Indiana Marriages, 1780-1992

Samuel J. Akers

November 15, 1946 - March 16, 2010

Samuel J. Akers, 63, of New Castle, died March 16 at his home.

He was born Nov. 15, 1946, in Henry County, a son of the late Raymond and Mildred (Meer) Akers.

Mr. Akers worked as a machinist at Chrysler in New Castle until his retirement in 2003. He also worked at Allison Gas Turbine in Indianapolis. He was an avid collector and restorer of International Tractors. Mr. Akers enjoyed spending time at home with his family and his dogs, as well as traveling to tractor shows.

Survivors include his wife, Vickie (Conner) Akers of New Castle; five children, Samuel Joseph (wife, Melody) Akers of new Castle, Dawn Rene Leece of Michigan, Tiffanie Michelle (husband, Carl) Vaughan of Anderson, Shawn David (wife, Stephanie) Leece of New Palestine and Joshawa Alan (wife, Cara) Leece of New Castle; nine grandchildren, Alisha Sue (husband, Donald) Akers, Joseph Raymond Leece, Samantha Bentley Vaughan, Crystle Ann Vaughan, Megan Nichole Vaughan, Dustin T. Gribbons, Misty Dawn Gribbons, Cory Leece and Samuel Dale Leece; and two great-grandchildren, Bella Nicole Thomas and Issac Allan Lynch.

Funeral services were March 20 at Condo & Son Funeral Home in Wilkinson with Pastor Jeff Johnson officiating. Burial followed at Green Hills Memory Gardens in New Castle. Visitation was March 19 at the funeral home.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society.

Cheryl L. Gossett

August 14, 1955 - March 15, 2010

Cheryl L. Gossett, 54, of Carthage, died March 15 at her home.

She was born Aug. 14, 1955, in Greenfield, a daughter of the late Charles and Lula (Sleeth) Brown.

Mrs. Gossett was a homemaker.

Survivors include a son, Chuck Gossett of Anderson; three stepsons, James Lee Gossett, Greg Gossett and Jeremy Gossett, all of Anderson; two daughters, Shonda (husband, Darrell) Hall of Knightstown and Mia Lynn (husband, James) Smith of Carthage; a stepdaughter, Michelle Lindsay of Anderson; 19 grandchildren; two brothers, Jeffery (wife, Bonnie) Brown of Mishawaka and Raymond (wife, Kim) Brown of Knightstown; and a sister, Crystal (husband, Danny) Baker of Charlottesville.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, William Gossett.

Funeral services were March 20 at Stillinger Family Funeral Home, Pasco Chapel, in Greenfield with Richard Thayer officiating. Visitation March 20 at the funeral home.

William Grover Mann

May 28, 1940 - March 13, 2010

William Grover Mann, 69, of Knightstown, died March 13 at his home.

He was born May 28, 1940, in Dayton, Ohio, a son of the late Welby Arthur and Ellen Ida (Eckhart) Mann.

Mr. Mann lived most of his life in Henry County. He was a self-employed roofer who owned and operated his own roofing business for many years. He was a member of First Church of the Nazarene in New Castle. Mr. Mann enjoyed NASCAR racing and was once a race car driver at Mt. Lawn Speedway. He enjoyed spending time with his family.

Survivors include his former wife, Mary Mann Maxwell; nine children, Paul Mann of New Castle, Bruce (wife, Joann) Mann of New Castle, Billy Mann of New Castle, Wendy (husband, John) Mettert of Knightstown, Cindy (husband, Chris) Craft of Carthage, Renee (husband, Kenneth) Raper of Tennessee, Tina Collins of California, Bridgett Mann of Ohio and Regina Mann of Ohio; 30 grandchildren; a sister, Mary Mann of Arkansas; and several nieces, nephews, cousins, half-brothers and a half-sister.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Madelyn Orcutt; two brothers-in-law, Dewy Freeman and Ralph Orcutt; two grandchildren; and a former wife, Madge Mann.

Funeral services were March 20 at First Church of the Nazarene in New Castle with Rex Madison officiating. Visitation was March 20 at the church. Macer-Hall Funeral Home in New Castle.

Leonard Gene Cook

June 21, 1942 - March 20, 2010

Leonard Gene "Cookie" Cook, 67, of Wilkinson, died March 20 at Henry County Memorial Hospital in New Castle.

He was born June 21, 1942, in Wilkinson, a son of the late Louis and Helen (Lockridge) Cook.

Mr. Cook was a retired self-employed race-car driver and welder. He worked at Fields Auto Parts and enjoyed racing at Anderson Speedway and Mt. Lawn Speedway. Survivors include two daughters, Rhonda Cook and Regenea Johnson, both of Wilkinson; a son, Chuck Cook of Greensboro; eight grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and sever al nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Linda Cook; a brother, Ronald E. Cook; a sis ter, Sharon K. Garner; and a son-in-law, Tony Johnson.

Funeral services are at 8 p.m. Friday, March 26, at Condo & Son Funeral Home in Wilkinson with Russ Lutes officiating. Visitation is March 26 from 6 p.m. until time of services.

Anna Marie Mullins

December 16, 1944 - March 27, 2010

Anna Marie "Rie" Mullins, 65, of Greenfield, died March 27 at Hancock Regional Hospital in Greenfield.

She was born Dec. 16, 1944, in Jamestown, Ky., a daughter of the late Vertis Lee and Gertie Mae (Brown) Phelps.

Mrs. Mullins was a homemaker who enjoyed playing bingo, quilting and collecting. She enjoyed going to garage sales and spending time with her family and grandchildren.

Survivors include her husband, Jack Mullins of Greenfield; two sons, Ronnie (wife, Lynette) Mullins of Charlottesville and David (wife, Serena) Mullins of Indianapolis; two daughters, Tina Johnson of Greenfield and Lisa (husband, Jim) Barrick of Martinsville; three brothers, Jimmy Phelps and Hubert Phelps, both of Cincinnati and Frank (wife, Patti) Phelps of Greenfield; four sisters, Helen (husband, Jimmy) Mitchell of Cincinnati, Barbara (husband, Ronald) Roberts of Carthage, Wanda Faye (husband, Joe) Lane of Knightstown and Joyce (husband, James) Roy of Knightstown; 10 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by two brothers, Wendell Phelps and Huger Phelps; and a granddaughter, Amber Fleming.

Funeral services are at 10 a.m. Friday, April 2, at Stillinger Family Funeral Home in Greenfield with Pastor Ira Scott officiating. Burial will follow at Park Cemetery in Greenfield. Visitation is 4-8 p.m. Thursday, April 1, at the funeral home.

Randy E. Schaeffer

December 2, 1953 - March 25, 2010

Randy E. "Smokey" Schaeffer, 57, of Knightstown, died March 25 at his home.

He was born Dec. 2, 1953, in Indianapolis, a son of Viola J. (Porter) Schaeffer and the late Edward R. Schaeffer.

Mr. Schaeffer was a four-year veteran of the U.S. Navy, serving his last duty station aboard the U.S.S. Enterprise. A millwright, carpenter and painter, he was employed by Xenia Corporation in Indianapolis. Mr. Schaeffer enjoyed playing golf, fishing and hanging out with family and friends. He was a member of Knightstown American Legion Post 152. Survivors include his mother, Viola Schaeffer of Knightstown; a sister, Pam (husband, Clyde) South of Knightstown; a brother, Ronald L. (wife, Iris Barker) Schaeffer, Sr., of Jacksonville, Fla.; a niece, Amy (husband, Brian) Cummings of Fortville; four nephews, Brett (wife, Julie) South of Indianapolis, Jason South of Knightstown, Ronald L. Schaeffer II of Indianapolis and Brian Schaeffer of Jacksonville, Fla.; two great-nieces and seven great-nephews.

Visitation is 4-8 p.m. Wednesday, March 31, at Hinsey-Brown Funeral Service in Knightstown. Private funeral services will be at a later date, with burial following at Glen Cove Cemetery in Knightstown.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Hancock County Hospice, 1560 B State St., Greenfield, IN 46140.

Emory C. Beam, Jr.

January 27, 1927 - March 25, 2010

Emory C. Beam, Jr., 83, of Lewisville, died March 25 at Henry County Memorial Hospital in New Castle.

He was born Jan. 27, 1927, in Rush County, a son of the late Emory C. and Hazel O. (Rider) Beam, Sr.

Mr. Beam was a Lewisville High School graduate who attended Ball State University. He served with a U.S. Army field artillery unit during World War II. He retired from Chrysler Corporation, where he worked as an industrial engineer, in 1989. A lifetime member of Lewisville Presbyterian Church, he was a past president of the Lewisville Lions Club. Mr. Beam also owned and operated Beam’s Realty. He enjoyed working with stained glass and spending time with his family.

Survivors include three sons, Stephen M. (wife, Sue) Beam of Lafayette, Michael E. (wife, Holly) Beam of Michigan and Brian D. (wife, Tammy) Beam of New Castle; a daughter, Cynthia G. Beam of Columbus; six grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; three sisters, Eileen Graham of New Castle, Mildred (husband, Rex) Brooks of New Castle and Ruth Knotts of Knightstown; and several nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Patricia Beam.

Funeral services were March 29 at Lewisville Presbyterian Church. Burial, with full military honors, followed at Lewisville Cemetery. Visitation was March 28 at Marshall & Erlewein Funeral Home in Lewisville.
