Indiana Marriages, 1780-1992

Mary E. Clark
Nov. 25, 1916 – June 14, 2002

Mary E. Clark, 85, formerly of Knightstown, died Friday, June 14 at Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis. She was born November 25, 1916 in Wells County, a daughter of the late Joe and Gladys (Schmidt) Stapp.

On February 4, 1939, she married Wayne Clark who survives. The couple had been married for 63 years. Mrs. Clark was a graduate of Spiceland High School. She retired in 1979 from the Indiana and Soldiers and Sailors Children’s Home after 20 years of service. She was also employed at the Knightstown Public Library and a member of the Knightstown Friends Church.

Survivors include her husband, Wayne Clark of Greenfield; one son, Frank Clark of Anchorage, Alaska; three daughters, Waynetta (husband Bob Dunn of Knightstown; Diane (husband John) Love of Knightstown and Pam Noble of Evanston, Illinois; three brothers, Alvin Stapp of Carthage, Tom Stapp of Jasonville, and Charles Stapp of Smithsville, Tennessee; one sister, Justine Southwood of Logansport; a sister-in-law, Sarah Stapp of Bloomington; four grandchildren, Melinda Wright, Mick (wife Megan) Wright, and Nate and Kate Noble; four great-grandchildren, Clark, Carson, Chloe and Cole Wright and several step-grandchildren.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by three brothers, one sisters and one great-grandchildren.

Services for Mrs. Clark will be held today (Wednesday) at 19 a.m. at the Todd Funeral Home, Butcher Chapel in Knightstown with Rev. Mervin Kilmer officiating. Burial will be made in Glen Cove Cemetery in Knightstown. Visitation was held Tuesday, June 18 at the funeral home.

Memorials may be made to the Cancer Society or the Alzheimer’s Association with envelopes at the funeral home.

Ada Walker-Cranfill
Feb 13, 1914 – June 24, 2002

Ada Walker-Cranfill, 88, a former resident of Knightstown, died Monday, June 24 at Brandywine Manor Convalescent Center in Greenfield.

Mrs. Walker-Cranfill was born February 13, 1914 in Salt Lick, Kentucky, a daughter of the late Albert and Mary Catherine (Staton) Wills.

She retired from Indiana Knitwear and was a member of the Knightstown Baptist Church.Survivors include one son, James (wife Ruth) Walker of New Castle; two daughters, Shirley (husband Huelon) Anderson of Knightstown, and Jean (husband Leo) Egan of Grant City; two step children, Ira Cranfill of Florida and Francis VanderWeide of Michigan; seven grandchildren, Randy Anderson of Knightstown, Jimmy Walker of New Castle, Tina Davis of New Castle, Teresa Kaczmarek of Anderson, David Walker of Greenfield and Lorri Egan of Knightstown; three step-grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband Floyd Walker in 1969 and her second husband Vernice Cranfill in 1998, and two brothers, Burley and Hurby Wills.

Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday, June 27 in the Condo & Son Funeral Home in Wilkinson with Jon Day officiating. Burial will follow at Glen Cove Cemetery in Knightstown. Friends may call at the funeral home today (Wednesday) from 4-8 p.m.

Donald E. West
July 21, 1920 – June 23, 2002

Donald E. West, 81, a resident of Shirley, died Sunday, June 23 in St. John’s Hospital in Anderson after a brief illness. He was born July 21, 1920 in Madison County, a son of the late Oral and Garnet West.

Mr. West retired from General Motors on September 30, 1976 where he was a millwright. HE was a World War 2 Army veteran, a member of Murat Temple, past member of Murat Motorcycle Drill Team and a 50-year member of Elwood Chapter #109 R.A.M., a 50-year member of the York Rite of Indiana an a 50-year member of Quincy Lodge #230 F&AM.

Survivors include his wife Betty of Shirley; one stepdaughter, Margo Olson of Madison; several nieces and nephews; and special friends, the Hobbs Family.

His first wife, Mary Louise West, preceded him in death in 1981.

Public graveside funeral services were held Tuesday, June 25 in Anderson Memorial Park with Pastor Kurt Stone officiating. There was no calling.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Madison County Shrine Crippled Children’s Van.

Lewis J. Hahn
Sept. 8, 1909 - June 14, 2002

Lewis J, Hahn, 92, a Knightstown resident and formerly of Muncie, died Friday, June 14 at Regency Place in Greenfield. He was born Sept. 8, 2002 in Muncie, the son of Anna Bumgardner Hahn and William Hahn.

Lewis grew up in Muncie and graduated from Muncie Central High School in 1927. Lew, as he affectionately known, lived in the Muncie area until moving to Knightstown in 1977. He retired from Borg Warner in Muncie. Mr. Hahn was a member of the Knightstown United Methodist Church where he sand in the choir for many years, and was also a member of the Fountain Square Quartet. He enjoyed golfing, bowling, fishing and pitching horseshoes.

Survivors include his wife of 72 years, Florence (Fallis) Hahn; three sons, Dean Hahn of Knightstown, Richard (wife Josephine) Hahn of Muncie, and Robert (wife Janet) Hahn of Knightstown; seven grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

Two sisters and four brothers preceded him in death.

Services were held Monday, June 17 in The Meeks Mortuary Chapel with Pastor Steve Brackney officiating. Burial was in the Gardens of Memory Cemetery, north of Muncie. Visitation was Sunday, June 16 and one hour prior to services at the mortuary.

Memorial contributions may be directed to the Knightstown United Methodist Church Memorial Trust Fund, 27 S. Jefferson St., Knightstown, IN 46148.

Catherine Brashaber
Aug. 26, 1930 –Feb. 2, 2002

Catherine “Katie” Brashaber, 71, died Saturday, February 2 at her home in Rushville. She was born August 26, 1930, a daughter of the late Marshall and Mary C. (Scott) Wright. On June 26, 1950, she married Kenneth Brashaber, who survives.

Katie spent her early life in Bloomington but had lived in Rush County since 1951. She was a Bloomington High School graduate in the class of 1948. She was a member of the St. Paul United Methodist Church in Rushville, an assistant 4-H leader in the Center Township Girls Lucky 4-H Club, P.E.O. (chapter M, Psi Iota Xi, Rush County Republican Women’s Assoc., Flatrock Investment Group and Center Township Home Ec. Club. She was an accomplished homemaker, seamstress, reader, traveler and loved spending time with her family.

Survivors besides her husband include one son, Phil Brashaber, Rushville; two daughters, Debbie (husband Wayne) Howell Jr. of Fishers, and Susan (husband Terry) Barnett, Lebanon; one brother, John E. Wright, Bloomington; one sister, Evelyn (husband Cecil) Benefiel, Washington; and six grandchildren.

Services were held Tuesday, February 5 at St. Paul United Methodist Church with Rev. David Patrick officiating. Burial was in the East Hill Cemetery, Rushville.

Visitation was held Monday, February 4 at the Moster & Cox Funeral Home in Rushville.

The family request that memorial contributions be made to St. Paul’s United Methodist Church, Rush Memorial Hospital Tree of Life, Rushville Public Library, P.E.O. Scholarship Fund and the Hospice of Decatur County.

James “Floyd” Davis
Dec. 13, 1928 – Feb. 1, 2002

James “Floyd” Davis, 73, of New Castle, died Friday, February 1 at his home after an extended illness. He was born December 13, 1928 in New Castle, the son of the late James Washington and Anna Elizabeth Stephens Davis.

Floyd, a lifelong resident of New Castle, graduated from New Castle High School in 1945. He owned and operated the Davis Trucking Co. He was an avid fisherman and bowler, enjoyed his family and writing poetry. Davis designed and build his home where he had lived since 1975.

Survivors include his wife of 52 years, Iris Fern Littrell Davis whom he married on February 27, 1949 in Connersville; one son, James F. (wife Betty Lou) Davis Jr. of New Castle; one daughter Ava Lynn (husband Eddie) Vaughn of Bowling Green, Ky.; three granddaughters, three grandsons; three brothers, Gene and Steve Davis of New Castle, and Everett of Dublin; two sisters, Rosemary Latham of New Castle and Irene Meyer of Hagerstown; and several nieces and nephews.

Services were held Tuesday, February 5 at the Marshall & Erlewein Funeral Home, Lewisville Chapel. Burial was in the Green Hills Memory Garden on S.R. 38, west of New Castle. Visitation was Monday, February 4 at the funeral home.

Memorial contributions can be made to the Henry County Hospice, 1000 N. 16th St., New Castle, 47362.

Jimmie P. Higgins
May 15, 1934 – Feb. 10, 2002

Jimmie P. Higgins, 67, a longtime resident of the Knightstown Community died unexpectedly Sunday, February 10 at Hancock Memorial Hospital in Greenfield following an extended illness. He was born May 15, 1934 in New Castle, a son of the late Robert H. and Della M. (Craig) Higgins. Jim was employed in the maintenance department of The Indiana Soldiers and Sailors Children’s Home, Knightstown, and was on the labor relation’s board of The Unity Team Union. Mr. Higgins was also a member of the American Legion.

Survivors include his wife of 33 years, Marcella (Covill) Higgins; two sons, Jimmie Higgins, Jr. of Batesville, AK, and Darrell Higgins of Marion; one daughter, Shari (husband John) Manck of Arlington, TX; one stepdaughter, Roxane (husband Robert) Polk of Knightstown; four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren; two sisters, Betty Swincher of Knightstown, and Barbara Brown of Hapeville, GA; and several nieces and nephews.

Graveside services will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday, February 14 in Glen Cove Cemetery, Knightstown with Jon Day officiating. Knightstown American Legion Post #152 will conduct military services. Visitation will be today (Wednesday) from 4-8 p.m. at the Condo & Son Funeral Home in Wilkinson. Memorial contributions maybe made to the American Cancer Society, Hancock County Unit, %Patty Cook, 426 Hamilton St., Fortville, IN 46040.
