Margaret A. Henning

Margaret A. Henning, 90, of Seminole, Fla., died Saturday, August 23 at home. She lived in Scotch Plains, N.J. before moving to Knightstown and then resided in Seminole. She was born Nov. 22, 1912.
Mrs. Henning had worked for a plant nursery and was a member of the Gulf Beaches Garden Club. She was a Lutheran.
Survivors include two sons, Howard Henning of Seminole, and Robert Henning of Las Vegas; a daughter, Jan McMahan of Knightstown; and 14 grandchildren.
Services were held in Seminole, Fla. and graveside services in Scotch Plains, N.J.
Judith Ann Polston
Sept. 5, 1941 – Sept. 15, 2003
Judith Ann Polston, 62, a resident of Shirley, died Monday, September 15 at her home. She was born September 15, 1941 in Maple Valley, a daughter of the late Otho Carl and Hazel (Zachary) Stone.
Mrs. Polston was the owner and manager of Ben’s Bar and Judy’s Dairy Dip in Shirley.
She is survived by her husband, Benjamin Polston of Shirley; two daughters, Dena Polston of Muncie and Susan (husband Ed) Goff of Shirley; two grandchildren, Amber and Josh Goff of Shirley; a sister, Barbara (husband Gene) Rivers of Spiceland; four brothers, Carl (wife Nina) Stone, Jr. of Cartersville, Ga., Ronnie (wife Mary) Stone of Bainbridge, Ga., Jack Stone of Hudson, Fla. and Dean (wife June) Stone of Marietta, Ga.
She was preceded in death by a sister, Connie Meece.
Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday, September 18 in the Condo & Son Funeral Home in Wilkinson with Pastor Bill Roberts officiating. Burial will follow in McCray Cemetery in Wilkinson.
Friends may call at the funeral home today (Wednesday, September 17) from 2-8 p.m.
Gov. Frank O’Bannon
Jan. 30, 1930 – Sept. 13, 2003
Indiana Governor Frank O’Bannon died Saturday, September 13 in Northwestern Memorial Hospital in Chicago, five days after suffering a stroke. He was born January 30, 1930 in Corydon.
Gov. O’Bannon graduated from Corydon High School in 1948 and earned an undergraduate degree in government in 1952 from Indiana University where he was a member of the basketball team. He served two years in the Air Force before returning to IU, where he earned his law degree.
O’Bannon had practiced law in Corydon and had managed First Federal Savings and Loan Association. He was proficient in writing news and sports stories and taking photos for the Corydon Democrat, a family-owned newspaper.
The long-time politician was active in the Corydon community and in many community activities in Indianapolis. He was elected to the Indiana Senate in 1970 where he served until 1988 when he was elected lieutenant governor under Evan Bayh. They were reelected in 1992. In 1996, O’Bannon was elected as governor of Indiana and reelected for his second term in 2000.
Survivors include his wife of 46 years, Judith (Asmus) O’Bannon, a longtime civic leader; three children, Polly Zoeller and Jennifer and Jonathan O’Bannon; five grandchildren; three sisters, Jane Parker, Rosamond Sample and Margaret Fawver.
His brother Robert Jr. died in December 2002.
Services will be held in Indianapolis and Corydon.
The family suggests memorial contributions be made to O’Bannon Foundation in care of Union Federal Bank, 45 N. Pennsylvania St., Indianapolis, IN 46204.
Donald Lee Patton
July 9, 1945 - Sept. 23, 2003
Former Knightstown Jr.-Sr. High School teacher and athletic director, Donald Lee Patton, 58, of Indianapolis died Tuesday, September 23. He was born July 9, 1945.
Mr. Patton was a graduate of North Central High School and a 1969 graduate of Ball State University, where he belonged to Lambda Chi Alpha fraternity. He taught at Lebanon High School for six years, was a teacher and athletic director at Delta High School for 14 years, taught at Chatard High School and finished his career at Knightstown, retiring in 2000.
Patton was a member of the IHSAA, a wrestling official and member of the Indiana High School Wrestling Coaches Association Hall of Fame. He won such prestigious awards as the Ball State University Alumnus Coach of the Year, ISHAA Wrestling Coaches Association Coach of the Year, Tom Carnegie award for overcoming personal adversity, National High School Athletic Coaches Association District 4 Wrestling Coach of the Year and nomination for National Coach of the Year for all high school sports.
He is survived by his wife, Karen; daughter Tara-Lynne (husband Ronald) Sinicki; a son Troy (wife Kim) Patton; three granddaughters, Katie, Caroline and Jenna; a grandson, Clay; his Uncle Bill (wife Trula) Owings; grandmother, Dorothy Emery; other aunts, uncles and nieces and nephews.
Services were held Saturday, September 27 at Flanner & Buchanan Funeral Center Carmel with calling on Friday, September 26 and on Saturday prior to the service. Burial was in Oaklawn Memorial Gardens, Fishers.
Newell B. Tinkle
Sept. 17, 1917 – Oct. 6, 2003
Newell B. Tinkle, 86, a resident of Knightstown, died Monday, October 6 at Regency Place Health Care Center in Greenfield.
He was born September 17, 1917 in Grant County, a son of the late Orville and Iva (Hawkins) Tinkle.
Mr. Tinkle retired from the Shirley Feed Mill and had attended the Markleville Methodist Church.
Survivors include two daughters, Jhon Kay (husband John) Ellingwood of Pendleton and Nancy Tinkle of Knightstown; one son, Larry (wife Debbie) Tinkle of Knightstown; two grandchildren, Sheri Harmon of Greenfield and Brian Tinkle of Knightstown; two great-grandchildren, Bayley and Mason Tinkle, both of Knightstown; one brother, Phil Tinkle of Marion; one sister, Ruth Martin of Indianapolis; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Viola Tinkle in 1994 and a brother, Darle Tinkle.
Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday, October 9 in the Condo & Son Funeral Home in Wilkinson with Rev. Joe Reece officiating. Burial will follow in Glen Cove Cemetery in Knightstown.
Friends may call at the funeral home form 4-8 p.m. today (Wednesday, October 8).
Memorial contributions may be made to the Cancer Society or Giddeons.
Bernice R. Thompson

Wilkinson resident, Bernice R. Thompson, 77, died Thursday, October 2 at Community Hospital in Anderson. He was born March 19, 1926 in Olive Hill, Ky., a son of the late Fred and Idyle (Logan) Thompson.
Mr. Thompson retired after 32 years of service from Regency Electronics of Indianapolis in 1988. He had worked for five years at Hardys Manufacturing and at Chrysler Corp. in New Castle for eight years. He was a member of the Wilkinson Brotherhood and Sisterhood and loved gardening.
Survivors include his wife of 55 years, Pauline Thompson of Wilkinson; four sons, Phillip D. (wife Debbie) Thompson of Shirley, Donnie R. (wife Susan) Thompson of Wilkinson, Victor J. (wife Becky) Thompson of Greenfield and Steve A. Thompson of Wilkinson; four daughters, Gloria K. (husband David) Newman of Huntsville, Texas, Janet (husband Charles) Oldham of Markleville, C. Suzanne Thompson of Fortville and Kristinia J. (husband Barry) McKinsey of Greenfield; 14 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; two brothers, Clyde Thompson of Winchester and Hubert Thompson of Wilkinson; two sisters, Nadine Hilderbrand of Olive Hill, Ky. and Justine Thompson of Shiloh, Ohio; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by three brothers, Glen, William and Fred, Jr. Thompson; and a sister, Virginia Reeder.
Funeral services were held Monday, October 6 in the Condo & Son Funeral Home in Wilkinson with Darrell Deck officiating. Burial was in McCray Cemetery in Wilkinson.
Visitation was at the funeral home Sunday, October 5.
Dave DeWitt
June 11, 1967 – Sept. 30, 2003
Dave DeWitt, 36, a resident of Rushville died Tuesday, September 30. He was born June 11, 1967 in Cocosolo, Panama, the son of Richard Lee Dewitt and Aurelia M. Young DeWitt.
Mr. DeWitt was a 1986 graduate of Knightstown High School. He was a factory worker at Jefferson Smurfit Corp. in Carthage.
Survivors include his father, Rick DeWitt of Carthage; mother Aurelia M. DeWitt of Manilla; one sister, Justina (husband Shawn) Clay of Carrolton; and two nephews, Alex and Adam Clay of Carrolton.
Following cremation, a Mass of Remembrance will be held at 1 p.m. today (Wednesday, October 8) at St. Rose Catholic Church in Knightstown with Rev. Bill Ehalt officiating.
Friends may call one hour prior to the service. Todd Funeral Home handled the arrangements.
