Clarence Alfred Post
January 1, 1913 – May 3, 2011
Clarence Alfred Post, 98, died May 3 at his home.
He was born Jan. 1, 1913, in Terre Haute, the second son of the late Herman S. Post and Ida M. Huebethal.
His life began with the end of the horse and buggy as the automobile rolled off the assembly line and ended with the age of space exploration and the opening of virtual space, the Internet. Mr. Post loved learning and the breadth of his education showed his enthusiasm for understanding, with an Indiana State law degree and a teaching degree from Indiana University. He enjoyed talking to people and learning what he could from them as well as sharing his vast knowledge and definite opinions.
Mr. Post married Rhessa Routh in 1940 and the couple lived in Chicago and South Bend while he worked for Dun and Bradstreet. He rarely talked about those years and it was only very recently that the family learned that he was involved in helping refugees escape the turmoil in Europe at that time.
In 1945, the Posts chose Knightstown as the place to begin Mr. Post’s lifelong dream, and Post and Post Hardware was born. "The Store," as it was known in the family, remained a Knightstown institution for 65 years. Mr. Post was very active in the town, serving as a volunteer fireman and on the town board, for many years its president. He also taught social studies and economics at the Indiana Soldiers’ and Sailors’ Children’s Home. He was a member of Bethel Presbyterian Church, serving in both its physical and spiritual leadership.
Survivors include three children, Stephen A. Post, Stephanie (husband, Ruey) Wood, and Risa (husband, David) Paul; six grandchildren and four great-grandchildren, John (wife, Megan) Argyelan, Eric Argyelan, James (wife, Christina) Argyelan and children Jacob and Samuel, William A. (wife, Jenna) Paul and children Evangelina and Aria), Risa Dawn Paul and Stephen P. Paul.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife; his brother, Francis Post; and his sister-in-law, Christine.
Funeral services were May 9 at Bethel Presbyterian Church. Todd Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
