Donald F. Rhodes
October 17, 1932 – August 5, 2011
Donald F. Rhodes, 78, died Aug. 5 at Hubbard Hospice House in Charleston, W. Va.
He was born Oct. 17, 1932, in Knightstown, the son of the late Artis S. and Marie (Van Volkinburg) Rhodes.
Mr. Rhodes was a graduate of Knightstown High School and Ball State University. He was a veteran of the United States Air Force. He retired from Graybar Electric Company with 31 years of service. He was a member of King’s Way Christian Church in Nitro, W.Va. He spent many years with his sister working on the family genealogy. He also wrote an autobiography of his life.
Survivors include his wife, Mattie Shepherd Rhodes; two daughters, Matricia (husband, Daniel) Cook of Lexington, Ky., and Darla (husband, Eugene) Brooks of Charleston, W. Va.; two granddaughters, Jessica (husband, Jarrod) Blaisdell of Ft. Lewis, Wash., and Cheryl Brooks of Charleston; one grandson, Samuel Cook of Miami, Fla.; and one great-grandson, Zachariah Blaisdell of Ft. Lewis.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Vera Jean Rhodes Milner Visitation was Aug. 7 and funeral services were Aug. 8 at Tyler Mt. Funeral Home in Cross Lanes, W. Va. with Dr. George Forbes and Pastor Gene Brooks officiating. Burial followed at Tyler Mt. Memory Gardens Mausoleum.

Dale T. Custer
February 17, 1970 – August 4, 2011
Dale T. Custer, 41, of Rush County, died Aug. 4 at his home.
He was born Feb. 17, 1970, in Rushville, a son of Verlin and Margaret Ann (Moore) Custer.
Mr. Custer was a 1989 graduate of Rushville High School. He was a partner in Custer Farms and Custer Electric. He dispatched part-time for the Rush County Sheriff’s Department and was a 23-year member of Raleigh Volunteer Fire Department, where he was a first responder and assistant fire chief. He was a member of Plum Creek Christian Church, past president of Rush County Agricultural Association and was currently on the advisory board in Washington Township. Mr. Custer was an avid boater and fisherman.
Survivors include his father, of Rush County; a brother, Craig (wife, Catherine) Custer of Rush County; two sisters, Nansi Custer of Rush County and Carol Taylor (husband, Whalen Abbott) of Knightstown; a nephew, Chase Custer; nieces Cora Custer and Brooke Taylor; and many aunts, uncles and cousins.
He was preceded in death by his mother and his grandparents.
Visitation was Aug. 8 with an honor guard vigil and funeral services were Aug. 9 at Moster Mortuary in Rushville. Burial was in Raleigh Cemetery where fireman’s honors were observed. Ray Sweet III presided.
Memorial contributions may be made to Raleigh Volunteer Fire Department, Plum Creek Christian Church or Rush County Agricultural Association.
Phyllis L. Hysong
Abt 1944 – August 4, 2011
Phyllis L. Hysong, 67, of Greenfield, died Aug. 4 at home.
She was born and raised in Willow Branch, a daughter of the late Marjorie Taylor and Dwight Moore.
She graduated from Hancock Central High School in 1963. It was there she met and later married her high school sweetheart, William Hysong. Mrs. Hysong was employed most of her life in the banking industry. She was known for her hard work, loyalty and honesty. Her family and friends remember her for her mental and phys- ical toughness. She was known as a devoted wife, mother and grandmother. She was a member of New Beginnings United Methodist Church of Markleville and Eden Order of Eastern Star #101. In retirement, she enjoyed traveling with her husband, family and friends. She enjoyed gardening and sewing and was often seen working with her koi pond. Mrs. Hysong was an avid sports fan and enjoyed watching basketball and football, especially the Pacers and Colts.
Survivors include her husband; a son, Dean (wife, Terry) Hysong; a daughter, Deborah (husband, AJ) Spoerner; a sister, Marilyn Strange; five grandchildren, Christina Haddin, Jessica (husband, John) Dugan, Jonathan Redmon, Grace Spoerner and Zachary Spoerner; and two great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents.
Visitation was Aug. 8 and funeral services were Aug. 9 at Condo and Son Funeral Home in Wilkinson. There was an Eastern Star service by Eden Lodge #101. Burial followed at McCray Cemetery in Wilkinson.

Maureen Lewman
September 15, 1919 – August 4, 2011
Maureen Lewman, 91, of Rushville, died Aug. 4 in Rushville.
She was born Sept. 15, 1919, in Hogue, Ky., the daughter of the late Adam and Mary Wesley Sadler.
Mrs. Lewman was a lifelong resident of Rush County, Falmouth area. She was a 1936 graduate of Raleigh High School. She was a beautician for many years in Dublin.
Survivors include a brother, Linville (wife, Judy) Sadler of Falmouth; a sister, Christina Barber of Milan; and several nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Charles H. "Spud" Lewman; a sister, Opal Hathaway; and brothers, Clyde and Clifton "Tip" Sadler.
Visitation was Aug. 6 and funeral services were Aug. 7 at Moster Mortuary in Rushville with Pastor Mick Saunders officiating. Burial followed at Raleigh Cemetery.
Donald C. Porter
September 4, 1935 – August 4, 2011
Donald C. Porter, 75, of Connersville, died Aug. 4 in New Castle.
He was born Sept. 4, 1935, in Connersville, a son of the late Lawrence Porter and Elva (Chance) Cox.
Mr. Porter retired from Fayette County School Corporation and was the owner/operator of Porters Plumbing & Heating. He served his country in the U.S. Army as a military policeman and was stationed in Germany. He enjoyed fishing, dancing and working in his yard and garden.
Survivors include four children, Brenda (husband, Terry) Craig of Milton, Keith (wife, Kathy) Porter of Ft. Wayne, Melinda (husband, Lea) of New York and Susan (husband, Nelson) Biggs of Wildwood, New Jersey; five step-children, Pam (husband, Marion) Buchanan of Knightstown, Judy (husband, Stanley) Back of Shirley, Beth Loyd of Liberty, and Linda Thompkins and Tina Goins, both of Connersville; step-mother, Helen Porter of Milan; seven grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; several step-grandchildren and great-grandchildren; three sisters, Carolyn Ailes of Connersville, Pam O’Sullivan of Greensburg and Johanna Weber of Sunman; four brothers, Leo Porter of Ill., Larry Porter of Indianapolis, Marty Porter of Milan and Todd Porter of Fortville; and several nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, Mr. Porter was preceded in death by his stepfather, James Russell Cox; his wife, Jean (Fuchs) Porter; his wife, Betty Jean (Hedrick) Porter; a brother, Jerry Cox; a sister-in-law, Sandy Cox; and a brother-in-law, Randy Ailes.
Visitation was Aug. 9 and funeral services were Aug. 10 at Marshall & Erlewein Funeral Home in Dublin. Burial followed at Dale Cemetery in Connersville with military honors by Connersville American Legion Post #1.

Marjorie E. Walker
October 8, 1922 – August 2, 2011
Marjorie E. Walker, 88, of Knightstown, died Aug. 2 at Rush Memorial Hospital.
She was born Oct. 8, 1922, in Shelby County, a daughter of the late Raymond and Bertha (Shaw) Trimble.
She graduated from Charlottesville High School in 1940. She worked as cafeteria manager at Knightstown Elementary School, from which she retired. Mrs. Walker was a member of Knightstown Christian Church, Jolly Workers Home Ec Club and a life member of VFW in New Castle. She enjoyed traveling, reading, crossword puzzles and spending time with her family.
Survivors include a daughter, Barbara Smith of Rushville; a son, Ronald (wife, Debra) Walker of Anderson; grandchildren, Tim (wife, Jennifer) Walker of Indianapolis, Tina (husband, Brett) Steffey of Fishers, Ronald Walker, Jr., of Greenfield, Stephen Walker of Speedway and Amber (husband, Derrick) Nuffer of Greenfield; three step-grandchildren, Mary Ann Boone of Anderson, Jill Liter of Indianapolis and Jason O’Conner of Navarro, Fla.; 10 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; a sister, Ada Mae Gross of Momence, Ill.; brother-in-law, Ted (wife, Mamie) Fish of Fortville; and several nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Paul Walker; five brothers and two sisters.
Visitation and funeral services were Aug. 6 at Hinsey-Brown Funeral Service Knightstown Chapel with Richard Thayer officiating. Burial followed at Glen Cove Cemetery in Knightstown.
Leona Mae Clark
March 6, 1924 - August 14, 2011
Leona Mae Clark, 87, died Aug. 14 at Indiana University Health Center in Muncie.
She was born March 6, 1924, in Shirley, a daughter of the late Henry and Velma (Wilkinson) Ebbert.
Mrs. Clark lived on her farm and was a farmer’s wife. A member of Eastern Star Lodge #492, she was also a member of Henry County Farm Bureau since 1951. Mrs. Clark was active in the Cadiz Alumni Association, Shirley Red Hat Society, Mechanicsburg Cemetery Association, and she served as a volunteer soy promoter for the Indiana Soybean Board.
Survivors include a son, Duane (wife, Suzanne) Clark of Shirley; a granddaughter, Rebecca Robertson of Shirley; a nephew, Jon Ebbert of Virginia; and three nieces, Cindy Ebbert of Maryland, Heidi Ebbert Fraze and Valerie Waterman.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her first husband, George Ithamer Farmer; her second husband, Maurice Clark; an aunt, Delma Wilkinson; a son, Harold Ray Farmer; a grandson, John Henry Farmer; and a bother, Carl "Bud" Ebbert.
Funeral services are at 11 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 18, at Condo & Son Funeral Home in Wilkinson with Pastor Marty Ballard officiating. Burial will follow at Mechanicsburg Cemetery. Visitation is 4-8 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 17, at the funeral home.
