Indiana Marriages, 1780-1992

Pamela Sue Grizzell

Aug. 19, 1948 – Sept. 13, 2007

Pamela Sue Grizzell, 59, of Shirley, died September 13 at her home.

She was born Aug. 19, 1948, in New Castle, a daughter of the late Willard McDonald and Lora (Plank) McDonald.

Mrs. Grizzell married Donald Wayne Grizzell on Sept. 23, 1965. She was a supervisor at Indiana Knitware.

Survivors include her mother, Lora Ileta McDonald of Knightstown; her husband, Donald Grizzell of Shirley; a son, Jeffery Wayne (wife, Anna) Grizzell of Carthage; a daughter, Kathy (husband, Curtis) Furlow of Houston, Tex.; a brother, Keven (wife, Tracy) McDonald of New Castle; a sister, Sheryl (husband, Randy) Rummel of Knightstown; and three grandchildren.

In addition to her father, she was preceded in death by a sister.

There were no public funeral services and no public visitation. Cremation was arranged by Todd Funeral Home in Knightstown.

Allen “Satch” Sanders

Aug. 22, 1957 – Sept. 12, 2007

Allen “Satch” Sanders, 50, of Carthage, died September 12 at Hancock Regional Hospital in Greenfield.

He was born Aug. 22, 1957, in Rushville, a son of James B. Sanders and the late Patty Sanders.

Mr. Sanders was Print Communications employee in Indianapolis. He was an avid NASCAR fan.

Survivors include a son, Ryan Sanders of Greenfield; his father, James B. Sanders of Carthage; three brothers, Bob Stevens of New Castle, Mike Williams of Palm Harbor, Fla., and James E. Sanders of Greenfield; and several nieces and nephews.

In addition to his mother, he was preceded in death by his grandparents, Felix and Chlora Sanders.

Funeral services were September 14 at Hinsey-Brown Funeral Service in Knightstown. Burial followed in Carthage Cemetery. Visitation was September 14 at the funeral home.

Lund Infant

The infant son of J. Matthew and Amanda J. Lund of Dayton, Ohio, will be interred at Riverside Cemetery in Carthage on Saturday, September 22.

Paternal grandparents are Mr. and Mrs. Gregg Lund of Muncie. Maternal grandparents are Mr. and Mrs. Philip McMullen of Carthage.

James A. Chew

Sept. 1972 – Sept. 23, 2007

James A. Chew, 35, of Kennard, formerly of Knightstown, died September 23 at his home.

He was born Sept. 19, 1972, in Rushville, a son of the late Ralph E. Chew and Judith A. Chew of Knightstown.

Mr. Chew was a lifelong mechanic and a Knightstown High School graduate. He earned an Associates of Science degree from Lincoln Technical Institute in Indianapolis. Mr. Chew managed American Eagle diesel repair business in Mt. for several years. He married Lori A. Lukens on April 1, 1994. An avid reader, he also enjoyed fishing, hunting and debating. Always known as a helpful and giving person, he enjoyed spending time with his family and helping others with their automobiles.

Survivors include his wife, Lori, of Kennard; two sons: Adam C. Chew and R. Gage King of Kennard; his mother: Judy Chew of Knightstown; three brothers: Max, Tim and Kevin Chew all of Knightstown; a sister: Ruth Dudley of Knightstown; several aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his father: Ralph E. Chew; a brother: Kenneth; a sister: Laura; his grandparents; and several aunts, uncles and cousins.

Visitation is Thursday, September 27, from 2-6 p.m. at Hinsey-Brown Funeral Home in Knightstown. Funeral services will follow at with Pastor Roger Campbell officiating. Memorial contributions may be made to Lori Chew, Adam Chew and Gage King in care of Americana Bank.

Tempa Elizabeth Gorman

Dec. 12, 1921 – Sept. 22, 2007

Tempa Elizabeth Gorman, 85, of Rushville, died September 22 at Miller’s Merry Manor in Rushville.

She was born Dec. 12, 1921, in Harris, Ky., a daughter of the late John Howard and Ella (Mawk) Howard.

Mrs. Gorman married Thomas Gorman on March 31, 1941. She and her husband owned The Northend Grocery in Carthage and operated Gorman’s Rest Home in Milroy for many years. She was employed at RCA in Indianapolis. Mrs. Gorman served as a welder in Baltimore Md., during World War II. Her favorite hobbies were crossword puzzles, cake decorating, crocheting, sewing and growing flowers.

Survivors include her husband, Thomas M. Gorman, Sr., of Carthage; three sons, Thomas M. (wife, Betty) Gorman, Jr., of Adah, Penn., James D. (wife, Sondra) Gorman and Michael J. (wife, Marsha) Gorman, both of Carthage; three daughters, Brenda J. (husband, Bill) Merrel of Rushville, Ramona D. (husband, Sam) Cooper of Spring Hill, Fla., and Deanna L. (husband, Steve) Morgan of Milroy; a brother, Jess Howard of Vanceburg, Ky.; 21 grandchildren; 36 great-grandchildren; and nine great-great-grandchildren.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by four sisters, Stella Hamilton, Bessie Gorman, Omadee Plank and Flora Magee; five brothers, Lee Howard, Less Howard, John Howard, Connor Howard and Gilbert Howard; and two great-grandchildren.

Funeral services are at 2 p.m. Wednesday, September 26, at Todd Funeral Home in Knightstown with Gregory Howard officiating. Burial will follow in Glen Cove Cemetery. Visitation was September 25 at the funeral home.

Billy A. Watkins

April 22, 1915 – Sept. 21, 2007

Billy A. Watkins, 92, of Muncie, formerly of New Castle, died September 21 in Muncie.

He was born April 22, 1915, in Burnside, Ky., a son of the late Albert and Norma (Carter) Watkins.

Mr. Watkins spent most of his life in the New Castle area and attended New Castle schools. In his younger years, he worked at Ingersoll Steel in New Castle, his farm in Carthage and his job as weigh-master at the Indianapolis Stockyards. A residence hall was named after him at Camp Atterbury, where he was a hall director with the Job Corps. Mr. Watkins retired in 1977 as head of security and special deputy at Dogpatch in Jasper, Ark. He served as director of REMC for six years while living in Brown County and he was a lifelong member of Disabled American Veterans. He was also a member of the New Castle American Legion. Mr. Watkins was also a 32nd degree Mason and a member of the Scottish Rite. He married his wife, Kitty, on Dec. 21, 1935, in Indianapolis.

Mr. Watkins served as a paratrooper in the 511th P.I.R., attached to the 11th Airborne during World War II. He was known as the youngest professional boxer to hold a license in Indiana. A well-known boxer in this state, he boxed all over the Midwest. He enjoyed talking about one of his fights, which the late Jack Dempsey officiated in Richmond in 1932. He also enjoyed tell stories about his days of “riding the rails” during the depression. He visited every state west of the Mississippi River before he was 16. He was known as a fun loving father, grandfather, great-grandfather, son, brother and pal.

Survivors include his wife, Catherine M. “Kitty” (Huffman) Watkins; two sons, Patrick (wife, Glenda) Watkins of Sheridan, Ill., and Michael Watkins of Tucson, Ariz.; five grandchildren, Patrick (wife, Mona) Watkins of Basel, Suisse, Jerry (wife, Christine) Watkins of Cincinnati, Ohio, Terri Conklin of Hanover, Ill., Kelli (husband, Greg) Kosobud of Coatesville, and Lana (husband, Bruce) Tuftie of Newport News, Va.; 11 great-grandchildren, Sean and Dean Watkins, Daniel, Nicholas and Annemarie Watkins, Tiffany and Eric Conklin, Shane and Jayde Kosobud and Jack and Claire Tuftie; a brother, Paul Watkins of Seymour; and two nephews, Steve and Richard Watkins.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Robert Watkins.

Funeral services were September 25 at Hinsey-Brown Funeral Service with Pastor Charlie Shield officiating. Burial followed in South Mound Cemetery in New Castle. Visitation was September 25 at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to the Alzheimer's Association with envelopes available at the funeral home.

Douglas Lyle Plank

July 9, 1957 – Nov. 30, 2007

Douglas Lyle Plank, 50, of Knightstown, died September 30 at Community Hospital East in Indianapolis.

He was born July 9, 1957, in Rushville, a son of Lyle O. and Gloria L. (Magee) Plank.

A former truck driver, Mr. Plank was an avid sports fan and a follower of the Cincinnati Reds baseball and the Knightstown Panther football teams. He enjoyed writing poetry, traveling, painting and playing and listening to piano music. Mr. Plank also enjoyed nature and was known as an adventurous, but compassionate person.

Survivors include his parents, Lyle and Gloria Plank of Greenfield; six children, Jennifer E. (fiance, Keith Greer) Plank of Anderson; Eliza Ann Plank of Greenfield, Forrest (wife, Kelly) Plank of Greenfield, Kaleb R. Plank of Shelbyville, Austin T. Plank and Zachary D. Plank, both of Mays; a sister, Kim (husband, John) Lowe of New Palestine; four grandchildren, Vanessa, Jackson, Vincent and Payton; and several aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins.

Funeral services are at 2 p.m. Thursday, October 4, at Hinsey-Brown Funeral Service in Knightstown with Pastor Brian Campbell officiating. Burial will follow in Glen Cove Cemetery in Knightstown. Visitation is 4-8 p.m. Wednesday, October 3, at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the American Kidney Association or the Knightstown High School Athletic Department with envelopes available at the funeral home.
