Indiana Marriages, 1780-1992

Vester Jackson

Dec. 24, 1925 – Sept. 4, 2004

Vester “Vet” Jackson, 78, a resident of Knightstown, died Saturday, September 4 in Hancock Memorial Hospital, Greenfield. He was born December 24, 1925 in Fleming County, Ky., the son of the late William and Allie (Craft) Jackson.

Mr. Jackson retired in 1988 from the Chrysler Plant in Indianapolis. He was a World War II U.S. Navy veteran serving aboard the USS Teton and was a member of the AGC Flagship Alliance. He was also a member of the Knightstown American Legion Post 152, the VFW and a past member of the Charles A. Beard School Board in Knightstown.

He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Shirley (Coffin) Jackson of Knightstown; two daughters, Jill Wales of Wilkinson and Julie Jackson of Knightstown; daughter-in-law, Chris Jackson of New Castle; two grandsons, Matt Wales of Washington, D.C. and Brad Wales of Bloomington; two granddaughters, Courtney Wales of Lafayette and Jody Smith of Louisville, Ky.; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by a son, Harold Jackson in 1995, his parents and several brothers and sisters.

Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. today (Wednesday, September 8) in the Condo & Son Funeral Home in Wilkinson with Rev. Jeff Mair officiating. Burial will follow at Glen Cove Cemetery in Knightstown with military graveside rites.

Visitation was held at the funeral home Tuesday, September 7.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Hancock Memorial Hospital Better Breathers.

Julie Logan

March 15, 1932 – Sept. 1, 2004

Julie Logan, 72, of Knightstown died unexpectedly Wednesday, September 1 in Rush Memorial Hospital at Rushville. She was born March 15, 1932 in Fleming County, Ky., a daughter of the late Mack and Myrtle (Howard) Butler.

Mrs. Logan retired from Brandywine Nursing Home in Greenfield in 2000 after 20 years of service. She loved spending time in Kentucky at the family cabin.

Survivors include her husband, whom she married November 28, 1951, Clayton Logan of Knightstown; three daughters, Brenda Hager, Tina Logan and Jodie (husband Joey) Crosby, all of Greenfield; 12 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; three sisters, Christine (husband Orville) Dyer and Helen (husband Ray) Richmond, both of Vanceburg, Ky., and Edith (husband Rodney) Rittenhour of Osceola, Ohio; two brothers, Raymond (wife Rosemary) Butler of Vanceburg, Ky. and Charles (wife Angie) Butler of Cambridge City; and several nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.

In addition to her parents, a daughter, Rita Back and two sisters, Lottie Dyer and Kathleen Faulkner preceded her in death.

Services were held Saturday, September 4 at Hinsey-Brown Funeral Service, Knightstown Chapel with Rev. Gene Bennett officiating. Burial was in Glen Cove Cemetery.

Visitation was held at the funeral home Friday, September 3.

Memorial contributions may be given to the Raleigh EMS.

Beulah Mae Whitfield

Jan. 27, 1907 – Aug. 24, 2004

Beulah Mae Whitfield, 97, of Flemingsburg, Ky., died Tuesday, August 24 at her residence. She was born in Hancock County, Ind. on January 27, 1907, a daughter of the late Perry F. and Lorena Sosbe Brooks.

Mrs. Whitfield was a former resident of the Carthage area.

Surviving are four daughters, Rose (husband Gilbert) McCoy of Wallingford, Ky., Yvonne (husband Rudy) Mach of Bartow, Fla., Charlene Jones of Cicero, Ill. and Wanda (husband Raymond) Gulley of Charlottesville; two sons, Duwayne (wife Delight) Whitfield of Abbeville, S.C. and Richard (wife Eileen) Whitfield of Lakeland, Fla.; 34 grandchildren; 53 great-grandchildren; 21 great-great-grandchildren; one sister, Louise Carter of Colorado Springs, Colo.; and one brother, Ted (wife Norma) Brooks of Ft. Myers, Fla.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Clarence Whitfield who died August 13, 1957; two sons; two daughters; four sisters; one brother; and four grandchildren.

Services were held Friday, August 27 in Boone-Nickell Funeral Home at Flemingsburg with the Rev. Cecil Ison and the Rev. Willis Adkins officiating. Burial took place Monday, August 30 in Lee Memorial Park, Lehigh Acres, Fort Myers, Fla.

Visitation was held at the funeral home Thursday, August 26.

Joan Bailey

May 30, 1934 – Sept. 4, 2004

Knightstown resident, Joan Bailey, 70, died Saturday, September 4 in Hancock Memorial Hospital following an extended illness. She was born May 30, 1934 in Tompkinsville, Ky., a daughter of the late Billy and Vassie (Sprowls) Anderson.

Joan attended Indiana University and was a hairdresser in Indianapolis for many years. She was employed at Eli Lilly for several years, retiring in 1995. She was a member of the Eastern Star of Indianapolis and president of the art classes at Eli Lilly. She was an avid artist, seamstress and golfer.

Survivors include a daughter, Lenee (husband Daniel) Salmon of Virginia; four grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; three sisters, Martha Bow and Jessie Appollus, both of Indianapolis and Betty (husband Lauren) Arnold of Knightstown; a brother, David (wife Tena) Anderson of Cocoa, Fla.; and several nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents, a son, Donovon “Bobby” Bailey, preceded her in death.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday, September 9 at Hinsey-Brown Funeral Service, Knightstown Chapel with the Rev. Hugh W. Severance officiating. Burial will be in Glen Cove Cemetery.

Friends may call from 4-8 p.m. today (Wednesday, September 8) at the funeral home.

Richard E. Boswell

Sept. 19, 1935 – Sept. 13, 2004

Charlottesville resident Richard E. Boswell, 68, died September 13 at Community East Hospital in Indianapolis. He was born September 19, 1935 in Seymour in Jackson County, a son of the late Charles and Nellie (Ray) Boswell.

Mr. Boswell worked as a security officer for General Motors. He was a member of the Nameless Creek Christian Church and was an avid sports fan, family man and gardener.

He is survived by his wife of 25 years, Barbara (Peay) Boswell of Charlottesville; one stepdaughter, Amanda (husband Joseph) Sitler of New Palestine; two stepsons, Jeffrey (wife Theresa) Vickers of Wilkinson and Steven (wife Jill) Vickers of Noblesville; eight step-grandchildren; one brother, Charles Boswell of Boling Brook, Ill.; one sister, Kathryn Albaugh of Shoals; a sister-in-law, Lois Boswell of Indianapolis; and several nieces and nephews.

A brother, Kenneth Boswell and a sister, Nina Boswell, preceded him in death.

Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. on Friday, September 17 in the Condo & Son Funeral Home in Wilkinson with Jim Carcia officiating. Burial will follow at Glen Cove Cemetery in Knightstown.

Friends may call at the funeral home from 4-8 p.m. Thursday, September 16.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart Association.

Tarri Ann Fleming

Feb. 4, 1980 – Sept. 24, 2004

Greenfield resident, Tarri Ann Fleming, 44, died Friday, September 24. She was born February 4, 1960 in Indianapolis, a daughter of Eldon and Susie Lightle of Charlottesville.

Tarri had worked for Indianapolis Power and Light Co. for seven years. She graduated from Knightstown High School in 1978.

Besides her parents, she is survived by her husband Jay B. Fleming of Greenfield; one daughter, Traci Miller of Knightstown; one grandson, Lucas Jason Miller; three sisters, Tammi (husband Kevin) Roland of Knightstown, Tina (husband Tom) Smith of Indianapolis, and T.J. Lightle of Charlottesville.

She was preceded in death by a son, Jason Miller.

Funeral services were held Tuesday, September 28 at Shirley Brothers Washington Memorial Chapel in Indianapolis.

Visitation was held at the funeral home on Monday, September 27.

Denver E. Tipton

April 9, 1921 – Sept. 24, 2004

Denver E. Tipton, 83, of Knightstown died Friday, September 24 at his home following a brief illness. He was born April 9, 1921 in Morehead, Ky., a son of the late Henry and Anna (Johnson) Tipton.

Mr. Tipton farmed in the Carthage and Knightstown area most of his life. He enjoyed watching I.U. and Pacer basketball games. He was a crossing guard at Knightstown School for several years and enjoyed hunting and fishing.

Survivors include two children, Phyllis A. (husband Ralph) Newkirk of Knightstown and Jack (wife Pat) Tipton of Greenfield; seven grandchildren, Shari (husband Mark) Campbell of Newburgh, Lori (husband Mark) Gregory of Knightstown, Wendy (husband Steve) Fox of Carthage, Chris Chapple of Indianapolis, Brian Chapple of Knightstown, Melissa (husband Bruce) Brown of Knightstown and Kelly (husband John) Jones of Knightstown; 10 great-grandchildren; one sister, Vena Roland of Greenfield; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Jean Tipton, in 1993; a daughter, Pat Chapple; and three sisters, Ethel Hill, Telitha Kirk and Imogene Jackson.

Services were held Tuesday, September 28 at Hinsey-Brown Funeral Service, Knightstown Chapel with the Rev. Bill Smith officiating. Burial was in Glen Cove Cemetery.

Visitation was held at the funeral home Monday. Memorial contributions may be given to the Hancock Memorial Hospital Hospice.
