Indiana Marriages, 1780-1992

Versie Ellison
Oct. 14, 1917 – Feb. 5, 2002

Versie Ellison, 84, died Tuesday, February 5 at the Middletown Nursing Home & Rehabilitation Center in Middletown after an extended illness.

Versie was born in Carter County, Ky. on October 14, 1917, a son of the late William Riley & Gertrude Cline Ellison. He moved to the Shirley area in 1941 and had lived in Kennard for the past 17 years. Versie retired from General Motors, Guide Lamp Division in Anderson after 33 years of service. He enjoyed hunting, gardening and working in his yard.

Survivors include his wife of 61 years, the former Vesta O. Hilderbrand whom he married on December 27, 1940 at Olive Hill, Ky.; one son, Rick (wife Julie) Ellison of Springfield, Ohio; one daughter, Kathy Ellison of Kennard; 11 grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren; one brother, Lawrence of Flemmingburg, Ky., three sisters, Bonnie Willman of Hillsboro, Ohio, Rena Basford of Winchester, Ohio and Cloma of Eaton, Ohio; several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, two sons, Wayne Lee Ellison on Nov. 17, 1993 and Paul Ellison on Nov. 4, 1997, two brothers and two sisters.

Graveside services were held Saturday, February 9 at the Green Hills Memory Garden west of New Castle. Visitation was Friday, February 8 at the Marshall & Erlewein Funeral Home, Estell Chapel in Shirley.

Homer J. Warner
May 29, 1925 – Feb. 9, 2002

Homer J. Warner, 74, of Spiceland died Saturday, February 9 at the Hancock Memorial Hospital after a short illness. He was a son of the late Burleigh and Dortha Hampson Warner.

Warner lived most of his life in the Henry and Hancock County area and worked as a sales representative in the pharmaceutical industry for many years. He graduated from the Charlottesville High school with the class of 1943 and attended Indiana State Teachers College. A veteran of WW II, he served in the Army Air Corp. as a B-17 gunner with the 384th Bomber Group. He flew 35 missions over Germany and was honorably discharged from service on Oct. 28, 1945. Homer enjoyed farming and raising Standardbred racehorses. He was a member of the U.S. Trotting & Pacing Horse Association and was also a member of the Four Square Gospel Church in New Castle.

Survivors include his wife of 54 years, the former Margaret D. Lipp whom he married May 2, 1947 in Willow Branch; two sons, Mike Warner of Florida and Greg Warner of New Castle; two daughters, Gilda (husband Mark) Hubbell of Lewisville, and Durette Rash of New Castle; seven grandchildren, two step-grandchildren and one step-great-grandchild; one brother, Paul (wife Joan) Warner of Kansas; mother-in-law Grace Lipp of Shirley and a sister-in-law; several nieces and nephews.

Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by one brother and one sister.

Services will be at 10 a.m. today (Wednesday) at the Marshall & Erlewein Funeral Home, Lewisville Chapel in Lewisville with Rev. Charles McDonald officiating. Burial will follow in the McCray Cemetery at Wilkinson.

Visitation was Tuesday, February 12 at the funeral home. Memorial contributions can be made to the Four Square Gospel Commissary, 3200 S. 14th St., New Castle, IN 47362.

Harold E. Kirk
June 5, 1929 – Feb 16, 2002

Harold E. Kirk, 72, a longtime resident of the Knightstown community died at Saturday, February 16 at Hancock Memorial Hospital in Greenfield. He was born on June 5, 1929 in Kennard, a son of the late Floyd and Rozetta (Muterspaugh) Kirk.

Harold retired from Western Electric in 1986. He was a member of the Knightstown Lions Club, where he served in many local, district and state offices and was elected District 25F Governor. Kirk was a former member of the Knightstown Town Board and a member of the Kennard Friends Church.

Survivors include his wife of 53 years, Betty (Mendenhall) Kirk; one son, Rick Kirk of Knightstown; one daughter, Pamela Sue Sickels of Knightstown; two grandchildren, Amy and Eric Sickels; and one great-granddaughter, Kaitlynn Day, all of Knightstown; a half-sister, Louise Roux of Florida; a half-brother, Fred Kirk of New Castle; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. today (Wednesday) in Condo & Son Funeral Home in Wilkinson with Pastor Chris Sitler officiating. Burial will follow in Glen Cove Cemetery. Visitation was held Tuesday, February 19 at the funeral home.

Memorial contributions may be made to District 25F Camp Woodsmoke of the Lions Club.

Vernon C. Jones
Feb. 4, 1935 – Feb. 16, 2002

Vernon C. Jones, 67, Carthage, died Saturday, February 16 at Community Hospital East in Indianapolis. He was born February 4, 1935 in Morgan County, TN, a son of the late Mintford and Elsie (Dixon) Jones.

Mr. Jones was an Army veteran and a retired painter. He was a member of the Knightstown American Post 152.

Survivors include three sons, Jefferson T. Jones, Greensboro, Brandon Levi Jones, Knightstown and Jeb Stuart Jones, Indianapolis; two daughters, Misty Jones, Grays Lake, IL and Tammy Browning, Williamsburg; four brothers, Kenneth Jones, Gretna, LA, James (Shank) Jones, Knightstown, Roland Jones, Douglasville, GA and Roy Jones, Shelbyville; one sister, Linda Sullivan, Shelbyville; and 12 grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by five brothers and four sisters.

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. on Friday, February 22 at the Todd Funeral Home, Butcher Chapel in Knightstown with military rites conducted by the Knightstown American Legion and the VFW.

Rhea Ellis Hutson
July 18, 1912 – Feb. 12, 2002

Rhea Hutson, 89, of Knightstown, died Tuesday, February 12 at Regency Place Nursing Home in Greenfield. She was born July 18, 1912, a daughter of Bert and Isabelle DeArmond Ellis.

She lived most of her life in Henry County and owned and operated Rhea’s Apparel on the Knightstown Square for 21 years. She was a member of the Kennard Christian Church.

Survivors include two sons, Gilbert (wife, Patty) of Knightstown, and Gary (wife Sharon) of Lewisville; five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 56 years, Cliff in 1992; her brothers, Garten, Claude, Harry, Robert, Paul, Lewis and Clarence; a sister, Laura Mar Blackburn; and a grandson, Donald Hutson. Graveside services were held Friday, February 15 at Glen Cove Cemetery in Knightstown. There was no public calling. Greene’s Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

James A. Gabbert
Sept. 7, 1937 – Feb. 15, 2002

James A. Gabbert, 64, of Rushville, died February 16 at Rush Memorial Hospital in Rushville. He was born September 6, 1937 in Kentucky, a son of the late James P. and Hazel (Voorhies) Gabbert.

James has been in Rushville most of his life. He had been employed at Farm Fans in Beech Grove, where he was a welder. He was a member of the Rushville Church of Christ where he had been an elder.

Survivors include his wife, Shirley A. Gabbert whom he married May 3, 1958; his mother, Hazel Gabbert of Rushville; two sons, Jeff (wife Theresa) Gabbert, Connersville, and Jay (wife Anita) Gabbert of Straughn; one daughter, Sheryl (husband Gabe) Ravelli, Gings; three sisters, Betty Sherman of Alabama, Nan (husband Bud) Pearsey and Mary (husband Tom) Floyd of Deltona, FL; eight grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Services were held Tuesday, February 19 at Moster & Cox Mortuary with Jerry Holdman officiating. Burial was in the Raleigh (Zion) Cemetery in Rush County. Visitation was Monday, February 18 at the funeral home.

The family request memorial contributions can be made to Rushville Church of Christ or to the American Lung Association.

Carolyn Esther McGill
Feb. 9, 1933 – Feb. 8, 2002

Carolyn Esther (Johns) McGill, 68, a resident of El Paso, TX, and a former resident of the Wilkinson community died Friday, February 8, 2002 at her residence in Texas. She was born February 9, 1933 in Wilkinson, a daughter of Joseph Earl and Vivian Doris (McCallister) Johns.

Carolyn graduated salutatorian from New Castle High School in 1951. In addition, she earned a Bachelor of Science degree with honors in Criminal Justice from the University of Texas of El Paso. She was an active member of Cielo Vista Church in El Paso. Carolyn retired after 30 years with the Civil Service in Finance and Accounting.

She is survived by her five children, Debra Ann (husband James) Hedgepet, Douglas Alan (wife Lesli), David Austin, Denise Amber, Daniel Alton (wife Michelle); 10 grandchildren, Tony, Travis, Kristin, Terri, Lisa, Alyssa, Sloan, Nathan, Megan and Julia; and one great-grandchild, Gianni.

Graveside services were held Saturday, February 16 at McCray Cemetery in Wilkinson. Visitation was held prior to the service on Saturday from 9-11 a.m. at the Condo & Son Funeral Home in Wilkinson.
