Mary Anna Hagner, 85, of Knightstown, died April 4 at her home.
She was born Oct. 25, 1921, in Henry County, a daughter of the late Carl and Jeanette (Stiegleman) Wissler.
An active member of Knightstown United Methodist Church, she was a former member of the church choir. She was also involved in KUMC’s Martha Circle, in which she served as vice president for many years. Mrs. Hagner enjoyed playing piano and was a member of Psi Iota Xi, Daughters of the American Revolution and the Order of the Eastern Star. She and her late husband, Herschel, co-owned and operated The Garment Cleaners in Knightstown from 1948 until their retirements in 1981. An active and creative person, Mrs. Hagner enjoyed collecting miniatures, writing poetry, sewing and other handy crafts, including her unique sunshine baskets. Known for her remarkable memory and her knack for family history, she was very devoted to her family and extended family.
Survivors include three daughters, Beth Ann Shirokawa of Corona, Cal., Faye Ellen (husband, Charles) Hagner-Loof of Orange, Cal., and Mary Alice (husband, Larry) Wilson of New Castle; three grandchildren, Brad (wife, Beth) Wilson of Yorktown, Paul Shirokawa of Corona, Cal., and John Shirokawa of Ladera Ranch, Cal.; two great-grandchildren, Cameron and Caitlin Wilson, both of Yorktown; a sister, Carolyn Kroger of San Diego, Cal.; a brother, Jack (wife, Sharon) Wissler of New Lisbon; and several nieces, nephews and great-nieces and great-nephews.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 64 years, Herschel, whom she married in April 1939.
Funeral services were April 11 at Hinsey-Brown Funeral Service, Knightstown Chapel, with Rev. Steve Brackney officiating. Burial followed at Glen Cove Cemetery in Knightstown. Visitation was April 10 at the funeral home. Psi Iota Xi services were also April 10. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society or American Heart Association with envelopes available at the funeral home.
Nancy Jane Gillam
May 16, 1922 – April 4, 2007
Nancy Jane Gillam, 84, of Chesterfield, died April 4 at Miller’s Merry Manor in Chesterfield.
She was born May 16, 1922, in Morgan, Ky., a daughter of the late William and Elizabeth (Bundy) Haney.
Mrs. Gillam was a member of Bethany Baptist Church in Anderson. She married Dewey Gillam on Oct. 16, 1943. She was a homemaker.
Survivors include her husband, Dewey, of Anderson; four sons, Victor (wife, Linda) Gillam of Anderson, Ray (wife, Patty) Gillam of Knightstown, Ralph (wife, Sheryl) Gillam of Kempton and Bill (wife, Carol) Gillam of Alexandria; a brother, Walker (wife, Ann) Haney of New Castle; two sisters, Sara Egan of New Castle and Grace Carter of Chesterfield; 17 grandchildren; and 19 great-grandchildren.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a son, Tim Gillam; and two daughters, Irene Downs and Mona Couch.
Funeral services were April 10 at Todd Funeral Home in Knightstown with Brother Pete White officiating. Burial followed in Glen Cove Cemetery in Knightstown. Visitation was April 9 at the funeral home.
Harry O. Roland
Feb. 27, 1933 – Apr. 16, 2007
Harry O. Roland, 74, of Knightstown, died April 16 at Henry County Memorial Hospital.
He was born Feb. 27, 1933, in Knightstown, a son of the late Roy and Emma (McKee) Roland.
A lifelong Knightstown resident, Mr. Roland married the former Winifred Wales on Dec. 31, 1953. Mr. Roland served with the U.S. Army during the Korean War. An avid supporter of Knightstown athletic programs, he retired from Delco Remy, where he served as a utility operator for 35 years. He was a member of First Christian Church of Knightstown and served as a deacon there. Mr. Roland was also a charter member of Royal Hylands Golf Club, Knightstown American Legion Post 152 and 50-year member of UAW #662. He had worked at Todd Funeral Home in Knightstown for the last 14 years.
Survivors include his wife, Winnie Roland of Knightstown; two sons, Michael (wife, Dianne) Roland of Knightstown and Kevin (wife, Tammi) Roland of Greenfield; a daughter, Kimberly (husband, Trent) Pitcher of Renssalaer; two brothers, Mitchell (wife, Sheryl) Roland of Knightstown and Laddy Roland of Poland, Ind.; three sisters, Barbara (husband, Jim) Walls and Judy (husband, George) Atkins, both of Knightstown, and Sue (husband, Versil) Dudley of Florida; eight grandchildren, Ryan Roland of Bloomington, Shane and Mariah Roland, both of Knightstown, Brandi Roland of Greenfield, Nikki (husband, Chris) Keith of Knightstown, Chad (wife, Marissa) Roland of Greenfield, Devin Pitcher of China and Megan Pitcher of Rensselaer; and two great-grandsons, Conner and Ayden Keith of Knightstown.
Funeral services are Friday, April 20, at 11 a.m. at Todd Funeral Home in Knightstown with Rev. Richard Thayer officiating. Burial will follow at Glen Cove Cemetery in Knightstown. Knightstown American Legion Post 152 will conduct military graveside rites. Visitation is Thursday, April 19, from 2-8 p.m. at the funeral home. In the lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be sent to First Christian Church of Knightstown.
Lesa A. Butler

Lesa A. Butler, 60, of Knightstown, died April 11 at her home.
She was born Oct. 20, 1946, in New Castle, a daughter of the late James Glenn and Marie (Melton) White.
A Knightstown resident for over 40 years, Mrs. Butler owned and operated Lesa’s Beauty Salon in her home. She previously worked at J.C. Penney Hair Salon. She also enjoyed working at Busy B’s Flower and Gift Shop in Knightstown.
Survivors include her husband of 43 years, Ray Butler of Knightstown; a son, Jamie (wife, Sherry) Butler of Knightstown; four sisters, Irene Lee of New Castle, Josephine (husband, Gene) Rains of Muncie, Olene Linsley of Greenfield and Judy (husband, John) Bauer of New Castle; two granddaughters, Kristin Creason and Ashley Butler, both of Knightstown; three great-grandchildren, Jason, Kaitlynn and Bradley Creason, all of Knightstown; and several nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a brother, Jim “Whitey” White.
Funeral services were April 14 at Hinsey-Brown Funeral Service, New Castle, with Rev. Charles Dugger officiating. Visitation was April 14. Memorial contributions may be made to the Henry County Heart Association with envelopes available at the funeral home.
Mabel Burke
Jan. 24, 1936 – Apr. 14, 2007
Mabel Burke, 71, of New Castle, died April 14 at Ball Memorial Hospital in Muncie.
She was born Jan. 24, 1936, in Manchester, Ky., the daughter of the late William and Sudie (Jackson) Grubb.
Mrs. Burke retired from Smurfit Container Company in New Castle in 1989 after 16 years of service. As a child, she attended the Baptist Church of Manchester. She was an accomplished quilter and she also enjoyed gardening, growing roses, canning and cooking for her family. Mrs. Burke also enjoyed spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren. She married Jack Burke on July 13, 1957. The couple would have celebrated their 50th anniversary later this year.
Survivors include her husband, Jack Burke of New Castle; a daughter, Lisa D. Burke of New Castle; three sons, James Burke, Rick L. (wife, Jonie) Burke and Tonney Burke, all of New Castle; six grandchildren, Justin Burke of Indianapolis, Eric Burke of Selma, Wesley Burke and J. T. Griggs, both of Mooreland, and Caleb and Miranda Burke, both of New Castle; four sisters, Bessie (husband, Charles) Janes of New Castle, Hazel (husband, Earl) Catron of Spiceland, Gracie Brooks of New Castle and Mae Hibbard of Manchester, Ky.; a brother, Earl (wife, Viola) Grubb of Manchester, Ky.; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a sister, Esther Bowling; four brothers, Homer, Virgil, Dewey and Amos Grubb; and special friends, Annie Foster, Alma Lenz, Rita Polston and Jeff Burchett.
Funeral services were April 18 at Main & Davis Funeral Home, Astor Main Blue River Chapel, with Pastor Chuck Bell officiating. Burial followed in Mooreland Cemetery. Visitation was April 17 at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to the Ball Memorial Cancer Research Fund or the Crones Research Fund with envelopes available at the funeral home.
Hazel Mae Frazier
Feb. 8, 1918 – April 21, 2007
Hazel Mae (Adams) Frazier, 89, of Richardson, Texas, formerly of New Castle, died April 21 at the Gardens of Richardson.
She was born Feb. 8, 1918, in New Castle, a daughter of the late Hazel Marie Davie and Clarence Adams.
Mrs. Frazier worked at Perfect Circle during the war and was a longtime member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Ladies Auxiliary. She enjoyed painting, sewing and crocheting.
Survivors include a daughter, Silvia Sue Thornton of Dallas, Texas; two grandsons, Boyce and David Thornton; a great-grandson, Brett Thornton; two brothers, Guy Adams of Indiana and Carl Adams; and several nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Ralph Wilson Frazier; a sister, Midge Ingle; and a brother, Bob Adams.
Funeral services are Friday, April 27, at 1 p.m. at Condo & Son Funeral Home in Wilkinson. Burial will follow at Glen Cove Cemetery in Knightstown. Visitation is 11:30 a.m. until time of services on Friday, April 27.
Josephine R. Leden
April 29, 1922 – April 22, 2007
Josephine R. (Waits) Leden, 84, of Rushville, died April 22 at Rush Memorial Hospital in Rushville.
She was born April 29, 1922, in Jackson County, a daughter of the late Chase and Edith (Gibson) Ruddell.
Mrs. Leden was a 1940 Rushville High School graduate. In 1969, she graduated from Ball State Teachers College. On April 9, 1971, she married Woodrow G. Dean and he preceded her in death in May 1998. Mrs. Leden served as an elementary school teacher in the Rushville school system and also in Florida. She was a member of St. Paul United Methodist Church as well as the Friendly Homemakers Club.
Survivors include a son, Richard (wife, Kathryn) Waits of Knightstown; two daughters, Lois (husband, Wayne) Nichols of Connersville and Barbara Waits of Greensburg; three grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and four stepgreat-grandchildren.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a daughter, Alice Ann Waits.
Funeral services are at 1 p.m. on Wednesday, April 25, at Moster & Cox Mortuary in Rushville with Rev. Allen Phillips officiating. Cremation and burial will take place Thursday, April 26, at East Hill Cemetery in Rushville. Visitation is noon until time of service on Wednesday, April 25 at the funeral home.
