Grace “Lee” Vaughn

Grace “Lee” Vaughn, 57, of Knightstown, died Wednesday, September 5 at Community Hospital East in Indianapolis. She was born in Pensacola, Fla. on February 14, 1944, and a daughter of the late Charles W. and Ella Mae (Burton) Cline, who survives.
Mrs. Vaughn was a graduate of Morton Memorial High School and married Marvin Eugene Vaughn on June 17, 1967. She was employed as a clerk by the Knightstown Utilities.
Other survivors with her husband and mother are three daughters, Sherry Pickett, Indianapolis, Shannon (husband, Matt) Young of Indianapolis, and Jessica Vaughn of Knightstown; three stepsons, Marshall of Carthage, Danny Vaughn, Greenfield and Jerry Vaughn of Indianapolis; four sisters, Darlene, Linda, Donna and Glenda Sue; four brothers, Charlie Cline of Lapel, Jimmy Cline of Fountain City, Dickie Cline of Greensburg, and Steve Townsend of Indianapolis; four grandchildren, eight step-grandchildren, two great-grandchildren and 10 step-great-grandchildren.
Services were held Monday, September 10 at 10 a.m. at the Todd Funeral Home, Butcher Chapel with Clinton Powell officiating. Burial was in Glen Cove Cemetery. Visitation was Sunday, September 9 at the funeral home.
Roberta Ruth Dalrymple
Aug. 28, 1925 – Sept. 7, 2001
Roberta Ruth Dalrymple, 76, of Rushville, died Friday, September 7 at Rush Memorial Hospital in Rushville. She was born August 28, 1925, a daughter of the late Howard Hinshaw and Martha (Dewese) Hinshaw.
Mrs. Dalrymple had lived in Rush County since 1955. She was a member of the Carthage Friends Church, a past member of the Posey Township Home Ec. Club and was a State 4-H coordinator for the Charlois Association. She graduated from Olney Boarding School with the class of 1943. She married James R. Dalrymple Nov. 24, 1955 (Thanksgiving Day) and he died Oct. 24, 2000.
Survivors include twin sons, Phillip Dalrymple of Rushville and Ronnie Dalrymple of Indianapolis; two daughters, Brenda Gasser of Springport, and Donnie (husband, Dwain) Dearinger of Westfield; one brother, Chester Hinshaw of Sebring, Fla.; three sisters, Norma (husband, Donald) Atchinson of Salem, Ohio, Mary Ann (husband, Robert) Walton of Winona, Ohio; and Kathy (husband, Leroy) Holloway, Winter Park, Fla.; six grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
Services were held Monday, September 10 at the Moster & Cox Funeral Home in Rushville. Burial was in the East Hill Shrine Mausoleum, Rushville.
Visitation was Sunday, September 9 at the funeral home. The family requested that memorial contributions be made to the Carthage Friends Church and/or the Arlington Volunteer Fire Department.
Warren Wesley Gorman
May 11, 1936 – Sept. 15, 2001
Warren Wesley (Wes) Gorman, 65, Knightstown, died Saturday, September 15, at Veterans Hospital in Indianapolis. He was born May 11, 1936, a son of Robert and Ollie J. (Hamm) Gorman in Knightstown.
On December 31, 1979, he married Darlene Carol Peck and she survives. He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy and worked as a guard at Pendleton Reformatory. He was a member of the Knightstown United Methodist Church, Knightstown American Legion Post 152 and the Knightstown Masonic Lodge.
Other survivors with his wife are three sons, Tony Gorman of Virginia, David (daughter, Kelli) Parham and Kenneth Parham, both of Greenwood; two daughters, Jomyla Anderson of Virginia, Sheri Bowling, Knightstown and Lorretta (husband, Steve) Land of Carthage; one sister, Juanita (husband, Robert) Messick of Knightstown; 11 grandchildren, one great-grandchild and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, one son, three brothers and two sisters.
Services were held Tuesday, September 18 at the Todd Funeral Home, Butcher Chapel, Knightstown with Pastor Steve Brackney officiating. Burial will be in Glen Cove Cemetery.
Visitation was on Monday, September 17 at the funeral home.
Chris Brian Bitler
March 11, 1947 – Sept. 13, 2001
Chris Brian Bitler, 54, of Kentland died Thursday, September 13 at Jasper County Hospital in Rensselaer. He was born March 11, 1947 in New Castle, a son of George Robert and Betty Lou Cooper Bitler.
Mr. Bitler was a 1965 graduate of Spiceland High School and Purdue University where he received a bachelor’s degree in agricultural science and a master’s degree in agricultural education. He was a member of Alpha Zeta and Ceries fraternities at Purdue. In the spring of 1969, he began his career in the Cooperative Extension Services of Purdue University as a youth agent in Morgan County. He served as Newton County Agricultural Educator for Purdue University where he was involved in the water quality team, land-use committee, the president of Step Ahead for seven years and planning commission for 25 years. He taught master gardening and pesticide training. Chris was a member of the Newton County Fair Board for 25 years. He was nationally recognized by his peers and in San Antonio, Texas, he received the Distinguished Service Award.
Bitler was a Rotarian and past president and Paul Harris Fellow of the rotary Club in Kentland. He coached PeeWee and Little League baseball and was past president of the Little League Assoc. He worked for Purdue for 32 years, 25 of those in Newton County. He was a member of the John Purdue Club and a member of Covenant Federated Church of Kentland.
In addition to his father of Knightstown, he is survived by his wife, the former Marjorie Ann Cunningham, who he married in 1972; a son Jeffery Allen of Kentland; two daughters, Heather Ann of Lafayette and Sarah Elizabeth of Kentucky.
His mother and a brother, Robert Kent, and his grandparents preceded him in death.
Services were held Sunday, September 16 at Covenant Federated Church of Kentland with Rev. Robert Sherman officiating. Burial was in Fairlawn Cemetery.
Visitation was held Saturday, September 15 at McMullan-Stitz Funeral Home in Kentland.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Covenant Federated Church and the American Cancer Society.
Mona L. Couch
June 23, 1917 – Sept. 12, 2001
Mona L. Couch, 84, Knightstown, died Wednesday, September 12 at Brandywine Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Greenfield. She was born June 23, 1917 in Stacy Forde, Ky., a daughter of the late William Clinton and Mariah E. (Steele) Haney.
On August 22, 1936, she married Valva Couch who preceded her in death on January 15, 1997. Mrs. Couch was a retired seamstress having been employed by Indiana Rayon in Greenfield. She was a member of the Knightstown Church of God.
Survivors include one son, Luther (wife Myla) Couch, Fishers; two daughters, Freda Beatty of Knightstown and Irene (husband, Clifford) Smith of New Castle; two brothers, J. Clinton Haney of Georgia, and Walker Haney of New Castle; four sisters, Irene Downs, Mt. Sterling, Ky., Nancy Gillam, Anderson, Frances Egan, Florida and Grace Carter, Ft. Wayne; eight grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by one son, two brothers, one sister and one great-grandchild.
Services were held Saturday, September 15 at the Todd Funeral Home, Butcher Chapel in Knightstown with Phillip Morgan officiating. Burial was in Glen Cove Cemetery.
Visitation was held Friday, September 14 at the funeral home.
Philip A. Rhodes
Apr. 13, 1928-Sept. 9, 2001
Knightstown native, Philip A. Rhodes, 73, died Sunday, September 9 at his residence in Bloomfield, Kent. He was born April 13, 1928.
He was a U.S. Army WW II veteran and a member of the American Legion. He retired from Chrysler Corp. and was a member of the Methodist Church.
He is survived by his wife, the former Marjorie Cooley of Bloomfield; a daughter, Janice Garrett of Spiceland; two stepsons, Terry Butler of Rensselear, and Daniel Butler of Indianapolis; two brothers, Myron of Little Rock, Ark., and Jerry of West Palm Beach, Fla.; a grandchild; and two step-grandchildren.
A memorial service was held Saturday, September 15 at the Circle Grove Cemetery in Spiceland. Memorial Houghlin Funeral Home of Bloomfield, Ky., handled arrangements.
James William Knight
Dec. 6, 1928 – Sept. 11, 2001
James William Knight, 72, of Advance, died Tuesday, September 11, at Witham Memorial Hospital in Lebanon. He grew up in eastern Tennessee. He was born December 6, 1928 in Dayton, Oho, a son of Delbert Adam and Anna Mae Gentry Knight.
Mr. Knight was a U.S. Army veteran, serving in Japan from 1946-49. A resident in Indianapolis until 1967, he worked for Indianapolis Power & Light and the N & W Railroad and Western Electric Installation for 26 years, retiring in 1982. He then contracted work reclaiming metals for the Chinese Government and installed communication systems with his son, Michael. He was a member of St. Peter’s Episcopal Church in Lebanon and Hazelrigg Lodge 200 F&AM.
He is survived by his wife, the former Doloris Ann Johnson LaCombe from Knightstown, whom he married November 16, 1981; a brother, one brother, three sisters, a half-sister and three grandchildren.
Services were held Saturday, September 15 in Lebanon. Burial was in Glen Cove Cemetery in Knightstown with military graveside rites.
