Elizabeth J. Long

Elizabeth J. Long, 87, of Shirley, died Tuesday, September 20, at Hancock Regional Hospital, Greenfield. She was born April 11, 1918, in Wilkinson, daughter of the late Lawrence and Gladys (Oldham) Johns.
Mrs. Long retired as vice president of Star Financial Bank in Shirley after 32 years of service. She was a member of the Shirley-Wilkinson United Methodist Church, Shirley Eastern Star #492 and the Shirley Historical Society. She was an avid euchre player and Pacer fan.
Survivors include her husband, Allen Long of Shirley; two sons, Jerry (wife Rose) Darling and William (wife Diana) Darling, all of Wilkinson; two daughters, Jeannine (husband Virgil) Campbell of Wilkinson and Lisa (husband Steven) Smith of Shirley; 17 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; a sister, Peggy DeLay of Lafayette; and several nieces and nephews.
Mrs. Long was preceded in death by a sister, Betty Brumfield.
Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m., Friday, September 23, at Condo & Son Funeral Home, Wilkinson, with the Rev. Jeff Mair officiating. Burial will follow in McCray Cemetery.
Visitation will be held at the funeral home, Thursday, September 22, from 4-8 p.m.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Shirley-Wilkinson United Methodist Church.
Evelyn C. Goss
Aug. 28, 1929 - Sept. 18, 2005
Evelyn C. Goss, 76, of Ocala, Fla., formerly of Knightstown, died Sunday, September 18. She was born in Knightstown, daughter of the late Howard and Idella (Jones) Conner.
Mrs. Goss attended Butler University and was a member of Tri Kappa sorority. She retired as an executive secretary and was of the Protestant faith.
Survivors include her husband, Leo Goss of Ocala, Fla.; three sons, Grant Appell, III of Castlebury, Fla., Gregory H. Appell of Palm Desert, Calif. and Leo Goss, Jr. of Perry, Ohio; three daughters, Elizabeth Uebelhor of Indianapolis, Kathryn Masten of Mishawaka and Sharon M. Reeves of Niles, Mich.; two sisters, Betty Eddy of Greenfield and Barbara Tice of Knightstown; nine grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
Emma Caroline Lee
Dec. 29, 1929 – Sept.13, 2005
Emma Caroline Lee, 76, of Knightstown, died Tuesday, September 13, at her residence, following a brief illness. She was born December 29, 1929, in Morristown, daughter of the late William and Ruth (Hargrove) Lee.
Ms. Lee was a 1949 graduate of Morristown High School. She retired from Ft. Benjamin Harrison in 1995 after approximately 25 years of service. She was a former member of the Methodist Church.
She is survived by two brothers, Thomas (wife Zona) Lee and George (wife Faye Ellen) Lee of Morristown; one sister, Mary Joe Reno of Rushville; dear friends, Rene (husband Philip) Jackson and their daughter, Philishia Jackson of Knightstown and Rosemary Kirby of Carthage; and several nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents, Ms. Lee was preceded in death by two brothers and five sisters.
Private services will be held at the convenience of the family. Hinsey-Brown Funeral Service, Knightstown, is in charge of the arrangements.
Stephen Wayne Bell
Apr. 12, 1947 – Sept. 21, 2005
Stephen Wayne Bell, 58, of New Castle, died Wednesday, September 21, at his home following an extended illness. He was born April 12, 1947, in Henry County, the son of Vivian Louise (Lykins) Davis and the late Thomas Woodrow Bell.
Mr. Bell attended Chrysler High School prior to attending college. He was a veteran of the Vietnam conflict and received numerous citations, including the Bronze Star. He was a member of American Legion Post #137 of New Castle and was also a member of the American Bikers’ Association. Mr. Bell was an avid woodworker and had a shop on I Avenue where he made cabinets and furniture. He also enjoyed working on cars, leather crafting and spending time with family and friends.
In addition to his mother, Mr. Bell is survived by one son, Stephen Wayne (wife Michelle) Bell II of Harford City; three daughters, Sonia Kay (fiancé Kevin Brunizer) of Wisconsin, Stephanie Lorrene Bell and Stacie Lorrane Bell, both of Albany; one grandson, Jacob Bell of Albany; four granddaughters, Kelsey Porter and Kayla Bell of Hartford City, Mackenzie Bell and Mackenna Bell of Albany; one brother, Samuel Bell of Indianapolis; one sister, Sharon (husband Tex) Benner of Hartford City; a nephew, Scott Phillip of Hartford City; and a niece, Sabrina Heavenridge of Hartford City.
Mr. Bell was preceded in death by his father and a brother, Raymond Bell.
Funeral services were held Saturday, September 24, 1 p.m., at Main-Frame & Davis Funeral Home, Broad Street Chapel, New Castle. Burial followed in Hillsboro Cemetery near New Castle.
Visitation was held at the funeral home, Friday, September 23, and one hour prior to the service on Saturday.
Lola Jones
Sept. 4, 1919 – Sept. 21, 2005
Mrs. Lola Jones, 86, longtime resident of Carthage, died Wednesday, September 21, at Brandywine Nursing Home in Greenfield. She was born September 4, 1919, in Logan, W.Va., daughter of the late Clarence and Rebecca (Gulley) Spence.
Mrs. Jones was a homemaker and a member of Carthage Early Methodist Church.
Survivors include two sons, Ronnie E. Jones of Denver, N.C., and Garnel Jones of Brownsville; a brother, Esra Spence of Carthage; two sisters, Olive Nolan of Carthage; 10 grandchildren; and 19 great-grandchildren.
Mrs. Jones was preceded in death by her husband Norman Jones; one son, one daughter, one grandchild, and several brothers and sisters.
Funeral services were held at Todd Funeral Home, Knightstown, Monday, September 26, 10 a.m., with Brother Chris King officiating. Burial followed in Glen Cove Cemetery.
Visitation was held Sunday, September 25, 2-5 p.m. at the funeral home.
Paul E. Turner
Mar. 25, 1940 – Sept. 22, 2005
Paul E. Turner, 65, of Shirley, formerly of Ingalls, died Thursday, September 22, at his residence following an extended illness. He was born March 25, 1940, son of Paul Turner and Dorothy (Spaulding) Britton.
Mr. Turner was a veteran of the U.S. Army. He retired from Kenny’s Transmission in Greenwood after 20 years of service. Following his retirement, he was self-employed as a transmission specialist.
Survivors include his wife, Zola Jones Turner of Shirley; his mother, Dorothy Britton of Greenfield; two daughters, Corey Sherman of Anderson and Paula Turner of Indianapolis; two stepdaughters, Brenda Hart of Shirley and Teressa (husband Roy) Meredith of Anderson; a stepson, Timothy (wife Carol) Jones of Cosatville; three grandchildren, Kevin Sherman, Curtis Sherman and Derrian Turner; four step-grandchildren, Summer Bowling, Daniel Hart, Jacob Meredith and Tiffany Smith; 12 great-grandchildren; three brothers, Richard Spaulding, Tim (wife Lynn) Spaulding and Brian Spaulding; and three sisters, Joyce (husband Bruce) Scott, Susie (husband Jeff) Gossage and Kathy (husband Dale) Happe.
Funeral services were held Monday, September 26, 2 p.m. at Hinsey-Brown Funeral Service, Knightstown, with the Rev. Bill Hilligoss and Jim Jackson officiating. Burial following at Glen Cove Cemetery.
Visitation was held September 26 from 11 a.m. until the time of the service, at the funeral home.
Hargis H. “Tony” Smith

Hargis H. “Tony” Smith, 71, of Knightstown, died Friday, September 23, in Marion County. He was born April 20, 1934, in Irvine, Ky., son of the late Henry and Mamie (White) Smith.
Mr. Smith was self-employed as a tree trimmer, sold videos and owned and operated Carl’s Cigar Store in Knightstown. He was an avid fisherman, hunter, and outdoorsman.
Survivors include his wife, Connie (Welch) Smith of Knightstown; two sons, Anthony Smith of Knightstown and Aaron (wife Laura) Smith of Laurel; a daughter, Cathy (husband Carl) Helm of New Castle; six grandchildren, Spencer Smith, Shyla Smith, Caitlan Smith, Abram Weston, Rachel Weston and Seth Marcum; one great-granddaughter, Andrea Voiles; three brothers, James Smith of Brookville, Thomas “Blackie” Smith of Metamora and Charles “Whitey” Smith of Laurel; two sisters, Elizabeth Couch of Hazard, Ky. and Evelyn Renfro of Laurel; and several nieces and nephews.
Mrs. Smith was preceded in death by four brothers and four sisters.
Funeral services will be held Thursday, September 29, 2 p.m., at Condo & Son Funeral Home, Wilkinson, with Randy Gross and David Gill officiating. Burial will follow in Glen Cove Cemetery.
Visitation will be held Wednesday, September 28, at the funeral home, 4-8 p.m.
