Harold Z. Wood, 79, Westview Nursing and Rehab Center, Bedford, formerly of Mitchell, died Tuesday in Winter Haven Hospital in Winter Haven, Fla. Born in Oolitic, he was the son of Charles Wesley and Martha Mary Miller. He married Shirley Ann Pruett in September 1950, and she survives. He retired from General Motors, where he worked in the maintenance department and also Delco Remy in Anderson. He was a member of the First Church of Nazarene in Winter Haven, Fla., and United Auto Workers Local 662. Surviving with his wife of Polk City, Fla., are three daughters: Cheryl Wainscott of Indianapolis, Michele Grills of Anderson and Beverly Hicks of Lafayette; four brothers: Bill, Charles and Dean Miller, all of Bedford, and Houbert Miller of Indianapolis; three sisters: Lois Walters and Reva Roberts, both of Bedford, and Sharon Lucas of Phoenix, Ariz.; seven grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents. Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at the First Church of the Nazarene in Winter Haven, Fla., and 7 p.m. Tuesday at Carmony-Ewing Broadway Funeral Home, Shelbyville, with the Rev. Richard Carr officiating. Friends may call from 4 to 7 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.

Cleo Underwood
May 31, 1915-Sept. 29, 1999
COLDWATER, Mich. -- Cleo Underwood, 84, Coldwater, Mich., formerly of Bedford, died at 8:15 p.m. Sunday at Heritage House of Salem. Born in Washington County, she was the daughter of Sanford and Gertrude (Busick) Fancher. She married Clarence D. Lewis on June 24, 1934, and he died at 3:58 p.m. Saturday at Jasper Memorial Hospital. Born in Martin County, she was the daughter of Hershel and Pearl (Ballard) Payton. She married Charles Robbins on March 1, 1937, and he preceded her in death. She was a homemaker. Surviving are three sons: Charles Edward of French Lick, Ronnie Lee and Larry D. Robbins, both of Shoals; two daughters: Betty Ann Gilbert and Sandra K. Spears, both of Shoals; a sister, Catherine Vessal; 11 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents and three brothers. Services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Queen-Lee Funeral Home, Shoals. Burial will be in Trinity Springs Cemetery. Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.

James H. Stillman

BLOOMINGTON -- James H. Stillman, 71, Bloomington, died Sept. 10, 1997; two brothers: George E. and Harold "Windy" Stillman Jr.; and one sister, Ida Jeanette McCullough. Services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Deremiah-Frye Mortuary, Greene & Harrel Chapel, Bloomington, with Pastor Lowell Anderson officiating. Burial will be in Clover Hill Cemetery, Harrodsburg. James L. Edmonson

MITCHELL -- James L. Edmonson, 31, Mitchell, died at 3:45 a.m. Saturday at Paoli Convalescent Center in Paoli. Born in English, she was the daughter of George A. and Vergie O. (Denton) Temple. She was a homemaker. She is survived by Marietta Montgomery, who was her caregiver for more than 28 years. She was preceded in death by her parents and one son, Howard Cook. Services will be at 1 p.m. today at Denbo Funeral Home, English, with the Rev. Bob Kelly officiating. Burial will be in English Cemetery. Jacob Wagner
FORT MYERS, Fla. -- Jacob Wagner, 91, Fort Myers, Fla., formerly of Lawrence County, died at 3:55 p.m. Tuesday at Dunn Memorial Hospital, Bedford, after a lengthy illness. Born in Lawrence County, he was the son of John David and Effie Elizabeth (Ray) Stewart. He married Mary Ellen Miller on Sept. 20, 1941, and she survives. He was a World War II Army veteran, receiving the Purple Heart with Bronze Star, EAME Theater Service Medal, three Bronze Battle Stars and Oak Leaf Cluster. He retired from the Naval Surface Warfare Center-Crane and worked as a farmer. He was member of the Baptist Church, where he served as deacon, and Federation of Government Workers. He was a former Boy Scout leader. Surviving with his wife are one son, Danny Charles Stewart of Oolitic; two daughters: Donna Gayle Chinn of Ravenna, Ohio, and Diana Sue Flynn of Springville; one sister, Catherine Hannum of Oolitic; nine grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren, one great-great-grandchild and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; one sister, Audrey Owens, and two brothers: Lloyd Godsey and Doyle "Dean" Stewart. Services will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Day & Carter Mortuary, Bedford, with Brother Robert E. Phillips and the Rev. Richard Tallman officiating. Burial will be in Beech Grove Cemetery with graveside military rites accorded by members of American Legion Gillen Post No. 33, Bedford. Friends may call from 1 to 8 p.m. today and 10 a.m. until service time Friday at the mortuary.

Gerald "Jerry" Desender, 63, 1705 13th St., died at 5:38 p.m. Wednesday at Mitchell Manor Living and Rehab Center. Born in Washington County, she was the daughter of Delza E. and Alta C. (Clements) Barrett. She married Clair Robert Fisher on Jan. 17, 1942, and he died at 6:05 a.m. Wednesday at the Columbus Health and Rehab Center. Born in Bedford, she was the daughter of Charles and May (Jones) Mann. She married Robert V. Myers and he died at 5 p.m. Tuesday at Martin County Health Care and Rehab Center. Born in Martin County, he was the son of Thomas and Oma (Wade) George. He married Vera Holt in 1931 and she died in 1973, and Wilma Wininger in 1974 and she died Wednesday at Deaconess Hospital in Evansville. Born in Burns City, she was the daughter of Alexander Bradford and Julia Ann (Scott) Girdley. She married James Arles Kirby on March 21, 1936, and he died at 6:55 a.m. Thursday at his residence. Arrangements are pending at Day & Carter Mortuary, Bedford.

Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. today at the mortuary. Correction Thomas A. George A daughter was listed incorrectly in the obituary of Thomas A. George, 87, Shoals, who died Friday at Bedford Regional Medical Center. Born in Lawrence County, he was the son of Edward Esco and Grace (Bridges) Beavers. He married Mary Jane Baker on April 26, 1968, and she survives. He was an Army veteran and worked at Dana Corporation in Mitchell. He was a graduate of Huron High School and a member of Mitchell Church of Christ and the Cecil C. Martin American Legion Post No. 250. Surviving with his wife are five half-brothers: Opal Leroy Edwards of Mansfield, Texas, Jim Beavers of Tunnelton, Carl Beavers of Mitchell, Richard Beavers and Michael Beavers, both of Owensburg; and six half-sisters: Darlene Rose White of Mitchell, Ollia Mae Houshour and Patricia Lauderdale, both of Bloomington, Victoria Allen and Wilma Frazier, both of Bedford, and Susie Allgood of Buddha. He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Gordon Gene Beavers. Graveside services will be at 11 a.m. Monday at Mitchell Cemetery with Brother Allen Burris officiating. Military rites will be accorded by the Cecil C. Martin American Legion Post 250 and Marvin R. Davis Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 9107. Friends may call from 1 p.m. to 6 p.m. Sunday at Chastain Funeral Home, Mitchell.

BROWNSTOWN -- Everett Smith, 87, Brownstown, formerly of Medora, died Friday at Norton's Hospital in Louisville, Ky. Born in Grethel, Ky., he was the son of Basil and Gracie (Blanton) Hamilton. He married Capitola Hall on Jan. 19, 1950, and she survives. He was the owner of the old Wrightway Service Station in Pekin and an ordained Baptist minister. Surviving with his wife are two daughters: Diana Butler of Louisville, Ky., and Loretta Nicholson of Pekin; three grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Services will be at 2 p.m. Sunday at Dawalt Funeral Home, Salem, with Brother Randy Albertson officiating. Burial will be in the Mount Washington Cemetery, Pekin. Friends may call from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. today and from 1 p.m. until time of service Sunday at the funeral home.
