Cathie Gail (Burns) Early, 51, of Shirley, died December 23 at Hancock Regional Hospital in Greenfield.
She was born July 6, 1955, in LaFollette, Tenn., a daughter of the late Burt A. and Mildred D. (Wilson) Burns.
Mrs. Early was a homemaker who spent the last 32 years in Indiana with her husband and children. She enjoyed professional wrestling, bowling, family reunions and spoiling her grandchildren.
Survivors include her husband, Lowell F. “Buddy” Early; four children, Jennifer G. Early, Johnathan A. (wife, Maria) Early, Joshua L. Early and Sarah M. (fiance, Allen Seal) Early; a sister, Margaret A. Wilson; a brother, Jerry W. Burns; three grandchildren, Cheyenne Marie Whisman, Gwendalyn Rose Early and Lillyanne Nora Early; three nephews; and a niece.
Funeral services were December 27 at Condo & Son Funeral Home in Wilkinson with Rev. Jeff Mair officiating.
Fern Tinkle
Sept. 28, 1908 – Dec. 23, 2006
Fern (Best) Tinkle, 98, of New Castle, died December 23 at Henry County Memorial Hospital.
She was born Sept. 28, 1908, in Mackport, a daughter of the late William E. and Minnie (Pindell) Best.
Mrs. Tinkle worked at Modernfold Industries in New Castle. She retired in 1974 after nearly 32 years of service as a supervisor. She was a member of First Baptist Church in New Castle. She enjoyed life and spending time with her family.
Survivors include a a son, Frank J. (Buster) Hayes of New Castle; a stepdaughter, Jeraldine Wright of New Castle; 10 grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; and several nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her first husband, Jerome Hayes; her second husband, Virgil J. Tinkle; six sisters and two brothers.
Funeral services were December 28 at Main & Davis Funeral Home, Broad Street Chapel, in New Castle with Pastor Dan Yeager officiating. Burial followed in South Mound Cemetery in New Castle. Visitation was December 27 at the funeral home.
Glowdean Johnson
Sept. 8, 1928 – Dec. 23, 2006
Glowdean (Bow) Johnson, 78, of Charlottesville, died December 23 at Hancock Regional Hospital in Greenfield.
She was born Sept. 8, 1928, in Bow, Ky., a daughter of the late Buford and Pauline (Shelley) Bow.
Mrs. Johnson was a Lewisville High School graduate and later owned and operated the Lewisville Café. A homemaker, she was also a seamstress who enjoyed making quilts. A member of Hancock Baptist Church in Greenfield, Mrs. Johnson and her husband, Dick, made their home in Charlottesville for the last 34 years.
Survivors include her husband of 56 years, Richard L. “Dick” Johnson, whom she married in Lewisville on Oct. 7, 1950; three sons, Marcus Ray (wife, Jacquelyn) Johnson of Batesville, and James Brian Johnson and Trenton Russell Johnson, both of Charlottesville; six grandchildren, Joseph Alen (wife, Angie) Perkins, Deana Lynn Perkins, Donna Stuller-Lisman, Nyoca Star Phillips, Jeremiah Robert Johnson, Jeremy Johnson; four great-grandchildren, Joey Johnson, Autumn and Gage Phillips, and Victoria Perkins; nine sisters, Reba (husband, Thomas) Stapp of Jasonville, Euldean (husband, John) Pierce, Louise Batson and Helen (husband, Kenneth) Miller, all of Lewisville; Nora Lee Yergin and Ruth (husband, Gene) Miller of New Castle, Elsie (husband, Glen) Roettger of Cambridge City, Mildred (husband, James) Stewart of Rushville and Linda (husband, David) Bennett of Middletown; one brother, Lawrence (wife, Mona) Bow of New Castle; and several nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a daughter, Rhonda Kay Perkins; a son, John Thomas Johnson; a grandson, Gerald Allen Johnson; a great-granddaughter, Bailey Taylor Mitchell; and two brothers, Buford Ray and Ernest Howard Ray.
Funeral services were December 28 at Marshall & Erlewein Funeral Home in Lewisville with Pastor Mark Judy officiating. Burial followed in Park Cemetery in Greenfield. Visitation was December 27 at the funeral home.
Floyd Emery Bailey
March 8, 1921 – Dec. 23, 2006
Floyd Emery Bailey, 85, of Indianapolis, formerly of New Castle, died December 22 at Lakeview Manor in Indianapolis.
He was born March 8, 1921, in Bath County, Ky., a son of the late Emmet and Anna Bailey.
Mr. Bailey’s family moved to Indiana in 1929 and he attended Spiceland schools. He later married Knightstown resident LaVaughn Snodgress and they raised four children in New Castle. Mr. Bailey was a semi-professional baseball player who also worked in the New Castle Chrysler factory. When World War II erupted, he joined the U.S. Navy and served as a machinist’s mate in the Pacific theater. After the war, Mr. Bailey returned to Chrysler and retired in 1973 after having served over 30 years as a die sinker. He was known as a devoted husband, father and grandfather.
Survivors include three sons, Gene Bailey of Colorado Springs, Colo., Jim Bailey of Alamosa, Colo., and Ronnie Bailey of Atlanta, Ga.; one son-in-law, Ronnie Wheeler of Indianapolis; a brother, Pete Bailey of Indianapolis; nine grandchildren, Karen, Pam, Brad, Garon, Rusty, Brian, Zane, Laura and Katie; and several great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife; a daughter, Linda Wheeler; a grandson, Kurt Wheeler; and five brothers.
Funeral services were December 27 at Condo & Son Funeral Home in Wilkinson with Cindy Upchurch officiating. Burial followed at Glen Cove Cemetery in Knightstown. Visitation was December 26 at the funeral home.
Donice M. Sutherland
March 14, 1934 – Dec. 22, 2006
Donice M. Sutherland, 72, of New Castle, died December 22 at Ball Memorial Hospital in Muncie.
She was born March 14, 1934, in New Castle, a daughter of the late Ivan and Nona (Thomas) Bundy.
Mrs. Sutherland was raised in Kennard and attended school there. She was a homemaker who lived most of her life in New Castle. She worked at a nurse’s aid at Heritage House, The Waters and other area nursing homes. Mrs. Sutherland was a lifetime member of V.F.W.
Survivors include four children, Bill Miller and Rhonda Miller of New Castle, Marilyn Hill of Lewisville, Texas and Candy Edmonds of Shelbyville; five grandchildren; one great-granddaughter; two brothers, Larry Bundy of Knightstown and Dale Bundy of New Castle; and several nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by two brothers, Byron and Robert Bundy.
Funeral services were December 27 at Marshall & Erlewein Funeral Home in Lewisville with Pastor Marc Bundy officiating.
Ashley M. Sloan
Sept. 15, 1983 – Dec. 19, 2006
Ashley M. Sloan, 23, of Kennard, died December 19 at Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis.
She was born Sept. 15, 1983 in Greenfield, a daughter of Amy Wisehart and Ron Cox.
Miss Sloan attended Knightstown High School.
Survivors include her mother, Amy (husband, Rodney) Wisehart of Shirley; her father, Ron Cox of New Castle; a sister, Brittany Sloan of Kennard; a brother, Cory Wisehart of Shirley; maternal grandfather, Don (wife, Dianna) Sloan of Knightstown; maternal grandmother, Judy Sloan of Kennard; paternal grandfather, Ron Cox of New Castle; paternal grandmother, Rena White of New Castle; several aunts and uncles, cousins; and a niece.
She was preceded in death by her great-grandparents, Robert and Virginia Roland; great-grandmother, Roberta Hiner; great-grandfather, Pete Sloan; and an uncle, Randy Black.
Funeral services were December 23 at Condo & Son Funeral Home in Wilkinson with Ron Baker officiating. Burial followed in Glen Cove Cemetery in Knightstown. Visitation was December 22 at the funeral home.
Gladys M. Geise
Dec. 19, 1912 – Jan. 8, 2007
Gladys M. Geise, 94, of Rushville, died January 8 at Miller’s Merry Manor in Rushville.
She was born Dec. 19, 1912, in Rush County, a daughter of the late Floyd and Bessie (Dalrymple) Reddick.
Mrs. Geise, a 1931 Carthage High School graduate, was a homemaker who belonged to East Street Christian Church in Rushville. She also attended Main Street Christian Church and served as a Rush Memorial Hospital volunteer for many years. Her other memberships included JNH Golden Ladies and the Arlington East Hill Cemetery Association. On March 23, 1935, she married Lowell H. Geise.
Survivors include a son, Phillip J. (wife, Mary) Geise of Arlington; a grandson, Phillip L. (wife, Karen) Geise of Arlington; and a granddaughter, Jennipher (husband, Brad) Lawrence of Plattsburg, Mo.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Lowell H. Geise; a brother, Roy R. Reddick; and two sisters, Ruth Stevens and Lucille Newhouse.
Funeral services are at 10 a.m. Friday, January 12, at Todd Funeral Home in Rushville with Pastor Deann Anderson officiating. Burial will follow at Arlington East Hill Cemetery. Visitation is 4-8 p.m. Thursday, January 11, at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of Decatur County.
