Mary L. Schaeffer
August 19, 1930 – March 15, 2009
Mary L. Schaeffer, 78, of Knightstown, died March 15 at Hancock Regional Hospital in Greenfield.
She was born Aug. 19, 1930, in North Vernon, a daughter of the late Ralph and Pearl Littell.
Mrs. Schaeffer worked at Western Electric and retired after 25 years of service. She was a member of Knightstown American Legion Post 152 Auxiliary. Mrs. Schaeffer enjoyed playing cards, bingo and reading. She also enjoyed spending time with her family and family gatherings.
Survivors include two daughters, Barb (husband, Jeff) Gustin of Knightstown and Sue (husband, Paul) Loveall of Carthage; three sons, Gary Schaeffer of Knightstown, Tom (wife, Tina) Schaeffer of Knightstown and John (wife, Shari) Schaeffer of Greenfield; 13 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a daughter-in-law and a granddaughter.
Funeral services were March 18 at Hinsey-Brown Funeral Service in Knightstown with Rev. Jack Hannum officiating. Burial followed at Glen Cove Cemetery in Knightstown. Visitation was March 17 at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society with envelopes available at the funeral home.
Bobby W. Goodwin
March 22, 1939 – March 15, 2009
Bobby W. Goodwin, 69, of New Castle, died March 15 at St. Vincent’s Seton Specialty Hospital in Indianapolis.
He was born March 22, 1939, in Flemingsburg, Ky., a son of the late Lawrence and Edith (Medlin) Goodwin.
Mr. Goodwin was a 1958 New Castle High School graduate and a veteran of the U.S. Army. He retired from Ford Motor Company in Indianapolis after 35 years of service. Mr. Goodwin opened Goodwin Bail Bonding for over 32 years and also served on the New Castle Police Department. He was named Outstanding New Castle Police Officer of the Year in 1974. Mr. Goodwin served on the New Castle City Council for four years and was very active in the Republican party for man years, running for mayor and sheriff. Recently, he was employed as the head doorkeeper at the Indiana House of Representatives in Indianapolis. A Ford Mustang enthusiast, he was a member of several Mustang car clubs, as well as the Greensboro Masonic Lodge, Veterans of Foreign Wars #1282, the Henry County Shriners and the Eagles Lodge.
Survivors include his wife, Anna Jo (Cecil) Goodwin of New Castle; a daughter, Kathie (husband, Leo “Buddy) Whitlow of Richmond, Va.; three sons, Michael Wayne (wife, Monica) Goodwin of Suffolk, Va., Gary Bruce (wife, Dana) Goodwin of Fayetteville, N.C., and Tony Goodwin of Tucson, Ariz.; four grandchildren, Jason Crouch and Nathan (wife, Belinda) Crouch, both of Richmond, Va., Spencer Goodwin of Fayetteville, N.C., and Matthew Goodwin of Suffolk, Va.; a brother, Elmer “Pete” (wife, Norma) Goodwin of Henderson, Nev.; two sisters, Jane (husband, Bob) Billings of Indianapolis and Judy (husband, Odell) Stevens of O’Fallon, Mo.; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
Funeral services are at 1 p.m. Friday, March 20, at Hinsey-Brown Funeral Service in New Castle with Rev. Dr. Linda Philabaun and State Representative Tom Saunders officiating. Burial will follow at South Mound Cemetery in New Castle. Visitation is 4-8 p.m. Thursday, March 19, at the funeral home. Masonic services will take place at 8 p.m. on March 19. James D. Bainter, Sr.
ca. 1937 - March 24, 2009
James D. “Jim” Bainter, Sr., 72, of Vero Beach, Fla., died March 24 at Sebastian River Medical Center in Sebastian, Fla.
Born in Greenfield, Mr. Bainter lived in Vero Beach for 51 years. He was a fabricator who worked at Piper Aircraft for 37 years. He was a member of the Orioles and Moose lodges, and was a former member of the Eagles Lodge in Sebastian. Mr. Bainter served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War.
Survivors include his son, James Bainter, Jr., of Vero Beach, Fla.; two daughters, Belinda Bainter of Vero Beach and Marie Fleming of Palm Bay, Fla.; a sister, Shirley Miller of Vero Beach; six grandchildren; and 7 great-grandchildren.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife, Barbara Ann Bainter; and his second wife, Shirley Jean Bainter.
Funeral services and visitation were March 28 at Strunk Funeral Home in Sebastian, Fla., with Rev. Buddy Johns officiating. Military honors were conducted by the Sebastian Area Veterans’ Honor Guard. Ardell (Harris) Polston
April 29, 1926 – March 25, 2009
Ardell (Harris) Polston, 82, of Greenfield, died March 25 at Brandywine Golden Living Center in Greenfield.
She was born April 29, 1926, in Russell Springs, Ky., a daughter of the late Orlando and Burcella Harris.
Mrs. Polston was a Russell Springs High School graduate and a 1982 retiree of Western Electric, where she worked as an assembler for many years. She was a member of Faith Chapel Independent Baptist Church in Knightstown.
Survivors include her daughters, Vickie Thompson of Greenfield and Judy Canter of Knightstown; a sister, Marcella “Margie” Hoy of Noblesville; four grandchildren, Wendy (husband, Mike) Leonard of Wilkinson, Troy (wife, Angie) Bass of Greenfield; Barbara (husband, Patrick) Kamminga of Greenfield and Darin (wife, Emily) Canter of Indianapolis; and six great-grandchildren, Jonathon, Garrett, Ronnie, Raegan, Austin and Kyla.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Rova F. Polston; two brothers, Grady Harris and Tink Harris; and a sister, Ethel Johnson.
Funeral services were March 28 at Erlewein Mortuary in Greenfield with Brother Randy Gross officiating. Burial followed at Park Cemetery in Greenfield; Visitation was March 27 at the mortuary. Martha E. Moreland
February 22, 1907 – March 26, 2009
Martha E. Moreland, 102, of Greenfield, died March 26 at Golden Living Center in Greenfield.
She was born Feb. 22, 1907, in Pendleton, a daughter of the late Thomas and Daisy (Collier) Keesling.
Mrs. Moreland was a former Easter Star member.
Survivors include a daughter, Frances; her husband, Don Swartz of Greenfield; two grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and five great-great-grandchildren.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a brother and two sisters.
Funeral services were March 29 at Todd Funeral Home in Knightstown. Burial followed at Glen Cove Cemetery in Knightstown. Visitation was 12-2 p.m. on March 29.
Vickie S. McKinney
October 8, 1953 – March 30, 2009
Vickie S. McKinney, 55, of Knightstown, died March 30 at her home.
She was born Oct. 8, 1953, in New Castle, a daughter of Mitchell Porter and the late Mildred (Hamilton) Porter.
Mrs. McKinney worked for 26 years at Smurfit Stone Container Corporation and had been a pharmacy technician for Kroger in New Castle. She was a member of American Legion Post 152 Auxiliary.
Survivors include her father, Mitchell D. Porter of Knightstown; two daughters, Nichole (husband, David) Davis of Arlington and Jaime Thurman of Greenfield; a brother, Ray (wife, Rebecca) Porter of Anderson; two sisters, Kathleen (husband, Cecil) Powell of Morristown and Jeanine McCullers of Knightstown; three grandson, Jarrod, Caleb and Grant Davis, all of Arlington; and several aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins.
In addition to her mother, she was preceded in death by her grandparents.
Funeral services are at 10 a.m. Friday, April 3, at Hinsey-Brown Funeral Service in Knightstown with Pastors Randy Gross and Bill Mitchell officiating. Burial will follow at Glen Cove Cemetery in Knightstown. Visitation is 4-8 p.m. Thursday, April 2, at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to Hancock County Hospice or the American Cancer Society with envelopes at the funeral home.
Leland Kendall
Mar. 5, 1925 – Apr. 8, 2009
Leland E. Kendall, 84, of Shirley, died April 8 at Henry County Memorial Hospital in New Castle.
He was born March 5, 1925, in Shirley, a son of the late Charles and Edna (McLeland) Kendall.
A 1943 Kennard High School graduate, he was a former member of the Charles A. Beard school board and a member of Kennard Christian Church. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II and was active in the American Legion. He was also a member of the Kennard Lions Club. Mr. Leland was known for his athletic abilities, having held many county records in basketball as a Kennard Leopardcat.
Survivors include two sons, Tim (wife, Cathy) Kendall of Shirley and Andy (wife, Leah) Kendall of McCordsville; four grandchildren, Darby Kendall, Seth Kendall, Mallory Kendall and Clara Kendall; and a nephew, John Kendall.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Warren Kendall.
Funeral services were April 11 at Hinsey-Brown Funeral Service in Knightstown with Dale Riggs officiating. Burial followed at Glen Cove Cemetery in Knightstown. Visitation was April 10 at the funeral home.
