Ruberta A. Hummel, 88, a resident of New Castle, died Sunday, October 17 in Henry County Memorial Hospital. She was born January 7, 1916 in Henry County, a daughter of the late Howard and Blanch (Boyle) Kendall.
Mrs. Hummel had worked for Brammer Furniture Store in New Castle for over 30 years. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church in New Castle and the Shirley Order of the Eastern Star #492.
Surviving are two stepdaughters, Linda Stoots of Strasburg, Penn. and Janet (husband Tony) Vaccaro of Kennard; a brother, Ralph Kendall of Anderson; six nieces and nephews, Sandy (husband Kelly) Kellams of Anderson, Karen (husband Phil) Hinchman of Greenfield, Connie (husband Rich) Kellams of Anderson, Karen (husband Phil) Hinchman of Greenfield, Connie (husband Rich) Hoy of Greenfield, Donna (husband Mike) Goff of Indianapolis, Lori (husband Lee) Lutes of Florida and Steve (friend Rhonda) Kendall of Greenfield; and three step-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her first husband, Carrol Kriner; second husband, Homer Hummel; two sisters, Lois Hummel and Rowena Koon; and one step-grandson.
Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday, October 21 in the Condo & Son Funeral Home in Wilkinson with Rev. Joe Wyatt officiating. Burial will follow at Glen Cove Cemetery in Knightstown.
Friends may call at the funeral home from 4-8 p.m. today (Wednesday, October 20) with an Eastern Star service at 7:30 p.m.
Memorial contributions may be made to the First United Methodist Church of New Castle or the First Aid Unit.

Frances M. Riggs

Frances M. Riggs, 84, a resident of Shirley, died Saturday, October 23 at her residence. She was born September 4, 1920 in Hancock County, a daughter of the late Paul and Jessie (Edwards) Masters.
Mrs. Riggs had worked 30 years for General Motors and was a lifelong homemaker.
Survivors include three daughters, Major Marilyn Riggs of Columbus, Patti (husband David) Hunt of Fortville and Debbie Riggs of Shirley; one son, Mike (wife Monta) Riggs of Knightstown; four grandchildren, Bryan Hunt, Richard Hunt, Jeff Riggs and Jenny Riggs; two great-grandchildren, Dylan Hunt and Zoe Riggs; several nieces and nephews; and special friends, Major Margaret Hill and Rose Ann Adkins.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Fred Riggs, in 1996.
Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. today (Wednesday, October 27) in the Condo & Son Funeral Home in Wilkinson with Rev. Jim Jackson officiating. Burial will follow at Mechanicsburg Cemetery in Mechanicsburg.
Visitation was held at the funeral home Tuesday, October 26.

Thelma Neal

Thelma Neal, 81, a resident of Knightstown, died Tuesday, October 19 at Brandywine Manor Nursing Home in Greenfield. She was born February 2, 1923 in Kentucky, a daughter of the late Jesse and Gracie (Plank) Egan.
Mrs. Neal retired from Western Electric. She was a member of the Church of God in Knightstown.
Survivors include her husband, Robert Neal of Knightstown; one son, Robert (wife Pamela) Neal of Knightstown; one daughter, Debby (husband Bob) Monger of Knightstown; three granddaughters, Jackie Gabbard of Dublin, Camille Lukens of Knightstown and Ashley Souder of Knightstown; two grandsons, Scott Neal of Knightstown and Tyler Sharp of Indianapolis; eight great-grandchildren; two brothers, Elmer Eagan of Eaton, Ohio and Leo Eagan of Grant City; two sisters, Vesta Hunt of Ocala, Fla. and Edna Dyer of Albany, Ky.; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held Friday, October 22 in the Condo & Son Funeral Home in Wilkinson. Burial was in Glen Cove Cemetery in Knightstown.
Visitation was held prior to the service on Friday at the funeral home.
Elsie Marie Roland
Mar. 14, 1919 – Oct. 19, 2004
Knightstown resident, Elise Marie Roland, 85, died Tuesday, October 19 at Regency Place Nursing Home in Greenfield. She was born March 14, 1919 in Cromwell, Minn., a daughter of the late Herman and Signey Carlson.
Mrs. Roland had lived most of her life in Knightstown. She had worked as an assembly worker at Delco Remy in Anderson. On March 13, 1936, she married Joseph Roland and he survives.
Other survivors include a son, Jerry Roland of Knightstown; a brother, Lynn Carlson of Indianapolis; two sisters, Millie Carlson of Florida and Vera Davis of Indianapolis; two grandchildren and two great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
A son, one brother and three sisters preceded her in death.
Funeral services were held Saturday, October 23 at the Todd Funeral Home, Butcher Chapel in Knightstown with Rev. Mervin Kilmer officiating. Burial was in Glen Cove Cemetery, Knightstown.
Visitation was held at the funeral home Friday, October 22.
Clyda Ann Queener Shafer
Nov. 7, 1912 – Oct. 19, 2004
Clyda Ann Queener Shafer, 91, of New Castle, died Tuesday, October 19 at Heritage House of New Castle following a brief illness. She was born November 7, 1912 in Nevelsville, Ky., a daughter of the late Marion and Molly (Casada) New.
A longtime area resident, she retired from Modernfold Industries. She was a member of First Baptist Church in New Castle and the Ithia Sunday School Class. She had been an avid golfer.
Survivors include a son, Duane (wife Peggie) Queener of Knightstown; three grandchildren, Allison (husband Stephen) Polchek of Springfield, Va., Julia (husband Brady) Wells of Scottsburg, and Dana (husband George) Shindler of Fairfax, Va.; eight grand-grandchildren; two step-children, Jan Winningham of New Castle and Keith Shafer of Indianapolis; one brother, Ray (wife Bonnie) New of Anderson; several nieces and nephews; and a special friend, Barbara Hill of New Castle.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her first husband, Dennis Queener; her second husband, Russell Shafer; two brothers, Clarence and Everett New; and two grandchildren, Mark Duane and Lauren Kay Queener.
Services were held Friday, October 22 at Hinsey-Brown Funeral Service with the Rev. Dan Yeager officiating. Burial was in South Mound Cemetery.
Memorial contributions may be given to the Henry County Community Foundation Class of 1953 Named Fund, First Baptist Church Building Fund or Alzheimer’s Association.
Jean K. Ulrey
Jan. 2, 1924 – Oct. 22, 2004
Shirley resident, Jean K. Ulrey, 80, died Friday, October 22 at the Hancock Memorial Hospital in Greenfield. A daughter of the late Russell and Grace Bowman Kirkpatrick, Jean was born January 2, 1924 in the same house in which she resided.
Mrs. Ulrey graduated from the Kennard High School with the class of 1942 and attended Ball State University. Jean retired from Delco Remy after 34 years of service in the Cost Dept.
Survivors include one son, Edward D. Ulrey of Shirley; a daughter, Rebecca (husband William) D’Amico of Kokomo; one granddaughter, Carmen D’Amico; and one sister, Jane (husband Floyd) Painter of Springport.
On October 12, 1945, she married Dean R. Ulrey in New Castle and he preceded her in death on September 19, 1998.
Funeral services were held Monday, October 25 at the Marshall & Erlewein Funeral Home, Estell Chapel, Shirley with Jim Jackson of the Shirley Friends Church officiating. Burial was in the McCray Cemetery at Wilkinson.
Visitation was held at the funeral home Sunday, October 24.
Lawrence Richard Harris
Feb. 18, 1936 – Oct. 21, 2004
Lawrence Richard Harris, 68, of Shirley, died Thursday, October 21 at Sugar Creek Nursing and Rehab in Greenfield. He was born February 18, 1936 in Carter County, Ky., a son of the late Morgan and Mae (Barton) Harris.
Mr. Harris worked at Nichelson File in Anderson and Chrysler Corp. He enjoyed cars and gardening.
Survivors include one brother, Darris Harris of Muncie, two daughters, Nikki (husband Ron) Isenhart and Jamie (husband William) Orr; three grandchildren; one great-grandchild; several aunts and uncles; three sisters-in-law, Jeanette (husband Carlo) Hooker, Jo Buckley and Sarah (husband John) McIntosh; and two brothers-in-law, Ned (wife Susie) Wilson and Gene (wife Lavada) Wilson.
In addition to his parents, his wife, Vickie Wilson Harris, preceded him in death in 2003.
Graveside services were held Monday, October 25 at Glen Cove Cemetery with Rev. James Jackson officiating.
Visitation was held prior to the service at Hinsey-Brown Funeral Service Knightstown Chapel.
