Indiana Marriages, 1780-1992

Lt. Col. Richard E. Morgan

April 17, 1922 – March 7, 2007

Lt. Col. Richard E. Morgan, 84, of Knightstown died March 7 at Hancock Regional Hospital in Greenfield.

He was born April 17, 1922, in Rush County, a son of the late John M. and Mary Elizabeth (Roberts) Morgan.

A United States Air Force veteran, Mr. Morgan retired in 1982 as a lieutenant colonel. While serving in the Air Force, he flew AC-119 gun ships in Vietnam and was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross, the Air Medal with three oak leaf clusters and the Combat Readiness Medal. Mr. Morgan also retired from the Charles A. Beard Memorial School Corporation where he served as maintenance and transportation supervisor. He was a member of Center Christian Church, Knightstown American Legion Post 152 and VFW. He enjoyed restoring antique tractors, which he entered in tractor shows. Mr. Morgan also enjoyed attending reunions with fellow military retirees.

Survivors include his wife, Frances (Ellis) Morgan of Knightstown, whom he married on June 30, 1944; three daughters, Marcia (husband, Dr. Ronald) Denton of LaGrange, Lisa M. Morgan of Knoxville, Tenn., and Lori (husband, Greg) Morrison of Indianapolis; eight grandchildren, Lindy (husband, Lance) Cummings and their children, Lauren, Libby and Leigh Denton, all of Fort Wayne, Larissa and Lesly Denton of LaGrange and Jacob and Jared Morrison of Indianapolis; a brother, Robert (wife, Shirley) Morgan of Lewisville; two sisters, Janet (husband, Harry) Holloway of Richmond and Mary Kay (husband, Dana) DeHaven of Lynn; and many nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, John Wallace Morgan and Hugh E. Morgan.

Funeral services were March 12 at Center Christian Church in Mays with Minister Bill Worrell officiating. Burial followed at Center Cemetery. Military graveside rites were performed by the Wright Patterson Air Force Base Honor Guard. Visitation was March 11 at Center Christian Church. Memorial contributions may be made to the Center Christian Church Building Fund or the charity of the donor’s choice.

Barbara J. Snodgress

June 24, 1928 – March 5, 2007

Barbara J. Snodgress, 78, of Knightstown, died March 5 at Hancock Regional Hospital in Greenfield.

She was born June 24, 1928, in Indianapolis, a daughter of the late Joseph and Esther (Drake) Farb.

Mrs. Snodgress was a 1946 Washington High School (Indianapolis) graduate. A homemaker, she was a longtime Greensboro Friends Meeting member. She was also a member of the church’s ladies organization where she taught Bible school for many years. Mrs. Snodgress was also a member of the Greensboro Community Club.

Survivors include a son, Robert Snodgress of rural Greensboro; two daughters, Terri (husband, Mark) Snodgress-Simmermon of rural Greensboro and Lou Ann (husband, Steve) Snodgress-Rothstein of Pendleton; four grandchildren, Ashley and Mac Rothstein of Pendleton and Cayla and Mylee Simmermon of rural Greensboro; a brother, Joe Farb of Mena, Ark.; and several nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Max C. Snodgress.

Funeral services were March 10 at Greensboro Friends Meeting with Pastor Joe Reece officiating. Burial followed in Glen Cove Cemetery in Knightstown. Visitation was one hour prior to services at the church. Hinsey-Brown Funeral Service handled arrangements.

Marilyn Ann Manning

April 12, 1938 – March 19, 2007

Marilyn Ann (Gardner) Manning, 68, of Knightstown, died March 19 at her home.

She was born April 12, 1938, in Arlington, a daughter of Marshall and Isabel Irene (Addison) Gardner.

Mrs. Manning was known as a loving mother and grandmother, affectionately known as “Gran.” She was a member of Smyrna Baptist Church in Spiceland where she was involved in the Women’s Missionary Union. She enjoyed spending time with her family and traveling and camping with her husband, Melvin. A longtime Knightstown resident, Mrs. Manning was previously co-owner and operator of Mel’s Diner. She was employed by the Town of Knightstown as secretary of Glen Cove Cemetery.

Survivors include her mother; her husband, Melvin O. Manning of Knightstown; a sister, Marabel K. (husband, Steve) Lowring; four daughters, Virginia L. Ottinger, Valerie J. Manning, Karen S. (husband, Donald) Wells and Connie M. (husband, Mark) Tompkins; a son, Melvin O. (wife, Judy) Manning, Jr.; grandchildren, Suzanne L. (husband, Rob) Wyatt, Robert Joseph “Joe” (wife, Shawn) Ottinger, William Brien James, Dennis M. James, Brooke (husband, Jason) Woods, Brandi (husband, Kenny) Vicars, Tyler Manning, Colton Manning, Michael W. (wife, Shannon) Tompkins, Matthew L. (wife, Johnda) Tompkins, Abigail M. (fiance, Andrew Ingersoll) Tompkins and Samuel J. Tompkins; step-grandchildren, Shane and Sean Benjamin, Aaron A. (fiance, Summer) Wells and Corey V. (fiance, Samantha) Wells; great-grandchildren, Bobby B. Wyatt III, Coleman L. Wyatt, Candice Alicia Rose Wyatt, Jacob Brock Ottinger, Alexandrea M. James, Ian M. James, William C. James, Zerelda M. James, Cameron Woods, Taylor N. Tompkins, Skylar M. Tompkins, Hannah A. Tompkins, Scarlet R. Tompkins, Sophia G. Tompkins, Autumn L. Tompkins and Lucas R. Tompkins; and stepgreat-grandchildren, Brendan Anderson, Andrew Woods, Lexi Combs and Jaydan A.Wells.

She was preceded in death by her father, Marshall H. Gardner; a sister, Marsha Karen Gardner and a grandson, David A. Tompkins.

Funeral services are at 1 p.m. Thursday, March 22, at Hinsey-Brown Funeral Service in Knightstown with Pastor Larry Delon officiating. Burial will follow in Glen Cove Cemetery in Knightstown. Visitation is 4-8 p.m. Wednesday, March 21, at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to Smyrna Baptist Church Building Fund with envelopes available at the funeral home.

Dorothy L. Smith

March 7, 1915 – March 17, 2007

Dorothy L. (Woodell) Smith, 92, of Greenfield, died March 17 at Brandywine Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Greenfield.

She was born March 7, 1915, in Sanford, N.C., a daughter of the late Kit Carson and Mae Lee (Yarborough) Woodell.

Mrs. Smith worked at Southern Bell Telephone Company as an operator. She was very involved in church and women’s organizations. She was also a lifelong homemaker and a member of Eastern Star in Raleigh, N.C.

Survivors include a son, Dr. Robert W. (wife, Jama) Tennant of Greenfield; a daughter, Carolyn Jean Tennant of Raleigh, N.C.; three granddaughters; one great-granddaughter; three great-grandsons; and several nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her first husband, Corless Wynne Tennant; her second husband, Bud Smith; four brothers; and one sister.

Funeral services were March 21 at Condo & Son Funeral Home with Rev. Marty Ballard officiating. Burial followed at Mechanicsburg Cemetery. Visitation was March 20 at the funeral home.

Douglas Wayne Perkins

Aug. 3, 1923 – March 17, 2007

Douglas Wayne Perkins, 83, of Morristown, formerly of Charlottesville, died March 17 at Morristown Manor.

He was born Aug. 3, 1923, in Eden, a son of the late Vern E. and Essie (Pope) Perkins.

Mr. Perkins retired from Chrysler in New Castle and was a member of the United Auto Workers.

Survivors include four sons, Dale Perkins of Florida, Roy Perkins of Oklahoma City, Okla., and William and Andrew Perkins, both of Wilkinson; eight grandchildren; a brother, Robert Perkins of Mechanicsburg; a sister, Linda Perkins; and several nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Marilyn (McDaniel) Perkins; and a sister, Barbara Dottie Denney.

Funeral services are Thursday, March 22, at 10 a.m. at Condo & Son Funeral Home in Wilkinson with Fred Gridwood officiating. Burial will follow at McCray Cemetery in Wilkinson. Visitation is Wednesday, March 21, from 4-8 p.m. at the funeral home.

Lillie M. Morrow

May 14, 1907 – March 16, 2007

Lillie M. (Hummel) Morrow, 99, of Markleville, died Friday, March 16 at St. John’s Medical Center in Anderson.

She was born May 14, 1907, in Fairview, Tenn., a daughter of the late Ebb and Mattie (Sidwell) Hummel.

Mrs. Morrow was a lifelong housewife who attended Warrington Free Will Baptist Church. She enjoyed quilting and gardening. Mrs. Morrow enjoyed spending time with her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren and her great-great-grandchild.

Survivors include three sons, James (wife, Linda) Morrow of Markleville, Edward (wife, Gloria) Morrow of Anderson and Robert Morrow of Hanover; two daughters-in-law, Sharon (Morrow) Rubenking of Anderson and Karen Morrow of Middletown; 21 grandchildren; 48 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; and several nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, William Clyde Morrow; two sons, Joel Toney Morrow and Charles Morrow; three grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were March 19 at Condo & Son Funeral Home with Rev. Paul Savage officiating. Private burial will take place at McCray Cemetery at a later date. Visitation was March 19 at the funeral home.

Mary Willis Wells

Dec. 24, 1923 – March 14, 2007

Mary Willis Wells, 83, a former Knightstown resident, died March 14 at Regency Place in Greenfield.

She was born Dec. 24, 1923, in Flemingsburg, Ky., a daughter of the late Gobel and Rushia Jackson.

Mrs. Wells enjoyed spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren. She was a member of Knightstown Business and Professional Women and served as a volunteer at Knightstown High School.

Survivors include three sons, Mike (wife, Sonja) Wells of Knightstown, Marty (wife, Debbie) Wells of Carthage and Scott (wife, Andrea) Wells of Carthage; seven grandchildren, Todd (wife, Monica) Wells of Albuquerque, N.M., Ross Wells of Morristown, Tenn., Danielle (husband, Jim) Carmichael of Carthage, Miki (husband, Justin) Cole of Knightstown, Maribeth Wells of Carthage and Shalee and Keegan Wells, both of Carthage; five great-grandchildren, Sara and Emily Wells of Bellbrook, Ohio, Kayleigh and Ryan Wells of Spokane, Wa., and Braxton Carmichael of Carthage; a sister, Genevie Coffman of Knightstown; a brother, Jim (wife, Virginia) Jackson of Knightstown; and several nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Carl Wells; three brothers, Alexander, Malcolm and Shelton Jackson; and a sister, Rube Huse.

Funeral services were March 17 at Hinsey-Brown Funeral Service, Knightstown Chapel, with Pastor Randy Gross officiating. Burial followed at Glen Cove Cemetery in Knightstown. Visitation was March 16 at the funeral home.
