Dallas L. Marshall
Apr. 13, 1930 – Mar. 15, 2001
Dallas L. Marshall, 70, a resident of Willow Branch, died March 15 at Community Hospital East in Indianapolis followed an extended illness. He was born April 13, 1930 in Hamilton County, the son of the late Murray and Bertha (Lennon) Marshall.
He retired from Western Electric Indianapolis after 32 years of service and was a member of the Telephone Pioneers of American. He was a graduate of Charlottesville High School and a member of the Willow Branch United Methodist Church.
Survivors include his brothers, Mahlon Marshall of Willow Branch, and Bob Marshall of Greenfield; two sisters, Fayola Leonard and Josephine Kostuck, both of Fortville; four nieces and three nephews.
Funeral services were held March 19 at the Condo & Son Funeral Home in Wilkinson with burial in Gravel Lawn Cemetery in Fortville. Visitation was Sunday, March 18 from 2-6 p.m.

Joseph E. Porter
Oct. 5, 1914 – Mar. 14, 2001
Joseph E. Porter, 85, of Carthage, died Wednesday, March 14 at his residence. Mr. Porter was born October 5, 1914 in Carthage, a son of the late John and Hattie (McClurg) Porter.
Porter was a 1933 graduate of Carthage High School and on June 29, 1946, married Lola Mae Rasor, who survives. He was a retired photographer and was employed by Hennington Studio.
The WW II veteran had a distinguished and decorated military career. He was a tech sergeant of a B-24 plane that was shot down over Normandy, France in April of 1944. He spent several months in the care and protection of the Free French Resistance. In the early 1960’s, he served as a consultant for the WW II movie, “The Longest Day.” He was later decorated with EAME (Air Medal) with three bronze stars, Good Conduct Medal and a Purple Heart.
Porter was a member of the Carthage Friends Meeting, the Knightstown American Legion and the Rush Lodge #580 F & AM.
Other survivors include two sons, Kittrel “Kit” Porter, Olympia, Wash., and Alvie Porter, Greenfield; six grandchildren and one great-grandchild. One brother preceded him in death.
Funeral services were held March 17 at the Todd Funeral Home, Carthage Chapel with Rev. Gene Lewis officiating. Burial was in Carthage Town Cemetery. Knightstown American Legion Post 152 conducted military rites.
Visitation was March 16 from 4-8 p.m. with Masonic services at 8 p.m.
Homer Bailey
Jan. 10, 1919 – Mar. 15, 2001
Homer Bailer, 82, died March 15 at Community Hospital in Anderson. Bailey, a resident of Middletown, graduated from Lewisville High School and worked for General Motors, retiring in 1974. He was born Jan. 10, 1919, a son of Emmett C. and Anna Whittington Bailey.
Survivors include his wife of 57 years, Arthela “Gerri”; two brothers, Floyd of Indianapolis, and Vernon (wife, Louise) Bailey of Indianapolis; three sisters-in-law, Lois Bailey of Dublin, Analee Bailey of Anderson and Betty Bailey of Spiceland.
Four brothers preceded him in death.
Services were held March 19 at Ballard and Sons Funeral Home Middletown Chapel with burial in Green Hills Memory Gardens in New Castle. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society or the American Heart Association.
Barbara Maxine Stinson
June 4, 1914 – Mar. 18, 2001
Barbara Maxine (Maple) Stinson, 86, Greenfield, died March 18 at Regency Place in Greenfield following an extended illness. She was born in Wilkinson June 4, 1914, a daughter of Walter and Jessie Maple, and lived in this area all of her life.
Mrs. Stinson and her husband owned and operated the Cozy Corner Restaurant in Markleville. She was also employed with Wm. H. Block Co. and Pierce Governor for several years. The 1932 graduate of Wilkinson High School was an avid needle pointer, IU basketball fan and had received national recognition for her penmanship.
One son, Jack Stinson of Markleville; one grandson, John Stinson III of Markleville; one sister, Patricia Snider of Greenfield; several nieces and nephews; and a special friend, Cindi Fox, survive her.
Her husband, Bennie Stinson who died July 5, 1966, two brothers and one sister, preceded Mrs. Stinson in death.
Services will be held Wednesday, March 21 at 10 a.m. at the Robert D. Loose Funeral Home, South Chapel, 200 W. 53rd St., Anderson. Burial will be in McCray Cemetery, Wilkinson. Visitation was from 4-8 p.m. Tuesday, March 20.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Indianapolis Museum of Art.
Jo Ann Weaver
Dec. 4, 1945 – Mar. 30, 2001
Jo Ann Weaver, 55, of Knightstown, died unexpectedly Tuesday, March 30 at Hancock Memorial Hospital in Greenfield. She was born December 4, 1945 in Pittsburgh, Penn., a daughter of the late John Imling and Lucille (Heidkamp) Imling Beech.
The Knightstown resident had been employed at Modernfold, Inc. for the past six years as an accounting clerk.
Survivors include her husband of 23 years, Ernie E. Weaver of Knightstown; a son, Douglas S. Weaver of Knightstown; a daughter, Malea E. Weaver of Knightstown; and a sister, Linda Stanley of Knightstown.
Services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, March 23 at Hinsey-Brown Funeral Home in New Castle with Father John Luerman officiating. Burial will be in Glen Cove Cemetery at Knightstown. Friends may call from 2-8 p.m. Thursday, March 22 and one hour prior to services at the funeral home.
Vernie L. Swinford
Oct. 30, 1912 – June 21, 2001
Vernie L. Swinford, 88, a resident of Okeechobee, Fla., died Thursday, June 21 at Okeechobee Hospital.
He was born Oct. 30, 1912, a son of the late George and Ida (McKinney) Swinford.
Mr. Swinford had lived the past 21 years in the Okeechobee area, but was a resident of Rush County most of his life. The graduate of Clarksburg High School was a retired farmer, having farmed in the Jackson Township area in Rush County for many years. He was a member of the Hannegan Christian Church and the Farm Bureau Co-op and also an avid fisherman.
Swinford married the Jeanne Butcher Swinford on November 14, 1988 and she died April 14 of this year. Survivors include one son, Vernie J. Swinford; one daughter, Betty (husband, Charlie) Levi of Decatur; a stepson, Jerry Butcher of Knightstown; a granddaughter, Laura (husband, Mark) Francesconi of LaPorte; one step-grandson, 3 great-grandchildren, 6 step-great-grandchildren and nieces and nephews.
Services were held at 10 a.m. on Monday, June 25 at Moster & Cox Mortuary in Rushville with Warren Engel presiding. Visitation was held Sunday, June 24 at the Mortuary. Burial was in the Hopewell Cemetery.
Memorial contributions can be made to the Charity of the donor’s choice.
Alice Marie Heim
May 6, 1924 – June 21, 2001
Alice Marie McNabb Heim, 77, died Thursday, June 21 at her residence in Bloomington. She was born May 6, 1924 in Potosi, Mo., the daughter of the late Jesse and Helen (Sparks) Essmyer. She was a homemaker and served as an Army nurse during World War II.
Survivors include her daughter, Melissa B. Starry of Bloomington; one son, Richard C. McNabb II of Sandwich, MA, and four grandchildren.
Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband Charles Heim in 1974 and a son David W. McNabb in 1999.
Private family services were held Tuesday, June 26 at Allen Funeral Home with Father Don Davison officiating. Visitation was on Monday, June 25 at the funeral home. Memorial contributions can be made to the American Heart Association or to Hospice of Bloomington.
