastor Bob Brock officiating. Visitation was March 2 at Todd Funeral Home in Rushville.
Doris L. Howard
March 7, 1926 – Feb. 28, 2008
Doris L. Howard, 81, of Greenfield, died February 28 at Hancock Regional Hospital in Greenfield.
She was born March 7, 1926, in Damascus, Va., a daughter of the late Walter and Bessie (Matherly) Parker.
Mrs. Howard was a secretary at Chrysler Corp. for 30 years. She was a member of Knightstown United Methodist Church and attended Bradley United Methodist Church. She was also a member of the Red Hat Society. Mrs. Howard enjoyed volunteering to read books to elementary school students.
Survivors include a son, John (wife, Jackie) Howard of Greencastle; two granddaughters, Jessica and Janelle; and a great-granddaughter, Gretchen.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Arch Howard.
Funeral services were March 4 at Stillinger Family Funeral Home, Pasco Chapel, in Greenfield with Rev. Terry Campbell officiating. Burial followed at Mt. Summit Cemetery. Visitation was March 3 at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society, 6030 W. 62nd St., Indianapolis, IN 46278.
Robert Edward Berry
Dec. 10, 1927 – Feb. 29, 2008
Robert Edward Berry, 80, of Rushville, died Feb. 29, 2008, at Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis.
He was born Dec. 10, 1927, in Rush County, a son of the late Lloyd and Crystal (Myers) Berry.
Mr. Berry married Martha M. Thompson on Dec. 31, 1947. He was a powerhouse engineer at the Carthage Container Corp. for 43 years. Mr. Berry was a U.S. Navy veteran having served in World War II. He was a member of VFW, American Legion and Moose Lodge, where he was a past governor.
Survivors include his wife, Martha of Rushville; two sons, Danny (wife, Sheila) Berry and Mark Allen (wife, Julie) Berry, both of Rushville; three daughters, Vicky Kidd, Deama Kay Maupin, both of Rushville and Tracie (husband, Bill) Hankins of Indianapolis; a brother, Norville Berry of Des Moines, Iowa; 11 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by three brothers and a sister.
Funeral services were March 4 at Todd Funeral Home in Rushville with Pastor Charles Justice officiating. Visitation was March 4 at the funeral home. Military graveside rites were conducted at Rushville East Hill Cemetery.
Joanne Briggeman
May 6, 1927 - March 1, 2008
Joanne (Tweedy) Briggeman, 80, of Fort Wayne, formerly of Carthage, died March 1.
She was born May 6, 1927, in Carthage, a daughter of the late Ross and Mary (Fort) Tweedy.
Mrs. Briggeman moved to Fort Wayne in 1957. She attended St. Mary’s College and graduated from Purdue University in 1960. She was a registered dietician and consulted for several nursing homes, including Towne House and Allen County Home. She also volunteered at St. Joseph Hospital Christmas Bureau and the Philharmonic Volunteers. She was a member of the Fort Wayne Art Alliance and The Art League, the Marlans, St. Mary’s Alumni Club and St. Vincent dePaul Parish.
Survivors include her husband, Donald Briggeman; three sons, Frederick Briggeman of Indianapolis, James Briggeman of San Diego, Cal., and John Briggeman of Fort Wayne; a daughter, Susan of Dallas, Texas; a brother, Jack Tweedy of Knightstown; and seven grandchildren.
A funeral mass was held March 5 at St. Vincent dePaul Catholic Church in Fort Wayne. Burial followed in Catholic Cemetery. Visitation was March 2 at D.O. McComb & Sons Pine Valley Park Funeral Home in Fort Wayne. Memorial contributions may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association, northern Indiana chapter.
Dwight Hopkins
May 31, 1929 – March 2, 2008
Dwight Hopkins, 78, of Shelbyville, died March 2 at Heritage House Convalescent Center in Shelbyville.
He was born May 31, 1929, in Rush County, a son of the late Albert and Leona (Shafer) Hopkins.
Mr. Hopkins attended Spiceland High School. He married Evelyn Reed on Nov. 30, 1948. He was a truck driver for Knightstown Elevator, and he also worked as a body man at Goodwin Inc. in Knightstown.
Survivors include a daughter, Marsha (husband, Steve) Perkinson of Indianapolis; a grandson, Bryan (wife, Linda) McMahan of Carthage; a sister, Harriet (husband, Dale) Green of Middletown; and several nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Evelyn; two brothers; and two sisters.
Private funeral services will take place at Freeman Family Funeral Home, Carmony-Ewing Harrison Street Chapel, in Shelbyville. Burial will take place in Glen Cove Cemetery in Knightstown.
Larry D. Saunders
Sept. 27, 1943 – March 1, 2008
Larry D. Saunders, 64, of Greenfield, died March 1 at Hancock Regional Hospital in Greenfield
He was born Sept. 27, 1943, in Indianapolis, a son of the late Leo Saunders and Eleanor (White) Saunders.
Mr. Saunders was a 1961 Hancock Central High School graduate. He retired from Delco Remy in 1993. After retirement, he continued to work on his family’s farm. He enjoyed collecting antique tractors and going to farm sales. He also enjoyed watching his granddaughters show their dairy goats each summer. He married Vicki (Eakin) Saunders on July 28, 1962.
Survivors include two daughters, Amberlee (husband, Chris) Hudson of Greenfield and Shana Wolfenberger of Greenfield; his mother, Eleanor Saunders of Greenfield; three granddaughters, Ashton Hudson, Savannah Hudson and Zoey Wolfenberger, all of Greenfield.
In addition to his father, he was preceded in death by his wife, Vicki.
Funeral services are at 10 a.m. Thursday, March 6, at Condo & Son Funeral Home in Wilkinson with Revs. Terry Campbell and Mike Manning officiating. Visitation is 4-8 p.m. Wednesday, March 5, at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to Star Financial Bank in care of Larry and Vicki Saunders’ granddaughters’ educational fund.
Stuart W. Maynard
Aug. 1, 1955 – March 2, 2008
Stuart W. Maynard died March 2.
He was born on Aug. 1, 1955, in Tulsa, Okla., a son of Byron W. and Luella “Bill” Maynard.
Mr. Maynard married the former Bonita “Bennie” Camden in Eniel, Okla. He was a heavy equipment operator and truck driver for Hagerstown Gravel and Construction. He attended Crossroads Church in New Castle. Mr. Maynard served on the board of directors of the Midwest Field Trial Circuit. He was a member of the Boiler Makers Union, Son of the American Legion and the Eagles and Elks lodges.
Survivors include his wife, Bennie Maynard of Hagerstown; his mother, “Bill” Maynard of Pawhuska, Okla.; three brothers, Jimmy, Larry and Barney; and several nieces and nephews.
In addition to his father, he was preceded in death by three brothers, Shelby, Ronnie and Bobby Maynard.
Funeral services are at 8 p.m. Thursday, March 6, at Condo & Son Funeral Home in Wilkinson. Visitation is 5 p.m. until time of services on Thursday, March 6, at the funeral home.
