Linda Sue Gillam
March 15, 1949 – July 1, 2007
Linda Sue Gillam, 58, of Anderson, died July 1 at St. John’s Hospital in Anderson.
She was born March 15, 1949, in Oil City, Ky., a daughter of the late Lewis and Marie (Thompson) Sweet.
Mrs. Gillam married Victor Gillam on June 17, 1967. A homemaker, she was a 1966 Carthage High School graduate.
Survivors include her husband, Victor of Anderson; three brothers, William “Rex” Sweet of Patricksburg, Bobby Sweet of Rushville and Danny Chew of Knightstown; a sister, Bonnie Brown of Middletown, Ohio; and several nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a brother and a sister.
Funeral services are Friday, July 6, at 10 a.m. at Todd Funeral Home in Knightstown with Brother Pete White officiating. Burial will follow in Glen Cove Cemetery. Visitation is Thursday, July 5, from 4-8 p.m. at the funeral home.
Ivan S. Surber
Oct. 30, 1922 – June 30, 2007
Ivan S. Surber, 84, of Straughn, died June 30 at Glen Oaks Health Campus in New Castle.
He was born Oct. 30, 1922, in New Castle, a son of the late Emmett H. and E. Marie (Land) Surber.
Mr. Surber was a 1941 Knightstown High School graduate who served in the U.S. Air Corps. during World War II. He served from Dec. 22, 1942 to Sept. 25, 1945. A decorated veteran, he received numerous honors include EAME Service Medal with four bronze stars; Distinguished Flying Cross Air Medal with three oak leaf clusters; and the Good Conduct Medal. Mr. Surber participated in 31 missions over Rhineland, western Europe and northern France.
Mr. Surber made his home in Straughn for the past 62 years. He retired from Delco Remy in Anderson, where he served as a machine repairman, after 40 years. Additionally, he spent 40 years farming and raising sheep and hogs. Mr. Surber enjoyed traveling, hunting, fishing, working with wood and stained glass and spending time with his family. He was a member of Lewisville Masonic Lodge, Shriners, Straughn Community Club, Straughn Brotherhood and Sisterhood and the planning board of the Henry County Commissioners. He attended Dublin Gospel Mission Church.
Survivors include his wife of 63 years, Barbara (Haskett) Surber; two daughters, LaDonna (Don) Willmann and Cynthia Kurz, both of Straughn; five grandchildren, Lisa (husband, Andrew) Mayer of New Jersey, Brent (wife, Lisa) Davenport of Remington, Denise (husband, Bertie) Smith of Cambridge City, Kevin (wife, Stephanie) Davenport of Millville and Jeremy Kurz of Straughn; 11 great-grandchildren; a sister, Luana (husband, Jim) Williams of Carthage; three nieces and two nephews.
Funeral services are at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, July 4, at Marshall & Erlewein Funeral Home in Dublin with Rev. Paul Isch of the Dublin Gospel Mission Church officiating. Burial with full military honors will follow at Glen Cove Cemetery in Knightstown. Visitation and Masonic services were July 3 at the funeral home. Claudette Reed
Dec. 15, 1942 – June 27, 2007
Claudette Reed, 64, of Knightstown, died June 27 at Hancock Regional Hospital in Greenfield.
She was born Dec. 15, 1942, in Shelbyville, a daughter of the late Claude and Mae (Gourley) Swengle.
She grew up in Franklin and graduated from High School there in 1961. Mrs. Reed was a nurse at The Indiana Masonic Home in Franklin and Regency Place Nursing Home in Greenfield. She married Robert Reed on Sept. 24, 1961. She was co-owner of the Antique and Collectible News Service with her husband. An accomplished photographer of antique subjects, she was also co-author of the best-selling book, Vintage Postcards of the Holidays, which is now in its second edition.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by two daughters, Mary Elizabeth Reed and Judith Diane Reed Wright.
Funeral services were June 30 at Todd Funeral Home in Knightstown. Burial will take place at Glen Cove Cemetery in Knightstown at the family’s convenience. Visitation was June 29 at the funeral home.
Wanda M. Chittenden
Aug. 8, 1924 – June 21, 2007
Wanda M. Chittenden,82, of Greenfield, died June 21 at Hancock Regional Hospital in Greenfield.
She was born Aug. 8, 1924, a daughter of the late Lester and Marie (Foust) Nibarger.
Mrs. Chittenden graduated from Charlottesville High School and was a member of Greenfield American Legion Post 119 Auxiliary. She enjoyed spending time with her family.
Survivors include a son, Danny Roy Chittenden of El Dorado, Cal.; a daughter, Darlene (husband, Rodney) Lingenfelter of Knightstown; two grandchildren, Neal Hull of Greenwood and Patrick Hull of Seattle; and a great-granddaughter, Lillyan Paige Bailey of Markleville.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, James Roy Chittenden; a son, Dennis Lee Chittenden; and a brother, Meredith Theron Nibarger.
Funeral services were June 25 at Stillinger Family Funeral Home in Greenfield. Burial followed at Park Cemetery in Greenfield. Visitation was June 24 at the funeral home.
Myrle Elizabeth Williams
Jan. 11, 1913 – July 8, 2007
Myrle Elizabeth (Risk) Williams, 94, of New Castle, died July 8 at Glen Oaks Health Campus in New Castle.
She was born Jan. 11, 1913, in Spiceland, a daughter of the late George D. and Maude A. (Lemay) Risk.
Mrs. Williams was a Knightstown High School and Indiana Business College graduate. She was known as a devoted wife, homemaker, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and great-great-grandmother. She enjoyed spending time with her family, serving her church and traveling. A lifetime member of First Christian Church in New Castle, she was the first woman elder emeritus of the church and served as chairman of the church board. She was also on the Christian Women’s Fellowship board and was a member and teacher in the Keystone Lookout Sunday School Class. She also served on the planning commission to hire new ministers and helped with vacation bible school. Mrs. Williams was a charter member of the Amici Tia Club, Rebecca Lodge, Golden Kiwanis, Woman’s Club and she volunteered at Meals on Wheels. She attended various other clubs where she shared her slides and experiences from her travels in the holy lands.
Survivors include a daughter, Marian L. (husband, Roger) Wells of Belleview, Fla.; two sons, David W. Williams of Tavares, Fla., and George G. Williams of New Castle; eight grandchildren, Duane (wife, Sue) Benbow, Kenny (wife, Judy) Benbow, Dawn (husband, Jeff) Owens, all of New Castle, Gary (wife, Lana) Anderson of Fort Wayne, Sue Russell of Greenfield, Alice (husband, John) Ray of Springport, Jeff (wife, Debbie) Williams of Vancouver, B.C., and Kelly (wife, April) Williams of Indianapolis; 17 great-grandchildren; six great-great-grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Jessie W. Williams; a daughter, Darlene E. Alderson; two sons-in-law, Charles Alderson, Jr., and Keith E. Anderson; a sister, Mabel L. Pickens; a brother, Marion G. Risk; and her stepfather, Asa G. James.
Funeral services are at 11 a.m. Thursday, July 12, at Macer-Hall Funeral Home in New Castle with Rev. Linda McKiernan-Allen and Dr. Cloyd Dye officiating. Burial will follow in Glen Cove Cemetery in Knightstown. Visitation is 4-8 p.m. Wednesday, July 11, at the funeral home.
Bruce Clark
Oct. 28, 1950 – July 4, 2007
Bruce Clark, 56, of New Castle, died July 4 at St. Vincent’s Hospital in Indianapolis.
He was born Oct. 28, 1950, in New Castle, a son of the late Ted and Bettie (Buckner) Clark.
Mr. Clark served in the Indiana National Guard for for 24 years before retiring. He worked at Chrysler Corporation in New Castle for 34 years before retiring in 2004. He also worked two years at Metaldyne. Mr. Clark was a member of Wiley United Methodist Church in New Castle. He was a member and former representative of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) and was a civil rights representative for Chrysler Corporation. He enjoyed art and music, and he collected Motown and other records as well as model GTO cars.
Survivors include his wife, Theresa (Morgan) Clark; three sons, Brandon and Ronald at home, and Shawn Humes; three sisters, Jeanine Elizabeth (husband, Robert) Isom of Vallejo, Cal., and Kathy (husband, David) Jackson of Muncie and June (husband, Derrick) McClinton of Houston, Texas; a brother, Theodore Clark of Muncie; an aunt, Barbara (husband, Ed) Walker of New Castle; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his grandparents and three uncles.
Funeral services were June 7 at Wiley United Methodist Church in New Castle. Burial followed in South Mound Cemetery, Legion Hill, in New Castle. Full military graveside rites were conducted by New Castle American Legion Post 137. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society. Main & Davis Funeral Home in New Castle handled arrangements.
Richard L. Wisehart
Sept. 12, 1926 – July 15, 2007
Richard L. Wisehart, 80, of Knightstown, died July 15 at Ball Memorial Hospital in Muncie.
He was born Sept. 12, 1926, in Shirley, a son of the late Alonzo and Millie (McCray) Wisehart.
Mr. Wisehart was a mechanic who retired from Wilkinson Implement in Knightstown after 30 years of service. He also worked at Firestone, National Coach and Chrysler in New Castle. In addition, he operated a wrecker service for Tubby Woods. Mr. Wisehart attended Shirley Friends Church and was a member of the Pioneers Club of America. His hobbies included antique tractors and collecting pocket watches and knives.
Survivors include two sons, Richard Wayne (wife, Gail) Wisehart of Shirley and Michael Lee (wife, Diana) Wisehart of Knightstown; seven grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; two stepgreat-grandchildren; nieces and nephews; a brother, Gerald Wisehart of Oakville; and two sisters, Linda Cole and Betty Miller, both of Shirley.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Ila (Stalcup) Wisehart; and three brothers, Eugene, Byron and Robert Wisehart.
Funeral services are at 10 a.m. Thursday, July 19, at Condo & Son Funeral Home in Wilkinson with Pastor Jim Jackson officiating. Burial will follow in McCray Cemetery in Wilkinson. Visitation is 4-8 p.m. Wednesday, July 18, at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to the Pioneers Club with envelopes available at the funeral home.
