Howard L. Richardson
Nov. 14, 1945 – June 7, 2005
Howard L. Richardson, 59, longtime resident of Connersville, died Tuesday, June 7, at the Fayette Memorial Hospital, Connersville. He was born November 14, 1945 in New Castle, son of the late Thaddeus and Irene M. (Sherwood) Richardson.
Mr. Richardson was a 1963 graduate of Mays High School. He worked for area farmers.
Survivors include two sons, William “Bill” (wife Amey) Richardson of Mississippi and Mark “Stormy” Richardson of Shirley; four grandchildren; two sisters, Phyllis (husband Paul) Solomon of Carthage and Barbara A. Richardson of Knightstown; one brother, Thaddeus Richardson, Jr. of Spiceland; and several nieces and nephews.
A graveside service was held Saturday, June 11, at Raleigh Cemetery in Rush County, with Rev. Eric Hickman officiating.
Visitation was held at the Marshall & Erlewein Funeral Home, Lewisville Chapel on Friday June 10.

Ellsworth S. Cook
Nov. 27, 1930 – June 8, 2005
Ellsworth S. Cook, 74, longtime resident of Carthage, died Wednesday, June 8, at Hancock Memorial Hospital, Greenfield. He was born November 27, 1930, in Blatchford, Ohio, son of the late Sam and Edna (Coakley) Cook.
Mr. Cook was a veteran of the U.S. Army and was an avid CB radio operator, known as 194. He was employed by Container Corporation of America (Smurfit-Stone) for 29 before retiring. Mr. Cook was a member of the Carthage Wesleyan Church.
Mr. Cook married Learl Conley on February 26, 1967, and she survives. Also surviving are six sons, Sam (wife Kathy) Cook of Mansfield, Ohio, James (wife Lisa) Cook of Knightstown, Gary (wife Debbie) Logan of Oklahoma, Robert Logan of Indianapolis, Danny Logan of Oklahoma and Mark (wife Mary) Logan of Carthage; five daughters, Windy Ray of Mansfield, Ohio, Tina (husband Clark) Linwood of Florida, Cathy (husband Darren) Gillick of Oklahoma, Annette Dishman of Greenfield and Hollie (husband Jack) Steward of Carthage; 17 grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.
In addition to his parents, Mr. Cook was preceded in death by a daughter, two brothers, four sisters and one grandchild.
Funeral services were held Saturday, June 11, at Todd Funeral Home, Carthage Chapel, with Pastor Harold Smith officiating. Burial followed in Riverside Cemetery.
Visitation was held Friday, June 10, at the funeral home.
Edward Dean Williams
Sept. 17, 1912 – June 9, 2005
Edward Dean Williams, 92, lifelong resident of Knightstown, died Thursday, June 9, at his residence. He was born September 17, 1912, in Knightstown, son of the late Fisher and Leila (Davis) Williams.
Mr. Williams retired from Delco Remy in 1978. He was an avid golfer and a former manager of the Knightstown Golf Course.
Survivors include two sons, Dean Edward Williams of Carthage and James Allen Williams of Anderson; one daughter, Leila Nancy Livingston of Knightstown; nine grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.
Mr. Williams married Wanda Lavaughn Sisson on November 29, 1936 and she preceded him in death. Also preceding him in death were one brother and one sister.
Funeral services were held Sunday, June 12, at Todd Funeral Home, Knightstown, with Rev. Mervin Kilmer officiating. Graveside services were held Monday, June 13, in Glen Cove Cemetery.
Visitation was held prior to the funeral service, Sunday, June 12.
James H. Swindell
Apr. 5, 1923 – June 7, 2005
James H. Swindell, 82, of Shirley, died Tuesday, June 7, at Rawlins House Nursing Home, Pendleton. He was born April 5, 1923, in Henry County, son of the late Daniel W. and Sheila (Bussell) Swindell.
Mr. Swindell was a 1941 graduate of Wilkinson High School and served in the U.S. Army during World War II. He is a retired farmer and was a used farm equipment dealer. Mr. Swindell was a member of the Wilkinson Church of Christ.
His wife of 56 years, Virginia Louise (Williams) Swindell, of Shirley, survives. Also surviving are four sons, Robert (wife Mary) Swindell of Homer, La., James (wife Linda) Swindell of Luther, Okla., John (wife Jean) Swindell of Murphy, N.C. and Joseph (wife Jennifer) Swindell of Wilkinson; two daughters, Jane (husband Jerry) Brothers of Spring, Texas and Mary (husband Bill) Frazier of Goodland, Kan.; a daughter-in-law, Shirley (husband Max) Retherford of Windfall, Ind.; 11 grandchildren, Lisa Richey, Natalie, Michael, Lindsay and Wesley Swindell, Terry Miller, Colin and Todd Brothers, Jordan, Taylor and Dane Frazier; two great-grandchildren, Amanda and Emily Richey; a sister, Dorothy Noell of Indianapolis; and two nieces.
In addition to his parents, Mr. Swindell was preceded in death by a grandson, Ryan Brothers.
Funeral services were held Friday, June 10, at the Condo & Son Funeral Home, Wilkinson, with Ron Baker and Jim Jackson officiating. Burial followed in McCray Cemetery, Wilkinson.
Visitation was held Thursday, June 9, at the funeral home.

Richard “Dick” Ratliff
Nov. 26, 1952 – June 13, 2005
Richard “Dick” Ratliff, 52, of Knightstown, died Monday, June 13, following an extended illness. He was born November 26, 1952, son of Phyllis (Compton) Ratliff and the late Don Verlon Ratliff.
Mr. Ratliff had worked for 20 years at Bob’s Antenna Service in Richmond. He attended and was very active in the Greensboro United Methodist Church. He enjoyed restoring old cars. Mr. Ratliff had been involved with the Serenity Group Chapter of Alcoholics Anonymous in Richmond.
In addition to his mother, survivors include his wife of more than 20 years, Marilyn (Holloway) Ratliff; three sisters, Donna (husband Frank) Lamp of Muncie, Darlene (husband Jeff) Wright of Yorktown and Denise (husband Lyndol) Reed of Muncie; three brothers, Dan (wife Debra) Ratliff, Donald Edward Ratliff and Darren Ratliff, all of Muncie; many nieces and nephews; many great nieces and nephews; and his mini-dachshund Dewey.
Funeral services were held Wednesday, June 13, at Hinsey-Brown Funeral Service, Knightstown Chapel, with Rev. Mark Powell officiating. Burial followed at Beautiful Gardens of Memory in Marion.
Visitation was held Tuesday, June 12, at the funeral home.

Hershel Ross McFarland
Feb. 7, 1954 – June 13, 2005
Hershel Ross McFarland, 51, of Batesville, died Monday, June 13, at Margaret Mary Hospital, Batesville. He was born Feb. 7, 1954.
Funeral services were held Wednesday, June 15, at Burns Funeral Home, Milroy, with Rev. Richard Waddle officiating. Visitation was held prior to the funeral services.
Kenneth E. Miller
Apr. 6, 1925 – June 17, 2005
Kenneth E. Miller, 80, of Spiceland, died Friday, June 17 at his home, following an extended illness. He was born April 6, 1925, in New Paris, Ohio, son of the late Ward and Blanche (Martin) Miller.
Mr. Miller was a World War II veteran having served in Italy, France and Germany. He was awarded a purple heart. He had been employed at Belden Corporation in Richmond for 20 years and had also been a truck driver for G.W. Pierce of Spiceland. For 5 ½ years, Mr. Miller had been employed at Wal-Mart in New Castle in the maintenance department.
Survivors include his wife of 18 years, Phyllis Miller of Spiceland; four children, Dwight Miller of Centerville, Connie (husband Stewart) Hamilton of Pickens, S.C., Shirley (husband Brent) Bird of Dayton, Ohio and Judy Davis of Greensfork; six grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; eight stepchildren, Michael (wife Wanda) Pope of Greensboro, Ricky (wife Susie) Pope of Mooreland, Marty Pope of Maxwell, Danny Pope of Aurora, Todd Pope of New Castle, Brenda Overton of Arizona, Robbie (husband Dan) Morrow of New Castle and Teresa Rodman of New Castle; 14 step-grandchildren; ten step-great-grandchildren; a sister, Cloma (husband John) Chasteen of New Paris, Ohio; and several nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, Mr. Miller was preceded in death by two brothers, Gerald and Lowell Miller.
Funeral services were held Monday, June 20, at Hinsey-Brown Funeral Service, Knightstown Chapel, with Rev. Elthur Hale officiating. Burial followed in Glen Cove Cemetery. Military rites were conducted by the Knightstown American Legion Post 152.
Visitation was held at the funeral home Sunday, June 19.
