MAY GOODPASTER, 90, Palmyra, died Sunday, December 29, at Floyd Memorial Hospital in New Albany. She was a native of Harrison County and a member of the VFW Ladies’ Auxiliary in New Albany. Survivors include three sons, Carl E. McAdams of Central, Kenneth Wayne McAdams of New Salisbury and Robert Allen McAdams of Corydon; two daughters, Theresa K. Perry of Edwardsville and Rita Moran of New Albany; three sisters, Rhoda Ewing, Helen Burch and Mary Flanigan, all of New Albany; 17 grandchildren; and 26 great-grandchildren. Funeral services were held on Tuesday, December 31, at Gehlbach & Royse’s Georgetown Funeral Home with burial in Edwardsville Cemetery. DORIS MARIE RICE, 87, Georgetown, died Wednesday, January 1, at Harrison County Hospital. She and her husband, the late Paul Baker, owned and operated Bakers Store in Lanesville. She was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church and the Blue Army in Lanesville. Survivors include two sons, Paul T. Baker of Indianapolis and Donn W. Baker of Lanesville; a daughter, Vicki Kemp of Indianapolis; one sister, Mary Alice Beach of Lanesville; six grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. Funeral services were held on Saturday, January 4, at St. Mary Catholic Church in Lanesville with burial in Lanesville Cemetery. Gehlbach & Royse Funeral Home handled the arrangements. JASON L. STONE, 23, Pekin, died Wednesday, January 1, at Wesley Long Hospital in North Carolina. She was a native of New Albany, a project manager for Bank of America in Greensboro, N.C., a member of Unity Church of Today in Graham, N.C. and a member of the Women’s Resource Center in Burlington, N.C. Survivors include her husband, Madison W. “Matt” Klotz; her mother, Connie Hancock of New Albany; three sisters, Therese Bachmann of Jeffersonville, Valarie Russell of Floyds Knobs and Stephanie Cox of Jeffersonville; and a brother, C.T. FRED M. AGAN, 83, Borden, Cemetery with full military graveside rites. CHESTER L. MELTON SR., 83, Floyds Knobs, died Sunday, January 5, at Harrison Health and Rehabilitation Center in Corydon. He was a lifelong resident of Bradford and a retired farmer. He was an active member of St. Michael Catholic Church in Bradford. Survivors include two daughters, Mary Jane Book of Bradford and Mildred Rueger of Evansville; nine sons, Maurice of New Salisbury, Jerry of Corydon, Sam of Floyds Knobs, and Harlan, Jim, Bob, Tony, Bill and Fred of Palmyra; a brother, Bill Uhl of Bradford; 30 grandchildren; and 30 great-grandchildren. HERSCHEL "HERSH" RUSSELL, 83, Georgetown, died Saturday, December 28, at Clark Memorial Hospital. She was a native of Charlestown, a retired custodian of Greater Clark County Schools, a member of the Community Presbyterian Church, VFW Ladies Auxiliary and American Legion Auxiliary. Survivors include her husband, George J. Powell Sr.; two sons, George J. Powell Jr. of Clarksville and Jerry W. Powell of Charlestown; three daughters, Patricia A. Stivers and Debra Miller, both of Lexington, Kentucky and Janet Haworth of Jeffersonville; seven grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren. Funeral services were held on Friday, January 3, at Grayson’s Funeral Home with burial in Charlestown Cemetery. ESTHER MARIE BARE, 87, Charlestown, died Monday, December 30, in Old Hickory, Tenn. He was a native of Evansville and a pharmaceutical sales representative. Survivors include his wife, the former Gerry Shipley; a daughter, Leanne Kane of Old Hickory, Tenn.; four stepchildren; his mother, Anna Heubi Leake of Speed; a brother, Richard Leake; and one grandchild. A native of New Washington, she was the former Addie Fouts, a housewife and a member of the First Baptist Church. Survivors include four sons, Lewis Stoner of Charlestown, Buddy Stoner of Cynthiana, Kentucky, Harold Stoner of North Vernon and Daniel Stoner of New Washington; a daughter, Virginia Haycraft of New Albany; a brother, William Fouts of New Washington; 13 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren. Funeral services were held on Monday, January 6, at Grayson New Washington Funeral Home with burial in Crown Hill Cemetery. CAROLYN ANN McBROOM, 56, New Washington, died Saturday, January 4, at Sellersburg Health and Rehab. He was a native of Casey County, Kentucky, a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II and a chemical operator for E.I. Dupont in Louisville. He was also a home and auto agent for American Family Insurance and a member of the Calvary Christian Church in Sellersburg. Survivors include his wife, the former Eva B. Crum, two daughters, Barbara Albright of Chesterfield, Mo. and Carolyn Lynn of Charlestown; two sisters, Berniece Narr of Louisville and Mabel Fathergill of Augusta, Kentucky; five grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. Funeral services were held on Tuesday, January 7, at Grayson Funeral Home with burial in Charlestown Cemetery. GRETCHEN ANDERSON, 77, Charlestown, died Monday, January 6, at his home. He was a native of Louisville and a Merchant Marine. Survivors include a son, Patrick D. Shanks; his step-mother, Joy Shanks of Louisville; nine brothers, Tony Shanks of New Albany, Patrick Shanks of Charlestown, DuWaine Shanks of New Albany, Major Shanks and Kenneth Shanks, both of Charlestown, Donald Shanks of Camp Lejune, N.C., and Jimmy Daugherty and Michael Daugherty, both of Louisville; and six sisters, Gale Davis of Arizona, Anita Smothers of Henryville, Joan Huff of Willow Shade, Kentucky, Sylvia Nasingo and Donna Shanks, both of Charlestown and Elizabeth Cundiff of Lebanon Junction, Kentucky. Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, January 8, at 3 p.m. at Grayson Funeral Home with burial in Charlestown Cemetery. MARY LOUISE NICHOLSON, 72, Salem, died Wednesday, December 25, and Saturday, December 28 in Veterans Administration Hospital. Maxine was a life resident of Lawrence and Washington Counties, a homemaker who did child care in her home and a former employee of the old Leweb Industries in Salem. Arthur was a life resident of Washington County, a retired employee of the O.P. Link Handle Company in Salem and was a former employee of the old Salem Cheese Plant. He served in World War II as a Flight Officer in the U.S. Army. Both were members of the First Christian Church in Salem. Survivors include two daughters, Denese Anderson of Corona, California and Marla Weston of Holmes Beach, Florida; and four grandchildren. Maxine is also survived by a brother, Calvin Spurgeon of Salem; and two sisters, Marie Benson and Lounell Lyles, both of Salem. Arthur is also survived by a sister, Mary Jackson of Columbus. Funeral services were held on Thursday, January 2, at First Christian Church of Salem with burial in Crown Hill Cemetery. Arthur was given full military honors at graveside. TRUEBLOOD, 91, Salem, died Thursday, January 2, at her home. She was a homemaker and a member of the Blue River Christian Church and the Salem Chapter Order of the Eastern Star #286. Survivors include a son, Danny W. Ledford of Salem; four daughters, Evangeline “Sissy” Ledford of Salem, Alice Faye Voyles of Vallonia, Phyllis Spears of Pennington Gap, Va. and Carol Jean Sanders of Salem. Funeral services were held on Saturday, January 4, at Hughes-Taylor Funeral Home with burial in Crown Hill Cemetery. JOSEPH FITZGERALD LANE, 57, Jeffersonville, died Wednesday, January 1, at Providence Retirement Home in New Albany. She was a member of the Salem Presbyterian Church, the Retired Teachers Association, the Women’s Study Club and many other Civic and Professional Associations. She was a native of Ferdinand and a retired music teacher and professional musician. Survivors include her aunt, Helen P. Gill and a cousin, Helen Mead, both of Salem, who cared for her. A memorial service was planned for a later date with burial in Valhalla Memorial Park in Bloomington. REV. ROBERT F. BOWLING, 80, Scottsburg, died on Sunday, December 29, at Scott Memorial Hospital. Born near Deputy, he was a retired employee of Cummins Engine Company and a former printer at Morgan Foods Inc. He was a 50-year member of the Kent, formerly Deputy lodge, Schmidlapp Lodge 408, F&AM, and a member of Scottsburg United Methodist Church and the Over 55 Scottsburg Bowling League. Survivors include his widow, the former Maud Roy Breedlove; three sons, Larry J. Gray of Commiskey, Phillip A. Gray of Johnson City, Tn., and Brent L. Gray of North Vernon; and a grandson. The funeral was conducted at his church on Wednesday, January 1. The Rev. Douglas Wallace officiated. Burial was in Scottsburg Cemetery. Born in Champaign, Il., she was a homemaker and a member of Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church in Franklin. Survivors include a son, James Betts of Greenwood; three daughters, Mary Abel of Trafalgar, Sandra Mudd of Franklin and Betty Phair of Whiteland; a sister, Cleatis McInturff; 12 grandchildren; and 16 great-grandchildren. The funeral was conducted on Tuesday, December 31, at the Vandiver-Tudor Funeral Home in Franklin. Dr. E. Richard Lane officiated. Burial was in Greenlawn Cemetery. DALE J. NELSON, 83, Bedford, born in Springfield, Il., but lived most of her life in and around Scott County. She was a retired clerk with the former Dorsey’s Drug Store, Spann’s 5&10 and the old V&V Store. She was a member of Zoah Christian Church near Scottsburg. Survivors include a brother, Robert Swartz of Grammar; a sister, Leona Kyger of Crawfordsville; and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services were conducted Monday, December 30, at the Collins Funeral Home in Scottsburg. Bro. Paul E. Martin officiated. Burial was in Little York Cemetery. MARY M. LEWIS GARRETT, 83, Butlerville, died on Friday, December 27, at Scott Villa Living Center, where she had been residing. She was Cemetery in Washington County. FRED JUNIOR "J.R." BUTLER, 76, Vallonia, born in Clearspring and was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II. He was a retired employee of the Kieffer Paper Mill in Brownstown and a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1083 in Crothersville. Survivors include two sons, Fred W. Butler of Brownstown and Brian Butler of Vallonia; five daughters, Pam Butler of Iowa, Regina Gambrel and Nancy Nicholson, both of Vallonia, Rhonda Hien of Crothersville and Deanna Cline of Scottsburg; two brothers, Donnie Butler of North Vernon and Bobby Butler of Greeley, Co.; 16 grandchildren; and ten great-grandchildren.
