Mildred Pauline Porter

Mildred Pauline (Hamilton) Porter, 81, of Knightstown, died January 28 at her home.
She was born Aug. 26, 1927, in Fleming County, Ky., a daughter of the late Isaac Edward and Laura Jane (Pitts) Hamilton.
Mrs. Porter was known as someone who cared deeply about her family, home and community. She assisted in managing the G2 Café in Knightstown for 17 years.
Survivors include her husband, Mitchell E. Porter of Knightstown; a son, Ray (wife, Rebecca) Porter of Anderson; three daughters, Kathlene (husband, Cecil) Powell of Arlington, Jeanine McCullers of Knightstown and Vickie McKinney of Knightstown; 10 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; two sisters, Lona Porter of Ohio and Eldred Logan of Kentucky; two brothers, Glen Hamilton of Sulfur Springs and Clayton Hamilton of New Castle; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were February 2 at Hinsey-Brown Funeral Service in Knightstown. Burial followed at Glen Cove Cemetery in Knightstown. Visitation was February 1 at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society or Hancock County Hospice.
William “Bill” Dawes
Oct. 20, 1945 – Jan. 28, 2009
William “Bill” Dawes, 63, of Knightstown, died January 28 at Community Hospital East in Indianapolis.
He was born Oct. 20, 1945, in Knightstown, a son of the late Maurice and Roda (Burgin) Dawes.
Mr. Dawes, a lifelong Knightstown resident, worked in maintenance for Chrysler Corp. in Indianapolis and New Castle. He was a member of Knightstown Christian Church, Millersville Masonic Lodge, Hoosier Beagle Club, American Quarter Horse Association, American Kennel Club and United Auto Workers #371. He was also a former Knightstown volunteer fireman, Carthage deputy marshall and an emergency medical technician.
Survivors include his wife, Barbara Dawes of Knightstown; two daughters, Patty (husband, Jeremy) Howard and Candy (husband, Troy) Chapman, all of Knightstown; a sister, Katie (husband, Arnold) Moir of Columbus; and six grandchildren.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister.
Funeral services were February 2 at Todd Funeral Home in Knightstown with Rev. Richard Thayer officiating. Burial followed at Glen Cove Cemetery in Knightstown. Visitation was February 1 at the funeral home.
Richard D. Schweikhardt
April 23, 1930 – Feb. 2, 2009
Richard D. Schweikhardt, 78, of Knightstown, died February 2 at Henry County Memorial Hospital in New Castle.
He was born April 23, 1930, in Spiceland, a son of the late Ernest Leo and Thelma (St. Clair) Schweikhardt.
Having lived in Spiceland most of his life, Mr. Schweikhardt was a 1948 Spiceland High School graduate. He also served in the U.S. Army in Alaska. He retired from Dana Corporation in New Castle where he served as a supervisor. He was active in the Spiceland community and Boy Scouts of America. An avid Purdue Boilermakers fan, Mr. Schweikhardt founded the Richard D. and Emma F. Schweikhardt Memorial Scholarship Fund. He was a member of Ogden United Methodist Church.
Survivors include three sons, Doug (wife, Ruth) Schweikhardt of Rush County, David Schweikhardt of East Lansing, Mich., and Carol Schweikhardt of Indianapolis; two grandchildren, Shawn and Ryan Schweikhardt of Rush County; a sister, Dorthy (husband, Ralph) Stover of Spiceland; and several nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Emma (Caudill) Schweikhardt.
Funeral services are at 2 p.m. Thursday, February 5, at Todd Funeral Home in Knightstown with Pastor Carolyn Stoten officiating. Burial will follow at Glen Cove Cemetery in Knightstown. Visitation is 4-8 p.m. Wednesday, February 8, at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to the Richard D. and Emma F. Schweikhardt Memorial Scholarship Fund or the donor’s choice.
Arnella Irene Bragdon
Apr. 15, 1930 – Feb. 12, 2009
Arnella Irene (Whiteside) Bragdson, 78, of Willow Branch, died February 12 at Hancock Regional Hospital in Greenfield.
She was born April 15, 1930, in Hancock County, a daughter of the late Horace and Bertha (Harting) Whiteside.
Mrs. Bragdon was a homemaker and housewife. She was a member of Willow Branch United Methodist Church.
Survivors include her husband, Robert; two sons, Neil (wife, Joy) Bragdon of Greenfield and Todd (wife, Cindy) Bragdon of Willow Branch; a daughter, Cathy Jett of Indianapolis; nine grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; two brothers, Donald Whiteside of New Palestine and Ivan Whiteside of Greenfield; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were February 16 at Condo & Son Funeral Home in Wilkinson with Adam Payne officiating. Burial followed at Willow Branch Cemetery. Visitation was February 16 at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Diabetes Association.
Herman W. Robbins
Apr. 27, 1937 – Feb. 13, 2009
Herman W. Robbins, 71, of Nashville, formerly of Charlottesville, died February 13 at Hospice of Central Indiana.
He was born April 27, 1937, in Muncie, a son of the late William Henry and Ruby P. (Carson) Robbins.
A 1956 Carthage High School graduate, Mr. Robbins also attended Purdue University and served in the U.S. Army. He worked at Delco Remy in Anderson for 30 years before retiring in 1991. Mr. Robbins delivered the Indianapolis Star and Indianapolis News in the Greenfield area and drove for Bill Mize Trucking. He was involved with 4-H leadership in Rush County and was a member of Dunreith Christian Church.
Survivors include his wife, Martha L. Robbins of Nashville; two sons, William W. Robbins of Nashville and Robert E. (wife, Jennifer) Robbins of Greenfield; a daughter, Tammy L. Kindler of Anderson; two brothers, Fred Robbins of Bean Blossom and Carl Robbins of Carthage; and four grandchildren, Brandon, Derek, Shawn and Joshua.
Funeral services are at 1 p.m. Wednesday, February 18, at Erlewein Mortuary in Greenfield with Kenton Smith officiating. Burial will follow at Asbury Cemetery in Morristown. Visitation was February 17 at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society.
Dorothy Sue Burgess

Dorothy Sue “Dottie” Burgess, 70, of Brazil, died February 13 at Cloverleaf Healthcare in Knightsville.
She was born Nov. 22, 1939, in Patriot, a daughter of the late David W. and Ada Ascherman White.
Mrs. Burgess was a Madison High School graduate who later earned a master’s degree in education from Indiana State University. After years of teaching, she began a career in the administration of long-term healthcare facilities. She retired from Cloverleaf Healthcare in Knightsville. Mrs. Burgess was a member of First United Methodist Church of Brazil, Delta Theta Tau sorority, Women’s Reading Club and United Methodist Church youth groups.
Survivors include her husband, Ersel “Bud” Burgess; two daughters, Pennie S. Brown of Arlington and Holly K. Peper of Brazil; a son, Brent A. Burgess of Maryland; five sisters, Shirley Waggener, Betty Smith, Rosemary Mix, Ruth Felgar and Linda Westby; a brother, David E. White; and three grandsons, Justin Greenwalt, Brandon Greenwalt and Jared Peper.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a brother, John White.
Funeral services were February 17 at Moore Funeral Home in Brazil with Pastors Guy Lipkin and Lyle Monnett officiating. Burial followed at Calcutta Cemetery. Visitation was February 16 at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to Cloverleaf Healthcare in Knightsville.
Philip H. Hamm
Oct. 19, 1921 – Feb. 14, 2009
Philip H. Hamm, 87, of Knightstown, died February 14 at Henry County Memorial Hospital in New Castle.
He was born October 19, 1921, in Henry County, a son of the late Sam and Laura (Riley) Hamm.
Mr. Hamm was a Mays High School graduate who attended Ball State Teachers College. He served in the Canadian Royal Air Force and was a U.S. Navy pilot in the South Pacific during World War II. Mr. Hamm received the Purple Heart. He retired from Tweedy Lumber Company in Knightstown and was very active in his community. His experience in construction made him a valued volunteer and advisor for the local Habitat for Humanity. Mr. Hamm assisted in the construction of two Habitat homes in Knightstown.
Additionally, he was past president and a 50-year member of the Knightstown Optimist Club, and remained one of the club’s most active members. Mr. Hamm was a constant presence at Knightstown’s Little League ball diamonds during baseball and softball season. He also gave his time to the fish wagon and the Optimist Club’s youth soccer program. An organizer of the Hoosier Gym’s after school program, he was also one of its most faithful volunteers. Mr. Hamm was also an avid fan and loyal supporter of Knightstown High School’s football and basketball teams. He was a 50-year member of Knightstown’s Golden Rule Masonic Lodge and a member of the Knightstown Chamber of Commerce. He received the chamber’s Citizen of the Year award in 2002. He was also named a Sagamore of the Wabash in 2004 for his years of public service.
Survivors include three sons, Gary (wife, Deborah) Hamm, Jeffrey (wife, Lisa) Hamm, and Gregory Hamm; a daughter, Linda (husband, Roy) Wilhite; eight grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Salina (Weber) Hamm; two brothers, Rodney and Virgil Hamm; and three sisters, Marie Mohler, Ruby Maple and Adrienne Jarrett.
Funeral services are at noon on Saturday, February 21, at Condo & Son Funeral Home in Wilkinson. Visitation is 10 a.m. until time of services on February 21. Memorial contributions may be made to the Knightstown Cheer Guild.
