Indiana Marriages, 1780-1992

Marlin K. McDaniel
May 19, 1933 – Aug 2, 2002

Marlin K. McDaniel, 69, a resident of Indianapolis, died unexpectedly Friday, August 2 at his home. He was born May 19, 1933 in Wilkinson, a son of the late Lowell and Ethel (Hittle) McDaniel. Mr. McDaniel was a retired attorney practicing in Richmond. He was an Indiana State Senator serving from 1963-1982 and held several leadership position in the Senate and the state Republican Party including Senate Minority leader.

McDaniel served in the U.S. Army from 1957-1959. He was an active member of many civic organizations including Masonic Lodge, Shrine, Elks Club, Moose Lodge and Phi Gamma Delta.

He is survived by three sons, Dr. Douglas McDaniel of Richmond, Curtis (wife Diedre) McDaniel of Carmel, and Scott (wife Adrienne) McDaniel of Richmond; two daughters, Patricia (husband Cody) Dooley of Indianapolis, Susan (husband John) Hart of Tucson, Arizona.; and seven grandchildren. He was preceded in death by one brother, Marvin Mcdaniel.

Private graveside services will be held. Friends may call today (Wednesday) from 5-8 p.m. at Condo & Son Funeral Home in Wilkinson. Memorial contributions may be made to the charity of your choice.

Edgar A. Wright
Mar. 23, 1904 – Aug. 2, 2002

Edgar A. Wright, 98, of Anderson died Friday, August 2 at the Countryside Manor in Anderson. He was born Richmond on March 23, 1904, a son of the late Clifford and Caroline (Fritz) Wright.

Mr. Wright was a retired restaurant owner having owned the Coffee Restaurant in Pennville.

Survivors include one son, Gary (wife Nancy) Wright of Anderson; one granddaughter, Deborah Tipton of Pendleton; one step-granddaughter, Melissa Krieg, Chesterfield; one great-grandson, Greg Allen Tipton of Pendleton; one step-great-grandson, Justin Krieg of Chesterfield; and several nieces and one nephew. He was preceded in death by his wife Sharon (Pearce) Wright on September 29, 1993 as well as three brothers and one sister.

Services for Mr. Wright were held Monday, August 5 at the Todd Funeral Home, Butcher Chapel in Knightstown with Rev. Eric Fox officiating. Burial was in Everton Cemetery at Everton.

Visitation was at the funeral home for one hour prior to services.

Dorothy Wright
Nov. 11, 1928 – Aug. 12, 2002

Dorothy Dean Higgs Wright, 73, longtime organist at First United Methodist Church in New Castle and secretary at Carthage Elementary School, died Monday, August 12 from ovarian cancer. Visitation is from 4-8 p.m. Wednesday with funeral services at 11 a.m. Thursday, both at First United Methodist Church in New Castle with Rev. Joe Wyatt officiating.

Dorothy Wright was born November 11, 1928 in New Castle, a daughter of Nelson and Martha Wiggins Higgs. She graduated from New Castle High School and Indiana University with a degree in music education. She was a teacher at the Indiana Soldiers and Sailors Children’s Home near Knightstown when she met Frederick Albert Wright. The two were married December 28, 1952 in New Castle.

Mrs. Wright was church organist for 37 years and recently retired after 25 years as Carthage Elementary secretary. The family lived near Knightstown fro nearly 50 years where Dorothy delighted in attracting hummingbirds to her large collection of plants and flowers. She also enjoyed lighthouse collectibles especially those related to Rhode Island where her mother’s family originated. The couple was supporters of Knightstown and New Castle sports in which their children and grandchildren participated. They also assisted with the FUMC’s Red Bird Missions in Beverly, Ky.

Children of the couple include Terry Wright and his wife, Susan of Philadelphia, Tenn., and his sons, Dylan and wife Teralyn of Sweetwater, Tenn., and Terry Jr. and Wife, Christi, and their children Cain, Victoria and Hannah of Knoxville, Tenn.; son Timothy Wright and wife, Karen, of LaPorte, and their two children, Chris Thielen of Lafayette and Michael Thielen of LaPorte; daughter, Teresa Gray who lives in New Castle, as does her boyfriend, Dave Thornburgh, and her children, Brandon and Dustin and son Brinton and his girlfriend Darci Chester.

She is also survived by her brother, Robert (wife Jerry) Higgs of Middletown and their children, Michael of Springport, and Paul and his wife Carla of Westfield; Sister-in-law Dorothy Cowen and husband Bill of Beardstown, Ill., and their children, Michael and his wife JoAnn of Montgomery, Ill., and Bill of Terre Haute.

Dorothy was preceded in death by her parents, nephew Jimmy Higgs and grandson Michael Racek. Macer-Hall Funeral Home in New Castle is handling arrangements. Memorial contributions may be made to FUMC’s Music Fund or to Henry County Memorial Hospital Hospice in New Castle.

Donald L. Steward
Mar. 11, 1930 – Aug. 2, 2002

Donald L. “Sarg” Steward, 72, brother of a Knightstown resident Ellen Steward Bennett, died August 2 at his home in Virginia Beach. HE was born March 11, 1930 in Shelby County, a son of Joseph and Frances Steward.

Steward was a 20 Army veteran having served in Germany, Greenland and Vietnam.

Other survivors besides his sister Ellen is his wife Clare of Virginia Beach; three daughters, Janie at home, Virginia and Carolyn, both of El Paso, Texas, and Dona of San Antonio; two sons, Donald Jr. of El Paso, and Wayne of Virginia.

There were no services held.

Anthony Lynn Johnson
Jan. 10, 1968 - Aug. 16, 2002

Anthony (Tony) Lynn Johnson, 34, a resident of Kennard, died Friday, August 16 in Rushville. He was born January 10, 1968 in Anderson, a son of William and Karen (Baker) Johnson of Kennard.

Johnson worked at both Intat Precision Metals in Rushville and Detroit Steel in Shelbyville. He was a union steward at Detroit Steel UAW and was an avid fisherman.

Surviving besides his parents are his wife, Regenea Kay (Cook) Johnson of Kennard; a daughter, Miranda Johnson and a son, Jacob Johnson, both of Kennard; one sister, Lisa (husband Jeff) White of Kennard; and a niece.

Memorial services will be held at 7 p.m. today (Wednesday) August 21, in the Condo & Son Funeral Home in Wilkinson with Pastor Larry Delon officiating.

Friends may call at the funeral home today from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. and from 5 p.m. until time of service at 7 p.m.

Alice C. Charley
June 27, 1908 - Aug. 16, 2002

Alice C. Charley, 94, a resident of Shirley and a former resident of Greensburg, Penn., died Friday, August 16. She was born June 27, 1908 in Greensburg, Penn., a daughter of the late William and Ida (Shuster) Johnston.

Mrs. Charley attended public school at Stoney Springs School in Greensburg and Greensburg Business College. She had worked at Troutmans Department Store and Brauns Bakery in Greensburg. She was a member of Zion Lutheran Church and Alwine Civic Center in Greensburg.

Survivors include three daughters, Alice (husband William) Parks of Greensburg, Carol (husband Ray) Wright of Shirley, and Rebecca (husband Donald) Hammer of Shirley; two sons, Wayne Topper of Cincinnati, Ohio, and Dale Topper of Hunker, Penn.; 21 grandchildren, 38 great-grandchildren, eight great-great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by two husbands, W. Wayne Topper and Charles Charley; one son, R. Ronald Topper; one brother, Charles Johnston, and two sisters, Myrtle Steele and Anna Margaret Johnston.

Funeral services will be held today (Wednesday) at the Barnhart Funeral Home in Greensburg, Penn. with Gene Stuckey Sr. officiating. Burial will follow at Twin Valley Cemetery in Delmont, Penn. Visitation was held at the funeral home Tuesday, August 20. Condo & Son Funeral Home in Wilkinson handled arrangements.

Phyllis V. Mattix
April 23, 1908 - Aug. 12, 2002

Phyllis V. Johnson Mattix, 94, a longtime resident of Knightstown, died Monday, August 12 at Lakeview Nursing Center, Indianapolis. She was born April 23, 1908.

Mrs. Mattix was a floral arranger for many years at Schatzlein's Greenhouses in Knightstown. She was a birthright member of the Spiceland Friends Meeting. While living in Knightstown, she attended the Wesleyan Church. She was a member of Knightstown Business and Professional Women, Pythian Sisters, and until about the age of 90, was the treasurer of the Senior Citizens Center.

Survivors include one son, Rex (wife Carol) Mattix of Indianapolis; two granddaughters, Rexanne Cortez of Arizona, and Penny Williams of Indianapolis; five great-grandchildren and 2 great-great-grandchildren.

She was the widow of Robert Mattix who died in 1991.

Services were held August 15 at Greene's Funeral Home with Rev. Roger Abrams officiating. Burial was in Glen Cove Cemetery.
