Gladys Marie Schaeffer
Aug. 12, 1916 – June 10, 2001
Gladys Marie Schaeffer, 84, of Knightstown, died Sunday, June 10 at Regency Place in Greenfield, after an extended illness.
She was born in Liberty on August 12, 1916, a daughter of Henry and Mary Lambert Langley. Gladys lived most of her life in the Knightstown area. Gladys was married to Cloyd “Big” Schaeffer Dec. 6, 1933 in Henry County and he died Nov. 27, 1957.
Survivors include four grandchildren: Johnna Perkins of Knightstown, Beth Ann (husband Donny) Gossett of West Virginia, Steve A. (wife Roxanna) Zimmerman of New Castle, Billy Zimmerman of Knightstown; 10 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren; one brother, Herschel Langley of Lewisville; and several nieces and nephews.
Also preceding her in death was one daughter, one son, one brother and four sisters.
Services will be held Thursday, June 14 at the Marshall & Erlewein Funeral Home in Lewisville with burial in Glen Cove Cemetery at Knightstown.
Visitation will be from 10 a.m. to time of services on Thursday at the funeral home.
Ora Louis Clayton
May 15, 1915 – June 10, 2001
Former Carthage resident, Ora Louis Clayton, 86, died June 10 in the University of Louisville Hospital. He was a resident of Pewee Valley, KY. He was born May 15, 1915 in Shelby County, a son of the late Embert and Goldie Clayton.
Mr. Clayton lived most of his life in Indianapolis but formerly lived in Carthage for 10 years. He was a retired teacher and coach for Washington Township School system in Indianapolis, a WW II veteran and a member of Allisonville Christian Church.
Survivors include his wife Martha of Pewee Valley, KY; one son, Gary L. Clayton of Virginia Beach, VA; one daughter, Trina K. Gordon-Marquardt of Pewee Valley, KY; five brothers, Roy F. Steffey, Belle chase, LA; Max Steffey, Fort Meyers Beach, FL, Ray Steffey, North Port, FL, Russell and Emil L. Steffey, both of Shelbyville; six grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
Services will be (today) Wednesday, June 13 at Carmony-Ewing Broadway Funeral Home in Shelbyville with Rev. Robert Riester. Burial will follow in Miller Cemetery in Shelby County.
Opal Elsie Flick
Apr. 27, 1901 – June 4, 2001
Opal Elsie Flick, 100, of Carthage, died Monday, June 4 at the Indiana Masonic Home in Franklin. She was born on April 27, 1901 in Ripley County, a daughter of the late George and Ella (Monroe) Robinson. On May 25, 1922, she married Fred Flick who preceded her in death on November 30, 1979.
Mrs. Flick was a retired schoolteacher who received her teacher’s training at Terre Haute and also at Hanover College. Her first teaching position in 1920 was in Ripley County in a one-room school, where she taught four students, three boys and one girl. She later taught at Dabney Elementary School, Holton Elementary School and Carthage Elementary School.
She established an early 4-H Club in Holton and a summer Bible School program at the Holton Christian Church. She was a member of the East Street Christian Church in Carthage, Versailles Eastern Star, Indiana State Retired Teachers’ Association and the Carthage Garden Club.
Survivors include one daughter, Elnora Louise (husband William) Castner, Zionsville; two sisters, Marie Ford, Indianapolis, and Lucille Hodge of Osgood; two grandchildren, Stephen L. (wife Kay) Castner of Wisconsin and Jennifer L. (husband Mark) Struhs of Chicago; and three great-grandchildren.
In addition to her husband, one brother and one sister preceded her in death.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, June 9 at the East Street Christian Church in Carthage with Rev. David Bonne officiating. Burial will be in Holton Cemetery in Holton.
Visitation will be at the church on Saturday from 9-11 a.m. Todd Funeral Home, Carthage Chapel, is in charge of arrangements.
Edna Marie Peebles
May 22, 1909 – May 30, 2001
Edna Marie Peebles, 92, died May 30 at Timbercrest Healthcare Center in Manchester.
She was born May 22, 1909 in Knightstown, a daughter of Harvey and Ethel (Collins) Hopkins.
Ms. Peebles was a 1926 graduate of Morristown High School, attended Central Normal College in Danville, Ball State Teachers College, Muncie, and graduated from Goshen College College. She received her masters degree from St. Francis College in Ft. Wayne.
She taught elementary school in Henry County, Wabash City Schools, Somerset and Lafontaine in Wabash County, and Syracuse and North Webster in Kosciusko County. She was a member of the Friends Church most of her life until moving to North Webster where she joined the North Webster Church of God. She loved music and studied and taught piano for several years, and served as pianist and organist in several churches. She had lived at Timbercrest Retirement Community since 1990.
Survivors include her sister, Naomi (husband Jack) Porter of Wabash, and several nieces and nephews.
Services were held at 10:30 a.m., Friday, June 1 in the Timbercrest Retirement Community Chapel, North Manchester with David Phillips officiating. Graveside services were held at 1:30 p.m. June 1 was in Glen Cove Cemetery, Knightstown. Grandstaff-Hentgen Funeral Service of Wabash was in charge of arrangements.
Memorials may be made to North Webster Church of God or Wabash Friends Church.
Loran Earl Young
July 2, 1933 – June 2, 2001
Loran Earl Young, 67, a resident of rural Greenfield and former resident of Shirley, died Saturday, June 2 at Hancock Memorial Hospital in Greenfield.
Mr. Young was born July 2, 1933 in Markleville, a son of the late Andrew Jackson and Tillie May (Reno) Young. He was a 30-year employee of Ford Motor Co. in Indianapolis retiring in June of 1991, and was former owner of the Broken Arrow Archery Shop in Shirley.
Survivors include his wife of 31 years, Anita (Friddle) Young of Greenfield; four daughters, Jean Potts, Pam (husband Jeff) Smith, Dawn (husband Mike) McDaniel, all of Greenfield, and Deanna (husband Jack, Schantz of New Palestine; one son, Colin (wife Donna) Young of Alexandria; one sister, Loretta Chambers of Pendleton; two brothers, Robert Young of Manning, SC, and Chester Young of Anderson; eight grandchildren, two great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, three brothers and a sister preceded him in death.
Services will be held at 10:30 Wednesday (today), June 6 at the Condo & Son Funeral Home in Wilkinson with Pat McDaniel officiating. Burial will follow in McCray Cemetery in Wilkinson.
Visitation was Tuesday, June 5 t the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Lung Association.
Harold A. Davis
Apr. 1918 – June 1, 2001
Harold A. Davis, 83, of Carthage, died Friday, June 1 at Community Hospital East in Indianapolis.
He was born on April 1, 1918 in Clay Township in Decatur County, a son of the late Ligonal Davis, Sr. and Ethel (Parks) Davis. On December 23, 1939, he married Alice (Pettit) Davis, who survives.
Mr. Davis was a retired farmer. He was a member of the Union Chapel Methodist Church, Rushville Eagles Lodge, Rush County Farm Bureau and was a retired member of the Carthage Volunteer Fire Dept.
Surviving besides his wife are three sons, Darrel (wife Anne) Davis, Palmetto, FL, Alvin (wife Doris) Davis, New Castle, and Carl Davis, Greenfield; three daughters, Martha A. West, Carthage, Kay (husband Dahl), Arlington, and Ruth (husband Jerry) May, Arlington; three brothers, John Davis, Greensburg, Wilbur Davis and Wilbur Davis, both of Greensburg, and Ligonal Davis, Jr. of Shelbyville; four sisters, Helen Wasson and Mable Mount, both of Greensburg, Norma Jean Massman, Oregon, and Ethel May Soroko of Indianapolis; 16 grandchildren and 25 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday (today), June 6 at 10 a.m. at the Todd Funeral Home, Carthage Chapel in Carthage with Rev. David Bonne and Rev. Roger Campbell officiating. Burial will be in East Hill Cemetery at Arlington.
Visitation was Tuesday, June 5 at the Todd Funeral Home.
Rose Marie Finch
Sept. 28, 1927 – May 31, 2001
Rose Marie Finch, 73, of New Castle and a former Carthage area resident, died Thursday, May 31, at Henry County Memorial Hospital in New Castle.
She was born Sept. 28, 1927, in Morristown, a daughter of the late James and Vera (Aker) Ramsey. She had been a nursing assistant at both Regency Place in Greenfield and the Morristown Manor prior to her retirement.
Survivors include two sons, George Finch, Goshen, and Jeff Finch of Shirley; six daughters, Janice Pearson, Paulding, OH, Judy (husband James) Moore, Carthage, Becky Cooper, Niles, MI, Joyce Finch, Lima, OH, Kathy Finch, Paulding, OH, and Julie Finch, Jackson, MI; one brother, George Ramsey, Kingsland; 25 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by her husband, Willie O. Finch on July 29, 1987, a son, two brothers and two sisters.
Funeral services were held Monday, June 4 at 1 p.m. at the Todd Funeral Home, Butcher Chapel in Knightstown with Rev. David Bonne officiating. Burial was in Asbury Cemetery at Morristown.
Visitation was Sunday, June 3 at the funeral home.
