Indiana Marriages, 1780-1992

Ralph Madison DeBoard

Feb. 1, 1917 – Nov. 15, 2004

Former Carthage resident, Ralph Madison DeBoard, 87, died in Greenwood Monday, Nov. 15. Ralph was born February 1, 1917 in Carter County, Ky., a son of the late James and Carrie DeBoard.

Mr. DeBoard was a farmer until he enlisted in the military where he served his country in several countries. He was a veteran of WWII and the Korean War, serving in the U.S. Army and the Air Corps receiving an honorable discharge in 1952. Ralph retired from Container Corp. of America in Carthage on Feb. 1, 1979 after 28 years of service.

DeBoard enjoyed attending church services at Trinity Baptist and Emmanuel Church of God. He also liked to watch Pacers and I.U. basketball games.

He married Ona Lee Logan on Jan. 5, 1949 and she preceded him in death in 1996. They lived together in Carthage, Bell Fountain, Ill. and Indianapolis. Ralph later moved to Greenwood and resided there until his death.

Surviving are three children, Shirley Hauger of Indianapolis, James DeBoard of Kokomo and Teresa (Terri) LeBeau of Greenwood; one brother, Homer Fannin of Parker City; seven grandchildren and five great-grandchildren; several brother and sister-in-laws and nieces and nephews.

Also preceding him in death were three sisters and one brother.

Services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, Nov. 19 at Todd Funeral Home, Knightstown Chapel.

Calling will be from 4-8 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 18 and one hour prior to services on Friday.

Walter Wagner

April 17, 1917 – Nov. 20, 2004

Rushville resident Walter Wagner, 87, died Saturday, Nov. 20 at Methodist Hospital, Indianapolis. He was born April 17, 1917 in Maple Valley, a son of the late Clark and Effie (Vanoustram) Wagner.

Mr. Wagner lived most of his life in Rushville and worked as a truck driver for Bausback for over 55 years. On June 20, 1936 he married Marjorie McClurg and she preceded him in death July 12, 1999.

He is survived by two daughters, Beverly (husband Wayne) Kennedy of Dunedin, Fla. and Nancy (husband Howard) Pierce of Rushville; one brother, Frank Wagner of Shirley; four sisters, Alberta (husband Jim) Stickler of Muncie, Alice Langley of Spiceland, Mary (husband Jim) Gray of New Castle, and Evelyn Langley of Spiceland; three grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Services will be held at 1 p.m. today (Wednesday, Nov. 24) at Moster & Cox Mortuary in Rushville with Rev. Jeff Edwards officiating. Burial will be in Arlington East Hill Cemetery.

Visitation will be from noon to 1 p.m. on Wednesday.

Patty Jean Ashby

Aug. 1, 1930 – Nov. 26, 2004

Wilkinson resident, Patty Jean Ashby, 74, died Friday, Nov. 26 at the Indiana Heart Hospital in Indianapolis. She was born August 1, 1930 in Wilkinson, a daughter of the late Chester and Nola (Collier) Kemerly.

Mrs. Ashby was a lifelong homemaker and loved to cook, sew, help on the farm, garden and spend time with her family. She enjoyed traveling to the Smokey Mountains and listening to mountain music.

She is survived by her husband, Gene Ashby of Wilkinson; three daughters, Diana Barton of Cherokee, N.C., Michelle “Shelly” Ashby of Wilkinson, and Julie (husband Roy) Spencer of Pendleton; 10 grandchildren, Tony Ashby, Kevin (wife Julie) Ashby, Ryan (wife Angela) Barton, Michael and Dakota Spencer, Melinda Fields, Melissa Robinson, Gena, Missy and Annie (Ashby); and three great-grandchildren, Kayla and Jackson Barton and Breanna Ashby; several nieces and nephews.

A son Doyle Ashby and a sister, Julia Gray, preceded her in death.

Funeral services were held Tuesday, Nov. 30 in the Condo & Son Funeral Home in Wilkinson with Rev. Jeff Mair officiating. Burial was in McCray Cemetery in Wilkinson.

Visitation was held at the funeral home Monday, Nov. 29.

Karey B. Meeks

Nov. 30, 1929 – Nov. 25, 2004

Karey B. “K.B.” Meeks, 74, of Knightstown died Thursday, November 25 at Ball Memorial Hospital after a brief illness. He was born November 30, 1929 in Bowling Green, Ky., a son of the late Eugene and Nellie Cassady Meeks.

Mr. Meeks retired from AT&T in 1983 after 30 years of service and also retired from farming in 1993. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army and a member of the First Baptist Church of Knightstown and Gideons International.

Services were held Monday at the First Baptist Church of Knightstown with Rev. Tim Smith and Gary Kirchoff officiating. Burial was in Glen Cove Cemetery. Knightstown American Legion Post 152 conducted military graveside rites.

Visitation was held Sunday, Nov. 28 at Hinsey-Brown Funeral Service Knightstown Chapel and one hour prior to the service on Monday.

Memorial contributions can be made to the American Cancer Society and Gideons International.

Ronald W. Smarz

Nov. 23, 1946 – Nov. 29, 2004

Ronald W. Smarz, 58, of Knightstown died Monday, Nov. 29 at Richard Roudebush Veterans Hospital in Indianapolis following an extended illness. He was born November 23, 1946 in Louisiana, a son of the late George and Lola Jean Kierce Smarz.

A veteran of the U.S. Navy, he served during the Vietnam Conflict on the USS Ranger aircraft carrier. He was a truck driver for several years. Mr. Smarz was a member of the Grant City Wesleyan Church and a member of American Legion Post #0777 in Indianapolis. He also served as a volunteer for the Richard Roudebush Veterans Hospital.

Survivors include his wife, Evelyn L. (Deck) Smarz, whom he married December 4, 1976; one brother, Chuck Junot of Sun City, Ariz.; one sister, Vicky Hofmaster of Port Charlotte, Fla.; several nieces and nephews and great nieces and nephews.

Besides his parents, a sister preceded him in death.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Friday, Dec. 3 at Hinsey-Brown Funeral Service Knightstown Chapel with the Rev. Larry Basey officiating. Burial will follow at Glen Cove Cemetery in Knightstown.

Friends may call from 1-2 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.

Virginia L. Smiley

Mar. 24, 1922 – Dec. 3, 2004

Virginia L. Smiley, 82, of Knightstown, died unexpectedly Friday, December 3. She was born March 24, 1922 in Bell County, Ky., a daughter of the late Finley Charles and Sarah Ethel (Hurley) Bell.

Mrs. Smiley was a 1940 graduate of Mays High School and was a former resident of Spiceland. She had served as a Women’s Leader for the Henry County Farm Bureau and was also an active member of the Center Christian Church in Mays for several years. A homemaker most of her life, she loved to cook and loved music and flowers.

Survivors include her husband of over 61 years, George R. Smiley of Knightstown; three children, Brenda (husband Randy) Maloyed of Spiceland, John Smiley of Rogers, Ark., and Mark Smiley of Anderson; seven grandchildren, Jonathan (wife Gretchen) Maloyed of Matthews, Mo., Jack Maloyed of Spiceland, Reid (wife Alison) Smiley of Chattanooga, Tenn., Jill (husband Jason) Craven of Jacksonville, Fla., Jesse Smiley of Indianapolis, Stephanie and Sarah Smiley, both of Anderson; six-great-grandchildren, John Ross Maloyed, Emma Marie Maloyed, Troy Crave, Claire Smiley, Brandon Kendall and Emma Grace Smiley; and one sister-in-law, Madalene Marie Smiley of Indianapolis.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. today (Wednesday, Dec. 8) at Hinsey-Brown Funeral Service Knightstown Chapel with the Rev. Bill Worrell officiating. Burial will follow in Center Cemetery in Mays.

Visitation was held at the funeral home Tuesday, Dec. 8.

Memorial contributions may be given to the Center Christian Church.

David L. Robbins

Feb. 18, 1934 – Dec. 5, 2004

David L. Robbins, 70, a resident of Wilkinson, died Sunday, December 5 at Johnson Memorial Hospital in Franklin. He was born February 18, 1934 in Clay County, a son of the late William and Ola Robbins.

Mr. Robbins was a member of the Operating Engineers Local 103 and was a heavy machine operator for 42 years.

Survivors include his wife, Marilyn (Neff) Leavelle Robbins of Wilkinson; two sons, Robin (wife Sandy) Robbins of Indianapolis and Randi Robbins of Zionsville; two daughters, Lorrie (husband Doug) Rogerson of Plaquemine, La. and Tamara (husband Frank) Safranek of Peru; two stepsons, Steve (wife Cheryl) Leavelle of Decatur, Ala. and Kenneth (wife Cindy) Leavelle of Elgin, Ill.; a brother, Charles “Chick” Robbins of Rosedale; three sisters, Ruth Wiley, Shirley Lawrence and Ruby Barr, all of Brazil; nine grandchildren; one great-grandson; three step-grandchildren; and a step-great-granddaughter.

His first wife, Charlene Robbins, four brothers, William, Robert, Tom and Marion “Skip” Robbins and two sisters, Betty Wallace and Doris Brown preceded him in death.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday, Dec. 10 in the Wilkinson Church of Christ in Wilkinson with Wayne Patton, Russ Lutes and Ron Baker officiating. Graveside services will be held Saturday at 11 a.m. at the Lincoln Memory Gardens Cemetery in Zionsville.

Friends may call at the Condo & Son Funeral Home in Wilkinson from 3-8 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 9.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Wilkinson Church of Christ Building Fund.
