Indiana Marriages, 1780-1992

Patricia Ann Kelly

January 2, 1935 – Oct. 11, 2005

Patricia Ann Kelly, 70, of Greenfield, died Tuesday, Oct. 11, in Indianapolis.

She was born Jan. 2, 1935, in Henry County, a daughter of the late Ernest and Alta (Winkler) Mendenhall.

Mrs. Kelly was a certified nurse’s assistant for over 20 years at Sugar Creek Convalescent Center in Greenfield, and most recently at Heritage House in New Castle. She attended New Castle High School.

Survivors include a daughter, Connie (husband, Scott) Waterman of Shirley; two sisters, Norma Lee Boggs of New Castle, and Betty Jean Kirk of Knightstown; two brothers, Jeffery Mendenhall of Shawnee, Okla., and David Mendenhall of Connersville; six grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Brian Glen Kelly in 1979; a daughter, Kathy A. Kelly in 2004; a son, Michael Wayne Kelly in 1994; and a brother, William Mendenhall.

Funeral services were at 10 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 15, at Pasco-Stillinger Funeral Home in Greenfield. Visitation was Friday, Oct. 14, from 4-8 p.m. at the funeral home. Burial will follow at a later date in Glen Cove Cemetery in Knightstown.

Elizabeth Mai (Betty) Kalleen Steele

Apr. 8, 1915 – Oct. 24, 2005

Betty Steele, 90, of Knightstown, died Monday, October 24, at her home in Knightstown, Indiana. She was born April 8, 1915, in Indianapolis, the daughter of the late Anna Mae (Schwenk) and James Laing Kalleen.

A 1932 graduate of Shortridge High School, she attended Butler University for two years and graduated from Northwestern University in 1937 with a bachelor’s degree in Sociology. She was a member of Kappa Kappa Gamma Sorority.

Mrs. Steele was a librarian with the Indianapolis Public Library, primarily at the Shoals Branch. After marrying Richard Monticue (Dick) Steele on August 31, 1940, and moving to Knightstown, she joined Dick’s Aunt, Clara Monticue, working at the Knightstown Public Library and later became head librarian. She was also a member of the Library Board of Trustees for several terms after she left the library staff. In 1958, she took her talent for working with children to the Knightstown Elementary School. She became a “very important person” to hundreds of second graders over the next 20 years and was honored with the Teacher of the Year Award.

Mrs. Steele was an active member of the Knightstown United Methodist Church, serving in many roles over the years and most recently as a member of Martha Circle. She was active in Tri Kappa, was a member of Shakespeare Club until her death, and belonged to Historic Knightstown, Inc. Knitting, reading and crossword puzzles were her favorite pastimes.

Survivors include her son, David Laing Steele, daughter-in-law, Diane (Graves) Steele, of Knightstown, and grandchildren, Drew Davies Steele of St. Louis, Missouri, and 1st Lt. Kalleen Halverson Steele of Kunsan Air Base, Korea. She also leaves nieces and nephews Bob Russell (Batavia, IL), Jim Russell (Roswell, GA), Cheryl (Kalleen) Beerbower (Fishers, IN), Chip Kalleen (Indianapolis, IN), Bob Wilcox (Sherman Oaks, CA), Julie Bubul (Oracle, AZ), Jenny (Bubul) Brown (Oak Harbor, WA), Steve Bubul (St. Paul, MN), and Rick Steele (Springfield, VA), and their families.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Richard; her daughter, Elizabeth Ann (Betsy) Steele; her parents, and her siblings and in-laws: Nancy (Kalleen) and Robert Russell, Agnes (Kalleen) and Jacob Wilcox, James Laing Kalleen, Jr. and Betty (Pfister), Mary Isabel (Steele) and Jake Bubul, and Theodore and Jane (Preston) Steele.

She was a source of love and inspiration to her family and friends throughout her long, rich life, which will be celebrated during visitation on Friday, October 28, from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m., and throughout her funeral on Saturday, Oct. 29, at 10 a.m. at Todd Funeral Home, Butcher Chapel, in Knightstown. Graveside service and burial will follow at Glen Cove Cemetery in Knightstown.

Memorial contributions may be made in the name of Betty Steele to the Alzheimer’s Association, Knightstown Public Library, or Knightstown United Methodist Church.

Jerry A. Hartgrove

Aug. 7, 1947 – Oct. 24, 2005

Jerry A. Hartgrove, 58, of Dunreith, died Monday, October 24, at Henry County Memorial Hospital.

He was born Aug. 7, 1947, a son of the late Ira Ray and Doris (Meyers) Hartgrove.

Mr. Hartgrove was a 1965 graduate of New Castle Chrysler High School and had worked R.E.M.C. for over 20 years. He had also worked as an assistant manager at Guarantee Auto in New Castle. Recently, he was Chief of the Dunreith Volunteer Fire Department, where he served for over 12 years. Mr. Hartgrove was on the National Road Association board, Southwest Medical District board, and several fire-fighting agencies. Some of his other memberships included National Historical Society, South Henry Regional Waste District board and the Moose Lodge in New Castle. He was an avid racing fan.

He married his wife, Cheryl, on June 22, 1975 and she survives. Other survivors include a son, Christopher Ray Hartgrove of New Castle; a daughter, Koriann Marie Hartgrove of Dunreith; a brother, Steve (wife, Barbara) Hartgrove of Glen Burnie, Md.; a niece, Stephanie (husband, Joe) Hancock and three nephews, John (wife, Gloria) Hartgrove, Jim and Joe Hartgrove, all of Glen Burnie, Md.

In addition to his parents, Mr. Hartgrove was preceded in death by his grandparents, Louis and Bessie Meyers.

Funeral services are at 2 p.m. Friday, Oct. 28 at Hinsey-Brown Funeral Service in New Castle with Rev. Tim Dice and an Indiana Volunteer Firefighters Association chaplain officiating. Visitation is from 3-8 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 27, at the funeral home. Burial will take place in Dunreith Cemetery following funeral services.

Memorial contributions may be given to the Dunreith Volunteer Fire Department with envelopes available at the funeral home.

Laura May Tapp

Feb. 4, 1961 – Oct. 22, 2005

Laura May Tapp, 44, of Knightstown, died Saturday, Oct. 22, at her home.

She was born February 4, 1961, in Rushville, a daughter of the late Ralph and Ruby (Purdle) Chew.

Mrs. Tapp lived in Knightstown most of her life. She was a graduate of Rushville Consolidated High School and was employed at Subway in Knightstown. She married Tim Tapp, Sr., on March 27, 1981, and he survives.

Other survivors include two sons, Tim Tapp II of Greenfield, and Christopher M. Tapp, also of Greenfield; a daughter, Janey Tapp, of Knightstown; four brothers, Max Chew, Tim (wife, Brenda) Chew, James (wife, Lori) Chew, and Kevin Chew, all of Knightstown; a sister, Ruthie (husband, Darryl) Dudley of Knightstown; one grandchild; several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents and a brother, Kenneth Chew.

A memorial fund has been established in Mrs. Tapp’s name at Ameriana Bank in Knightstown. There will be no visitation. Contributions to the memorial fund can be mailed or taken to Ameriana Bank & Trust, 22 N. Jefferson St., Knightstown. Please make checks payable to Laura Tapp Memorial Fund.

Mable Lura Pope

Mar. 17, 1916 – Oct. 24, 2005

Mable Lura Pope, 90, of Rushville, died Thursday, Oct. 20, at Henry County Memorial Hospital in New Castle.

She was born on March 17, 1916 in Martinsville, a daughter of the late Phillip and Vanessa (Moore) Blair. Mrs. Pope was a nurse at Hillside Haven Healthcare for 14 years. She married Ernest Marine and married to him until his death in 1967. She later married Victor Pope, who died in 1978.

Survivors include a son, Richard (wife, Pamela) Marine of Arlington; two daughters, Marilyn White of Muncie, and Doris Horton of Shirley; a sister, Virginia Dickerson of Winfield, Ala.; 20 grandchildren; several great grandchildren and great-great grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her two husbands.

Funeral services were Monday, Oct. 24, at Todd Funeral Home in Rushville with Rev. Hank Anderson officiating. Visitation was Sunday, Oct. 23, at the funeral home. Burial took place in Rushville’s East Hill Cemetery following funeral services.

Betty J. Fultz

June 22, 1930 – Oct. 31, 2005

Betty J. Fultz, 75, of Kennard, died Monday, Oct. 31, at St. Vincent Hospital in Indianapolis.

She was born June 22, 1930, in Olive Hill, Ky., a daughter of the late John and Vinnia (Adkins) Hill.

Mrs. Fultz worked in the cafeteria at Ingersol Steel. She was also a homemaker and a loving mother, who enjoyed cooking and homemaking.

Survivors include four sons, Ralph (wife, Bobbie) Fultz of Kennard; Steve Fultz, of Kennard; Dick (wife, Linda) Fultz of Clarksville, Tenn., and Sam (wife, Tammy) Fultz of New Castle; three daughters, Annie (husband, Steve) Jackson of Kennard, Margie and Margaret Fultz, both of Kennard; 14 grandchildren; four great great grandchildren; four brothers, John, Henry, Scott and David Hill; two sisters, Sue Moses and Christine Farrell; several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband, James Buster Fultz in 2003; a grandson, Michael Fultz; a brother, Wylie Hill; and a sister, Lulabell Chemhil.

Funeral services are at 10 a.m. Friday, Nov. 4, at Condo & Son Funeral Home in Wilkinson with Dillard Cole officiating. Burial will follow at Green Hills Memory Gardens in New Castle. Visitation is 4-8 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 3, at the funeral home.

Helen D. Houchins

Nov. 25, 1934 – Oct. 30, 2005

Helen D. Houchins, 70, of Indianapolis, died Sunday, October 30.

She was born Nov. 25, 1934 in Shelby County, where she was raised.

Survivors include her children, Chris, Jack and Paul Houchins, and Angie Pfeiffer; three sisters, Betty Kelley, Rose Miller and Mary Carpenter; two brothers, Frank Shutt and Russell Shutt, Jr.; 10 grandchildren and four great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by a daughter, Brenda Houchins Moos Adams.

Funeral services are at 2 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 3, at Feeney-Hornak Shadeland Mortuary in Indianapolis. Visitation is from 10 a.m. until time of service on Thursday, Nov. 3 at the funeral home.
