Raymond N. Protsman

Raymond N. Protsman, 88, of Dublin, died Thursday, November 15 at Hickory Creek Nursing Home in New Castle after a three-year illness.
A lifelong member of the Dublin community, Raymond was born here on October 3, 1913, a son of the late William O. and Glenna Needham Protsman. He graduated from Straughn High School in 1931. He worked as a carpenter and was a charter member of the Gospel Mission Church at Dublin.
Survivors include his son, Larry (wife Donna) Protsman of Straughn; two grandchildren, Lori Protsman of Carmel, and Chris (wife Angel) Protsman of Spiceland; two great-granddaughters, Kayla and Paige Protsman; a niece and several nephews.
He was preceded in death by Violet Mae Day Protsman on July 27, 1985; one brother, Russell Protsman and one sister, Martha Harris Clugston.
Services were held Monday, November 19 at the Gospel Mission Church in Dublin with Rev. Paul Isch officiating. Burial was in South Lawn Cemetery in Dublin.
Visitation was Sunday, November 18 at the Marshall & Erlewein Funeral Home in Dublin.
George S. Collyer
Nov. 29, 1906 – Nov. 13, 2001
Memorial services for George S. Collyer, 95, of Bloomington, were will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, November 24 in First Presbyterian Church in Bloomington, and at 11 a.m. Saturday, December 1at in First Presbyterian Church, Ft. Wayne. He died Tuesday, November 13 in Bloomington.
Following graduation from Butler University, Collyer taught social studies at Knightstown High School and coached basketball and other sports. Collyer, formerly of Indianapolis, was a history teacher for 33 years for South Side High School in Ft. Wayne, retiring in 1971. A coach, he led the football team to two city championships and his track teams produced a number of state champions.
He received a bachelor’s degree from Butler University and a master’s degree from Indiana University. He was a member and past president of Phi Delta Theta fraternity.
Survivors include his wife, Esther Ritz Collyer; and a son George Stanley Collyer Jr.

Helen Frances Schatzlein
Aug. 7, 1927 – Dec. 2, 2001
Memorial services for Helen Frances Hoover Schatzlein, 74, Fishers, formerly of Knightstown, will be at 2:30 p.m. Thursday, December 6 at Knightstown’s Bethel Presbyterian Church of which she was a member and former ruling elder. Mrs. Schatzlein died December 2 at the Hospice Home in Fort Wayne.
Mrs. Schatzlein, an accountant, was co-founder of Indianapolis retail George Thomas Florist and was its Corporate Secretary until her retirement in 1987. She was also an adviser to her husband and sons in the development and management of TRC Studios, Indiana’s leading provider of audio and video production services from its Indianapolis headquarters during 1972-2000.
Helen was a 1948 graduate of Indiana University where she was a member of Chi Omega sorority and Beta Gamma Sigma honorary fraternity. She was also a member of the Indiana University Varsity Club, Kappa Kappa Kappa sorority and Shakespeare Club of Knightstown.
She is survived by her husband of 53 years, George of Fishers; one son Michael of Fort Wayne; six grandchildren Michael, Tricia, Derek, Jonathan, Jameson and George Schatzlein; one sister, Marcia Kenward of Miami; and one brother Robert Hoover, former of Fort Wayne and now residing in Indianapolis and Anthem, Ariz.
She was preceded in death by son Gary in April 2001.

Margaret Wood
Aug. 4, 1909 – Nov. 30, 2001
Margaret Wood, 92, a resident of Fishers, died Friday, November 30 at Carmel Care Nursing Home. She was born August 4, 1909 in North Vernon, a daughter of the late Charles N. and Zelpha G. Weber.
The former Knightstown resident, was a 50-year member of the Knightstown United Methodist Church, where she had been an active member of the Martha Circle. She had served as Psi Iota Xi president for two terms and belonged to the American Legion Auxiliary and Avon Club.
Survivors include a son, John D. Wood of Carthage; a daughter Mary Lynn Lareau of Fishers; seven grandchildren, eight grand-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.
She was preceded in death by a son William Wood, her parents, three brothers and one sister.
Services were held Tuesday, December 4 at the Knightstown United Methodist Church with Pastor Steve Brackney and Rev. George Davis officiating. Burial was in Glen Cove Cemetery.
Memorials may be given to the Knightstown United Methodist Church and St. Mark’s United Methodist Church.
Arrrangements were handled by Greene’s Funeral Home.
Nancy Leisure
May 13, 1934 – Dec. 2, 2001
Nancy Leisure, 67, of Carthage, died Sunday, December 2. She was born May 13, 1934 in Des Moines, Iowa, a daughter of Donald W. and Norma Lowene Miller Hushour.
Mrs. Leisure had lived most of her life in Rush County. She was a 1952 graduate of Rushville High School. She had worked with her husband for nearly 25 years a their machine shop, Ranaco Products. Also she had been a cook at Jackson and Mays Schools. Nancy was a member of the Little Blue River Church of Christ, member of the 52 Class Card Club, was vice president and past president of the Food, Fad and Fashion Home Ec Club, a member of the Antique Auto Association and the Winchester Old Timers Club and was active with the Rush with the Rush County Extension Office.
She is survived by her husband, Raymond Leisure of Carthage; her mother, Norma Hushour of Rushville; three sons, Bruce Leisure, Morristown, Paul Leisure of Mays and Steve Leisure of Indianapolis; Kim (husband Michael) Riggs of Knightstown; one brother, Richard L. Hushour of Connersville; nine grandchildren and one great- grandchild.
Services will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday, December 6 at the Moster & Cox Mortuary in Rushville with Rev. John Skomp officiating.
Burial will be in Glen Cove Cemetery, Knightstown.
Visitation will be from 4-8 p.m. today (Wednesday) at the funeral home.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Heart Association or the American Diabetes Association.
Carl D. Stoots
Mar. 17, 1939 – Dec. 6, 2001
A brother of area residents, Carl D. Stoots, 62 of Strasburg, Penn., died Thursday, December 6 at Lancaster General Hospital after a brief illness. He was born in Connersville, a son of the late Ralph F. and Velma White Stoots.
For the past five years, he was employed as an estimator for Scenic Ridge Construction, Gordonville, Penn. He had previously owned D&E Construction Co.
Carl was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Strasburg where he served as a trustee and deacon. An avid golfer, he was a member of Meadia Heights Golf Club in Lancaster. He was a former member of the Strasburg Boro Planning Commission. He was a member and Past Master of the Free & Accepted Masons Lodge #175 and Past Patron of Order of Eastern Star #543, both of Greensboro.
Survivors include his wife of 43 years, Linda L. Hummel Stoots; a daughter, Cynthia L (husband John P) Shank of Lititz, Penn.; two grandchildren; two brothers, Walter L. (wife Martha J.) Stoots, New Castle, and Philip Dwayne, (wife Susan) Stoots of Indianapolis; three sisters, Patricia J. (husband Gilbert) Hutson, Joyce M. (husband Gary) Plank, both of Knightstown, and Sharon R. (husband Gary) Hutson of Lewisville.
A son, Jay D. Stoots, preceded Carl in death.
Services were held at 11 a.m. Monday, December 10 at the First Presbyterian Church of Strasburg with Rev. Steven W. Clark and Rev. Jennifer B. Clark officiating. Visitation was Sunday from 7-9 p.m. and on Monday prior to the service at the Church.

Virginia Marie Thurston
Aug. 23, 1919 – Dec. 6, 2001
Virginia Marie (Gard) Thurston, 82, of New Castle died Thursday, December 6 at Henry County Memorial Hospital. She was born August 23, 1919 in Rushville, a daughter of the late Earl and Ruth (Kelly) Gard.
Mrs. Thurston was a graduate of Rushville High School and a 1945 graduate of St. Vincent’s Hospital School of Nursing. She retired from Henry County Memorial Hospital in New Castle where she was employed as a registered nurse.
Survivors include two sons, Kenneth Allen (wife Patricia) Thurston of Indianapolis, and David A. Thurston of New Castle; one daughter, Dana (husband Steve) Daffron of New Castle; two sisters, Christine Jones of Knightstown, and Rose Mary (husband William) Clarke of Indianapolis; five grandchildren, Patrick Thurston, Jennifer Sandual, Mathew and Megan Daffron and Jeff Thurston; and four great-grandchildren.
A brother, one sister and one grandchild preceded her in death.
A funeral mass will be held at 10 a.m. on Monday, December 10 at St. Rose Catholic Church in Knightstown with Father Bill Ehalt officiating. Burial will follow in Glen Cove Cemetery.
Visitation was at the Todd Funeral Home, Butcher Chapel in Knightstown from 9-10 a.m., Monday, December 10.
