Weldon J. Stevens
July 2, 1924 – June 23, 2001
Weldon J. Stevens, 76, a resident of Lewisville and former resident of Wilkinson, died Saturday, June 23 at Henry County Memorial Hospital in New Castle, following a brief illness. He was born July 2, 1924 in Rush County, a son of the late Russell and Luva (Bowen) Stevens.
He retired from the Indiana State Highway Commission and was an office machine repairman. Stevens was an Army-Air Corp veteran of WW II and a member of the Center Christian Church near Mays.
He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Martha (Fordyce) Stevens; two sons, Robert (wife, Dianna) Stevens of Lynchburg, OH, and Donn (wife, Paula) Stevens of Lewisville; one daughter Connie (husband, David) Porter of Kennard; seven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren; and one sister, Leola Jordan of Knightstown.
An infant son, David Joseph Stevens and one infant brother, Curtis Bowen Stevens, preceded him in death.
Services were held Tuesday, June 26 at 11 a.m. in the Condo & Son Funeral Home with Bill Worrell of the Center Christian Church officiating. Burial was in Center Cemetery near Mays.
Visitation was held Monday, June 25 at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to the Center Christian Church.
Bonnie L. Phelps
June 11, 1927 – June 24, 2001
Shirley resident Bonnie L. Phelps, 74, died Sunday, June 24 in Hancock Memorial Hospital in Greenfield, following an extended illness. She was born June 11, 1927 in Pulaski County, KY, a daughter of the late Charles and Alta (Goodin) Mills. She was a lifelong homemaker.
Mrs. Phelps is survived by two daughters, Carol Sue Fogleman of Greenfield and Maude (husband, Guy) Snider of Shirley; one grandson, Aaron Snider and one granddaughter, Michelle Snider, both of Shirley; one brother, Linville Hughes of Somerset, KY; several nieces, nephews and aunts.
Her husband Elmer Phelps preceded her in death in 1964.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, June 27 at Condo & Son Funeral Home in Wilkinson with Jim Jackson, pastor of the Shirley Friends Church officiating. Burial will follow in McCray Cemetery, Wilkinson. Visitation was Tuesday, June 26 at the funeral home.
William Freddrick Glenn
Sept. 20, 1937 – June 27, 2001
William Freddrick Glenn, 63, of Knightstown, died Wednesday, June 27, at his residence. Mr. Glenn was born September 20, 1937 in Switzerland County, a son of the late William Loren and Roseanna Ethel (Walston) Glenn.
Glenn was retired from the Indiana State Highway Dept. where he had been employed as an equipment operator.
Survivors include his wife, the former Leeta Jane Fox, whom he married April 25, 1971; four sons, William Wayne of Titusville, Fla., Dale Edward of Smithville, Tenn., David Lee of Murfreesboro, Tenn., and Dustin Ryan of Knightstown; three daughters, Faith Elaine McAllister, New Smyrna Beach, Fla., Diane Elizabeth Denauro, Edgewater, Fla., and Kelley Jane Glenn, Knightstown; three brothers, Russell Walston of Rising Sun, Robert Dale Glenn of Delphi and David Wayne Glenn of Knightstown; three sisters, Geneva (husband, Lee) Courtney of West Harrison, Edith Marie Wickham, Okeechobee, Fla., and Brenda (husband, Leonard) Wright of Eagle River, Alaska; 10 grandchildren including Tyler Glenn of Knightstown and three great-grandchildren.
One brother and one grandchild also preceded him in death.
Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, June 30 at the Todd Funeral Home, Butcher Chapel, with Rev. Mervin Kilmer officiating. Burial will follow in Glen Cove Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 4-8 p.m. Friday, June 29 at the funeral home.
Eric D. Cleek
Aug. 31, 1960 – June 26, 2001
Eric D. Cleek, 40, of Indianapolis and former resident of Shirley, died Tuesday, June 26 at Community North Hospital in Indianapolis. He was born August 31, 1960 in Anderson, the son of Frankie R. and Eleanor L. (Kiser) Cleek of Shirley.
Cleek was a 1978 graduate of Knightstown High School and attended Indiana University of Bloomington. He was a meat cutter for Marsh Foods of Indianapolis for the past 11 years. He is an Eagle Scout.
Surviving besides his parents are one sister, Tina (husband, David) Madden of Westerville, Ohio; two nieces, one nephew, several aunt, uncles and cousins.
Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, June 30 at the Condo and Son Funeral Home in Wilkinson with Richard White officiating. Burial will follow in McCray Cemetery.
Visitation will be Friday, June 29 from 4-9 p.m. at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to the Lion’s Eye Bank or the donor’s choice.
Robert A. Hayworth
Nov. 2, 1927 – June 27, 2001
Robert A. Hayworth, 73, of rural Lewisville, died Wednesday, June 27 at his residence after a brief illness. He was born Nov. 2, 1927, in Shelby County, a son of Marcus O. and Joanna L. Johnson Hayworth.
A graduate of Lewisville High School, he lived most of his life in Lewisville. Hayworth was a WW II Army veteran. He retired in 1980 from Dana Corp. in Rushville after 20 years of service. He retired in this year from South Henry School Corp. after 17 years of service. Hayworth was a member of the National Rifle Association, the Wake Riders boat Club and former member of New Castle Moose Lodge.
He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Norma Jean, whom he married August 4, 1950; two sons, Robert E. of New Castle and Marcus L. (wife, Patty) of Lewisville; a daughter, Rita Jane (husband, Rob) Herbert of Anderson; 10 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; a sister Marjory Shepherd of New Castle; and nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Bill.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, June 30, with Donald Day officiating. Burial will be in Lewisville Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 4-8 p.m. Friday, June 29, at the funeral home and prior to services on Saturday. Military graveside services will be conducted by American Legion Post 152 of Knightstown. Memorial contributions may be made to the Henry County Cancer Society.
Fairly Conley
Jan. 9., 1919 – June 30, 2001
Fairly Conley, 82, of New Castle and former resident of Carthage, died Saturday, June 30 at the VA Medical Center in Indianapolis. He was born in Lewis County, Ky. on January 9, 1919, a son of the late Huston and Lucy (Butler) Conley.
Mr. Conley was an U.S. Army Veteran and a member of the Lewisville Church of God. He was a retired construction worker and had been employed by Hunt Paving Company in Indianapolis.
On July 27, 1940, he married Thelma Jane Logan who preceded him in death on August 24, 1994. In 1995, Conley married Fay Smith who survives.
Also surviving are two sons, Brad Conley of Knightstown and Carlos Conley of Olive Hill, Ky.; eight grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren.
His first wife, six brothers, two sisters and one great-grandchild preceded him in death.
Services for Mr. Conley were held Tuesday, July 3 at the Todd Funeral Home, Butcher Chapel in Knightstown. Burial was in the Carthage Town Cemetery.
Visitation was Monday, July 2 at the funeral home.
W. Loren Lee
Sept. 16, 1916 – July 6, 2001
Former resident of the Carthage-Charlottesville area, W. Loren Lee, 84, of Martinsville, died Thursday, July 6 at Miller’s Merry Manor in Mooresville.
He was born Sept. 16, 1916, in Rush County, a son of Wilbur E. Lee and Mamie Barnes Lee. During WW II, he served in the Army Air Corps. On August. 31, 1946, he married Betty McDaniel, who survives. He farmed for most of his life near Charlottesville and was employed by Chrysler in Indianapolis, retiring in 1981. He was a member of the Charlottesville Christian Church and the United Auto Workers.
Survivors, in addition to his wife, are a son, Charles Robert Lee of Greenwood; a daughter, Debra (husband, Jerry) Starling of Fort Wayne; a brother, Wayne Lee of Jeffersonville; four grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
Services were held Monday at the Todd Funeral Home in Knightstown with Rev. Stanley Icenogle officiating with burial in The Rushville East Hill Cemetery.
Visitation was Sunday, July 8 at the funeral home.
