Melvin W. Zimmerman

Melvin W. Zimmerman, 47, a lifelong Carthage resident, died August 12 at his home.
He was born Sept. 6, 1959, in Rushville, a son of the late Melvin Zimmerman and Ruby Zimmerman.
Mr. Zimmerman worked for 22 years at McGraw Industries and Shares in Rushville. He was a member of East Street Christian Church in Carthage. He attended special education classes in New Castle and he graduated from there.
Survivors include his mother, Ruby Zimmerman of Carthage; a sister, Penny (husband, Kenneth) Lawson of Rushville; a nephew, Joshua (wife, LaTrisha) Crousore-Herber of Greenfield; and a step-niece, Suzanne Lawson of New Castle.
Funeral services were August 17 at East Street Christian Church in Carthage with Rev. David Bonne officiating. Burial followed at Glen Cove Cemetery in Knightstown. Visitation was at the church. Todd Funeral Home handled arrangements.
Joel Thomas Engle

Joel Thomas Engle, infant son of Greg and Elizabeth (Worley) Engle of Greenfield, died August 16 at Community Hospital North in Indianapolis.
He and his family are members of Bethel Baptist Church in Greenfield.
Survivors include a brother, Noah Engle; a sister, Audrey Engle; paternal grandparents, Roger and Susan Engle of Knightstown; maternal grandparents, Joel and Sharon Worley of Fortville; great-grandmothers, Dora Worley of Monticello, Ky., Iona Richardson of Louisville, Ky., and Ellen Hickman of Lewisville; and numerous aunts, uncles and cousins.
Graveside services were August 21 at Park Cemetery in Greenfield with Rev. Mike Haley officiating. There was no visitation. Memorial contributions may be made to Bethel Baptist Church Building Fund, 1610 S. State St., Greenfield, IN 46140.
Suzanne Wyatt
Dec. 10, 1959 – Aug. 27, 2007
Suzanne Wyatt, 47, of Knightstown, died August 27 in Greenfield.
She was born Dec. 10, 1959, in Henry County, a daughter of Glenn and Peggy (Hale) Riggs.
Mrs. Wyatt was known as a dedicated employee at Indiana Automotive Fasteners in Greenfield. She was a Knightstown High School graduate and she enjoyed dogs and shopping.
Survivors include her husband, David D. Wyatt of Knightstown; a daughter, Cassie L. Patrick of Greenfield; her mother, Peggy (companion, Mike Garrett) Riggs of Knightstown; a sister, Tammi (husband, Mike) Dalton of Williamsburg; a brother, Mick (wife, Peggy) Riggs of Madison; maternal grandmother, Delores Hale of Middletown; her dog, Marli; and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by a sister, Glenna Skinner; and her father, Glenn Riggs.
Funeral services are at 10 a.m. Friday, August 31, at Condo & Son Funeral Home in Wilkinson with Pastor Danny Currey officiating. Burial will follow in Glen Cove Cemetery in Knightstown. Visitation is 4-8 p.m. Thursday, August 30, at the funeral home.
Robert E. Wilson
Aug. 8, 1919 – Aug. 26, 2007
Robert E. Wilson, 88, of Las Vegas, N.V., died August 26 at his home.
He was born Aug. 8, 1919, in Henry County, a son of the late Elmer E. and Flora Jane Wilson.
Mr. Wilson was a lifelong farmer and breeder of Poland China hogs. He was a lifetime member of the Poland China Association where he served two terms as national director. He was a 50-year member of the Shirley Masonic Lodge and Order of the Eastern Star. A former worshipful master and worth patron of Shirley Order of the Eastern Star, Mr. Wilson was also a member of the Murat Shrine. He was educated at Knightstown schools for 11 years, but graduated from Wilkinson High School in 1937. While at Knightstown, he was a member of the livestock judging team which won the national contest in 1935 at Chicago, Ill. Two of his teammates were Clifford Hardin, former United States Secretary of Agriculture, and Lowell Hardin, former head of Purdue University’s School of Agriculture Economics.
Survivors include his wife, Rebecca Wilson; a son, Gary (wife, Kathie) Wilson; a daughter, Jeanne (husband, Wendell) Huntzinger; a stepdaughter, Pat (husband, Jack) Kane; seven grandchildren, Molly (husband, Lane) Judd, Jessica Bressner, Tonya Kane, Stephen (wife, Carrie) Kane, Travis Wilson, Justin Wilson and Shannon Wilson; a sister-in-law, Phyllis Wilson; a brother-in-law, Bud Baer; and several nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife, Florence Evelyn Wilson; a sister, Norma Wilson; a brother, Elmer Wilson, Jr.; a granddaughter, Megan Wilson; and a stepson, Billy Richey.
Funeral services are at 10 a.m. Saturday, September 1, at Condo & Son Funeral Home in Wilkinson with Pastor Jeff Mair officiating. Burial will follow in Glen Cove Cemetery in Knightstown. Visitation is 4-8 p.m. Friday, August 31, at the funeral home. Marie Wyatt Smith
Oct. 4, 1912 – Aug. 22, 2007
Marie Wyatt Smith, 94, died August 22 at her home.
She was born Oct. 4, 1912, in Rowan County, Ky., a daughter of the late Lilburn and Della (Reed) Wyatt.
A 1933 Spiceland Academy graduate, Mrs. Smith and her husband, Finley, served as missionaries to Cambodian refugees in Florida one winter. They taught the refugees about farming and gardening. Mrs. Smith was a member of the Quaker Missionary Society. She was a 12-year member of Carthage High School Band Boosters. Mrs. Smith enjoyed growing flowers and vegetables.
Survivors include four sons, Finley Clark Smith, Jr., of Carthage, Jack A. (wife, Shirley) Smith of Madisonville, Tenn., Glen D. (wife, Jessica) Smith of Carthage and Jon D. (wife, Virginia) Smith of Weatherford, TX; two daughters, Shirley A. Lukens of Indianapolis and Kathy R. (husband, Terry) Gibson of Carthage; a brother, Forrest Wyatt of Knightstown; a sister, Atha Lee Fredrickson of Corvallis, Oreg.; 14 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held August 25 at Walnut Ridge Friends Meeting with Rev. Mike Henderson officiating. Burial followed at Walnut Ridge Friends Meeting. Visitation was August 24 at Todd Funeral Home in Knightstown.

Anita Ione Goodwin
July 29, 1923 – Aug. 21, 2007
Anita Ione Goodwin, 84, of Knightstown, died August 21 at Hancock Regional Hospital in Greenfield.
She was born July 29, 1923 in Wayne County, a daughter of the late Pearl and Georgia (Gilbert) Thalls.
Mrs. Goodwin was a former Cambridge City resident, where she raised her children. She also lived in New Castle and Carthage. Mrs. Goodwin was a former Girl Scout and Boy Scout leader. She enjoyed decorating, gardening, camping, swimming and working with crafts. She was a member of the Raleigh Community Club, where she danced.
Survivors include her husband, Clarence “Dude” Goodwin of Knightstown; three children, Rayanna (husband, Edward) Hopping of Knightstown, Ray “Sonny” (wife, Ann) Mohler, Jr., of Monroe, La., and Connie Lange of Herndon, Va.; a brother, Richard (wife, Pat) Thalls of Richmond; six grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and five great-great-grandchildren.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her first husband, Raymond Mohler, Sr.; four brothers; three sisters; and a granddaughter, Robyn Mohler.
Graveside services were August 24 at Riverside Cemetery in Cambridge City with Pastor Randy Gross officiating. Memorial contributions may be made to diabetes foundation with envelopes available at the funeral home.
Gerald W. Modlin

Gerald W. “Buddy” Modlin, 79, died August 30 at Henry Memorial Hospital
He was born May 16, 1928 in New Castle, a son of the late Wayman and Nora Lee Modlin.
He was a retired employee of the Chrysler Corporation in New Castle, retiring in 1990 after many years of service. Mr. Modlin was a member of the Wiley United Methodist Church in New Castle. He enjoyed making pottery and painting. He also enjoyed music.
Survivors include his wife, Reverend Mary Jane Modlin; three daughters, Heather Modlin of Greenfield, Ramona (husband, Sekronra) Vokes of Smyrna, Ga., and Pamela Modlin of Boston, Mass.; one granddaughter, Lillie Drake of Greenfield; a brother, Charles Stanley Modlin of New Castle; seven nieces, Charlestine Wells of Muncie, Jennifer Cotman of Indianapolis, Mitzie Bassett of Kokomo, Retta Warren of Jacksonville, Fla., Deborah Edmunds of Houston, Texas and Pamela Modlin; three nephews, Dr. Charles (wife, Cheryl) Modlin of Cleveland, Ohio, Freddie Bassett of New Castle and Jeff Bassett of Richmond; and a special neighbor, Marilyn Bassett.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Twila Bassett; and an infant sister.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, September 5, at the Main & Davis Funeral Home, Broad St. Chapel, in New Castle with Pastor Daryl Gilbert, Reverend Lynn Furrow and Reverend Jim Beckers officiating. Burial will follow in the South Mound Cemetery, West Lawn Addition. Visitation was September 4 at the funeral home.
