Donald Ray “Double D” Davis

Donald Ray “Double D” Davis, 76, of Greenfield, formerly of Knightstown, died Tuesday, August 2, at Regency Place Healthcare Facility in Greenfield. He was born November 4, 1928 in Peoria, Ill., son of the late Willie Arnum and Viola Mae (Jackson) Davis.
Mr. Davis was a 1946 graduate of Kennard High School. He enlisted in the Air Force during the Korean War and served at Travis Air Force Base where he processed troops and USO entertainers in and out of the Pacific war area. He was named the first Airman of the Month at the base and was captain of the base basketball team. Mr. Davis founded Davis Chrysler Plymouth in Knightstown and later added Dodge and X Plorer Motor Homes. He was awarded several Distinguished Dealer Awards from Chrysler and Frank Industries. He also owned Quality Motor Sales in New Castle from 1958 to 1965. He was a member of the Greensboro Masonic Lodge, past Patron of the Greensboro Eastern Star, Shirley Order of the Eastern Star, Knightstown American Legion, Scottish Rite Valley of Indianapolis, and Shrine Murat Temple of Indianapolis, where he served as aide to Potentate Richard Alexander. He was also past president of the Henry County Shrine. Mr. Davis was a volunteer at Hancock Memorial Hospital and an assistant coach of the seventh and eighth grade basketball team at the Indiana Soldiers’ and Sailors’ Children’s Home.
Mr. Davis is survived by his wife of 49 years, Mary Emma “Susie” Davis of Greenfield; a daughter, Carolyn (husband Bob) Kellams of Greenfield; three grandchildren, Julie (husband Ron) Burns of New Castle, Christi (husband James) Ferrell of New Castle and Casey (wife Kelly) Kellams of Greenfield; four great-grandchildren, Linsey and Josh Burns, Kane Schilling and Sebastian Kellams; a sister, Delores (husband Max) Bollinger of Kennard; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held Friday, August 5, at the Condo & Son Funeral Home, Wilkinson. Burial followed in Glen Cove Cemetery with military graveside rites performed by the Knightstown American Legion.
Visitation was held at the funeral home on Thursday, August 4, with Masonic services performed by the Greensboro Masonic Lodge.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Shriners Hospitals for Children.
Clovis E. Fields
Sept. 10, 1922 – Aug. 8, 2005
Clovis E. Fields, 82, of rural Shirley, died Monday, August 8, at Regency Place Healthcare Facility in Greenfield. He was born September 10, 1922, in Grant City, son of the late Rev. Conrad and Opal (Edwards) Fields.
Mr. Fields retired from Lift-A-Loft in Cowan. He was a member of the Grant City Wesleyan Church and a member of the Wesleyan Men. Mr. Fields was an avid basketball fan.
Survivors include a daughter, Deborah Sue Turmel of Florida; a son, Edward Lee Fields of Michigan; a sister, Emma Ruth Cox of Shirley; a brother, Peter Wesley Fields of Shirley; six grandchildren; two nieces; and two nephews.
Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. on Thursday, August 11, at the Grant City Wesleyan Church with the Rev. Charles Purciful officiating. Burial will follow in Glen Cove Cemetery.
Visitation will be held at the Condo & Son Funeral Home, Wilkinson, Wednesday, August 10, from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. and one hour prior to the services at the church on Thursday.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Grant City Wesleyan Church Building Fund.
Clancy “Buck” Compton Williams, Jr.
Mar. 31, 1928 – Aug. 8, 2005
Clancy “Buck” Compton Williams, Jr., of Cumberland, died Monday, August 8, at Community East Hospital, Indianapolis. He was born March 31, 1928 in Cumberland, son of the late Stella (Limbach) and Clancy Compton Williams, Sr.
Mr. Williams served in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict. He began his lifelong career as an auto mechanic by opening a garage in Lawrence. He then worked for Millers Standard Service in Cumberland. In 1962, Buck and his brother Robert Williams opened Williams Sinclair in Cumberland. The business closed in 1988 under the name of Williams Union 76 and Buck and his wife LaDonna retired to Nashville.
Mr. Williams is survived by his wife of 52 years, LaDonna (Settles) Williams; three children, Joni Lea Curtis, Tina Marie Waymire and Clancy Compton Williams, III; 11 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; six brothers, Jim, Charlie, Robert, William “Jake”, George and Dale Williams of Knightstown; four sisters, Lucille Hey, Mary Cook of Knightstown, Alice Overhoff and Verda Hall; two aunts, Mae Eads and Mary Buchanan; one uncle, Sherman Williams; and numerous nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, Mr. Williams was preceded in death by brothers Kenneth Allen Williams and Carl Sherman Williams.
Funeral services will be held Friday, August 12, 2 p.m., at Hendryx Mortuary, 11636 E. Washington St., Cumberland. Burial will follow in St. John United Church of Christ Cemetery.
Visitation will be held at the funeral home on Wednesday and Thursday, August 10 and 11, from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Riley Hospital for Children or the American Heart Association.
Marshall Herndon Gardner
June 28, 1912 – Aug. 11, 2005
Marshall Herndon Gardner, 93, of New Castle, died Thursday, August 11, at the Americare Living Center in New Castle. He was born June 28, 1912 in Madison County, son of the late Milton Gardner and Grace (Stewart) Gardner.
Mr. Gardner retired from Delco Remy in Anderson after 35 years of service. He lived in Versailles for several years following his retirement. Mr. Gardner was a member of Carthage Friends Church, the Rush Lodge #580, F. & A.M., the Knightstown York Rites and the National Muzzle Loading Association.
Mr. Gardner married Isabel Addison on August 31, 1937, and she survives. Also surviving are two daughters, Marilyn (husband Melvin) Manning of Knightstown and Marabel (husband Steve) Lowring of Ft. Wayne; two sisters, Laurel Bradburn of Manilla and Alma Carpenter of Pendleton; seven grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; and 16 great-great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a daughter, Marsha Karen Gardner; a brother, Eugene R. Gardner; two sisters, Violet Henley and Miriam Young; and one great-grandchild.
Funeral services were held Monday, August 15, at Todd Funeral Home, Knightstown, with the Rev. Howard Addison officiating. Burial followed in Arlington East Hill Cemetery.
Visitation and Masonic services were held Sunday, August 14, at the funeral home.
Dale M. Sweigart
Dec. 20, 1916 – Aug. 15, 2005
Dale M. Sweigart, 88, of New Castle, died Monday, August 15, at his residence following an extended illness. He was born December 20, 1916 in Mt. Summit, son of the late William and Elizabeth (Hickman) Sweigart.
Mr. Sweigart retired as a machine operator from Sweitzer Corporation in Indianapolis after 25 years of service. In the 1950s, he was a milkman with Meadow Gold Dairy in New Castle. He enjoyed fishing and all types of sports.
Mr. Sweigart married Helena Vaught on February 26, 1939, and she survives. Also surviving are a son, Michael (wife Sandee) Sweigart of New Castle; two grandchildren, Amanda (husband Roland) Dubé of Richmond, Ky. and Stacey Kelly (fiancé Jeff Wright) of Lawrenceburg, Ky.; two great-grandchildren, Michael and Caroline Dubé of Richmond, Ky.; two sisters, Joan Burk and Freda Turner, both of New Castle; two brothers, Rev. Ron (wife Barbara) Sweigart of Hagerstown and Rev. William (wife Donna) Sweigart; of Mitchell; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
In addition to his parents, Mr. Sweigart was preceded in death by a son, Stephen Sweigart in 1968, three brothers and four sisters.
Funeral services will be held at noon on Thursday, August 18, at the Main and Frame Funeral Home, Broad Street Chapel, New Castle, with Barbara Sweigart officiating. Burial will follow in South Mound Cemetery.
Visitation will be held Thursday, August 18, from 11 a.m. to noon at the funeral home. Joseph I. Davis and Steven A. Hacker are in charge of arrangements.
Leona Laverne Rance
Dec. 29, 1934 – Aug. 11, 2005
Leona Laverne Rance, 70, of Knightstown, died Thursday, August 11, at her home. She was born in Indianapolis on December 29, 1934, daughter of the late Oscar V. and Dorthy G. (Padgett) Pence.
Mrs. Rance was a florist. She owned and operated Treona’s Treasures in Lawrence until her retirement. She was a member of Knightstown Tri Kappa Chapter and a member of the Christian Women’s Club of Greenfield. She enjoyed crafts, camping, traveling and traditional jazz music.
Mrs. Rance is survived by her husband of 53 years, Everett Rance of Knightstown; one son, Kenneth (wife Debby) Rance of Clayton; two daughters, Pamela (husband Jeff) Shull of Shirley and Michelle “Chick” Rance of Knightstown; six grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; one brother, Robert Pence of Paxton, Ill.; a sister, Joan Blackwood of Indianapolis; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held Monday, August 15, at Condo & Son Funeral Home, with Rev. Eric Hickman officiating. Burial followed in Glen Cove Cemetery.
Visitation was held at the funeral home on Sunday, August 14.

Charles A. Pond
Mar. 30, 1929 – Aug. 18, 2005
Charles A. Pond, 76, of Rushville, died Thursday, August 18, at Decatur County Memorial Hospital in Greensburg. He was born March 30, 1929 in Jennings County, son of the late Ronald and Helen (Adams) Pond.
Mr. Pond retired as a machinist from R & S Engineering in Indianapolis. He was an Air Force veteran of the Korean War. Mr. Pond was a member of the Raleigh Christian Church.
Mr. Pond married Phyllis Burge in 1951, and she survives. Also surviving are a son, Charles Michael (wife Lucinda) Pond of Indianapolis; two daughters, Katherine Ann (husband Darrell) Cole of Spiceland and Beverly K. Pond of Rushville; a brother, Ronald Pond of Indianapolis; a sister, Ann (husband Rick) Brown of Townsville, Australia; and five grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m., Sunday, September 4, at the Raleigh Christian Church. Arrangements are under the direction of Todd Funeral Home, Rushville.
