Betty Lenora "Nora" Hudson

May 5, 1943 – July 17, 2011

Betty Lenora "Nora" Hudson, 68, of Greenfield, died July 17 at her home.

She was born May 5, 1943, in Soldier, Ky., a daughter of the late Wilfred Ray and Bessie E. (Masters) Roseberry.

A 1961 graduate of Knightstown High School, she had worked at Western Electric in Indianapolis and Greenfield Central High School, and later as a title searcher. She was employed by First American Title Company in Greenfield, and was often at the Hancock County Courthouse. Ms. Hudson was an avid sports enthusiast who loved IU basketball and the Indianapolis Colts. She most enjoyed being a grandmother and great-grandmother.

Survivors include two daughters, Tonya R. (husband, Tracy) Moore of Carthage, and Tyna L. Cochran of Indianapolis; four grandchildren, Spc. First Class Robert D. Humphrey, serving in the U. S. Army in Afghanistan, Jordan L. Unger of Carthage, Patrick S. Cochran of Dayton, Ohio and Erin Michelle (husband, John) Rose of Dayton, Ohio; two great-grandchildren, Rocky Dylan Humphrey and Dallas Humphrey; siblings Cleodas (wife, Carolyn) Roseberry of Anderson, Arby Gearhart of Olive Hill, Ky., Guin E. (husband, Jimmie) Chapman of Knightstown, Wilfred Ray (wife, Peggy) Roseberry of Anderson and Nina Kay Murray of Hagerstown; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents.

Private funeral services will be July 21 at Hinsey-Brown Funeral Service Knightstown Chapel with Ralph Thompson officiating. Burial will follow in Glen Cove Cemetery in Knightstown. There will be no public visitation.

Memorial contributions may be made to Hancock County Humane Society, 214 E. Main St., Greenfield, IN 46140.

David M. Deck

July 21, 1955 - July 25, 2011

David M. Deck, 56, of Knightstown, died July 25 at Hancock Regional Hospital in Greenfield.

He was born July 21, 1955, in Savannah, Ga., a son of Darrell and Betty June (Marsh) Deck of Knightstown.

A self-employed carpenter and member of the Christian church, Mr. Deck was an avid outdoorsman who served in the National Guard for eight years.

Survivors include his parents; a son, Nathan Deck of Shelbyville; two daughters, Jennifer (husband, Joe) Logsdon of Shelbyville and JoAnna West of Shelbyville; eight grandchildren; two sisters, Deborah (husband, Bill) Jefferson of Carmel and Darlene Wilburn of Shirley; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services are at 10 a.m. Friday, June 29, at Condo & Son Funeral Home in Wilkinson with Gary Sickle officiating. Burial will follow at Glen Cove Cemetery in Knightstown. Visitation is 4-8 p.m. Thursday, July 28, at the funeral home.

Lora Brook Hatfield

October 11, 1995 - July 23, 2011

Lora Brook Hatfield photo Lora Brook Hatfield, 15, of Arlington, died July 23 near Manchester, Tenn.

She was born Oct. 11, 1995, in Jacksonville, N.C., a daughter Bradley Hatfield and Nancy (Ward) Newton.

Miss Hatfield lived most of her life in Arlington. She worked at Stagg’s Dairy Treats in Rushville and would have been a sophomore at Knightstown High School. Miss Hatfield was an active member of Arlington Christian Church. She enjoyed clogging at Charmayne’s Dance Studio in Rushville, where she had been a student for 13 years. She was also involved in the Posey Township 4-H Club and she enjoyed scrap-booking and was known as a gifted student.

Survivors include her mother, Nancy (husband, Junior) Newton of Arlington; her father, Brad (wife, Roxann) Hatfield of Arlington; four brothers, Nicolas and Bryce Hatfield, Dylon Newton and Devin Burchett, all of Arlington; a sister, Morgan Burchett of Arlington; grandparents Dorothy (husband, Jim) Ward and Jim Montgomery, all of Shelbyville, Cathy (husband, James) Miller of Arlington, Joan Sterling of Westport and Raymond (wife, Cindy) Hatfield, Jr., of New Salem; and great-grandparents Helen Gregory of Manchester, Tenn., and Lewis (wife, Ruth) Lee of Rushville.

She was preceded in death by a grandfather, Max Ward; a brother, Dalton Hatfield and several great-grandparents.

Funeral services are at 10 a.m. Saturday, July 30, at Arlington Christian Church with Bob Brock officiating. Burial will follow at Arlington East Hill Cemetery. Visitation is 2-8 p.m. Friday, July 29, at Arlington Christian Church.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Lora Brook Hatfield Scholarship Fund at Citizens State Bank. Moster Mortuary in Rushville handled arrangements.

Morris E. McKinney

September 30, 1936 – July 23, 2011

Morris E. McKinney, 74, died July 23 at his home.

He was born Sept. 30, 1936, in Indianapolis, a son of the late James and Evelyn (Broadstone) McKinney.

Mr. McKinney was a 28-year veteran, serving in the U. S. Army. He retired from Community Hospital East as a locksmith, and had worked at Monon L & N as a railroad inspector. He was a member of Indianapolis VFW #267 and American Legion of Indianapolis Post #4. His hobbies were guns and automobiles.

Survivors include his wife, Sabra (White) McKinney of Wilkinson; son Jeff McKinney of Pendleton; three daughters, Sue (husband, Steve) Brogan of Daleville, Patty (husband, Steve) Lovins of Anderson, and Tammy McKinney of Anderson; 10 grandchildren; and several great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Patricia McKinney; and two brothers, James and Vernon McKinney.

Visitation was July 26 and funeral services were July 27 at Condo & Son Funeral Home in Wilkinson with Steve Brogan and Mike Barker officiating. Burial followed at McCray Cemetery in Wilkinson with military graveside rites. Memorial contributions may be made to Indianapolis VFW #267 or American Legion of Indianapolis Post #4.

Mary Ellen Waggoner

August 5, 1915 – July 20, 2011

Mary Ellen Waggoner, 95, of rural Lewisville, died July 20 at her home.

She was born Aug. 5, 1915, in Rush County, a daughter of the late Lewis Jefferson and Nellie Mae (Sowers) Gordon.

Mrs. Waggoner lived in the Rush County area all her life, where she was a homemaker and farmer’s wife. She was a member of Raleigh Volunteer Fire Department Women’s Auxiliary, Lewisville Eastern Star #463 and Ebenezer Presbyterian Church, where she played the piano. She enjoyed doing needlework, ceramics and raising flowers.

Survivors include a son, Michael J. (wife, Susan) Waggoner of Lewisville; a daughter, Marilyn Jane (husband, Dennis) Witt of Straughn; four granddaughters, Teresa (husband, Steve) Huffman, Kim (husband, Steve) Fairchild, Kris (husband, Jamie) Raley and Kerry (husband, Clint) Ellison; three grandsons, John Russell (wife, Julia) Witt, Jeffery J. (wife, Brenda) Waggoner and Brandon M. (wife, Shannon) Waggoner; 19 great-grandchildren; and five great-great-grandchildren.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Clyde Russell Waggoner; an infant son, Donny Waggoner; a grandson, Dennis Joseph "Joey" Witt; a great-granddaughter, Oliva Rebecca Waggoner; two brothers, Paul and George Gordon; and a sister, Merle Fecher.

Visitation was July 24 and funeral services were July 25 at Ebenezer Presbyterian Church with Revs. Peter Zinn and Arthur Whitaker officiating. Burial followed in Raleigh Zion Cemetery in Raleigh. Marshal & Erlewein Funeral Home in Lewisville was in charge of arrangements.

Thomas Lee Peyton

February 13, 1947 - July 31, 2011

Thomas Lee Peyton, 64, of Cambridge City, died July 31 at his home.

He was born Feb. 13, 1947, in Indianapolis, a son of the late Tony Lee and and Caroline Elizabeth (Street) Peyton.

Mr. Peyton grew up in Lewisville and was a 1965 Lewisville High School graduate. He later graduated from DePauw University, earning a bachelor’s degree in science. He continued his education at Butler University, where he earned a master’s degree in pharmacology. Mr. Peyton served as a pharmacist at Hook’s Drug Store in Cambridge City for 15 years. For the past 21 years, he worked at the pharmacy at Kroger in New Castle. He was recently named manager of a Kroger pharmacy in Richmond. Mr. Peyton had varied interests, including blacksmithing, guns, nature and spending time on his farm. He particularly enjoyed spending time with his family and grandchildren. He was a member of Lewisville Masonic Lodge #72 F&AM.

Survivors include his wife, Elsie Marie (Griffin) Peyton; two daughters, Kimberly Peyton of Richmond and Erin (Peyton) Jordan of Castro Valley, Calif.; three grandchildren, Michaela and Jonathon Jordan of Castro Valley, Calif., and Drew Brown of Richmond; a brother, Michael (wife, Nancy) Peyton of Knightstown; two aunts, Barbara Hickman of New Palestine and Mary Lou Lynn of Houstonville, Ky.; an uncle, John Peyton of Leesburg, Fla.; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services are at 11 a.m. Friday, Aug. 5, at Marshall & Erlewein Funeral Home in Lewisville with Rev. Arthur Whitaker officiating. Burial will follow at Lewisville Cemetery. Visitation is 2-6 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 4, at the funeral home. Masonic services will be included.

Donnie V. Stephens

May 5, 1939 – July 26, 2011

Donnie V. Stephens, 72, of Carthage, died July 26 at Veterans Administration Medical Center in Indianapolis.

He was born May 5, 1939, in Lewis County, Ky., a son of the late Ollie and Faithy (Gilliam) Stephens.

Stephens retired from Hunt Paving following 31 years of service and was a member of the Indiana Laborers Union Local #120. He enjoyed playing music and could play any instrument, but particularly enjoyed banjo and guitar bluegrass style. He was a NASCAR fan, enjoyed fishing, poker and gambling, and especially playing cards with his family every Friday night. He enjoyed spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren.

Survivors include six children, Robert Stephens, Tim (wife, Stacey) Stephens, Chuck (wife, Heather) Stephens, Teresa (husband, Dan) Cullison, and Dawn (husband, Nathan) Sanders, all of Carthage, and Kimberly (husband, Doug) Jett of Shelbyville; a brother, Bob (wife, Lavon) Stephens of Knightstown; sisters Violet Stacey and Lura Stephens, both of Knightstown; 20 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Peggy Ann Stephens; two granddaughters; a grandson; brothers Junior and Coy Stephens; and sister Odelene Enix. Visitation was July 29 and funeral services were July 30 at Hinsey-Brown Funeral Service Knightstown Chapel with Pastor Paul Lawson officiating. Burial followed at Riverside Cemetery in Carthage.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart Association.
