Billy Joe Brock

Dec. 13, 1932 – July 19, 2004

Greenfield resident, Billy Joe Brock, 71, died Monday, July 19 at his home in Greenfield. He was born December 13, 1932 in Curtsville, W.V., a son of the late Price and Dollie (Boyer) Brock.

Mr. Brock graduated from Pax High School in Pax, W.V. in 1950 and served as a sergeant in the U.S. Army from 1951-1954. He was an operator for Coastal Gas Co. in Greenfield before retiring in December 1989. He was a member of and had served on the Board of Directors of the Greenfield Conservation Club; a member of Knightstown United Methodist Church; past Commander (1972-1973) of the American Legion Post 119 in Greenfield; and past member of 40 & 8 in Greenfield.

Surviving him are his wife, Carolyn (Deweese) Brock of Greenfield, whom he married January 19, 1980; one daughter, Anita (husband Ron) Williams of Knightstown; four brothers, Jimmie Lee Brock and Larry Dan Brock, both of Gainesville, Ga., Bobbie Dale Brock of Monroe, N.C. and Jerry Alan Brock of Grayson, Ky.; step-son, Billy (wife Sara) Parnell of Martinsville; step-daughters, Tamara (husband Chuck) Austin of Paragon and Theresa (husband Jay) Smale of Greenwood; two grandchildren, Ryan Porter and Rayann Forbes; five great-grandchildren; eight step-grandchildren; and six step-great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, July 23 at Erlewein Mortuary in Greenfield with Rev. Steve Brackney officiating. Burial will be in Park Cemetery, Greenfield.

Visitation will be held from 4-8 p.m. Thursday, July 22 at Erlewein Mortuary, 1484 W U.S. 40, Greenfield.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Mesothelioma Applied Research Foundation, 1609 Garden St., Santa Barbara, CA 93101.

Charles E. Haznedl Sr.

Feb. 25, 1920 – July 19, 2004

Charles E. Haznedl Sr., 84, of Greenfield, died Monday, July 19. He was born February 25, 1920 in Chicago, Ill., a son of the late Charles and Pauline (Pospisil) Haznedl.

Charles worked for Eastman Kodak Co. for 45 years, retiring in 1983. He was a photographer for the Army Air Corps and served in WWII. He was a member of Better Breathers Group.

He is survived by his wife, Peggy Haznedl; children, Charles E. Haznedl Jr. of California, Peggy J. Hines of Greenfield and David N. Haznedl of Florida; three brothers, Clarence Haznedl of Illinois, Raymond Haznedl of Florida and Frank Thrams of Illinois; six grandchildren, Charles III, Terri, David, Sara, Jake and Joel.

Services will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, July 24 at Flanner & Buchanan Funeral Center, Washington Park East, Indianapolis. Burial will be at Washington Park East Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 4-9 p.m. Friday, July 23 at the funeral home.

Endie Pitts

Nov. 27, 1909 – July 28, 2004

Endie Pitts, 94, died Wednesday, July 28 at her home in Raysville. She was born November 27, 1909 in Muse Mills, Ky., a daughter of Thomas Morrison and Laura (Hamm) Morrison.

Mrs. Pitts had lived in the Knightstown area for 75 years. She was a homemaker who was completely devoted to her family. She had worked several years at the Dunreith Canning Factory. She was a member of the Knightstown Church of God for 47 years and the last 12 years at Cross Road Church of God in New Castle. She married Allie Pitts on August 16, 1924 and he preceded her in death on November 4, 1981.

Survivors include five sons, Eugene (wife Mary) Pitts of Carthage, Richard Pitts of Knightstown, Harold (wife Carolyn) Pitts of Knightstown, Leonard (wife Jo Ellen) Pitts of Dunreith, and Dale (wife Jackie) Pitts of Rushville; four daughters, Jewell (husband Selbert) Braden of Anderson, Betty Kise of Knightstown, Judy (husband Henry) Neal of New Castle, Mildred (husband Larry) Houser of New Castle; two brothers, Walter Morrison of Worthington, Ky. and Archie Morrison of Cleveland, Ohio; four sisters, Alice Lemmings and Elsie Marcum, both of Flatwoods, Ky., Cora Coons of Cleveland, Ohio and Arsula Truitt of Kokomo; 25 grandchildren, 29 step-grandchildren, 54 great-grandchildren, 34 step-great-grandchildren, 22 great-great-grandchildren and six step-great-great-grandchildren.

Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by eight grandchildren, two step-grandchildren, two great-great-grandchildren, two brothers and one sister.

Services were held Saturday, July 31 at Cross Road Church of God in New Castle with Danny Douglas and Rev. Charles Dugger officiating. Burial was in Glen Cove Cemetery.

Visitation was held at the Todd Funeral Home in Knightstown Friday, July 30.

Memorial contributions may be made to Cross Road Church of God in New Castle and Henry County Memorial Hospital Hospice.

Electia Stevens Rains

Jan. 22, 1909 – July 30, 2004

Lewisville resident Electia Stevens Rains, 95, died Friday, July 30 at the Henry County Memorial Hospital in New Castle. She was born January 22, 1909 in Alpha, Ky., a daughter of the late Zeak and Martha Guffey Smith.

A homemaker, she lived most of her life in Henry County and the past 60 years in the Lewisville community. She was a member of the Little Blue River Church of Christ in Carthage and a former member of the Rainbow Garden Club at New Castle.

Survivors include two daughters, Evelyn (husband Gene) Hall of New Castle and Shirlee (husband Charles) Newton of Greenfield; three sons, Everett “Shady” Stevens and Roger Stevens, both of Lewisville and Donald (wife Betty) Stevens of Spiceland; 14 grandchildren, 23 great-grandchildren, two great-great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews.

Preceding her in death were two husbands, Estell Stevens and Tom Rains; one son, Phillip Stevens; one daughter, Berniece Hash; one grandson, Timothy Hughes; two sisters, Adell Jones and Greedle Pierce; and two brothers, Leonard and Everett Smith.

Funeral services were held Monday, August 2 at the Marshall & Erlewein Funeral Home ~ Lewisville Chapel ~ Lewisville with John Skomp officiating. Burial was in South Mound Cemetery in New Castle.

Visitation was held at the funeral home Sunday, August 1.

Margaret Roberts

Aug. 22, 1932 – July 23, 2004

Margaret Esther Roberts, 71, died Friday, July 23 at Flat Rock River Lodge in Rushville. She was born August 22, 1932 in Rush County, a daughter of the late Alva and Hazel (Montgomery) Roberts.

Miss Roberts had lived in Knightstown and was a domestic worker.

She is survived by two brothers, James (Rusty) Roberts of Knightstown and Tom (wife Sharon) Roberts of Carthage; four sisters, Marjorie Clay of Carthage, Virginia (husband Kenneth) Stearns, Dorothy (husband Larry) VanDuyn and Donna Roberts, all of Knightstown; and several nieces and nephews.

Besides her parents, one sister preceded her in death.

Services were held Tuesday, July 27 at Todd Funeral Home, Butcher Chapel, with Pastor Steve Brackney officiating. Burial was in Glen Cove Cemetery at Knightstown.

Visitation was held prior to the service on Tuesday.

Richard E. Merchant

July 2, 1924 – Aug. 8, 2004

Knightstown resident, Richard E. Merchant, 80, died Sunday, August 8 in the Americare Living Center, New Castle. He was born July 2, 1924 in Greenfield, a son of the late James and Iva (Williams) Merchant.

Merchant had lived in Knightstown all his life. He retired from Chrysler as a job setter. The WW II veteran was a machinist’s mate third class USNR. He was a member of Knightstown American Legion Post 152, member of VFW and the Moose Lodge of Greenfield. He married Pauline “Polly” Merchant November 20, 1954 and she preceded him in death September 16, 2000.

Survivors include two sons, Mike Merchant of Knightstown and Donald Merchant of Markleville; one brother, Lewis (wife Evelyn) Merchant of Knightstown; two grandsons, Mike and Ron Merchant; one granddaughter, Amy (husband Phil) Thompson.

Besides his wife and parents, two brothers preceded him in death.

Services will be held at 10 a.m. today (Wednesday, August 11) at the Todd Funeral Home, Butcher Chapel in Knightstown with Pastor Steve Brackney officiating. Burial will be in Glen Cove Cemetery with graveside military rites by the Knightstown American Legion-VFW.

Visitation was held at the funeral home Tuesday, August 10.

Lola Conrad

Aug. 22, 1917 – Aug. 8, 2004

Lola Renfro Miller Conrad, 86, of Dunreith, died Sunday, August 8 at The Waters of New Castle following an extended illness. She was born August 22, 1917 in Rush County, a daughter of the late Silas and Alice (Nolen) Renfro.

A high school graduate, Mrs. Conrad had been employed at Montgomery Ward. She was a member of Dunreith Christian Church since 1946 and a former member of the YMCA. She enjoyed crocheting, crafts and shopping.

Survivors include a sister, Betty (husband Ted) Applegate of Spiceland; a brother, Franklin (wife Maxine) Renfro of Kennard; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her first husband, Harry E. Miller; her second husband, Clarence Eli Conrad; a brother, George Renfro; three sisters, Bertha Stearns, Minnie Clapp and Geneva Dean.

Services will be held at 10 a.m. today (Wednesday, August 11) at Hinsey-Brown Funeral Service in New Castle with Rev. Kenton Smith officiating. Burial will be in Glen Cove Cemetery, Knightstown.

Visitation was held at the funeral home Tuesday, August 10.
