Lola Margaret Frye Roy

Jan. 2, 1916 – Aug. 16, 2005

Lola Margaret Frye Roy, 89, of New Castle, died Tuesday, August 16, at the home of her son, Roger Roy, and his wife, Patty, in New Castle. She was born January 2, 1916, in Salvisa, Ky., daughter of the late Statta Parsons Frye and Brent O. Frye.

Mrs. Roy retired from New Castle State Hospital. She was a foster grandparent and attended the Wesleyan Methodist Church, the Shirley Gospel Mission and the Harlan Church in Wilkinson.

Mrs. Roy is survived by five sons, James (wife Dean) Roy, Gary (wife Jean) Roy, all of Knightstown, Phillip Roy, Roger (wife Patty) Roy, all of New Castle and Ronnie (companion Joyce) Roy of Needles, Calif.; five daughters, Barbara Norfleet and Doris Steward, both of Carthage, Sharon (husband Floyd) Steward of Anderson; Darlus Johnson of Muncie; and Sue (husband Rick) Moore of Indianapolis; 27 grandchildren; 33 great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren.

Her husband of 62 years, Eddie Aaron Roy, preceded her in death in 1999. In addition to her parents, a sister, Juanita Bottoms; a brother, Ted Frye; two grandchildren; one great-grandchild; a special niece Betty Frye Young; two sons-in-law, Junior Norfleet and Robert Thomas Johnson; and special grandson Rogie Roy also preceded her in death.

Funeral services were held Friday, August 19 at the Harlan Church, with Rev. Bobby Slagle officiating. Burial followed in Harlan Cemetery.

Visitation was held Thursday, August 18, at Marcum Community Funeral Home and Friday, August 19, prior to the service, at the church.

Vernice Lucille Burch

Jan. 30, 1902 – Aug. 20, 2005

Vernice Lucille Burch, 103, of Bloomington, died Saturday, August 20, at the Bloomington Hospitality House. She was born January 30, 1902, in Bloomington, daughter of the late William Marion and Lillie Hannah (Pafford) Burch.

Ms. Burch was a high school teacher at Milan from 1925-1926 and a high school English teacher at Knightstown from 1926-1946. She retired as an academic counselor in the School of Education at Indiana University. She was a member of the First United Church (First Baptist Church) and a member of the Indiana University Emeritus Club.

Ms. Burch is survived by four nieces, Hannah Sue Colpitts, Harriette Thompson, Kay Pritchett and Jeanette Burch; two nephews, Robert East and William Franklin; seven great-nephews, John East, III, Tom East, George East, C.J. Pritchett, David Colpitts, Clark Franklin and Charles East; 12 great-nieces, Jane Summitt, Ann Scales, Theresa Thompson, Laura Meadows, Andrea Pritchett, Cyndia Sneeringer, Linda Colpitts, Sandy Stiles, Laura Perkins, Marsha Colpitts, Mary Lou Emmons and Debbie East; a cousin, Ray Pafford; several great-great-nieces and nephews; and several great-great-great-nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents, Ms. Burch was preceded in death by two sisters, Cledith Franklin Foley and M. Irene East; a brother, Clifford Burch; three nephews, Gene Burch, John East, Jr. and Fred East; and a great-nephew, Mike Pritchett.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday, August 24, at 2 p.m., at the Deremiah-Frye Mortuary, Bloomington, with Kathy Donley officiating. Burial will follow in Rose Hill Cemetery.

Visitation was held at the funeral home Tuesday, August 23.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Stone Belt Center or to someone in need.

Teresa Ann Miller

Jan. 7, 1968 – Aug. 21, 2005

Teresa Ann Miller, 37, of New Castle, died Sunday, August 21, from injuries sustained in an automobile accident. She was born January 7, 1968, in New Castle, daughter of Vaughn M. and Linda K. (Meese) Miller of New Castle.

Ms. Miller was a graduate of New Castle Chrysler High School. She was employed as a life skills technician with Cardinal Services in New Castle for the past three years. She enjoyed her family and friends, but lived her life for her sons.

In addition to her parents, she is survived by two sons, Bradley Allen Wolfe and Brandon Scott Wolfe, both of New Castle; one sister, Debra (husband James, Jr.) Dick of New Castle; paternal grandmother Ruby Miller of Knightstown; maternal grandparents Joe and June Eddington of Beech Grove; four aunts, Nancy White of Alabama, Leona Meese of New Castle, Velma (husband David) Thompson of Bicknell and Sharon (husband Donnie) Goble of Shelbyville; one uncle, Robert (wife Beverly) Meese of Anderson; and several cousins.

She was preceded in death by her paternal grandfather, Arthur Jason Miller and her maternal grandfather, Emmett Leon Meese.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m., Friday, August 26, at Main and Frame Funeral Home, Broad Street Chapel, New Castle, with Capt. Shannon Benner of the Salvation Army officiating. Burial will follow in Green Hills Memory Garden.

Visitation will be held Thursday, August 25, from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the funeral home.

The family requests that memorial contributions be made on her sons’ behalf to the Teresa Miller Fund, c/o Citizens State Bank. Envelopes are available at the funeral home.

Jack Morley Pinnick

July 23, 1917 – Aug. 4, 2005

Jack Morley Pinnick, 88, of Kissimmee, Fla., died Thursday, August 4, in Florida. He was born July 23, 1917, in Richmond, son of Emerson Pinnick and Juanita Morley Pinnick.

Mr. Pinnick attended Knightstown schools from second grade through high school. He was a pilot/instructor in the Army Air Corp. in WWII and a member of the American Legion Makinson Post #10. Mr. Pinnick enjoyed inventing things and was featured in Popular Mechanics with his home-made go kart.

Mr. Pinnick married Ruby McClure Oliver on April 28, 1951, and she survives. Also surviving are two daughters, Vivian E. (husband William) Gayton of Bellview, Fla. and Jacqueline (husband Jim) Cottle of Birmingham, Ala.; two grandsons, Jack P. (wife Melissa Krichko) Cottle of Winter Garden, Fla. and Jamie Emerson (wife Blakely Holland) Cottle of Ocoee, Fla.; great-granddaughter Peyton Marie Cottle of Winter Garden, Fla.; sister Virginia Moore of West Terre Haute; and brother Glen Pinnick of Seward, Ark.

Memorial services will be held September 10 at Unity Church, Birmingham, Ala. Internment will be at Ithaca Cemetery, Ithaca, Ohio. Arrangements are under the direction of Grissom’s Funeral Home, Kissimmee, Fla.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be mailed to the Jack Pinnick Memorial Scholarship Fund, Knightstown High School Alumni Association, P.O. Box 131, Knightstown, Ind. 46148.

Cynthia C. (Cupp) Swarts

May 12, 1951 – Aug. 22, 2005

Cynthia C. (Cupp) Swarts, 54, of Fortville, died Monday, August 22, at Community North Hospital, Indianapolis. She was born May 12, 1951, in New Castle, daughter of Doug and Joan (Collier) Cupp.

Mrs. Swarts was a graduate of Ball State University with a Masters degree in Architecture with a specialty in Historical Preservation. She was employed by Callihan Architects of Indianapolis for 10 years as a Liturgical Design Consultant and was past president of the Association of Consultants for Liturgical Space. She attended Northview Christian Life Church in Carmel and had been a member of the Celebration Singers. Mrs. Swarts was an accomplished pianist and enjoyed her grandchildren, sewing and knitting.

She married Frank A. Swarts on March 18, 1994, and he survives. In addition to her parents, also surviving are a son, Sam (wife Angela) Barnhart of Nashville, Tenn.; a daughter, Rachel (husband Steve) Jacobs of Nashville, Tenn.; a brother, Scott (wife Brenda) Cupp of Shirley; a sister, Terri (husband Tim) Gilliland of Vermont, Ill.; five grandchildren, Journey Barnhart, Honor Barnhart, Fiona Jacobs, Finnegan Jacobs and Eily Jacobs, all of Nashville, Tenn.

Funeral services will be held Friday, August 26, 11 a.m., at Seals Funeral Home, Fortville. Visitation will be held Thursday, August 25, from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m., and on Friday, August 26, from 10 a.m. until the time of the service.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Fellowship Christian Missionary, 5525 E. 82nd St., Indianapolis, In. 46250.

Lloyd Keith Ellis

July 1, 1925 – Aug. 19, 2005

Lloyd Keith Ellis, 80, of Little Rock, Ark., died Friday, August 19, at the Veteran’s Administration Hospital, Little Rock, Ark. He was born July 1, 1925, in Hancock County, son of the late Edgar Ellis and Uva (VanDuyn) Ellis.

Mr. Ellis was employed by the National Coach Company in Knightstown. While serving in the U.S. Navy, he survived a kamikaze attack during WWII and was awarded the Purple Heart. He was a member of the Knightstown Christian Church.

He is survived by his wife, Irma Wilson Ellis, of Little Rock, Ark.; a son, Kenneth (wife Beverly) Ellis of Marion; a daughter, Chris Hawkins of Fayetteville, Ark.; six grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; two sisters, Doris Linder of El Paso, Texas and Patty Riggs of New Castle.

Mr. Ellis was preceded in death by three brothers.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday, August 24, 1 p.m., at Todd Funeral Home, Knightstown, with Rev. Herb Mohler officiating. Burial will follow in Glen Cove Cemetery with military graveside services provided by the Knightstown American Legion.

Visitation will be at the funeral home on Wednesday, August 24, from noon to 1 p.m.

Dorothy Safewright Becraft

Apr. 19, 1934 – Sept. 18, 2005

Dorothy Safewright Becraft, 71, of Rushville, died Sunday, September 18, at Lincoln Center East, Connersville. She was born April 19, 1934, in Rushville, daughter of the late Sherman and Edna (Palmer) Safewright.

Mrs. Becraft retired as a court administrator of the Rush Circuit Court after 21 years of service. She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Rushville and The Rushville Roadrunners.

She married Wayne Becraft May 10, 1952, and he survives. Also surviving are daughter Beth (husband Doug) Jarman of Rushville; two sons, Richard (wife Phyllis) Becraft of Mitchell and Michael (wife Janet) Becraft of Knightstown; a brother, Sherman Safewright of Greensburg; two sisters, Frances Norris of Rushville and Pearl Casey of Shelbyville; and six grandchildren.

Mrs. Becraft was preceded in death by nine brothers and one sister.

Funeral services will be held at Todd Funeral Home, Rushville, Thursday, September 22, at 10 a.m., with Pastor James Ranard officiating. Burial will follow in East Hill Cemetery, Rushville.

Visitation was held Wednesday, September 21, from 4-8 p.m. at the funeral home.
