Miss Evelyn Louise Schaeffer, 68, of Greenfield, and a former Knightstown resident, died March 19 at Hancock Memorial Hospital, Greenfield. Miss Schaeffer was born January 2, 1935 in Ogden, a daughter of Bert and Cora Langley Schaeffer.
Survivors include one brother, Joseph Schaeffer of Greenfield; and one sister, Nina (husband Chalmer) Back of Knightstown.
Funeral services were held Friday, March 21 at Todd Funeral Home, Butcher Chapel, Knightstown with Pastor Phil Brown officiating. Burial was in Glen Cove Cemetery. Visitation was held prior to the services at the funeral home on Friday.
Sue A. Langley
Mar. 19, 1947 - Apr. 12, 2003
Sue A. Langley, 56, a resident of Shirley, died Saturday, April 12 at Hancock Memorial Hospital. She was born March 19, 1947 in Henry County, a daughter of John and Evelyn (Wagner) Langley.
She was a homemaker and attended the Westside United Baptist Church in Muncie.
Surviving include her mother, Evelyn Langley of Shirley; one son, Scott (wife Kellie) Langley of Wilkinson; two brothers, David (wife Judy) Langley of New Castle, and Dennis (wife Rhonda) Langley of Shirley; one sister, Judith (husband Jeff) May of Nicholasville, Ky; two grandchildren, Eric and Sara Langley of Wilkinson; and several nieces and nephews.
Her father, John Langley, preceded her in death in 1974.
Funeral services were held Monday, April 14 in the Condo & Son Funeral Home in Wilkinson with Rev. Larry Waters officiating. Burial was in Glen Cove Cemetery in Knightstown. Visitation was held at the funeral home on Monday, April 14 prior to the service. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society.
Harley C. Purtee

A long time Knightstown resident, Harley C. Purtee, 85, died Friday, April 11 at Hancock Memorial Hospital in Greenfield. He was born September 28, 1917 in Wilmington, Ohio, a son of the late Roy and Lilly (Ersel) Purtee.
Mr. Purtee was a self-employed carpenter retiring in 1994. He was a World War II veteran serving in the U.S. Army Air Corps and was a member of the VFW. He was also a member of the Ogden United Methodist Church. He was an avid fisherman, hunter and gardener.
Survivors include his wife of 63 years, Lelah (Brammer) Purtee of Knightstown; two sons, Dan (wife Mary Jo) Purtee of Knightstown, and David (wife Midge) Purtee of North Muskegon, Mich.; one daughter, Sharon (husband Kenneth) Miller of Knightstown; five grandchildren, William, James, Melissa, Megan and Matthew Purtee; two great-grandchildren, Quinn and Jessica Purtee; one sister, Ella Clevenger of New Vienna, Ohio; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by a brother, James Purtee and two sisters, Mildred Copas and Mary Quigley.
Funeral services were held Tuesday, April 15 in the Condo & Son Funeral Home in Wilkinson with Alan McCraine officiating. Burial was in Glen Cove Cemetery in Knightstown with graveside military rites. Visitation was held at the funeral home on Tuesday prior to the service.
Memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart Association.
Mary Kate Ashby

Mary Kate Ashby, 50, a resident of Shirley, died Tuesday, April 15 at her residence. She was born May 25, 1952 in Indianapolis, a daughter of Joseph H. and Eda (Hoeltke) Parker.
Mrs. Ashby was a homemaker and had worked at IPT.
Surviving are three daughters, Gena Ashby of Shirley, Melissa (husband Joe) Day of Carthage, and Annie (husband Marty) Day of Carthage; her mother, Eda Parker of Shirley; six grandchildren, Hannah, Parker, Ben, Joey, Korby and Kasey; one brother, Bob Parker of Indianapolis; five sisters, Jennie Gober of Texas, Sharon Fort of Knightstown, Margie Ford of Shirley, Linda Miller of Indianapolis, and Elaine Ziffrin of Fishers; several nieces and nephews.
Preceding her in death were her husband, Doyle Ashby in 2000; father, Joseph Parker in 1972; two brothers, Joe and Bruce Parker; and two sisters, Anna Muesing and Judy Parker.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, April 18 in the Condo & Son Funeral Home in Wilkinson with Jon Day officiating. Burial will follow in McCray Cemetery in Wilkinson. Friends may call at the funeral home from 4-8 p.m. Thursday, April 18.
William Ernest Kerns

William Ernest "Ernie" Kerns, 76, of Hope, died Sunday, April 6 at his residence. He was born March 14, 1927 in Greenfield, Ohio, a son of the late William Ernest and Marjorie Jean (Parrott) Kerns.
Mr. Kerns married Monica Lundergan on August 17 in Washington. He had been a producer of live entertainment programs for the past 30 years. The 52-year resident of Columbus was also a 52 year a member of St. Bartholomew Catholic church where he was a Eucharistic minister, lector and a member of Men's Ministry. He was the founder and producer of the Fort Wayne Home and Garden Show, one of the largest shows in the Midwest. He was a former teacher for Greensburg Community School Corp.
The entertainer was Rollo the Clown on the Clowning Around Show for WTTV and a clown with Ringling Brothers Circus. He was the 1963 Country Disc Jockey of the year while at WCSI radio in Columbus. He was the author of "How to be a Magic Clown", Volumes I and II. The Army veteran of WW II was also a member of the U.S. Army Band.
Survivors include four sons, Ernie Kerns III and David Kerns, both of Indianapolis, Paul Kerns of Greensburg and John Kerns of Columbus; two daughters, Karen Tejera of Martinsville and Sharon Meltzer of Kennard; 10 grandchildren, Frank Tejera Jr. and Rebecca Williamson of Martinsville, William, Andrew, Evan and Katie Meltzer of Kennard, Daniel and Angela Kerns of Indianapolis and Sean and Victoria Kerns of Columbus; and three great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his wife Monica who died February 24, 2002, an infant daughter Mary Kerns, his parents and a brother, James Kerns. A funeral Mass will be held at 10:30 a.m. today (Wednesday, April 9) at St. Bartholomew Catholic Church with Father Clem Davis officiating. Burial will be in Garland Brook Cemetery, Columbus.
Visitation was Tuesday, April 9 at Myers Funeral Service, Reed & Jewell Chapel on 25th St. in Columbus and prior to services on Wednesday. Memorials may be made to "Friends of Haiti, c/o St. Bartholomew Catholic Church in Columbus.
Berniece May Lee

Berniece May Lee, 88, of Odon, and the mother of local resident, Will Lee, died Thursday, April 3 at Ketchem Memorial Center. She was born March 14, 1915 in Daviess County, a daughter of Walter Sherman and Fannie Hamilton Starling Shafer.
She was married to Parmer L. Lee who preceded her in death on March 11, 2001.
Mrs. Lee was a homemaker and a member of Mt. Nebo United Methodist Church.
She is survived by three daughters, Jeanette DeVine of Odon, Shirley Wade of Washington, and Sharon Akles of Shoals; one son, William E. (wife Diana) Lee of Knightstown; two sisters, Pearl McClellan of Indianapolis and Leone Pearson of Bloomfield; 18 grandchildren, 44 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild. Besides her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by one daughter, Nancy DeVine; three brothers, Vernon, Hershel and Carl Shafer; one sister, Norma Groover; and two grandsons, James Richard Hugunin and Mathew E. Lee.
Funeral services were held Monday, April 7 at the Odon Nazarene Church with Rev. Trevor Stanley officiating. Burial was in Walnut Hill Cemetery. Visitation was held Sunday at the Jenkins Funeral Home in Bloomfield and prior to the services on Monday. Contributions may be made to the Mathew E. Lee Memorial 4-H Scholarship Fund.
Mary Kathleen Riggs

Mary Kathleen "Kat" Riggs, 87, a resident of rural Cadiz, died Sunday, April 6 at Rawlins House Convalescent Center in Pendleton. She was born February 3, 1916 in Henry County, a daughter of the late Garfield and Armittie (Craig) Pate.
Mrs. Riggs was a 1934 graduate of Cadiz High School. She was a homemaker and a member of the Friendly Neighbors Home Makers Club and the Farm Bureau Association.
Survivors include two daughters, Phyllis (husband Harry) Boze of Mechanicsburg, and Jama (husband Dr. Robert) Tennant of Greenfield; one son, Glenn Riggs of Shirley; 10 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; one sister-in-law, Tudie Kuhn; one son-in-law, Ronnie Sowers; one daughter-in-law, Deanna Riggs; and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Chester (Codge) Riggs in 1993; one son, Keith Riggs in 1969; one daughter, Marlene K. Sowers, 2001; one granddaughter, Glenna Skinner, 1995; two brothers, Sam and Glenn Pate; one sister, Helen Fowler; a half-brother, Harold Kuhn and half-sister, Marie Unger.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday in the Condo & Son Funeral Home in Wilkinson with Marty Ballard officiating. Burial will follow in Mechanicsburg Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home from 4-8 p.m. today (Wednesday, April 9).
