Lura Aldene Cline
BREMEN - Lifetime Marshall County resident, Lura Aldene Cline, 85, residing in the LaPaz/Bremen area since 1947, died at her residence, 10850 U.S. 6 West, in the company of her devoted husband, at 2 a.m. on Thursday, April 19, 2001. Lura had been in failing health for the past four years and died of an apparent heart attack.
She was born in Linkville on August 24, 1915, the daughter of James Lester and Edna Ruth Kreighbaum Wade. She was a graduate of LaPaz High School with the class of 1934.
On November 7, 1936, in Syracuse, Ind., Lura and Nelson D. Cline were married. A homemaker, she farmed with her husband. They were former Farm Bureau Co-op members. Talking with her friends on the telephone was a favorite pastime of Lura’s. She was a homebody and had lived a Christian life. In times past, she liked to bake for friends and family.
She had been a member of the Walkerton United Pentecostal Church for many years.
Lura is survived by her husband and their daughter and son-in-law, Julia R. and Greg W. Davis, DeKalb, Illinois. Two granddaughters, Dawn and Haley Davis also survive. A sister living in LaPaz, Vivian Jean and her husband, Harry Shidler, and Bremen brother and sisters-in-laws: Wilfred L. and Elfreda Cline and Helen Klinedinst survive as well, together with several nieces and nephews.
Lura was preceded in death by her parents.
Friends may visit with the family on Friday evening, April 20, 2001, from 6 to 8 p.m., and again on Saturday, April 21, 2001, from 1 to 2 p.m. at the Johnson-Danielson Funeral Home, 1100 N. Michigan St., Plymouth Ind.
Funeral services for Lura will follow the Saturday visitation at 2 p.m. in the funeral home. The Rev. Arnold Smith, pastor of the Walkerton United Pentecostal Church. Burial will be in Oakhill Cemetery, Plymouth.

Elizabeth (Morris) Bailey
Died: 1/1/2011
ARGOS - Elizabeth (Morris) Bailey, 75, of State Road 10, Argos, died Jan. 1, 2011 at 1:01 a.m. at Saint Joseph Regional Medical Center, Plymouth. She had been in declining health for several years.
She was born June 30, 1935 in Morgan County, Ky., to Cletus and Alta (Sargent) Morris and lived in the Argos community since 1984.
She married David F. Wallace Sr. they were divorced later. She then married Clifford Bailey in Winchester, Ky. In 1984. They both preceded her in death.
She was a seamstress at Hart, Schaffner & Marx in Rochester, retiring after 28 years.
She is survived by four daughters: Darlene Barcus and husband Robert Sr. of Argos, Cathy Martz and husband William of Tippecanoe, Pamela Bodine of Knox, and Sheri Becker of Leesburg; four sons: John Wallace and wife Judy of Tippecanoe, David F. Wallace Jr. of Bourbon, Jesse J. Wallace of Rochester, and Donald L. Wallace and wife Judy of Rochester; nine grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; a brother, Sam Morris and wife Alverta of Pennsylvania; three sisters: Cora Kruzick, Nola Conley, and Sue Penley, all of Plymouth; and half-brother, Frank Morris and wife Jackie of Kentucky.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husbands; a son, William Ray Wallace; two brothers; two sisters; grandson, James Wilson; and granddaughter, Sarah Casey.
Friends may visit with the family Tuesday, Jan. 4 from 3 to 7 p.m. at the Earl-Grossman Funeral Home, 208 N. Michigan St., Argos, and one hour prior to the funeral service Wednesday.
Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 5 at the funeral home with Chaplain Tom Padberg of the Center for Hospice Care officiating.
Burial will follow at Walnut Church of the Brethren Cemetery, Argos.
Arrangements have been entrusted with the Earl-Grossman Funeral Home, Argos.

Floyd E. Burkett
A proud pioneer of the telecommunications industry and a lifetime resident of the Plymouth area, Floyd E. Burkett, 95, who lived for the past 71 years at 612 E. LaPorte St., Plymouth, has died.
In failing health for the past two years, Floyd died at 11 a.m. on Sunday, July 8, 2001, in Millers Merry Manor, Plymouth, where he had been a resident for just over a year.
Born in Culver, Ind., the son of George and Pearl Wolfe Burkett, on April 21, 1906, Floyd attended grammar school in Burr Oak and was a member of the West High School class of 1924.
On June 28, 1930, in Plymouth, he married his high school sweetheart, Mary I. Welborn, his bride of 71 years.
Floyd was considered to be an authority on the history of northern Indiana telephones by everyone in the business.
He could fix anything. He said he started at the bottom of the business. As a "squeak" or groundsman, he dug postholes and set poles by hand. His first job was to string a line of eight copper wires from Warsaw to Knox.
Floyd started moving up; climbing the poles as a linesman and cable splicer.
During World War II, Floyd was in a profession vital to the welfare of the country and was exempt from service. United Telephone went to war. They handled, among other things, the Western Union.
Floyd was District Manager and Traffic Engineer for United Telephone for 42 years, retiring in 1969.
He has always kept busy, doing his own yard work and, with the neighbor’s help, took care of the snow until just a few years ago.
He enjoyed deer hunting in Montana and traveling to Canada each year for fishing trips until his age of 92. He taught each of his great-grandchildren how to fish. The Burketts spent many winters in Texas and then Florida.
Floyd had a great interest in his family and his church. A lifetime member of the Church of the Brethren, most of his years at the Plymouth church, where he was a former trustee and member of the Loyal Builder’s Class.
A past president of the Plymouth Lion’s Club, he was a life member and past president of the Independent Telephone Pioneers and a life member of the National Association of Independent Telephone Pioneers. He was also a life member of the Marshall County Historical Society and for twenty years, a Plymouth Fire Department volunteer.
Floyd is survived by his devoted wife, Mary, and by their two daughters and their families: Joyce E. and Frank Howard, Plymouth and children: Debbie Caudell, Springville, Ind., and Susan Wendel, Plymouth. Daughter, Carol A. Magoon-Blane, her husband, Mark of Indianapolis, Ind. and her children: Julie Desaulniers, Manitoulin Island, Canada, Bonnie Helton, Indianapolis, Maggie Magoon, Athens, Ohio, Ryan Magoon, and Andrew Magoon, Vancouver, British Columbia. Eleven great-grandchildren also survive along with a sister, Rachel Wenino, Plymouth.
Floyd was preceded in death by his a brother, Clarence Burkett.
Friends may visit with the family to celebrate the life of Floyd Burkett on Tuesday, July 10, 2001, from 4 to 8 p.m., in the Johnson-Danielson Funeral Home, 1100 N. Michigan St., Plymouth.
Visitation will be continued for one hour prior to the service at the Plymouth Church of the Brethren, 1130 N. Michigan St., on Wednesday, July 11, 2001, at 11 a.m. The Rev. Dave Kerkove, pastor of the church, will officiate.
Burial will be in New Oakhill Cemetery, Plymouth.
Memorial gifts in Floyd’s memory may be made to the church or to a charity of the donor’s choice.
Bonnie Jean Arnett
Died: 1/2/2011
WALKERTON – Bonnie Jean Arnett, 58, of Thorn Road, Walkerton, went to be with her Lord at 9:39 a.m. Sunday, Jan. 2, 2011 in her residence after a courageous battle with cancer.
She was born in Florida March 5, 1952 to Curtis and Bonnie Ropp Kindig. Bonnie worked as a laborer for eight years at A.M. General.
She enjoyed gardening, growing flowers, and had a beautiful garden pond. Bonnie’s biggest joy in life was her family and spending as much time with them as possible.
Bonnie was a member of the Plymouth Wesleyan Church and the Local UAW.
Bonnie is survived by her husband, Rob Arnett; a daughter, Tina Lynn (Rick) Varga of Granger; and two sons, Scott Bonnell and girlfriend Eve English, South Bend and Jamie (Shera) Dolph, LaPorte.
Her father, Curtis Kindig, Florida, survives; and two brothers also survive her: Donnie Kindig of Florida, and Brian Ropp of Rochester. Half-sister, Gloria Labrenz also survives.
She was preceded in death by her mother, Bonnie Shiver.
Friends are invited to share memories with Bonnie’s family Wednesday, Jan. 5, from 3:30 to 6:30 p.m. in the Johnson-Danielson Funeral Home 1100 N. Michigan St., Plymouth.
Funeral services for Bonnie will be held at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday following visitation in the funeral home. Pastor Ed Friberg, Associate Pastor with Plymouth Wesleyan Church will officiate.

Lewis "Jim" Harris

KOONTZ LAKE - Lewis "Jim" Harris, 90, died Sunday, Jan. 2, 2011 in Hospice House, South Bend.
He is survived by his wife, Bettie; daughters, Linda Clark of Guilford, and Luana (Frank) Simpkins of Clearwater, Fla.; sons, Terry (Nancy) Harris of Koontz Lake and Roger (Helen) Harris of Indianapolis; 11 grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren. There was no visitation.
Graveside services were held at 11 a.m. (ET) Tuesday, Jan. 4 at Porter Rae Cemetery, North Liberty.

Nancy E. Simpson
Died: 1/2/2011
CULVER - Nancy E. Simpson, 85, of Culver, passed away Jan. 2, 2011 at the St. Joseph Regional Medical Center in Plymouth.
Nancy was born June 9, 1925 in Goshen, one of five children born to Isaac and Lulu (Sparklin) Mummert. After graduating from Goshen High School, she married James Simpson Aug. 15, 1943 in Goshen. Together they raised three children and a foster son.
Nancy really enjoyed gardening and playing bridge with her friends as well as spending time with her grandchildren.
Nancy is survived by her son, James (Sandra) Simpson II of Stuart, Fla.; daughters, Susan Simpson of Plymouth, and Sarah Tobias of Culver; foster son, William Binkley of Goshen; grandchildren: Rebecca Salary of Culver, Wes Tobias of West Liberty, Ky., Stephanie Clark of Coral Springs, Fla., Scott Simpson of Sebastian, Fla., Sara Adams of Tennessee, and Stephen Simpson of Stuart, Fla.; and 15 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, James; parents; a brother; three sisters; and a granddaughter, Madison Tobias.
There will be no services or visitation.

Linda E. Gibson

NORTH LIBERTY - Linda E. Gibson, 87, of North Liberty and Walkerton, died Monday, Jan. 3, 2011 in Richfield, Utah.
She is survived by her children: Pamela Jean (Larry) Forster of Richfield, Utah, Kathryn Louise (Brian) Shidler of Mishawaka, and Luther Edwin Gibson of Riverside, Calif.; sister, Susan Estelle (Don) Taylor of Yucalpa, Calif.; brother, James Alan (Jan) Miller of Argos; four grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
Visitation will take place from 3 to 6 p.m. (EST) Tuesday, Jan. 11 at Nusbaum-Elkin Funeral Home, 408 Roosevelt Road, Walkerton.
Funeral services will take place at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 12 at the funeral home.
Burial will follow at Patton Cemetery, LaPorte.
Kenneth A. Loper

NORTH LIBERTY - Kenneth A. Loper, 70, died Monday, Jan. 3 at his residence.
He is survived by his wife, Judith L. Loper of North Liberty; two sons, Scott (Karen) Loper of Sierra Vista, Ariz. And Kevin W. Loper of North Liberty; grandchildren; father Kenneth Loper of Michigan; three brothers; two sisters; and two surrogate brothers (in-law).
Per Ken’s wishes, cremation has taken place. There will be a memorial service held Saturday, Jan. 8 at North Liberty United Methodist Church, 103 S. Main St., North Liberty, at 2 p.m. with Pastor Judith Adams officiating.
Nubaum-Elkin Funeral Home, 40 Roosevelt Road, Walkerton, is in charge of arrangements.

Doris Eileen Cooper
Died: 1/4/2011
MENTONE - Doris Eileen Cooper, 80, of Mentone, died at 8:23 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 4, 2011 at the Bremen Health Care Center of Bremen.
She was born Aug. 23, 1930 in Etna Green, to Glen Snider and Ethel M. Easterday. She was married Oct. 15, 1950 in Mentone, to David L. Cooper who passed away Jan. 31, 2000.
Doris was the youngest of six children. She graduated from Mentone High School in 1949. She made Mentone her home for most of her adult life, spending time in Michigan as a young mother and Air Force wife and several warm and wonderful winters in Sebring, Fla. During retirement.
She worked as a secretary and telephone operator in early years. She devoted herself to her family as a stay-at-home wife and mother while her three children were small, and again did secretarial work. Later, she joined her husband and in-laws in the family business, Cooper Dept. Store in Mentone. When they closed the store, she ran her own craft and T-shirt business in Rochester. She also managed her own craft shows in the Logansport Mall and Marion Mall.
When semi-retired, she and her husband delivered vans for Explorer Van of Warsaw, driving to many locations throughout the United States. She was a longtime member of the Mentone United Methodist Church and was best known for her sense of humor and her feisty attitude.
She loved doing crafts in her spare time and was most fond of being a "snow-bird" in Florida.
She is survived by daughters, Debra Spencer of Mentone, and Denise and husband Ray Driver of Plymouth; son, Daniel Cooper and wife Katherine of Baltimore, Md.; three grandchildren: David Spencer of Rochester, Dustin Spencer of Warsaw, and Deanna (Spencer) Wilkins of Ft. Wayne; two great-grandchildren, Lathen and Landen Spencer; and sisters, Mary Thomas of South Bend, and Kate Whetstone of Ft. Wayne.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; two brothers, Harold Snider and Hollis Snider; and sister, Wylon Bowers.
Visitation will take place 4 to 7 p.m., Friday, Jan. 7 at King Memorial Home, Mentone.
Funeral services will take place at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 8 at King Memorial Home 101 N. Tucker St., Mentone.
Rev. Amber Karkosky-Litten will officiate.
Burial will follow at Mentone Cemetery, Mentone.
