Indiana Marriages, 1780-1992

George L. Neel

Jan. 3, 1943 –Dec. 7, 2004

New Castle resident, George L. Neel, 61, died Tuesday, December 7 at his home following an extended illness. He was born January 3, 1943 in New Castle, a son of the late Wallace Neel and Ellen (Jones) Neel Cook.

Mr. Neel graduated in 1961 from Chrysler High School and was a member of the National Guard. He retired from the Chrysler Corp. in 1979 due to a disability. He lived several years in Columbus, Ohio where he had many friends. He loved fishing, golfing, Nascar Racing and I.U. basketball. He also loved spending time with his family and friends. He was a member of the Moose, Eagles and the American Legion, all in New Castle.

Survivors include his wife, Christina (South) Neel; one son, Greg Neel of New Castle; one sister, Dorothy (husband Everett) Brown; a half-brother, Arthur (wife Peggy) Neel of Clay City, Ky.; one uncle, Verlie (wife Martha) Jones of Anderson; one aunt, Judy Jones of Hamilton, Ohio; several nieces and nephews, great-nieces and nephews and special great-niece and caregiver, Ashley Brown.

In addition to his parents, a sister, a grandson and an uncle preceded him in death.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Friday, Dec. 10 at Hinsey-Brown Funeral Service in New Castle with Rex Madison officiating. Burial will follow in South Mound Cemetery West Lawn Addition.

Friends may call from 4-8 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home. The American Legion and the Veterans of Foreign Wars will conduct military rites.

Paul J. Walker

Mar. 6, 1920 – Dec. 11, 2004

Knightstown resident, Paul J. Walker, 84, of Knightstown died Saturday, December 11 at Kindred Hospital South in Greenwood after a brief illness. He was born March 6, 1920 in Newberry, a son of the late Eber and Effie (Boyd) Walker.

Mr. Walker retired from Dana Corporation in 1977 after 39 years of service. He had also worked for Butcher Funeral Home and was a driver for Butcher Ambulance Service. A veteran of the U.S. Navy, he served aboard the aircraft carrier U.S.S. Nassau and was a member of VFW Post #8257 and American Legion Post #152. He was a 1938 graduate of Knightstown High School and enjoyed traveling.

Survivors include his wife of 64 years, Marjorie (Trimble) Walker of Knightstown; a daughter, Barbara (husband Gene) Smith of Rushville; a son, Ronald (wife Debra) Walker of Anderson; five grandchildren, Tim (wife Jennifer) Walker of Indianapolis, Tina Howard of Fishers, Ronald Walker Jr. of Knightstown, Steve (wife Alicia) Walker of Speedway and Amber (husband Derrick) Nuffer of Fishers; three step-grandchildren, Mary Ann Boone of Anderson, Jill Liter of Indianapolis and Jason O’Connor of Navarro, Fla; nine great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Harold Walker and Jesse Walker.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. today (Wednesday, Dec. 15) at Hinsey-Brown Funeral Service, Knightstown Chapel with Rev. Richard Thayer officiating. Burial will follow at Glen Cove Cemetery. Knightstown American Legion Post #152 will conduct military graveside services.

Visitation was held Tuesday, December 14 at the funeral home.

Memorial contributions may be given to the American Heart Association.

Velma E. Leisure

Nov. 4, 1917 – Dec. 10, 2004

Velma E. Leisure, 87, of Carthage died Friday, December 10 at Hancock Co. Memorial Hospital following a brief illness. She was born November 4, 1917 in Mohawk, a daughter of the late Fletcher W. and May (Kimberly) Edwards.

A former resident of Charlottesville, she enjoyed quilting and loved flowers.

Survivors include her husband of 66 years, Gene Leisure; two sons, Kenneth L. (wife Anna) Leisure of Carthage and Donald W. (wife Helen) Leisure of Daleville; two daughters, Donna M. (husband David) Oakes of Greenfield and Judy K. Browning of Knightstown; eight grandchildren; 1 step-grandchild; 13 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; three brothers, Norman Edwards and Jerry (wife Joyce) Edwards, both of Carthage, and Rex (wife Linda) Edwards of Greenfield; two sisters, Maxine (husband Carl) Carson of Carthage and Dorothy (husband Bill) Robertson of Cincinnati, Ohio; several nieces and nephews.

Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by two brothers, Carl and Paul Edwards.

Services were held Monday, December 13 at Hinsey-Brown Funeral Service-Knightstown Chapel with Rev. Roger Campbell officiating. Burial was in Glen Cove Cemetery.

Visitation was held at the funeral home Sunday, December 12.

Homer L. Hensler

Jan. 31, 1913 – Dec. 9, 2004

Homer L. “Doc” Hensler, 91, of Carthage died Thursday, December 9 in Hancock Memorial Hospital in Greenfield. He was born January 31, 1913 in Amboy, a son of the late Homer and Frances (Simmonds) Hensler Jr.

Mr. Hensler, a veterinarian, attended Ohio State University and received his veterinary medicine degree from Texas A&M in College Station, Texas. He had lived in Carthage for 54 years. He was a 50-year member of the Carthage Lions Club, 50-year member of B.P.O.E #1307 at Rushville and a member of Rushville F.O.P. He was a former director of State Bank of Carthage and a member of the American Veterinary Medical Assoc. He was an avid fisherman and outdoorsman.

On June 22, 1944, he married Agnes Kolbasinski and recently celebrated their 60 wedding anniversary. She survives.

Other survivors include one sister, Dorothy Rush of Bellevue, Wash. and several nieces and nephews.

Services will be held at 10 a.m. today (Wednesday, Dec. 15) at Todd Funeral Home in Carthage with Pastor Roger Campbell officiating. Burial will be in Riverside Cemetery.

Visitation was held Tuesday, December 14 at the funeral home.

Barbara C. Cook

Dec. 18, 1928 – Dec. 10, 2004

Former Rushville resident, Barbara C. Cook, 75, of Peoria, Ill., died Friday, December 10 in Manor Care in Peoria. She was born December 18, 1928 in Shelbyville, a daughter of Walter and Lily (Abercrombie) Addison.

Mrs. Cook was a homemaker and a member of Entre Nous, the Peoria Women’s Club, and a member of Psi Iota Psi Sorority. She was also a member and volunteer at University United Methodist Church.

She is survived by a daughter, Trina (husband Bill) Hunt of Peoria; one son, Chris (wife Mary) Cook of Boulder, Colo.; and two grandchildren.

She married William O. Cook on August 7, 1949 in Carthage and he preceded her in death on April 25, 1986 in Sioux City, Iowa. She was also preceded in death by her parents and one brother and one sister.

Private family services will be held with the Rev. Gene Mace officiating. Interment will be in Swan Lake Memory Gardens.

Dana F. Spegal

July 11, 1916 – Dec. 13, 2004

Dana F. Spegal, 88, a resident of Wilkinson, died Monday, December 13 at Hancock Memorial Hospital in Greenfield. She was born July 11, 1916 in Greenfield, a daughter of the late Austin and Cora (Devers) Boots.

Mrs. Spegal was a lifelong homemaker and housewife. She was also a Girls 4-H leader in Brown Township.

She is survived two sons, Larry (wife Eleanor) Spegal of Shirley and Joe (wife Marsha) Spegal of Pendleton; two daughters, Patsy (husband Bob) Hall of Wilkinson and Sandra (husband Buck) Jones of Wilkinson; 13 grandchildren, four step-grandchildren, 27 great-grandchildren, nine step-great-grandchildren and one great-great-granddaughter.

Preceding her in death were: her husband Carl Spegal in 1991; four brothers, Dale, Charles, Delmer and Joe Boots; and one sister, Lenor Cottrell.

Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Friday, December 17 in the Condo & Son Funeral Home in Wilkinson with Pastor Jack Holliday officiating. Burial will follow at McCray Cemetery in Wilkinson.

Friends may call at the funeral home from 4-8 p.m. Thursday, December 16.

Dovie Butler Owens

July 25, 1911 – Dec. 22, 2004

A resident of Carthage, Dovie Butler Owens, 93, died Wednesday, December 22 at her residence. She was born July 25, 1911 in Lewis County, Ky., a daughter of the late Frank and Sarah (Duncan) Littleton.

Mrs. Owens was a homemaker.

She is survived by two daughters, Lora June (husband Haskel) Back of Carthage and Vada O. (husband Romey) Hilderbrand of Carthage; eight grandchildren, Stanley (wife Judy) Back of McCordsville, Stirl Back of Knightstown, Billy (wife Gretchen) Back of Knightstown, Joan (husband Steve) Dick of Carthage, Jeannie (husband Jeff) Sorrell of Carthage, Steve (companion Debbie) Hilderbrand of Carthage, Connie (husband Larry) Rumple of Knightstown and Scott (wife Shelly) Hilderbrand of Carthage; 17 great-grandchildren; 18 great-great-grandchildren; and one sister, Pernie Webb of Morehead, Ky.

She was preceded in death by her first husband, James Butler; second husband, Harley Owens; two sisters, Lola Lawhorn and Phyllis Lawhorn; five brothers, Della, Earl, Albert, Russell and Herb Littleton.

Services were held Tuesday, December 28 in the Pleasant Valley Gospel Tabernacle Church in Olive Hill, Ky. with Randy Binion officiating. Burial was in Walnut Grove Cemetery in Olive Hill.

Visitation was held Monday, December 27 at the church. Arrangements were handled by the Condo & Son Funeral Home in Wilkinson.
