Norman D. Smith

Norman D. Smith, 81, a resident of Spiceland, died Saturday, October 2 at his residence following an extended illness. He was born September 28, 1923 in Guntertown, Tenn., a son of the late Sam and Rosa Bell (Chisolm) Smith.
Mr. Smith had lived in Spiceland for 24 years and was a former resident of Mays for 26 years. He had worked as a painter, retiring from Local 47 in Indianapolis. He was a member of the Local 47 International Brotherhood Painters Union and was a former member of the Jonesboro American Legion. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army where he served as a surgical technician with the 101st Airbourne in Bastogne, Belgium.
Survivors include his wife of 60 years, Leah (Harmon) Smith, whom he married August 26, 1944; a son, Mikel (wife Regina) Smith of Gas City; two grandsons, Dennis (wife Shellie) Smith and Erik (wife Lori) Smith, both of Gas City; a great-grandson, Garrison; two great-granddaughters, Sophia and Lauren; one brother, Cassel Smith; and several nieces and nephews.
Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by a son, Mitchell Smith; a sister, Maudie Lee; and seven brothers, William, Arlie, Hassel, Willard, Coy, Claude and Wrathmel Smith.
Services will be held at 1 p.m. today (Wednesday, October 6) at Hinsey-Brown Funeral Service in New Castle with Rev. Gene Bennett officiating. Burial will follow in Circle Grove Cemetery in Spiceland where the American Legion and the VFW will conduct military rites.
Visitation was held at the funeral home Tuesday, October 5.
Memorial contributions may be given to the Henry County Memorial Hospital Hospice with envelopes available at the funeral home.
Robert A. Jackson
Dec. 16, 1934 – Oct. 10, 2004
Robert A. Jackson, 69, of Carthage died Sunday, October 10 in Henry County Memorial Hospital following an extended illness. He was born December 16, 1934 in Carthage, a son of the late Trees and Iva (McCorkle) Jackson.
Mr. Jackson retired from Delco Remy in Anderson in 1986 after 31 years of service. He was a member of the UAW Local # 662. He was also a member of the New Providence Church of the Nazarene in Antioch, Ala. He loved to hunt and fish and was an avid woodworker.
Survivors include four children: Steve (wife Sandra) Jackson of Carthage, Debra Jackson of Indianapolis, Treesa (husband Keith) Jarvis of Knightstown and James (wife Cherri) Jackson of New Castle; seven grandchildren, Steven (wife Amy) Jackson of Knightstown, Melissa Strother (companion Alan Jarvis) of Springport, Jacob Jackson of Carthage, David Jackson of Carthage, Angela (husband Bryce) Braddy of Middletown, Amber Jarvis of Muncie and Caleb Jackson of New Castle; six great-grandchildren, Christian Strother, Hunter Jackson, Kinsey Graddy, Katelyn Graddy, Karly Graddy and Kameron Graddy; three step-children, Lonnie Merritt, Mark Merritt and Cindy Murphy; a brother, Trees “Jack” (wife Annetta) Jackson of Fremont; four nieces and one nephew.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Ruby Mae (Goble) Jackson in 2003 and a brother, James Daniel Jackson.
Services will be at 11 a.m. today (Wednesday, October 13) at Hinsey-Brown Funeral Service Knightstown Chapel with Rev. Gene Bennett officiating. Burial will follow in Carthage Cemetery.
Visitation was held at the funeral home Tuesday, October 12.
Memorial contributions may be given to the American Heart Association.
Alice Cox
Dec. 9, 1916 – Oct. 6, 2004
Alice Cox, 87, of Knightstown died Wednesday, October 6 following an extended illness. She was born December 9, 1916 in Morehead, Ky., a daughter of the late John and Letha (Conn) Black.
Mrs. Cox and her husband pastored Knightstown Church of God for over 50 years where she was pianist and Worship & Praise leader.
Survivors include two daughters, Darlene and Dolly Cox, both of Knightstown; three granddaughters, Cindy Jordan of Florida, Terri Egan of Indianapolis and Michelle (husband Miles) Roberts of North Carolina; and four great-grandsons, John Edwards of Virginia, Jared Edwards of North Carolina, and Matthew and Michael Wilson, both of Indianapolis.
Her husband, Rev. Cleo Cox, preceded her in death in 1990.
Services were held Saturday, October 9 at Hinsey-Brown Funeral Service, Knightstown Chapel with Pastor Randy Gross officiating. Burial was in Glen Cove Cemetery.
Visitation was held at the funeral home prior to the funeral services on Saturday.
Memorial contributions may be given to Faith Chapel in Knightstown.
Darlene M. Muir
Dec. 14, 1924 – Oct. 8, 2004
Lifelong Carthage resident, Darlene M. Muir, 79, died Friday, October 8 in Brandywine Nursing Home in Greenfield. She was born December 14, 1924 in Carthage, a daughter of the late Maine and Edith (Brooks) Magee.
Mrs. Muir was a housewife. She married Raymond Muir October 31, 1942 and he preceded her in death March 11, 1990.
Survivors include two sons, Bill (wife Judy) Muir of Carthage and Tom (wife Nancy) Muir of Carthage; one daughter, Linda Horine of Carthage; two brothers, Fred Magee of Indianapolis and Richard Magee of Rushville; three sisters, Gerry Magee Strong of New Castle, Gloria (husband Lyle) Plank of Greenfield, and Lou Magee of Logansport; nine grandchildren and 11 great-great-grandchildren.
Besides her husband, one daughter, two brothers and one sister preceded her in death.
Services were held Monday, October 11 at Todd Funeral Home Carthage Chapel with Rev. David Bonne officiating. Burial was in Carthage Town Cemetery.
Visitation was held at the funeral home Sunday, October 10.
Patrica Sanders
Dec. 1, 1938 – Oct. 5, 2004
Patrica Sanders, 65, of Carthage died Tuesday, October 5 in Regency Place Nursing Home in Greenfield. She was born December 1, 1938 in New Salem, a daughter of the late George and Mary (Nichols) Stevens.
Mrs. Sanders had lived in Carthage most of her life. She was a cook and a member of the Rushville VFW Ladies Auxiliary.
On August 19, 1972, she married James B. Sanders and he survives. Other survivors include four sons, Robert Stevens of Knightstown, Michael Williams of Clearwater, Fla., Allen Sanders of Indianapolis and James E. Sanders of Greenfield; one brother, George Stevens of Huntsville; two sisters, Peggy Thomas of Richmond, Ky., and Evelan Helms of Pendleton; eight grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
One son and one daughter preceded her in death.
Services were held Friday, October 8 at Todd Funeral Home Carthage Chapel with Pastor Roger Campbell officiating. Burial was in the Carthage Town Cemetery.

Pauline Lewis-Sayer
July 10, 1926 – Sept. 1, 2004
Pauline Lewis-Sayer, 78, of Vero Beach, Fla. died Wednesday, September 1 at her home in Vero Beach. She was born July 10, 1926 in Carthage, a daughter of the late Janice and Perry Lewis of Knightstown.
Mrs. Sayer was a long time Florida resident who worked in the airline, automobile and retail industries. She was a member of the Elks Lodge in Port Orange, Fla. and attended Westminster Presbyterian Church in Vero Beach. Mrs. Sayer graduated from Knightstown High School in 1944.
Survivors include two daughters, Susan (husband Jeffrey) Feno of New Castle and Jane Remington of Ft. Pierce, Fla.; three grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 45 years, James W. Sayer; and an infant brother.
Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society, 3375 20th St., Vero Beach, FL 32960.
Cremation arrangements were under the direction of Indian River Cremation Inc. in Vero Beach.

Evelyn Cain O’Neal

Evelyn Cain O’Neal, 97, a former resident of Shirley, died Thursday, October 14 at Community Northview Care Center in Anderson. She was born March 2, 1907 in Spencer, a daughter of the late Oliver and Louise (Taylor) Cain.
Mrs. O’Neal retired from Delco-Remy of Anderson after 30 years of service. She was a member of the Valley Grove Church of The Brethren in Fortville.
Survivors include one daughter, Christi (husband Larry) Boze of Anderson; three granddaughters, Pamela (husband Kenny) Young of Noblesville, Cathy O’Neal of Anderson and Michele (husband Roger) Wilkins of Anderson; seven grandsons, Eugene Giles of Anderson, Jim O’Neal of Anderson, Billy Giles of Shelbyville, Rick O’Neal of Elwood, Bill O’Neal of Anderson, Howard O’Neal of Anderson and Tony Boze of Noblesville; 10 great-grandchildren; two great-great-granddaughters; several nieces and nephews and special friends, Don and Kris Holland of Anderson.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Roscoe S. O’Neal in 1962, two sons, Bill O’Neal in 1976 and Trevor O’Neal in 1995 and a daughter, Patricia Giles in 1997.
Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. today (Wednesday, October 20) in the Condo & Son Funeral Home in Wilkinson with Guy Studebaker officiating. Burial will follow at McCray Cemetery in Wilkinson.
Visitation was held at the funeral home Tuesday, October 19.
