Indiana Marriages, 1780-1992

Perry Gorman

Dec. 15, 1956 – Apr. 27, 2009

Perry Gorman, 52, of Wilkinson, died April 27 at his home.

He was born Dec. 15, 1956, in Rushville, a son of Emily “Boots” (Morgan) Gorman and the late Arnold Gorman.

Mr. Gorman was employed by United Telephone (now EMBARQ) for 33 years. An outdoorsman, he was an avid fisherman, hunter and beekeeper. He was known to some as the “Bee Man Perry Honey.” Mr. Gorman enjoyed working and enjoyed working on trucks. He was known as a kindhearted person who would help others in need. A family man, Mr. Gorman enjoyed spending time with his family. He was a member of Knightstown First Christian Church.

Survivors include his mother, Emily “Boots” Gorman of Knightstown; two sons, Jacob Gorman of Wilkinson and Austin Gorman of Knightstown; a brother, Jerry Gorman of Greenfield; a sister, Patty Paul of Knightstown; four nephews, Jeremy Gorman of Wilkinson, Dustin Gorman of Knightstown, Matthew May of Knightstown and Joseph May of Shelbyville; a step-nephew, Ethan Paul of Carthage; two great-nieces, Jasmine May of Shelbyville and Julianna May of Shelbyville; a great-nephew, Jordan May of Shelbyville; and several aunts and uncles.

In addition to his father, he was preceded in death by a son, James Anthony Gorman; a sister, Deborah Lynette Gorman; maternal grandparents, Frazier and Maude Morgan; and paternal grandparents, James and Margaret “Maggie” Gorman.

Funeral services are Friday, May 1, at 1 p.m. at Hinsey-Brown Funeral Service in Knightstown with Rev. Richard Thayer officiating. Burial will follow at Glen Cove Cemetery in Knightstown. Military graveside rites will be conducted by Knightstown American Legion Post 152. Visitation is 4-8 p.m. Thursday, April 30, at the funeral home.

Mildred L. Curtis

Mar. 7, 1923 – May 13, 2009

Mildred L. Curtis, 86, of Maxwell, died May 13 at Golden Living Center in Greenfield.

She was born March 7, 1923, in Knightstown, a daughter of the late George R. and Mary (Kender) Bowman.

Mrs. Curtis was a member of the Conservation Club and Eden Order of the Eastern Star #101. She was a homemaker and an avid bingo player.

Survivors include four daughters, Barbara A. Curtis and Deborah (husband, Ron) Martin, all of Greenfield, Janna S. (husband, Brian) Grubbs of Ludlow Falls, Ohio, and Tammi L. (husband, Daniel) Gassert of New Palestine; a son, Marion D. (wife, Judy) Curtis of New Palestine; a brother, George Bowman of Wisconsin; 11 grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Marion D. Curtis, Sr., and a great-grandchild, Vanessa Ann Reier.

Funeral services were May 18 at Stillinger Family Funeral Home with Pastor Sally Dickerson officiating. Burial followed at Park Cemetery in Greenfield; Visitation was two hours prior to services at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, 941 E. 86th St., Suite 100, Indianapolis, IN 46240-1842.

Tony E. Riley

Sep. 4, 1919 – May 17, 2009

Tony E. Riley, 89, of Shelbyville, died May 17 at Heritage House in Shelbyville.

He was born Sept. 4, 1919, in Lewis County, Ky., a son of the late Jack W. and Mary Jane (Richmond) Riley.

Mr. Riley was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, in which he served as a medical technician. He was an avid gardener and woodworker and was known as a passionate and hardworking gardener. He attended Carthage Church of the Nazarene.

Survivors include his wife, Olive (Spence) Riley of Shelbyville; a daughter, Janice Clark of Indianapolis; two grandsons, Rodney (wife, Terri) Fannin of Colorado and Boyd (wife, Jami) Fannin of Beech Grove; four great-grandchildren, Clay, Wyatt, Garrett and Baileigh Fannin; two step-great-grandchildren, Hannah and Dalton Perry; and several nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by four brothers and five sisters.

Funeral services are at 2 p.m. Friday, May 22, at Hinsey-Brown Funeral Service in Knightstown with Pastor Verlin Chip officiating. Military rites will be conducted and burial will take place at Riverside Cemetery in Carthage. Visitation is 4-8 p.m. Thursday, May 21, at the funeral home.

Shirley Ann Spegal

May 12, 1940 – May 17, 2009

Shirley Ann Spegal, 69, of Shirley, died May 17 at Hancock Regional Hospital in Greenfield.

She was born May 12, 1940, in Sturgeon, Ky., a daughter of the late Leslie and Hallie (Strong) Isaacs.

Survivors include her husband, Paul Hervey Spegal; four sons, Richard Marine and David (wife, Shelly) Spegal of Shirley, Roger (wife, Julia) Spegal of Hanover and Chad (wife, Lisa) Spegal of Cornell, Wis.; five daughters, Kim (husband, David) Bright, Penni (husband, Kelvin) Tutrow, Lori Bowling, Juli (Husband, Jim) Alberts of Shirley and Wendi (husband, Brian) Ratliff of Knightstown; two brothers, Eugene (wife, Rita) Isaacs of Pershing and Ron Isaacs of Carmel; a sister, Sharon (husband, Hobert) Fisher of Carmel; 16 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by three brothers, Woodrow, Richard and Herschel.

Funeral services were May 20 at Condo & Son Funeral Home in Wilkinson with Rev. Ryan McCarty officiating. Burial followed at McCray Cemetery in Wilkinson. Visitation was May 19 at the funeral home.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society.

Thomas Rodney Polley

Sep. 20, 1954 – May 20, 2009

Thomas Rodney Polley, 54, of Markleville, died May 20 at Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis.

He was born Sept. 20, 1954, in Greenfield, a son of Thomas F. and Gala (Smith) Polley.

Mr. Polley worked at Roll Coater in Greenfield and Western Electric in Indianapolis. He farmed with his son and his father and enjoyed camping with his children.

Survivors include his parents; his wife, Sharon Polley of Markleville; a son, Thomas Randy Polley of Markleville; a daughter, Amanda (husband, Jason) Bailey of New Castle; two grandchildren, Lillyan and Maverick; two sisters, Sandy Arnold of Greenfield and Penny Goudy of Shirley; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by a sister, Darla Braden.

Funeral services were May 26 at Condo & Son Funeral Home in Wilkinson. Burial followed at McCray Cemetery in Wilkinson. Visitation was May 26 at the funeral home.

Frances E. Morgan

June 29, 1924 – May 22, 2009

Frances E. Morgan, 84, of Knightstown, died May 22 at Hancock Regional Hospital in Greenfield.

She was born June 29, 1924, in Knightstown, a daughter of the late Frank J. and Pansy B. (Davis) Ellis.

Mrs. Morgan was a 1924 Mays High School graduate who later worked for United Telephone Company for many years. She was a seamstress at the Indiana Soldiers’ and Sailors’ Children’s Home in Knightstown for several years. A member of Psi Iota Xi sorority for man years, she was also a member of Center Christian Church for over 75 years. Mrs. Morgan enjoyed gardening, collecting antiques and raising and painting gourds. She was a painter and a crafter.

Survivors include three daughters, Marcia D. (husband, Ronald L.) Denton of LaGrange, Lisa M. Morgan of Knoxville, Tenn., and Lori G. (husband, Gregory J.) Morrison of Indianapolis; eight grandchildren, Lindy N. (husband, Lance) Cummings of Hamilton, Ohio, Lauren R. Denton, Lizabeth K. Denton, Leigh A. Denton and Larissa M. Denton, all of Fort Wayne, Lesly A. Denton of LaGrance and Jacob C. and Jared R. Morrison, both of Indianapolis; a brother, Marcus N. (wife, Evelyn) Ellis of Carthage; and several nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Richard E. Morgan; a sister, Olive H. Mattix; and two brothers, Claude A. Ellis and Stoy F. Ellis.

Funeral services were May 26 at Center Christian Church in Mays with Pastor Bill Worrell officiating. Burial followed at Center Cemetery. Visitation was May 25 at Center Christian Church.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Center Christian Church Building Fund. Funeral arrangements were handled by Hinsey-Brown Funeral Service in Knightstown.

Mary Eleanor Bash

July 10, 1917 – May 23, 2009

Mary Eleanor Bash, 91, of McCordsville, formerly of Carthage, died May 23 at her home.

She was born July 10, 1917, in Hancock County, a daughter of the late Thomas and Blonda (Wicker) Cox.

Mrs. Bash was a secretary for United Screw Products and was a member of East Street Christian Church in Carthage, Kappa Kappa Sigma sorority, 50 Plus Club and the Home Economics Club.

Survivors include a daughter, Sally L. Presser of McCordsville; a son, Larry N. (wife, Sharron) Bash of New Castle; seven grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; and a sister, Louise Shelten of Carmel.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Kenneth D. Bash; and a brother, Lowell Cox.

Funeral services are at 11 a.m. Thursday, May 28, at Stillinger Family Funeral Home in Greenfield with Pastor David Bonne officiating. Burial will follow at Park Cemetery in Greenfield. Visitation is 4-8 p.m. Wednesday, May 27, at the funeral home.

Memorial contributions may be made to East Street Christian Church in Carthage.
