Indiana Marriages, 1780-1992

George S. McClarnon

January 3, 1921 - June 4, 2011

George S. McClarnon, 90, of Greenfield, died June 4.

He was the son of the late Mary and Russell "Bill" McClarnon.

He was a graduate of Charlottesville High School and attended Indiana University for a year before enlisting in the Army Air Corps. He was stationed for four years in Wales. After the war, he attended Michigan State School of veterinary Medicine, where he graduated second in his class and was president of the student chapter of the veterinary association. Dr. McClarnon opened his practice in Knightstown in 1954, working primarily with large animals.

During his Knightstown years, he served as chairman of the board of trustees of Knightstown Methodist Church, chairman of the board of directors of Citizens National Bank and as a member of the board of directors of First National Bank of New Castle. He also served as president of Kiwanis Club and was a lifelong member of American Legion and the Knightstown Post.

In 1967, Dr. McClarnon built Brandywine Veterinary Hospital in Greenfield. During his career, he was actively engaged in promoting the establishment of the School of Veterinary Medicine at Purdue University, where he later served on the board of veterinary examiners, and he was president of Indiana Veterinary Medical Association in 1978. He retired in 1989.

Dr. McClarnon raised and bred standard-bred racehorses and was heavily involved in the movement to bring parimutuel betting to Indiana. He served two terms on the board of Indiana Trotting and Pacing Horse Association and was a member of the Standard-bred Board of Regulations. He was elected to Indiana Standard-bred Hall of Fame in 2007.

Survivors include his wife, Eileen; his three children, Melanie, Jeff and Laura (Yorn); eight grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; a brother, Keith McClarnon; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Visitation was June 7 and funeral services were June 8 at Erlewein Mortuary in Greenfield. Burial was at Park Cemetery in Greenfield. Contributions may be made to Mental Health America/Hancock County or to Humane Society of Hancock County.

Maxine McCartt Wright Sparks

March 6, 1914 – June 2, 2011

Maxine McCartt Wright Sparks, 97, of Dunreith, died June 2, at The Waters of New Castle.

She was born March 6, 1914, in Glen Mary, Tenn., the daughter of the late Jasper Robert and Minnie (Welsh) McCartt.

Mrs. Sparks was a 1932 graduate of Stearns High School in Stearns, Ky. She was a homemaker most of her life and had lived in Dunreith since 1956. She was an avid Bible reader and enjoyed spending time with her family.

Survivors include her husband, Erna Sparks of Dunreith; children Ray C. (wife, Carol) Wright of Shirley, Robert C. (wife, Joyce) Wright of McKee, Ky., John N. (wife, Mae) Wright of Corbin, Ky., James N. (wife, Bobbie ) Wright of Corbin, Ky., Bill A. (wife, Cindy) Wright of Spiceland, Bruce A. (wife, Martha) Wright of Dayton, Ohio, and Betty Rose of Knightstown; several grandchildren, great-, great-great- and great-great-great-grandchildren; and a brother, Vance (wife, Millie) McCartt of Winter Park, Fla.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her first husband, Raymond Wright; a daughter, Mary M. Fannin; and brothers, Virgil Vernon and Victor McCartt.

Visitation was June 5 and funeral services were June 6 at Hinsey-Brown Funeral Service Knightstown Chapel with Pastor Randy Gross officiating. Burial followed in Glen Cove Cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made to a charity of the donor’s choice.

Gail B. Barnard, Jr.

September 15, 1945 - June 6, 2011

Gail B. Barnard, Jr., 65, of New Castle, died June 6 at Henry County Memorial Hospital in New Castle.

He was born Sept. 15, 1945, in Rush County, a son of the late Gale B. and Anna Mae (Jarboe) Barnard.

Mr. Barnard was a U.S. Navy veteran, having served as an E-5 sonar tech during the Vietnam War. He retired from Chrysler Corporation in New Castle in 1996 after 24 years of service. He served on the board of directors of the Henry County Heart Society, and he was a member of the American Legion and VFW. Mr. Barnard enjoyed golf, NASCAR racing and he was an avid sports fan.

Survivors include his wife, Marsha L. (Kissick) Barnard of New Castle; two sons, Benjamin (wife, JoAnna) Barnard of New Castle and Bryan (wife, Ruth) Barnard of Indianapolis; four grandchildren, Candy Morgan, Tori Barnard, Milo Barnard and Lucia Barnard; three siblings, Peggy Richardson of Rushville, Phil (wife, Angie) Barnard of Beech Grove and Mary (husband, Chris) Miller of Rushville; his mother-in-law, Eileen Murray of New Castle; and several in-laws, Nancy (husband, Phil) Harrold of Noblesville, Peggy Muncy of New Castle, Duane (wife, Belinda) Kissick of Greensboro and Marilyn (husband, Tony) Cox of Osgood.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his fathers-in-law, Kash Kissick, Jr., and Fred Murray.

Funeral services are at 10 a.m. Friday, June 10, at Hinsey-Brown Funeral Service in New Castle. Burial will follow at Green Hills Memory Gardens in New Castle with full military graveside rites conducted by the American Legion and VFW. Visitation is 4-8 p.m. Thursday, June 9, at the funeral home.

Donald G. Gray

January 10, 1926 - June 2, 2011

Donald G. Gray, 85, of Rush County, died June 2 in Rushville.

He was born Jan. 10, 1926, a son of the late Wilbur and Helen (Bell) Gray.

Mr. Gray was a 1943 Mays High School graduate. A U.S. Army veteran, he served in the Pacific theater during World War II. Mr. Gray spent his entire life farming in Center Township, Rush County. He raised purebred livestock and was a standard horse breeder. Mr. Gray was known locally and nationally as a judge at cattle and hog shows. A member of Center Christian Church, he was also a member of American Legion Post 150, Lewisville Masonic Lodge #72 F&AM (formerly Raleigh lodge), Rushville Elks Lodge #1307, and the American and Indiana Hereford associations.

Survivors include his wife, Mary Ann Gray of Rush County; a son, Brian D. (wife, Terri) Gray of Rush County; two daughters, Janet L. (husband, Michael) Sparks of Shirley and Marilyn J. (husband, Ervin) Roberts of Brookville; two stepsons, Michael (wife, Sharon) Cox of Muncie and Jerry (wife, Suzanne) Cox of Rushville; two stepdaughters, Sue Ann (husband, Dennis) Mullins of St. Augustine, Fla., and Kathy (husband, Bob) Nikels of West Minister, S.C.; eight grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife, Norma Lee (McDaniel) Gray.

Funeral services were June 7 at Center Christian Church with Bill Worrell officiating. Burial followed at Center Cemetery with full military graveside rites provided by the Rush County veterans honor guard.

Brenda K. Magee

August 26, 1951 - June 13, 2011

Brenda K. Magee, 59, of Carthage, died June 13 at St. Vincent Hospital in Indianapolis.

She was born Aug. 25, 1951, in New Castle, a daughter of the late Howard L. and Carol (Parks) Chew.

Mrs. Magee was a 1969 Knightstown High School graduate. She worked at Western Electric for 13 years. She and her husband, Jim, owned and operated Gus’s Café in Carthage for the last 27 years. Mrs. Magee was known as someone who enjoyed cooking and serving people.

Survivors include her husband, Jim Magee of Carthage; a son, Bradley (wife, Stacey) Magee of Carthage; three grandchildren, Kelton, Jarrett and Macey Magee, all of Carthage; a sister, Karen Owens of Leesburg; a niece, Tiffany Owens; two nephews, Matthew and Jonathan Owens; and several brothers- and sisters-in-law.

Funeral services are at 11 a.m. Friday, June 17, at Hinsey-Brown Funeral Service in Knightstown with Pastor Randy Gross officiating. Burial will follow at Glen Cove Cemetery in Knightstown. Visitation is 48 p.m. Thursday, June 16, at the funeral home.

Memorial contributions may be made to St. Vincent Heart Center, 2001 W. 86th St., Indianapolis, IN 46260.

Dale E. Wolski

February 25, 1934 - June 11, 2011

Dale E. Wolski, 77, of Shirley, died June 11 at Glen Oaks Health Campus in New Castle.

He was born Feb. 25, 1934, near Anderson, a son of the late Jacob Wolski II and Audrey (Love) Wolski.

Mr. Wolski was raised in Shirley. He worked in mechanical repair for Hall Chevrolet in Knightstown and Wilkinson. He also worked at Don Davis Chrysler-Plymouth in Knightstown, the Salvation Army in Indianapolis, Roberts Pipeline Construction in Sulphur Springs and Preventive Fleet Maintenance in Indianapolis, from which he retired. Mr. Wolski was a member of Salvation Army and the Indiana Blacksmiths Association.

Survivors include three children, Beth (husband, Jay D.) Carr, Matthew (wife, Jennifer) Wolski and Susan (husband, Jim) Macy, all of Spiceland; four grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by an infant daughter, Melissa Gayle Wolski; two sons, Walter and Andrew Wolski; four brothers, Jacob James Wolski III, Donald E. Wolski, Robert Wolski and Richard Wolski; and two sisters, Audrey Snider and Anna Kennedy.

Funeral services are at 3 p.m. Wednesday, June 15, at Condo & Son Funeral Home in Wilkinson with Salvation Army Officer Israel Vasquez officiating. Burial will follow at Harlan Cemetery. Visitation is 1 p.m. until time of services on June 15. Marshall & Erlewein Funeral Home handled arrangements.

Catherine Sarks

December 6, 1923 – June 9, 2011

Catherine Sarks, 87, of Orlando, formerly of Wilkinson, died June 9 at Health Central Hospital in Orlando.

She was born Dec. 6, 1923, in Naples, Ky., a daughter of the late Asa and Hattie Runyon.

Mrs. Sarks was a member of Calvary Church of the Nazarene in Apopka, Fla.

Survivors include her sons, Garry Sarks of Orlando and James (wife, Patricia) Sarks of Ball Ground, Ga.; three grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; two sisters, Louisa Reffitt of Ridgedale, Mo., and Barbara Young of Shirley; two brothers, Delbert Runyon of Westport and Richard Runyon of Marion; and several nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Allen; a son, Wendell Ray; a daughter, Janet Kay; two brothers, Ralph Runyon and Acie Runyon, Jr.; three sisters, Amelia Wiley, Bertha Huff and Gusta Marcum; and a daughter-in-law, Bonnie Sarks.

Visitation was June 13 and funeral services were June 14 at Condo and Son Funeral Home in Wilkinson. Burial followed at McCray Cemetery in Wilkinson.
