Bridget Lee (Collins) Mayberry
July 7, 1976 - July 14, 2005
Bridget Lee (Collins) Mayberry, 29, of Greenfield, died Thursday, July 14. She was born July 7, 1976, daughter of Norman L. Collins and the late Bernie Collins.
Mrs. Mayberry was a 1995 graduate of Knightstown High School and worked as an animal technician at IUPUI.
She is survived by her husband, Arthur (Doug) Mayberry; a son, Cody Mayberry; her father, Norman L. Collins; mother Mary A. Collins; brother Christopher Collins; grandmother Minnie Collins; several aunts and uncles; and a niece and nephew.
Her mother, Bernie Collins preceded her in death.
Funeral services were held Monday, July 18, at Shirley Brothers Washington Memorial Chapel, Indianapolis. Burial followed in Park Cemetery, Greenfield.
Visitation was held Sunday, July 17, at the memorial chapel.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Greenfield Humane Society.
Rylee Raye Wisehart

Rylee Raye Wisehart was stillborn on Wednesday, July 6, at Howard Regional Health Services, Kokomo.
She is survived by her parents, Brian and Holly (Padgett) Wisehart, of Kokomo, formerly of the Knightstown area. Also surviving are two sisters, Natasha and Darrian, of Kokomo; maternal grandparents, Robert and Cheryl Sullivan of Carthage and Steve and Robin Padgett of New Castle; paternal grandparents Donald and Judith Wisehart of Shirley and David and Pamela Elliott of Summerfield, Fla.; maternal great-grandparents John and Judy Jackson of Carthage, Ray and Carolyn Padgett of New Castle and Leonard C. Sullivan of Morristown; great-great-grandmother Lucille Hall of New Castle; paternal great-grandparents Helen Wisehart of New Castle and Earl and Celia Whistler of Shirley; and several aunts, uncles and cousins.
Rylee was preceded in death by a sibling, stillborn on August 10, 1996.
Private graveside services were held at the Carthage Town Cemetery on Monday, July 11, with Pastor David Bonne officiating. Moster and Cox Mortuary, Rushville, was in charge of the arrangements.
Ralph R. Hollinger
Oct. 20, 1906 – July 19, 2005
Ralph R. Hollinger, 98, a resident of Dunreith since 1934, died Tuesday, July 19, at his residence. He was born October 20, 1906 in Darke County, Ohio, son of the late Amos and Effie (Brown) Hollinger.
Mr. Hollinger graduated from high school in Hollingsberg, Ohio, in 1925. He was a retired farmer and carpenter. He was a member of the Spiceland Friends Meeting, a 50-year member of the Spiceland Lions Club and a 50-year member of the Dunreith Fire Department. Mr. Hollinger also served on the Town Board of Dunreith for many years.
Mr. Hollinger is survived by a son, Gayle Hollinger of New Castle; two stepsons, Larry Specht of Dunrieth and Charles E. Fox of New Castle; two stepdaughters, Sharon Manning of Knightstown and Becky Helton of New Castle; a brother, Paul Hollinger of Virginia; a sister, Nola Vanderberg of Michigan; several step-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
Mr. Hollinger was preceded in death by his first wife, Dorothy (Deem) Hollinger and his second wife, Beulah (Fox) Hollinger; a stepdaughter, Beverly Dalton; two sisters, Blanche and Naomi; and a brother, Ray Hollinger.
Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. on Friday, July 22, at Hinsey-Brown Funeral Service, New Castle, with the Reverend Tim Dice officiating. Burial will follow in Glen Cove Cemetery.
Visitation will be held at the funeral home Thursday, July 21, from 4 – 8 p.m.
Herschel E. “Hersh” Cartwright
Apr. 6, 1921 – July 23, 2005
Herschel E. “Hersh” Cartwright, 84, of New Castle, died Saturday, July 23, at his residence following a brief illness.
He was born April 6, 1921, in New Castle, a son of the late Lloyd and Audrey (Nash) Cartwright.
A U.S. Army veteran of World War II, he served as a tank commander with the 811th tank destroyer battalion. Mr. Cartwright served in many battles, including the Battle of the Bulge.
He graduated in 1938 from Sherwood Music School in Chicago, IL. In 1984 he retired from the Social Security Admistration office in Muncie after 27 years. Mr. Cartwright was also a past sales manager for Western and Southern Life Insurance Company. He was a member of the New Castle VFW Post 1282 and enjoyed fishing, hunting and spending time with his family.
Survivors include a daughter, Carol Bovender; two sons: Kelly (wife Robin) Cartwright and Bruce (wife Diane) Cartwright, both of New Castle; four grandchildren: Cara, Kendra and Kelsa Cartwright, all of New Castle, and Melissa Cartwright of Greens Fork; one great granddaughter: Madyson Cartwright of New Castle; two step-granddaughters: Gabrielle Yount and Angela Perdoza, both of New Castle; one step-grandson: Joshua Yount, stationed with the U.S. Air Force at Tucson, AZ.
In addition to his parents, Mr. Cartwright was preceded in death by his wife, Zora E. Cartwright on April 6, 2004, and one brother, Charles Cartwright.
Funeral services were at 11 a.m., Wednesday, July 27 at Main and Frame Funeral Home in New Castle with Rev. Paul Davis officiating. Military graveside rites were conducted by New Castle American Legion Post #137 and VFW Post 1282. Burial followed in South Mound Cemetery Westlawn Addition in New Castle. Visitation was Tuesday, July 26 from 5-8 p.m. at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to Henry County Hospice or the American Cancer Society. Paul E. Howard
Mar. 5, 1943 – July 24, 2005
Paul E. Howard, 62, of Shirley, died Sunday, July 24 at Hancock Memorial Hospital.
He was born March 5, 1943, the son of Catherine (Longwell) Howard and the late Gilbert M. Howard.
Mr. Howard was a lifelong mechanic and owner of Paul’s Truck and Auto Repair. He enjoyed camping and fly fishing. He was a devoted family man, auto racing fan, and friend to many. Mr. Howard graduated from Spiceland High School in 1963 and later serviced in Vietnam with the U.S. military.
Survivors include his wife, Jenny (Slatier) Howard of Shirley; two sons: Terry (wife Theresa) Howard of Kennard; Tim (companion Marlaina) Howard of Shirley; three grandsons: Trevor, Corey and Caleb; two sisters: Carolyn Stotten of Knightstown and Pricilla Shumaker of Las Vegas, NV; several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his father.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, July 30, at Condo & Son Funeral Home in Wilkinson with Pastor Brian Campbell officiating. Burial will follow in McCray Cemetery in Wilkinson. Visitation will be from 12-2 p.m. Saturday, July 30 at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Lung Association.
Joe Hughes, Jr.
June 7, 1926 – July 22, 2005
Joe Hughes Jr. of New Castle, died Friday, July 22, at Millers Merry Manor in Rushville after an extended illness. He was born June 7, 1926, in Perry County, KY, to the late Joseph William and Caroline (Harmon) Hughes.
He retired from Chrysler Corporation in 1979 after 33 years of service. He was a member of the New Lisbon Christian Church and also served in the U.S. Army during World War II. He was a lifetime VFW member.
Survivors include his wife: Bessie B. (Chew) Hughes, whom he married January 17, 1976; three sisters: Faye Peters of Cincinnati, OH, Gerri Adams of Hyden, KY, and Bessie Yancey of Oneida, TN; a niece, Bess Heller; two nephews: Tim and Joe (wife Ashley) Heller; and four beloved cousins, Cloa New, Beulah Floyd, Pauline McPheron and Starlen Hughes.
In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his first wife, Flonnie, a son, Larry Joe Hughes, and several half-brothers, half-sisters and cousins.
Services were at 2 p.m. Monday, July 25, at Hinsey-Brown Funeral Service in New Castle with Minister Don Heller officiating. Burial followed in South Mound Cemetery-West Lawn Addition in New Castle. Friends called Sunday, July 24, from 4-8 p.m. at the funeral home.
Joseph C. Cooney
Nov. 19, 1919 – July 31, 2005
Longtime Knightstown resident and public servant, Joseph C. Cooney, 85, died Sunday, July 31, at Hancock Memorial Hospital in Greenfield. He was born November 19, 1919, a son of the late Edwin L. and Nellie (Scott) Cooney.
Mr. Cooney was 1937 graduate of Greenfield High School and a 1939 graduate of the Ft. Wayne Art School. He enlisted in the U.S. Army reserves to study radio repair and was called to active duty in the Signal Corps in June of 1943. He served in France, Luxembourg and Germany under General Bradley and was discharged in 1946. He began working for H. Oren Henley at the Henley Studio in Knightstown. He and his wife Phyllis purchased the studio in 1953 and operated it for almost 30 years. Many in the area have fond memories of Mr. Cooney taking their senior portraits and photographing school events. During this time he was elected to the board of directors of the Professional Photographers of Indiana and served as president. He was also a lifetime member of the Daguerre Club, a professional photography club. Mr. Cooney also received a national award for meritorious contributions to professional photography.
Because of his dedication to professionalism in his photography business, Mr. Cooney believed it was necessary to dress professionally, including wearing a tie. Regular ties tended to dip into his photographic chemicals, so he began wearing the bow ties for which he will be fondly remembered. Mrs. Cooney custom-made his bow ties for 45 years.
Mr. Cooney served as precinct committeeman in Knightstown for almost 50 years and was precinct committeeman for Wayne 2. He was elected to the Henry County Council in 1974 and held that seat until his death. During his time as a council member, he served on the Planning Commission, the Three Rivers Solid Waste Management board, the advisory board for the Henry County Youth Center, the Henry County Heart Society, the Henry County Economic Development Corporation, and the New Castle Transportation System. He was vice president of the board of the Southwest Ambulance Service and past president of the Kiwanis Club. Mr. Cooney was a 32nd degree Mason, a member of the Scottish Rite Shrine and was past post commander of Knightstown American Legion Post #152.
Along with Mrs. Cooney, Mr. Cooney received the G. Robert Kirby Award. Recently, Governor Mitch Daniels awarded him the Distinguished Hoosier Award.
Survivors include his wife of 64 years, Phyllis (Shafer) Cooney of Knightstown; a son, J. Darrel (wife Beverly) Cooney of New Castle; a daughter, Rheta (husband Thomas) Eversman of Jonesboro; two grandchildren, Cynthia (husband Robert) Lenz and Scott A. Cooney, both of New Castle; four great-grandchildren, Leslie, Tiffany and Misty Lenz and Cassidy A. Cooney, all of New Castle; three brothers, James (wife RoseNell) Cooney of Brownsburg, Jack C. (wife Victoria) Cooney of Connersville and Rev. Dr. Jerald (wife Joanne) Cooney of Springfield, Mo.; a sister, Aseneth (husband Harry) Taylor; his companion miniature poodle, Cheri; and several nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, Mr. Cooney was preceded in death by a baby brother, Jan Stutsman.
A memorial service will be held at 3 p.m., Wednesday, August 3, at Hinsey-Brown Funeral Service, Knightstown Chapel, with the Rev. Steve Brackney officiating.
Friends may call on Wednesday from 1-3 p.m. at the funeral home. Golden Rule Lodge #16 will perform Masonic services at 2:45 p.m.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial contributions be directed to the Henry County Heart Society, Southwest Ambulance Service or the Knightstown American Legion Building Fund, with envelopes available at the funeral home.
