Indiana Marriages, 1780-1992

Lois Ruth Shields

Feb. 2, 1924 – Apr. 10, 2009

Lois Ruth (White) Shields, 85, of Carthage, died April 10 at Hancock Regional Hospital in Greenfield.

She was born Feb. 2, 1924, in Rush County, a daughter of the late Fred Burr and Ethel Henley (Publow) White.

Mrs. Shields was valedictorian of the Carthage Normal School Class of 1942. She graduated from Purdue University in 1946 and received her masters degree in 1976. Mrs. Shields served as a teacher in Mays, Carthage and Knightstown, where she taught chemistry and home economics. She was a 4-H leader for 30 years with the Ripley Needletwisters and was a member of the Hancock County Genealogical Society, Common Threads Quilt Guild, Knightstown Sewing Circle and the Carthage Literary Circle. Mrs. Shields was a past member of the Riverside Cemetery Board and recently attended Raysville Friends Meeting. She assisted in computerizing the obituary index for the Knightstown Banner for the years 1908-2000.

Survivors include four children, Pennina (husband, Phil) McMullen of Carthage, Charles Shields of Powder Springs, Ga., Charity (husband, Tony) Maxwell of Greenfield and Howard (wife, Sonna) Shields of Greenville, Ohio; five grandchildren, Amanda (husband, Jacob M.) Lund of Tipp City, Ohio, Tony (wife, Emily) Maxwell, Jr., of Moberly, Mo., Tommy Maxwell of West Lafayette, Brian (wife, Amber) Rosales of Fargo, N.D., and Shavon Rosales of Orlando, Fla.; three great-grandchildren, Jacob, Hannah and Emily; and several nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Thomas H. Shields; a sister, Margaret Perisho; and two brothers, Edgar and Joseph White.

Funeral services were April 14 at Hinsey-Brown Funeral Service in Knightstown. Burial followed at Riverside Cemetery in Carthage. Visitation was April 13 at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society.

Jack A. Wallace (1 of 2)

Oct. 2, 1927 – Apr. 12, 2009

Jack A. Wallace, 81, of Knightstown, died April 12 at Hancock Regional Hospital in Greenfield.

He was born Oct. 2, 1927, in Muncie, a son of the late Jerome and Bessie (O’Quirk) Wallace.

Mr. Wallace served in the U.S. Army and worked as a directory artist for Bell Telephone for many years. He was a member of Pioneers of America.

Survivors include three daughters, Andrea Wallace of Knightstown, Carla Warner of Las Vegas, Nev., and Cheryl Daniels of Shawnee Mission, Ka.; a son, Edwin Blackwood of Australia; a granddaughter, Lili Wallace; 14 additional grandchildren; and a sister, Gloria Robinson of Florida.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother and three sisters.

Funeral services are at 11 a.m. Saturday, April 18, at Kennard Baptist Church with Bro. Randall Morris and Pastor Tim Smith officiating. Todd Funeral Home in Knightstown is handling arrangements.

Jack A. Wallace (2 of 2)

Oct. 2, 1927 – Apr. 12, 2009

Jack A. Wallace, 81, of Knightstown, died April 12 at Hancock Regional Hospital in Greenfield.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother; three sisters and two step-grandsons.

Funeral services were at April 18, at Kennard Baptist Church with Bro. Randall Morris and Pastor Tim Smith officiating. Todd Funeral Home in Knightstown handled arrangements.

Jack E. Craig

May 17, 1948 – Apr. 13, 2009

Jack E. Craig, 60, of Pembroke Pines, Fla., died April 13 in Greenfield.

He was born May 17, 1948, in New Castle, a son of Herman Craig and the late Maudrae Craig.

Mr. Craig worked at Hook’s Drug in Indianapolis. After moving to Florida in 1978 he managed several different drug stores before retirement. He also owned and operated a wig shop.

Survivors include his father, Herman Craig of Greenfield; a brother, Mark (wife, June) Craig of Thomasville, Ga.; a sister, Nancy Craig of Indianapolis; two nephews; and one niece.

He was preceded in death by his mother.

Funeral services are at 2 p.m. Thursday, April 16, at Condo & Son Funeral Home in Wilkinson with Paul Enyart officiating. Burial will follow at McCray Cemetery in Wilkinson. Visitation is April 16 from 11 a.m. until time of services at the funeral home.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society or the ASPCA Wildlife Center.

Lowell E. Bridges

Apr. 22, 1929 – Apr. 13, 2009

Lowell E. Bridges, 79, of Knightstown, died April 13. He was born April 22, 1929, in Knightstown, a son of the late Wm. Avery and Hazel Bridges.

Mr. Bridges was a lifelong Knightstown resident who farmed with his father for many years. He retired from Ford Motor Company in 1990 after 26 years of service. Mr. Bridges was a lifelong member of Knightstown United Methodist Church. He was a 1947 Knightstown High School graduate. Known as a loving husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather, Mr. Bridges enjoyed family get-togethers and traveling with his wife and grandchildren.

Survivors include his wife, JoAnn; a son, Steve (wife, Margie) Bridges; two daughters, Susie (husband, Devin) Keefer and Beth (husband, Carlos) Rigdon, all of Knightstown; a stepsister, Joan Weber; 11 grandchildren, Staci (husband, Doug) Emerson, Monica Locker, Melanie Lingenfelter, Matt Bridges, Nikki Bridges, Zach Bridges, Crystal (husband, Jason) White, Molly Rigdon, Shawna Rigdon, Kyly (husband, Brandon) Moore and D.J. Keefer; six great-grandchildren, Sy, Seth, Wes, Dakota, Madison and Nichole; and several nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a son, Ronnie Bridges; a grandson, Ty Bridges; a brother, Lloyd Bridges; and his stepmother, Mildred Bridges.

Graveside funeral services are at 2:30 p.m. Friday, April 17, at Glen Cove Cemetery in Knightstown with Rev. Kenneth Wells officiating. Visitation is April 17 from noon to 2 p.m. at Hinsey-Brown Funeral Service in Knightstown. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Make a Difference Knightstown, Knightstown American Legion Post 152 veterans memorial or flag funds.

Betty Lou Wood

Nov. 30, 1934 - Sep. 24, 2008

Betty Wood, formerly of Knightstown, died September 24, 2008, in Port Charlotte, Fla. She was the daughter of Ruth and Clifford Younts of Knightstown.

Mrs. Wood was a 1952 Knightstown High School graduate, who moved to Florida in 1987. She was a homemaker, though she had worked at Gregor’s Bakery in Knightstown and Western Electric. Mrs. Wood was a member of Knightstown American Legion Post 152 Auxiliary and Knightstown United Methodist Church. She enjoyed traveling and cats.

Survivors include a daughter, Gretchen (husband, Jeff) Keen of Fredericksburg, Va.; two sons, William "Bill" (wife, Tonya) Wood of Homestead, Fla., and Michael "Mike" (wife, Trish) Wood of New Castle; three grandchildren, Tara Keen and Michael and Cody Wood; three step- grandchildren, Rusty, Rocky and Matt York; a brother, John Younts of Cambridge City; a sister, Hyacinth Kern of Celina, Tenn.; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, John and Mary Wood of Carthage and Dale and Mary Lynn Lareau, and Chris Younts of Orange Park, Fla.; and several nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Charles W. "Bill" Wood; and a step-grandson, Christopher Williams.

Graveside funeral services will take place at 10 a.m. Wednesday, April 15, at Glen Cove Cemetery in Knightstown. Arrangements are being handled by Kays-Ponger Funeral Home in Punta Gorda, Fla. Local arrangements are being handled by Macer-Hall Funeral Home.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two sisters, Ida Crypto and Mary Ann Wilkinson; a grandson, Earl Adams; and a great-grandson, Zachary Gard.

Memorial contributions may be made to Tidwell Hospice, 5955 Rand Blvd., Sarasota, Fla. 34238.

Florence E. Hall

Feb. 8, 1919 - Apr. 1, 2009

Florence E. Hall, 90, of Wilkinson, died April 1 at Brandywine Living Center in Greenfield. She was born Feb. 8, 1919, in Harrison, Ohio, a daughter of the late Arthur and Letha (Stokes) Hewson.

Mrs. Hall retired as owner and bookkeeper of Hall’s Garage in Wilkinson. She attended Wilkinson Church of Christ and was an avid gardener who loved to quilt and crochet. Mrs. Hall also enjoyed spending time with her family and was known as a caring and loving mother and wife.

Survivors include two sons, Bob (wife, Patsy) Hall of Wilkinson and Jerry (wife, Linda) Hall of Wilkinson; a daughter, Betty (husband, Vern) Denney of Nashville; 14 grandchildren; 36 great-grandchildren; eight great-great-grandchildren; a brother, Edwin Hewson; and several nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, George W. Hall; a son, Ralph Hall; two brothers, Melvin Hewson and Lowell Hewson; and a granddaughter, Debora Hall.

Funeral services were April 4 at Condo & Son Funeral Home in Wilkinson with Russ Lutes and Ryan McCarty officiating. Burial followed at McCray Cemetery in Wilkinson. Visitation was April 3 at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to Wilkinson Church of Christ.
