Bertha Huff

Nov. 2, 1926 - July 31, 2009

Bertha Huff, 82, of Shirley, died July 31 at Hancock Regional Hospital in Greenfield.

She was born Nov. 2, 1926, in Boyd County, Ky., a daughter of the late Acie and Hattie (Bellamy) Runyon.

Mrs. Huff was a member of Fortville Church of the Nazarene. She was known as an avid reader who enjoyed spending time with her family and grandchildren. She also enjoyed gardening, cooking and watching Bill Gaither videos.

Survivors include her husband, Arvel Huff of Shirley; two sons, Rev. David (wife, Rachel) Huff of Shirley and Michael (wife, Jean) Huff of Wilkinson; a daughter, Jana (husband, Lynn) Shaw of Nashville; five grandchildren, David Wayne Huff of Rockton, Ill., Thomas Allen Huff of Greenfield, Christopher M. Huff of Zanesville, Ohio, Sarah Shaw of Bloomington and Zachary Shaw of Nashville; five great-grandchildren; two brothers, Delbert and Richard Runyon; four sisters, Amelia Wiley, Louise Reffitt, Catherine Sarks and Barbara Young; and several nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by two brothers, Ralph Runyon and Acie Runyon, Jr.; and a sister, Agusta Marcum.

Funeral services were August 4 at Fortville Church of the Nazarene with Revs. Phil Edwards and Gene Bennett officiating. Burial followed at McCray Cemetery in Wilkinson. Visitation was at the church one hour prior to services and August 3 at Condo & Son Funeral Home in Wilkinson.

Donald G. Ward

Apr. 19, 1934 - Aug. 2, 2009

Donald G. Ward, 75, of New Castle, died August 2 at The Waters of New Castle.

He was born April 19, 1934, a son of the late Lewis and Allie L. (Smith) Ward.

Mr. Ward attended New Castle High School. He worked for Firestone in New Castle and Decatur, Ill. He also worked at Brooks Foods in Mt. Summit.

Survivors include his son, Chris G. Ward of Westfield; a daughter, Deborah E. Ward of New Castle; 11 grandchildren, Lindsay Couch, Wendee Pickett, Jessica Downs, Cory Ward, Donnell Boykin and Jessica, Damien, Derek, Mitch, Dylan and Jo Ellen Ward; and nine great-grandchildren.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Milford Holmes.

Funeral services are at 8 p.m. Wednesday, August 5, at Hinsey-Brown Funeral Service in New Castle. Cremation will follow. Visitation is August 5 from 6 p.m. until time of services.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Henry County Heart Society.

John M. Wallick

Dec. 6, 1940 - Aug. 3, 2009

John M. Wallick, 68, of New Castle, died August 3 in Indianapolis.

He was born Dec. 6, 1940, in Ecorse, Mich., a son of the late John E. and Virginia (Stokes) Wallick.

Mr. Wallick was an active member of New Castle Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witness. He enjoyed golfing, debating and reading. He also enjoyed spending time with his family.

Survivors include his wife, Jeneva (Clements) Wallick of New Castle; three sons, George (wife, Pam) Wood of Indianapolis, Michael (wife, Karen) Wallick of Indianapolis and Gregory (wife, Susie) Wallick of Colorado; five daughters, Deborah Wallick of Colorado, Jennifer (husband, Kevin) Budke of Georgia, Virginia Crowell of Arizona, JoAnna (husband, Keith) Wall of New Castle and Jeanvieve Wallick of New Castle; 24 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; a brother, James (wife, Jan) Wallick of Indianapolis; three sisters, Janice Whitton of Indianapolis, Janine Wallick of Indianapolis and Jeanette Meeks of California; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Funeral services are at 2 p.m. Saturday, August 8, at New Castle Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witness. Hinsey-Brown Funeral Service in Knightstown is handling arrangements.

Gene R. Wilkinson

May 26, 1922 - July 23, 2009

Gene R. Wilkinson, 87, of Markleville, died Juy 23.

He was born May 26, 1922, in Henry County, a son of the late Ayne and Zella (Estell) Wilkinson.

Mr. Wilkinson was a lifelong farmer and co-owner of Wilkinson Implement in Knightstown. As a first lieutenant in the 450th Army Air Corps, he flew on 51 missions as a navigator and received the Distinguished Flying Cross and the Air Medal with Oak Leaf Clusters. Mr. Wilkinson’s plane was shot down three times and on one occasion eluded captors for a month after being harbored by the Yugoslavian Partisan Resistance. A Cadiz High School and Purdue University graduate, he was a member of Alpha Gamma Rho fraternity.

Survivors include his wife, Virginia Wilkinson of Markleville; two sons, Bill Wilkinson of Muncie and Robert Wilkinson of Troy, Mich.; a daughter, Karla (husband, Gene) Lipp of Longmont, Colo.; two grandchildren, Jennifer Lyons and Nathan Lipp; a brother, Tom (wife, Marjorie) Wilkinson of Knightstown; a sister, Jane Gwinn of Lapel; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were July 27 at Condo & Son Funeral Home in Wilkinson with Matt Shelton officiating. Burial followed at Mechanicsburg Cemetery. Full military graveside rites were conducted by Knightstown American Legion Post 152. Visitation was July 26 at the funeral home.

Memorial contributions may be made to Knightstown American Legion Post 152.

Billy Ray Roberts

Mar. 6, 1955 - July 26, 2009

Billy Ray Roberts, 54, of Wilkinson, died July 16.

He was born March 6, 1955, in Douglas, Ariz., a son of Carol (Dodge) Roberts and the late Billy T.K. Roberts.

Mr. Roberts was a supervisor for Builders Concrete in Noblesville. He was an avid Harley Davidson motorcycles fan and a rider. He spent many hours riding with his wife, Frances, and friends. Mr. Roberts was also an avid fisherman. His favorite pass time was spending time with his family.

Survivors include his wife, Frances Roberts of Wilkinson; three daughters, Casey Lee and Abigale Page Roberts of Wilkinson, and Amy Marie Roberts Porch of San Bernardino, Cal.; a son, Billy Ray Roberts II of San Bernardino, Cal.; three brothers, Lee (wife, Kimberly) Roberts of Wilkinson, Ken Roberts and William Roberts of San Bernardino, Cal.; two sisters, Vena Robinson and Cindy Roberts, both of San Bernardino; his mother, Carole Ann Roberts of San Bernardino; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were July 21 at Condo & Son Funeral Home in Wilkinson with Pastor Bill Roberts officiating. Visitation was prior to funeral services on July 21 at the funeral home.

Joy Bussberg

Jan. 22, 1961 - July 17, 2009

Joy (Knotts) Bussberg, 48, of Lewisville, died July 17 at her home.

She was born Jan. 22, 1961, in Henry County, a daughter of Benjamin and Ruth (Beam) Knotts.

Mrs. Bussberg was a 1980 Tri High School graduate and a member of Spiceland Friends Meeting. She was known as a friendly, outgoing person who enjoyed being a homemaker. She enjoyed crafts as a hobby and was a member of the Cornfield Cloggers and Lewisville Order of the Eastern Star #463. For the past 10 years, she was employed as a part-time clerk at GasAmerica in Knightstown.

Survivors include her husband, Terry Bussberg; four children, Amy (husband, Darrel) Wilson of Lebanon, Terry "Bussy" Bussberg of Arlington, Bradley (wife, Jen) Bussberg of Knightstown and Tyler Bussberg of Lewisville; five grandchildren, Christian and Natalie Wilson, Trey Bussbert and Alisa and Kegan Bussberg; her mother, Ruth Knotts of Knightstown; a brother, Jay (wife, Cathy) Knotts of Knightstown; two sisters, Ginny Heiser of Indianapolis and Janice Radcliff of Knightstown; and several aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were July 22 at Sproles Family Funeral Home in New Castle with Pastor Cathy Harris officiating. Burial followed at Shiloh Cemetery in Rush County. Visitation, along with Eastern Star memorial services, was July 21 at the funeral home.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Central Indiana Cancer Center.

Ralph Beyers

Sep. 3, 1917 - July 18, 2009

Ralph Beyers, 91, of Greenfield, died July 18 at Hancock Regional Hospital in Greenfield.

He was born Sept. 3, 1917, in Marion County, a son of the late Joe and Lottie (Carmichael) Beyers.

Mr. Beyers was a 1935 Worthington High School graduate. He worked for Standard Locknut and Lockwasher in Carmel and Greenfield, where he served as plant manager. He retired in 1982. Mr. Beyers was also a farmer and one of the founders of the Greenfield Farmers Market. A member of Shiloh Christian Church, he was a Sunday school teacher, deacon and elder emeritus. Mr. Beyers served in the U.S. Army in 1945 and was a member of Greenfield American Legion Post 119 and Bible Study Fellowship. In 2008, Mr. Beyers was recognized as an honorary citizen of Boys Town.

Survivors include his wife, Jessie (Smith) Myers Beyers of Greenfield; seven children, Rita L. (husband, David) Dodd of Fishers, Roger L. (wife, Glendora) Beyers of Greenfield, Joe E. (wife, Marjorie) Beyers of Charlottesville, John D. (wife, Elaine) Beyers of Evansville, James R. (wife, Charlew) Beyers of Knightstown, Ronald (wife, Alma) Myers of Fortville and David (wife, Diane) Myers; a brother, Otta Banton (wife, Dorthea) Beyers of Fortville; a sister-in-law, Georgina Beyers of Fortville; 16 grandchildren; 32 great-grandchildren; and five great-great-grandchildren.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife, Mary Kathryn (Wood) Beyers; four brothers, Rex, Herbert, Eugene and Joe Jr., Beyers; and a sister, Eunice Garsnett.

Funeral services are at 10 Friday, July 24, at Erlewein Mortuary in Greenfield. Burial with full military graveside rites will follow at Washington Park East Cemetery in Indianapolis. Visitation is 4-8 p.m. Thursday, July 23, at the funeral home.

Memorial contributions may be made to Shiloh Christian Church.
