Charles W. “Bill” Barker
May 25, 1927 – March 13, 2007
Charles W. “Bill” Barker, 79, of Rushville, died March 13 at Flatrock River Lodge.
He was born May 25, 1927, in Rushville, a son of the late William E. and Ada (Ogden) Barker.
Mr. Barker was a 1945 Mays High School graduate. He served as senior class president and captain of the basketball team. Mr. Barker was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II. He married Norma Jean Wooldridge on Dec. 23, 1945, and she preceded him in death on Dec. 24, 1980. He married Marie Ailes in 1982 and she preceded him in death in 1998.
Mr. Barker owned and operated Barker’s Service Station at 7th and Main streets in Rushville from 1969 to the early 1980s. He also served as superintendent of the Rush County Home for 15 years and retired in 1998. A longtime Rush County farmer, Mr. Barker was a member of First Baptist Church.
Survivors include a son, Gregory Barker of Greensburg; four daughters, Melissa (husband, Keane) Hendershott of Kansas, Barbara Gail (husband, John) Jones of Scipio, Julie (husband, Mark) Hendershott of Carthage and Maria Suzanne (husband, Chris) Goodin of Indianapolis; one sister, Becky Moffitt of Rushville; six grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
In addition to his parents and two wives, he was preceded in death by a brother.
Funeral services were March 17 at Todd Funeral Home in Rushville with Rev. Charles Justice officiating. Burial followed in Rushville’s East Hill Cemetery. Visitation was March 16 at the funeral home. Marcella V. Widvey
Aug. 1, 1921 – March 25, 2007
Marcella V. Widvey, 85, of Fishers, a former Knightstown resident, died March 25 at Community Hospital North in Indianapolis.
She was born Aug. 1, 1921, in Knightstown, a daughter of the late John L. and Alice Ann (Deck) Widvey.
Mrs. Widvey lived her early life in Knightstown, New Castle and Indianapolis. She was a registered nurse who served as nurse for 29 years at Chrysler in New Castle. She retired in 1980. Prior to that, she worked at Wishard Hospital in Indianapolis. She was a 1939 Knightstown High School graduate and a 1949 graduate of the Indianapolis General Hospital School of Nursing. She earned a bachelor’s degree from Indiana University and was a member of East 91st Street Christian Church in Indianapolis.
Survivors include a brother, Merle Philip Widvey of Grant City.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a brother, Richard L. Widvey.
Funeral services are at 1 p.m. Friday, March 30, at Glen Cove Cemetery in Knightstown with Minister John Samples officiating. Arrangements are being handled by Todd Funeral Home in Knightstown.
Katheryne R. Jackson
Oct. 21, 1913 – March 22, 2007
Katheryne R. “Kay” (Roberts) Jackson, 93, of Greenfield, died March 22 at Ellison House in Greenfield.
She was born Oct. 21, 1913, in Hancock County, a daughter of the late Elijah and Lora (Coffin) Martin.
Mrs. Jackson was a 1931 graduate of Westland High School. She married Floyd Jackson in the late 1930s. She worked for Ellis Trucking in Indianapolis and was a secretary to the board of education in Flint, Mich., before retiring in 1978. Mrs. Jackson was a member of Walnut Ridge Friends Church in Carthage. She lived most of her life in Michigan until returning to Indiana in 1978 when she moved back onto her family’s farm, Indiana Homestead, formerly owned by her parents.
Survivors include a brother, Joseph Roberts of Lebanon; three sisters, Ann Shively of Greenfield, Edith Lacey of Greenfield and Betty Oldham of Indianapolis; and several nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband; and two brothers, Hugh and Wallace Roberts.
Funeral services were March 24 at Erlewein Mortuary in Greenfield with Pastor Bruce Bannister officiating. Burial followed at Walnut Ridge Friends Church Cemetery in Carthage. Martha Mae Perry
Jan. 24, 1923 – March 20, 2007
Martha Mae Perry, 84, of New Castle, died March 20 at Americare Living Center in New Castle.
She was born Jan. 24, 1923, in Middletown, a daughter of the late William Thomas and Ann (Basicker) Fatzinger.
Mrs. Perry was a lifelong New Castle resident and a 1941 graduate of New Castle High School. She married Philip Perry on April 5, 1942. She worked at J.C. Penney for 28 years and attended Nettle Creek Church of the Brethren in Hagerstown for several years. Recently, she was attending Memorial Wesleyan Church. Mrs. Perry enjoyed bowling and fishing.
Survivors include her husband, Philip of New Castle; two daughters, Patricia Ann (husband, Larry) Bundy of Knightstown and Linda Susan (husband, Danny) Davis; seven grandchildren, Terrilynn and Brian Perry, Marc (wife, Charmi) Bundy, David (wife, Susie) Bundy, Christopher (wife, Melinda) Bundy, Jennifer (husband, Randy) Davis and Jason (wife, Kim) Davis; nine great-grandchildren, Nathan, Philip and Corbin Bundy, Erin and Adam Bundy, James and Anna Davis and Landon, Adrienne and Meredith Bundy; a daughter-in-law, Ruby Perry of New Castle; a step-granddaughter, Misty (husband, Joel) Schielie of Greenfield; and two stepgreat-grandchildren, Michael and Madison Schielie.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by an infant sister; and a son, John Bernard Perry in September 1984.
Funeral services were March 23 at Hinsey-Brown Funeral Service in New Castle with Pastor Marc Bundy officiating. Burial followed in Green Hills Memory Gardens. Visitation was March 22 at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to the Alzheimer’s Research Foundation with envelopes available the funeral home.
Virginia Louise Swindell
May 4, 1919 – March 29, 2007
Virginia Louise Swindell, 87, of Shirley, died March 29 at Hancock Regional Hospital in Greenfield. She was born May 4, 1919, in rural Hancock County, a daughter of the late John and Anna May (Sipe) Williams.
Mrs. Swindell was a 1936 Arsenal Technical High School graduate. Known as a vivacious and fun loving person, she enjoyed many friends in the Red Hat Society. She was a member of Wilkinson Church of Christ. Mrs. Swindell enjoyed traveling with friends and visiting family. An avid gardener, she also enjoyed sewing and a variety of arts and crafts.
Survivors include Bob (wife, Mary) Swindell of Homer, La., Jim (wife, Linda) Swindell of Luther, Okla., John (wife, Jean) Swindell of Murphy, N.C., Jane (husband, Jerry) Brothers of Spring, Tx., Joe (wife, Jennifer) Swindell of Wilkinson, Mary (husband, Bill) Frazier of Buhler, Kan.; a daughter-in-law, Shirley (husband, Max) Retherford of Windfall; a brother, Virgil S. Williams of Cleveland; 11 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, James H. Swindell; two sisters, Mary LaVaughn Collins and Ruth Ralph; two brothers, Tom Williams and O.D. “Dale” Williams; and a grandson, Ryan Brothers.
Funeral services were April 2 at Condo & Son Funeral Home in Wilkinson. Burial followed in McCray Cemetery in Wilkinson. Visitation was April 1 at the funeral home. Claudetta D. Lawton
May 24, 1938 – March 29, 2007
Claudetta D. (Gray) Lawton, 68, of New Castle, died March 29, at Ball Memorial Hospital in Muncie. She was born May 24, 1938, in Grove, Okla., a daughter of the late Chloe and Vera (Arnold) Gray.
Mrs. Lawton was a housewife and mother who sold Avon products. She enjoyed using her CB radio and was an avid Nascar fan. She also enjoyed crocheting, fishing and bird watching.
Survivors include her husband, Everett Lawton of New Castle; two sons, Forrest (wife, Michelle) Lawton of Pulaski, Va., and Evan (wife, Marian) Lawton of Congerville, Ill.; two daughters, Gretchen K. (husband, Randall) Quilliams of Mountain City, Ga., and Lora Haywood of Lebanon, Tenn.; five grandchildren, Sabrina Severson, Mandi Cantrell, Ashleigh Spurlock, Brooke Lawton and Jacob Lawton; a brother, Tony Gray of Noel, Mo.; a sister, Linda Elliott of Jay, Okla.; and several nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a brother, Ronnie Gray; and a sister, Arvella Winchester.
Funeral services were April 3 at Condo & Son Funeral Home with Rev. Melvin Gideon officiating. Burial followed at McCray Cemetery in Wilkinson. Visitation was April 2 at the funeral home.
Sarah K. Moll
July 24, 1953 – April 8, 2007
Sarah K. “Casey” Moll, 53, of Knightstown, died April 8.
She was born July 24, 1953, in Washington, D.C., a daughter of the late Jean Bartlett and Geneva Aline (Gentry) Hayden.
It has been stated, “Five minutes with Casey Moll and you will be a changed person forever.” A member of Faith Lutheran Church in Greenfield, Mrs. Moll and her husband owned and operated Yogi Bear Jellystone Park in Knightstown since 1994. She was a hearthside cook at Huddleston House, a historical landmark in Cambridge City and a member of the 33rd Virginia Civil War Reenactment Company. She was a special aide for the Charles A. Beard Memorial School Corporation for four years and a major fundraiser for the Muscular Dystrophy Association for 10 years.
Survivors include her husband, Daniel of Knightstown; a daughter, Holly (husband, Kerry) Buchanan of Knightstown; a son, John Davis of Connersville; a brother, Michael Hayden of Muncie; a sister, Theresa Faye Hargus of Heartland, Mich.; two grandchildren; Kaleb Lee and Haley Jean of Knightstown; three stepchildren, Jason (wife, Jody) Moll of Dayton, Ohio, Jennifer (husband, Garry) Kimble of Ingalls and Steve Moll of Knightstown; six stepgrandchildren, Taylor, Shelby, Sarah and Travis Moll, and Cassidy and Annalee Kimble.
Funeral services are at 3 p.m. Saturday, April 14, at Faith Lutheran Church in Greenfield with Pastor Ronal Baumann officiating. Burial will follow in Glen Cove Cemetery in Knightstown. Visitation is 3-8 p.m. on Friday, April 13, at Hinsey-Brown Funeral Service, Knightstown Chapel, and one hour prior to services at the church. Memorial contributions may be made to the Susan G.
