Pat Souder, 94, of Greenfield, died December 24 at Ellison House in Greenfield.
She was born Dec. 27, 1914, in Greenfield, a daughter of the late Leonard and Myrtle (Scott) Reese.
A Greenfield High School graduate, Mrs. Souder was bookkeeper and secretary for Souder Farms and several other family business ventures. She was a member of Curry’s Chapel United Methodist Church, Greenfield and Eden Order of the Eastern Star and the Indiana Charolais Association.
Survivors include two daughters, Pattee Yater and Loretta Pope, both of Greenfield; two sisters, Ruth Williams of Frankfort and Marjorie Wille of Pennsylvania; four grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, James E. Souder; a grandson, Sam Yater; and two sisters, Esther Oakes and Frances Merchant.
Funeral services were December 28 at Stillinger Family Funeral Home, Pasco Chapel, in Greenfield. Burial followed at Park Cemetery in Greenfield. Visitation was December 27 at the funeral home. Dewey Harold Gillam
June 8, 1921 – Dec. 27, 2007
Dewey Harold Gillam, 86, of Anderson, died December 27 at his home.
He was born June 8, 1921, in Breholm, W.V., a son of the late Charles and Pearlie (Barker) Gillam.
Mr. Gillam worked at Delco-Remy in Anderson as a machinist before retiring. He married Nancy Haney on Oct. 16, 1943. He was a member of Bethany Baptist Church in Anderson, where he lived for 40 years.
Survivors include four sons, Victor Gillam of Anderson, Ray (wife, Patty) Gillam of Knightstown, Ralph (wife, Sheryl) Gillam of Kempton and Bill (wife, Carol) Gillam of Elwood.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife; two sons, Bill and Jessie Gillam; two brothers; and four sisters.
Funeral services were December 31 at Todd Funeral Home in Knightstown with Brother Tim Dice officiating. Burial followed at Glen Cove Cemetery in Knightstown. Visitation was December 30 at the funeral home.
Fred W. Murray
May 2, 1916 – Dec. 30, 2007
Fred W. Murray, 91, of Knightstown, died December 30 at Glen Oaks Health Campus in New Castle.
He was born May 2, 1916, in Hayesville, N.C., a son of the late Edd and Belle (Waldroup) Murray.
Mr. Murray retired from Delco Remy in Anderson after 38 years of service. He was also a retired farmer. A Hayesville (N.C.) High School graduate, he also attended Young Harris College, in Young Harris, Ga., for two years. He was a 50-year member of Knightstown Masonic Lodge #16, Shirley Order of the Eastern Star #492 and the Commandry and York Rite. Mr. Murray was also a member of Knightstown United Methodist Church for over 60 years. An avid, life-long coon hunter and sportsman, he was also a member of the Wilkinson Brotherhood and Sisterhood. He enjoyed spending time with his family, horses, dogs and kids. He also enjoyed traveling.
Survivors include his wife, Eileen Murray of Knightstown; three daughters, Dee Anne (husband, Richard) Wilkinson of Anderson, Marka (husband, Larry) Eckhardt of Darlington, S.C., and Freda (husband, Daniel) Dudley of Wilkinson; eight grandchildren, David Wilkinson, Gretchen (husband, Kelly) Cunningham, Elisa (husband, Tony) Baker, Lara (husband, Shane) Mathis, Rhett (wife, Jen) Eckhardt, Kyle (wife, Laura) Dudley, Andrew (wife, Mandy) Dudley and Kelly Dudley; 11 great-grandchildren; a brother, Ray (wife, Carol) Murray of North Carolina; five stepchildren, Marsha (husband, Gail) Barnard of New Castle, Nancy (husband, Phil) Harrold of Noblesville, Peggy Muncy of New Castle, Duane (wife, Belinda) Kissick of Greensboro and Mary (husband, Tony) Cox of Osgood; 24 stepgrandchildren; and 19 stepgreat-grandchildren.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife, Anna Faye Murray; two brothers, Mark and Carl Murray; and a sister, Lois Berry.
Funeral services are at 10 a.m. Thursday, January 3, at Knightstown United Methodist Church with Rev. Janice Heseman officiating. Burial will follow at Glen Cove Cemetery in Knightstown. Visitation is 3-7 p.m. on Wednesday, January 2, at Condo & Son Funeral Home in Wilkinson. Masonic and Eastern Star services will take place at 7 p.m. Memorial contributions may be made to the Knightstown United Methodist Church Memorial Fund.
Bertha Seely
April 7, 1928 – Jan. 2, 2008
Bertha (Whisler) Seely, 79, of Greenfield, died January 2 at her home.
She was born April 7, 1928, in Wilkinson, a daughter of the late Willis “Shorty” and Bessie (Bennett) Whisler.
Mrs. Seely was a Wilkinson High School and Anderson School of Cosmetology graduate. She was an active member of Westland Friends Church and the Westland Ladies Guild.
Survivors include her husband, Robert Dale Seely of Greenfield; two daughters, Vicki Reeves and Jo Ann (husband, John) Holt, both of Greenfield; a son, Robert Seely of Greenfield; a sister, Jean Richardson of Georgia; a brother, Earl Whisler of Shirley; seven grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a daughter, Barbara Patton; a son-in-law, Ron Patton; and a grandson, Jesse Reeves.
Braden E. Westmoreland
March 18, 2002 – Jan. 2, 2008
Braden E. Westmoreland, 5, of Carthage, died January 2 at his home.
He was born March 18, 2002, in Greenfield, the son of Ashley Watkins.
Westmoreland was known as an energetic, spontaneous, compassionate and loving little boy. He enjoyed spending time outdoors, playing with his little brother and trading toys. His favorites were Spiderman and Harry Potter. Westmoreland enjoyed school and going to church. An inquisitive youngster, he enjoyed mowing on the tractor with his grandfather.
Survivors include his mother, Ashley (companion, Josh Davis) Watkins of Carthage; a brother, Kyler Davis of Carthage; maternal grandmother, Brenda (husband, Phillip) Beaty of Franklin; paternal grandparents, Glenn and Angie Davis of Carthage; step-grandmother Michelle Livesay of New Palestine; maternal great-grandparents, John and Ruby Griffith of Greenfield; paternal great-grandparents, Jim and Betty Griffin of Carthage and Virginia Davis of Carthage; and several aunts, uncles and cousins.
Funeral services were January 5 at Carthage Wesleyan Church with Rev. Charles Stroud officiating. Burial followed at Carthage Cemetery. Visitation was January 5 at the church. Memorial contributions may be made to the Braden Westmoreland Memorial Fund with accounts at First Financial Bank in Carthage (in care of Josh Davis) or Greenfield Banking Company (in care of Ashley Watkins). Hinsey-Brown handled arrangements.
Janet Marie Bradway
April 8, 1950 – Jan. 4, 2008
Janet Marie Bradway, 57, of Greenfield, died January 4 at Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis.
She was born April 8, 1950, in Waukegan, Ill., a daughter of the late Eugene and Mildred (Kitchen) Clemons.
Mrs. Bradway was a 1968 South Bend Riley High School graduate. She then attended Indiana State University. She married Jim Bradway on Feb. 21, 1970. Mrs. Bradway worked at Greenfield Middle School as a library assistant for many years and also worked at H&R Block. She served on the executive board of the Southern Baptist Convention of Indiana and also served as a Sunday school teacher and women’s group leader. In addition, she served as clerk and treasurer at Knightstown’s First Baptist Church and was a member of the Greenfield Chapter of Questors.
Survivors include her husband, Jim, of Greenfield; three children, Ken (wife, Marcy) Bradway of Wilkinson, Christy (husband, Shane) Borders of Dayton, Ohio, and Misty (husband, Mike) Hennie of Bloomfield; five grandchildren, Brooke Bradway, Kaz Borders and Gabe, Anna and Abby Hennie; and three sisters, Joyce Baxter of Titusville, Ga., Charlene Spritzer and Lori Clemons, both of San Diego, Cal.
She was preceded in death by her parents.
Funeral services were January 8 at Calvary Baptist Church in Greenfield with Dr. Steve Davis officiating. Visitation was January 7 at Erlewein Mortuary in Greenfield. Additional visitation took place January 8 at the church. Memorial contributions may be made at www.caringbridge.com.
Rowena Shipp
Feb. 25, 1930 – Jan. 4, 2008
Rowena Shipp, 77, died January 4 at The Waters in New Castle.
She was born Feb. 25, 1930, in Kennard, a daughter of the late James Hugh and Nellie Rose (White) Knowling.
Mrs. Shipp spent her entire life in Henry County. She married Carl H. Shipp on Nov. 17, 1956, at Sugar Grove Methodist Church in New Castle by Rev. Cecil Reece, Jr. Mrs. Shipp graduated from Kennard High School in 1947. She served as office manager at Goodwin Brothers Automobile Company for 35 years, retiring in 1993. Mrs. Shipp was a member of Shirley-Wilkinson Community United Methodist Church, where she was secretary and treasurer. She also served as president of the United Methodist Women, was a Sunday school teacher and Chancel Choir member. She was also past matron and grand representative of Shirley Order of the Eastern Star #492. Mrs. Shipp was also a member of the Alpha Club, “Crafters” sewing group and the Red Hat Society.
Survivors included her self-adopted daughter, Francis Magee of New Castle; two sisters-in-law; and several nieces and nephews, cousins and friends.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband; four brothers; and two sisters.
Funeral services are at 2 p.m. Saturday, January 12 at Hinsey-Brown Funeral Service in Knightstown with Rev. Kurt T. Stone officiating. Burial will follow at Hicksite Cemetery in Greensboro. Visitation is 3-8 p.m. Friday, January 11, at the funeral home. Order of the Eastern Star services will take place at 7:30 p.m. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society or Shirley-Wilkinson Community United Methodist Church with envelopes available at the funeral home.
