Maxine E. Titus
Oct. 30, 1914 – Sept. 20, 2001
Maxine E. Titus, 86, a resident of Greenfield, died Thursday, September 20 at Hancock Memorial Hospital in Greenfield.
She was born October 30, 1914 in Knightstown, a daughter of the late Russell and Pearl (Paddock) Wilson. Maxine was a member of the Eden United Methodist Church, a 50-year member of the Eden Order of the Eastern Star and had worked for George Thomas Florist of Greenfield.
Survivors include two daughters, Nancy Holt and Carolyn Moran; one son, Gerald E. Titus, eight grandchildren and five great-grandchildren, all of Greenfield.
Her husband, Hiram R. Titus, preceded her in death on April 29, 1996.
Services were held Saturday, September 22 at the Condo & Son Funeral Home in Wilkinson with burial in McCray Cemetery. Visitation was Friday, September 21 at the funeral home.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Eden United Methodist Church.
Jama L. Jordan
Feb. 26, 1979 – Sept. 22, 2001
Jama L. Jordan died Saturday, September 22 at her residence in Anderson. She was born February 26, 1979 in Anderson, the daughter of James and Linda (Merchant) Jordan of Anderson.
Jama, a lifelong resident of Anderson, was in training as a home care assistant for Visiting Nurse and More of Anderson. She was a graduate of Highland High School Class of 1997 and a member of Psi Iota Xi Sorority.
Besides her parents, she is survived by one brother, Kyle Jordan of Middletown; maternal grandparents, Lewis and Evelyn Merchant of Knightstown; paternal grandparent, Eva Garhart of Anderson; great-grandparents, Glenn Mattix of Knightstown and Jeannette Mattix of Greenfield; and an aunt and uncle, Jim and Jeannie Keith of Cape Coral, Fla.
She was preceded in death by her grandfather, Richard Jordan in 1964, and a cousin, Scott Reece in 1998.
Services will be Thursday, September 27 at 10 a.m. in the Robert D. Loose Funeral Home South Chapel, 200 West 53rd St., Anderson, with Amy Terrell of the South Meridian Church of God officiating. Burial will be in Glen Cove Cemetery in Knightstown.
Visitation will be from 4-8 p.m. today (Wednesday) at the funeral home.

Thelma Jean Proctor
April 26, 1922 – Oct. 1, 2001
Thelma Jean Proctor, 79, died Monday, October 1 at Rush Memorial Hospital in Rushville. She was born April 26, 1922 in Wayne County, a daughter of the late William and Edith (Davis) Brumfield.
Thelma had lived in Rush County most of her life and had lived in Gwynneville since 1990. She was a 1941 graduate of Raleigh High School. She was a homemaker but had also worked at Guide Lamp in Anderson as well as at a real estate office in Knightstown.
She married Allen P. Proctor, Jr. on December 8, 1946 and he preceded her in death May 12, 1996.
Survivors include three sons, James W. Proctor, Glastonbury, CT, John J. (wife, Laura) Proctor, Morristown, and Joe A. Proctor, New Castle; one daughter, Nancy (husband, Ken) Simpson, Morristown; three sisters, Betty (husband, Bill) Waltz, Hagerstown, Janice (husband, Bob) Wooldridge, Arlington, and Patty (husband Richard) Coffman, Lewisville; seven grandchildren, Joshua Proctor, Chicago, Jacob Proctor, Glastonbury, CT, Megan Proctor, Morristown, and Justin, Jordan, Jade and Jarret Proctor, all of New Castle.
Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by on son, Bruce in 1951, a granddaughter, Julie in 1992, a daughter-in-law Connie Proctor in 2000, and two brothers, Wayne and Harold Brumfield.
Services will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, October 5 at the Moster & Cox Mortuary with Rex E. Kemple officiating. Burial will be in the Glen Cove Cemetery, Knightstown.
Visitation will be from 4-8 p.m. on Thursday, October 4 at the funeral home.
The family requests that memorial contributions be made to the ALS Association (Lou Gehrig’s Disease).
Crystal Frances McShurley
Sept. 9, 1907 – Sept. 27, 2001
Crystal Frances McShurley, 94, of Knightstown, died Thursday, September 27 at Hancock Memorial Hospital in Greenfield. She was born September 9, 1907 in Cadiz, a daughter of Ora and Fay (Huff) McShurley.
Miss McShurley graduated from Center High School in Rush County. She attended Madame Blaker’s in Indianapolis for one year and then began her teaching career. During this time she earned a Bachelor’s and a Master’s degrees from Ball State University. Most of her 46-year career was spent teaching 5th and 6th grades in the Knightstown Elementary School. Early in her teaching career she had taught at Mays and Richmond Schools. She retired in 1973 from active teaching but did substitute for four more years at KES.
She was a faithful member of the Knightstown United Methodist Church, a member of KUMC Martha Circle, Tri Kappa Sorority, a 75-year member of the Order of Easter Star #54 and a member of the Knightstown Historical Society.
She is survived by a nephew, Steve Ramsey of Indianapolis, whom she cared for in her home following the death of his mother, Georgeann Ramsey in 1973; a brother, Eugene McShurley of Rosemound, Texas, formerly of Oxnard, Calif.; a sister-in-law, Virginia McShurley of Laguna Hills, Calif. and several other nephews and nieces.
Besides her parents and sister, she was preceded in death by two brothers, Joseph and Robert McShurley. Graveside services were held Saturday, September 29 at 11 a.m. at Glen Cove Cemetery. Todd Funeral Home, Butcher Chapel in Knightstown was in charge of arrangements.
Memorials may be made to the Knightstown High School Alumni Association or the Knightstown United Methodist Church.
A special Memorial Service will be held for Crystal McShurley on Sunday, October 6 at 2 p.m. at the Knightstown United Methodist Church. All family and friends are invited to attend the service and will have the opportunity to “honor” Miss McShurley with comments.
Geraldine V. Goldey
Sept. 24, 1916 – Sept. 29, 2001
Geraldine V. Goldey, 85, a resident of Knightstown, died Friday, September 29 at the Brandywine Manor Nursing Home in Greenfield, following an illness of several months. She was born September 24, 1916 in Greensboro, a daughter of Orval and Ida Sheppard Williams.
Mrs. Goldey had resided in Greensboro and Knightstown all of her life. She was a homemaker and a member of the Greensboro Methodist Church as well as the women’s society of the church.
Survivors include two sisters, Elizabeth (husband, Keith) Garner of Greensboro, and Jean (husband, Glen) Starbuck of Kennard; several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Elmer Goldey; a sister, Fannie “Sis” Levi; and three brothers, Clark Williams, Herbert “Peal” Williams, and Basil “Hewp” Williams.
Services were held Monday, October 1 at Macer-Hall Funeral Home with Rev. James Williams officiating. Burial will be in Hicksite Cemetery, Greensboro.
Visitation was Sunday, September 30 at the funeral home.
John C. Sandlin
Oct. 24, 1906 – Sept. 25, 2001
John C. Sandlin, 94, of Knightstown, died Tuesday, September 25 at Hickory Creek in New Castle after an extended illness. He was born October 24, 1906 in Breathitt County, Ky., to the late Asbury and America (Miller) Sandlin.
Mr. Sandlin attended the Carthage Nazarene Church for many years. He retired from Chrysler Corp. in 1968 after 30 years of service and was a member of UAW Local #371. John, whose nickname was “Buttercup”, was a longtime Knightstown basketball fan and had received the “most loyal fan” award.
Survivors include his wife of 71 years, Verdis (Riley) Sandlin of Knightstown; two daughters, Geneva (husband, Robert) Galyen of New Castle, and Jeri (husband, John) Springman of Carthage; seven grandchildren, Carolyn Sue Barnett, Robert Galyen, Jr., Jeffrey Galyen, Teresa Dulin, John Springman, Jr., Deborah Springman and Tina Drew; 10 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; one brother, Elmer Sandlin of Scipio; one sister, Eva Canfield of Burkesville, Ky.; a half-sister, Wanda Wilson of North Vernon; two half-brothers, Jack and Michael Sandlin, both of Hayden; and several nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by three sisters, Anna Carmack, Maude Casson and Georgia Sandlin; a brother, Norman Sandlin; and infant siblings, Robert, Prudy and Alex.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m., Saturday, September 29 at Hinsey-Brown Funeral Home with Rev. Gene Bennett officiating. Burial was in Glen Cove Cemetery, Knightstown. Visitation was held from 10 a.m. until time of service on Saturday.
Anna F. Walker-Holliday
July 9, 1909 – Sept. 26, 2001
Anna F. Walker-Holliday, 92, a former resident of Greenfield, died Wednesday, September 26. She was born July 9, 1909 in Hancock County, the daughter of the late Harry and Nancy (Smith) Wilfong.
Mrs. Walker-Holliday retired from A & P of Greenfield after 15 years of service. She was a member of the Eden Order of Eastern Star #101 and the Fourth Christian Science Church in Indianapolis.
Survivors include two sons, Glen (wife,Wanda) Walker of Falmouth, and Max (wife, Ileen) Walker of Clayton; four stepsons, Marion Holliday of Warrington, Gene Holliday of rural Greenfield, Paul Holliday Jr. of rural Charlottesville and Steve Holliday of Indianapolis; three stepdaughters, Mary Ruth Barnhart, Sue Holmes and Linda Hodges, all of Greenfield; six grandchildren, several step-grandchildren, great-grand-children and great-great-grand-children.
Preceding her in death were two husbands, Robert Avery Walker and Paul B. Holliday, and a daughter, Nancy Thomas Griggs.
Funeral services were held Saturday, September 29 in the Condo & Son Funeral Home in Wilkinson with Judge William T. Sharp officiating. Burial was in McCray Cemetery in Wilkinson.
Visitation was at the funeral home Friday, September 28.
