Nellie Opal McKinley

Nellie Opal (Rice) McKinley, 87, a resident of Greenfield, died Wednesday, January 14 at her residence. She was born October 25, 1916 in Maysville, Ky., a daughter of the late Mary Jane Rice.
Mrs. McKinley was a homemaker.
She is survived by one son, Fred (wife Marsha) McKinley of Greenfield; eight grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; one brother, Carl Rice of Indianapolis; and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Arthur McKinley in 2003; one son, Gene McKinley; two brothers, Curtis Rice and Alvin Rice; and two sisters, Nora Delawter and Birchy Cronk.
Funeral services were held Tuesday, January 20 at Condo & Son Funeral Home with Melvin Mozingo and Ralph Kirkland officiating. Burial was in Glen Cove Cemetery in Knightstown.
Visitation was held at the funeral home Monday, January 19.
Lovel Stacey Howard
Feb. 10, 1919 – Jan. 19, 2004
Lovel Stacey Howard, 85 of Dunreith, died Monday, January 19 at St. Francis Hospital in Beech Grove. She was born February 10, 1919 in Musees Millies, Ky., a daughter of the late Issac and Ethel (Stacey) Stacey.
Mrs. Stacey lived most of her life in the Dunreith area. The homemaker was a member of Faith Chapel in Knightstown. On October 28, 1978, she married Earl B. Howard who preceded her in death December 29, 2000.
Survivors include one son, Lloyd Stalcup of Maryland; two daughters, Darlene (husband Marvin) Mullenix of Indianapolis, and Sharon K. Cox of New Castle; nine grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.
Besides her husband, one daughter, one brother and one grandchild preceded her in death.
Services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, January 22 at Faith Chapel with Rev. Randy Gross and Rev. Charles Miller officiating. Burial will be in Glen Cove Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 4-8 p.m. today (Wednesday, January 21) at Todd Funeral Home, Knightstown.
Josephine Gray
Nov. 5, 1907 – Jan. 17, 2004
Josephine Gray, 96, of Rushville died Saturday, January 17 in Rush Memorial Hospital. She was born November 5, 1907 in Kentucky, a daughter of Samuel Traylor and Emma Alice McCarty.
Mrs. Gray married Cecil Albert Gray December 11, 1933 and he preceded her in death August 10, 1982. She was a member of the Fletcher United Methodist Church of Carthage and United Methodist Women.
Survivors include one son, Sam (wife Mary Lou) Gray of Carthage; one daughter, Millie Alice (husband Donald) Cooper of Scottsburg; 12 grandchildren and 31 great-grandchildren.
She was also preceded in death by two sons, four brothers, six sisters and one grandchild.
Funeral services were held Wednesday, January 21 at the Fletcher United Methodist Church of Carthage with Pastor Roger Campbell officiating. Burial was in Riverside Cemetery in Carthage.
Visitation was held Tuesday, January 20 at Todd Funeral Home, Carthage Chapel.
Frances G. Pyles
Aug. 19, 1914 – Jan. 16, 2004
Frances G. Pyles, 89 of Greenfield, died Friday, January 16 in Greenfield. She was born August 19, 1914 in Carthage, a daughter of the late Galen and Eva B. (Young) Boring.
Mrs. Pyles, a graduate of Greenfield High School, was a housewife.
Survivors include one son, Robert Pyles of Greenfield; two daughters, Ruth Ann Pierson of Greenfield, and Betty Jean Montgomery of Vian, Okla.; one sister, Mrs. James Samuels of Greenfield; 11 grandchildren, 25 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Wendell W. Pyles in 1976 and one brother, Carrell P. Boring.
Funeral services were held Tuesday, January 20 at Pasco-Stillinger Funeral Home in Greenfield. Burial was in Park Cemetery, Greenfield.
Max S. Foster
Feb. 20, 1925 – Jan. 24, 2004
Max Stuart Foster, 78, a resident of Charlottesville died Saturday, January 24 in Hancock Memorial Hospital in Greenfield. He was born February 20, 1925 in Knightstown, a son of the late Herschel and Helen (Risk) Foster.
Mr. Foster retired from Eli Lilly after 30 years of service and previously operated the B-29 Taxi Cab Service in Knightstown. He was a World War II veteran, serving in Europe with the U.S. Army, He was a member of the Knightstown American Legion Post 152, Knightstown VFW and the Nameless Creek Christian Church.
Survivors include his wife Betty Foster of Charlottesville; one son, Greg (wife Jeannie) Rhoades of Knightstown; five daughters, Deborah Rhoades of Bartlesville, Okla., Denise (husband Don) Akers of New Castle, Charlene (husband Steve) Swails of Greenfield, Amy (husband Ernesto) Castanares of Indianapolis, and Suzanne Karabinus of Worms-Heppenheim, Germany; 14 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren; four brothers, George R. Roster, Robert Foster, Gene Foster and Ed Foster; one sister, Doris Carpenter; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his first wife, Margaret Ellen (Sunny) Foster; one sister Norma James; and a son-in-law, Bernd Karabinus.
Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. today (Wednesday, January 28) in the Condo & Son Funeral Home in Wilkinson with Rev. Jim Carcia officiating. Burial will follow in Glen Cove Cemetery in Knightstown with military graveside rites.
Visitation was held at the funeral home Tuesday, January 27.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Hancock County Cancer Society.
Violet T. Butler
Aug. 15, 1937 – Jan. 20, 2004
Violet T. Butler, 66, a resident of Knightstown, died Tuesday, January 20 at Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis. She was born August 15, 1937 in Lewis County, Ky., a daughter of Lee and Ada (Nolen) Jones.
Mrs. Butler was a homemaker.
Survivors include her husband, John Butler of Knightstown; two daughters, Sue (husband Duane) Benbow of New Castle, and Carol Cash of Knightstown; one son, Paul (wife Debbie) Butler of Knightstown; her mother, Ada Jones of Knightstown; three grandchildren, Ryan Griffey, Brittany Butler and Jody Cash; two sisters, Ruth Butler and Kathy Lines, both of Knightstown; three brothers, Raymond Jones of Knightstown, Lee Roy Jones of Indianapolis, and Roger Jones of Shirley; and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her father, Lee Jones; a daughter, Ramona Butler; three brothers, Arnold, Jerry and Ray Jones; and a sister, Barbara Jones.
Funeral services were held Saturday, January 24 in the Condo & Son Funeral Home in Wilkinson with Pastor Richard Thayer officiating. Burial was in Glen Cove Cemetery in Knightstown.
Visitation was held at the funeral Friday, January 23.
Phillip E. Lukens
Sept. 30, 1936 – Jan. 24, 2004
Phillip E. Lukens, 67, died Saturday, January 24 at Ball Memorial Hospital following an extended illness. He was born September 30, 1936 in Indianapolis.
A veteran of the United States Navy, Mr. Lukens had been a dealer of antiques and furniture. He was formerly employed at Chrysler Corp. and Indiana Gas Co. He was affiliated with the Methodist Church. Phil enjoyed spending time with his granddaughters. He was a collector of canes and marbles and enjoyed fishing and yard work.
Survivors include his wife, Charlotte (Guffey) Lukens whom he married September 28, 1958; one daughter, Michelle (husband Jeff) Pierce of New Castle; two granddaughters, Marci and Mallory Pierce; his mother, Iva Lukens Chew of Knightstown; seven brothers and sisters, Barbara A. (husband Virgil) McKee of Columbus, Ohio, Maurice “Jim” (wife Rita) Lukens Jr. of Knightstown, Gloria J. Thorpe of Eaton, Ohio, Mary Lou (husband Sam) Gray of Carthage, Donna K. (husband John) Gaither of New Castle, Linda L. (husband Ron) Gatewood of Arlington, Va., and Lori (husband James) Chew of Kennard; his mother-in-law, Christine (husband Robert) Garner of Spiceland; several nieces, nephews, cousins and an aunt.
He was preceded in death by his father, Maurice R. Lukens, Sr.; a daughter, Marci Ann Lukens; a sister, Candi Sue Lukens; and his father-in-law, Martin A. Guffey.
Services will be held at 11 a.m. today (Wednesday, January 28) at the Knightstown United Methodist Church with Rev. Steve Brackney officiating. Burial will follow in Mt. Summit Cemetery.
Visitation was held Tuesday, January 27 and one hour prior to the service at Hinsey-Brown Funeral Service and one hour prior to the service at the church.
