Gerald R. “Jerry” Lehman
A lifetime resident of Marshall County, Gerald R. “Jerry” Lehman, living at 12307 11th Rd., Plymouth, for the past 16 years, died of natural causes at 3:32 a.m. on Friday, May 18, 2001, eight days shy of his 89th birthday. Jerry, a patient for five days, died at the Woodlawn Hospital, Rochester. He was born in Wakarusa, Ind., on May 26, 1912, the son of Lloyd and Zola Truex Lehman. He graduated from LaPaz High School with the class of 1932. He attended barber school and later had a barbering shop in Bremen. On August 5, 1933, Jerry and Emma Josephine Becker, a high school classmate; were married in Elkhart, Ind. Jerry first worked as a farm laborer. He barbered for awhile and then went into residential construction as Lehman’s Construction. He became a union carpenter and worked at the Bridgeman Power Plant, at that same time he operated a mower repair service. Following his retirement, he worked at Miller’s Coast to Coast and then Ace Hardware as a floor salesman where he was known to many in the area. Jerry loved gardening, both flowers and vegetables. He enjoyed watching birds, fishing and working with wood and stained glass projects. He had attended the Sunrise Chapel. Jerry is survived by his wife of almost sixty-eight years, a son, Douglas D. Lehman, San Antonio, Texas, and a daughter, Linda J. and Larry Gibson, Plymouth. Five grandchildren also survive. They are: Shane Lehman, Lance Lehman, Jacqueline Richardson, Kenneth Gibson and Suzanne Gibson. Two great-grandchildren and a sister-in-law, Juanita Lehman, Plymouth, survive as well. Jerry was preceded in death by his parents, a great-grandson, Michael Richardson and a brother, Donald Lehman. Friends are invited to visit with the family on Sunday, May 20, 2001, from 3 to 7 p.m. in the Johnson-Danielson Funeral Home, 1100 N. Michigan St., Plymouth. Funeral services for Jerry will be in the funeral home at 1:30 p.m. on Monday, May 21, 2001. The Rev. Charles Krieg, pastor of the Pretty Lake Trinity United Methodist Church, will officiate. Burial will be in New Oakhill Cemetery, Plymouth. Memorial gifts in Jerry’s memory may be made to World Vision, P.O. Box 78481 Tacoma, Washington 98481-8481.
Eva R. Lemert
A dynamic professional business woman, Eva R. Lemert, 97, and lifetime Plymouth resident, has died. Eva, who drove a pink Cadillac with the license plate, “Foxy Lady, ” died of natural causes, on 2:10 p.m. on Friday, July 13, 2001. In failing health for the past eight years, she died in Pilgrim Manor Nursing Home, 222 Parkview Drive, Plymouth. Born on the family homestead on 11th Rd., Plymouth, Eva was the daughter of William H. and Nancy V. Bowell Reed. She attended Inwood grade schools, graduating from Lincoln high school in Plymouth in 1920. On Oct. 9, 1920, Eva and Loren E. Lemert were married in Plymouth. Loren died on Dec. 13, 1962. After she was married, Eva worked in the first Montgomery Ward Store for a salary of $12 for a sixty hour week. Later she worked in the Recorder’s office in the Court House. She and her spouse owned and operated the Marshall County Sale Barn-Livestock Auctions north of Plymouth. They were also agents for John Deere Farm Equipment and operated Oldsmobile Cadillac Sales and Service from 1942 through 1950. In 1948, she confidently ran the Lemert Engineering firm with her spouse until his death, continuing as president of the company until her retirement in 1986. Some of the innovative products developed by Lemert Engineering were: Sea Trim Afterplanes, Airflex Riveters, Selectrol Water Injection System and the Level Air Shock Absorbers. She was a horsewoman and the first secretary of the Marshall County Horse Association, serving for six years. She showed horses in the Three and five Gaited as well as the Five Harness Classes in Plymouth and throughout the state. Eva was a past matron of the Eastern Star #26 and Past Mother Advisor of Rainbow Girls, serving many additional years as Advisor. She was a Past Regent of the Daughters of the American Revolution, a member of Business and Professional Women, Marshall county Historical Society, a member of the Farm Bureau and the Chamber of Commerce and was written up in “Who’s Who.” Eva loved traveling and fishing with her family in Canada and Florida. She is survived by two daughters: Bonita M. Gehring, Plymouth, and Sue E. and Mike Gill, Warsaw. Six grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren also survive. In addition to her parents and her husband, Eva was preceded in death by a brother, James Reed and a sister, Helen Stockman. Visitation with her family in a celebration of Eva’s remarkable life will be on Monday, July 16, 2001, from noon to 2 p.m. in the Johnson-Danielson Funeral Home, 1100 N. Michigan St., Plymouth. An Eastern Star Service will follow visitation at 1:45 p.m. and the funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. The Rev. Father John Schramm, pastor of St. Thomas Episcopal Church of which she was a lifetime member, will officiate. Burial will be in Oakhill Cemetery, Plymouth. Memorials in Eva’s memory may be made to St. Thomas Church or to a charity of the donor’s choice.
Jane Levett
Jane Levett, devoted wife, mother and grandmother, 300 Baker St., Plymouth, a resident of Plymouth since 1956, coming from Allegan, Michigan, has died. Jane died on Wednesday, July 4, 2001, at 8:05 a.m. in St. Joseph Medical Center, Plymouth. She was 77 years old. Her enduring strength and courage, her dedication to the highest principles and her willingness to help those around her, will be long remembered by her family and friends. She was born Betty Jane Arnold on July 25, 1923, in Marshall, Mich., the daughter of Bates W. and Elizabeth Arnold. She graduated from Marshall, Mich. High School with the class of 1941. She attended Michigan State University, which is where she met Milan J. Levett, her husband. Their 56th wedding anniversary would have been on July 7, 2001. The couple was married in Junction City, Kansas, where Milan, in the service at the time, was stationed. Jane was active in the family business from 1960 to 1980. She served as the Center Township Assessor of Marshall County from 1983 to 1995 and remained involved in the Republican Party. Her family and friends were important to Jane. She was a wonderful cook and excellent baker and enjoyed sharing this gift with her friends and church. She enjoyed traveling and watching athletic events. A longtime active member of the First United Methodist Church, Plymouth, Jane was involved in many church groups and activities, freely giving of her time to worthy causes. For many years she served on the church Memorial Committee. Jane is survived by her husband, Milan, and by a daughter, Sue A. and Dick Stinson, Plymouth, and a grandson, Eric Stinson, Crawfordsville, Ind. Two sons and their families also survive: Mark A., and Marabeth Levett of Columbus, Ind., and their three daughters: Jenny Levett, Indianapolis, Amy and Mitch Unger, Evanston, Ill., and Megan Levett, Columbus, Ind. Paul E. Levett and his daughter, Whitney and son, Adam, all of Plymouth, survive as well. A sister- in- law, Gloria Arnold of Marshall, Mich., and several nieces and nephews also survive. Her brother Edward Arnold preceded her in death. Visitation with the family will be from 5 to 8 p.m. on Friday, July 6, 2001, in the Johnson-Danielson Funeral Home, 1100 N. Michigan St., Plymouth. The Dr. E. Dean Fager, of the First United Methodist Church, will officiate at memorial services for Jane at 11 a.m. on Saturday, July 7, 2001, at the church, 400 N. Michigan St., Plymouth. Memorial gifts in Jane’s memory may be made to the church or to the Marshall County Hospice.
Dorothy M. Lohse
PLYMOUTH, IND. – Dorothy M. Lohse, 79, a resident of Walnut Creek Care Facility, Plymouth, the past two years, died of natural causes at 5:50 a.m. Thursday, April 26, 2001 in the company of her family at the care facility. Dorothy had resided at 14027 12th Rd. Plymouth, coming from Hammond, Ind. with her husband in 1947. Born February 2, 1922 in Hammond, the daughter of Shirley Tratebas and Margaret Klemsman Tratebas, Dorothy graduated from Hammond Tech School. On August 23, 1941, in Hammond, she was married to Wilbert H. Lohse. Wilbert died on October 10, 1993. Dorothy was a homemaker who enjoyed raising her family and living a Christian life. She was a member of the Calvary Lutheran church of Plymouth since 1947. One favorite personal past time was embroidery. Survivors include three sons and one daughter. Her sons and daughter-in-laws are; Clyde J. and Barbara Lohse of Argos, Ind. James W. and Carol Lohse of Leesburg, Ind. and David L. and Carol Lohse of Plymouth. Her daughter Shirley M. Hardesty resides in Huntington, Ind. Eleven grandchildren, twenty great-grandchildren and one great-great-granddaughter also survive. She was preceded in death by her parents, her spouse and a son-in-law, Lloyd Hardesty. Visitation with her family will be on Friday, April 27, 2001, from 4 – 8 p.m. in the Johnson – Danielson Funeral Home, 1100 N. Michigan St., Plymouth and on Saturday, April 28, 2001 from 9:30 to 11 a.m. at the Calvary Lutheran Church, 1314 N. Michigan St., Plymouth where services will be held at 11 a.m. Pastor Steven Resner and Vicar Robert Bower will officiate. Burial will be in the New Oakhill Cemetery, Plymouth.
Clara M. Mangun
Clara M. Mangun, 80, a Plymouth resident most of her life, formerly of W. Jackson St., died at 7:15 a.m. on Thursday, Nov. 29, 2001. Clara, a resident of Miller’s Merry Manor, 600 Oakhill Ave., Plymouth, for the past two years, died at the nursing home following an extended illness. She was born on Jan. 12, 1921, in Plymouth, the daughter of John M. and Mary Ellen Linderman Hill. She attended area schools. On Dec. 3, 1940, in Knox, Clara and Robert W. Mangun were married. Robert died on Aug. 31, 1993. A homemaker, Clara enjoyed the time spent raising her family. She did handwork, especially embroidery and quilting. She appreciated the outdoors, flower and vegetable gardening. Raised in the First Baptist faith, she had an extensive collection of quotes and inspirational thoughts. A stay-to-home person, Clara enjoyed 50s’ and old “bluegrass” music and working jigsaw puzzles. She is survived by two sons and three daughters, 25 grandchildren and 33 great-grandchildren. Her children are: Donald W. and Maria Mangun, Milford, Ind., Paul G. and Stephanie Mangun, Mentone, Ind., Rosemary Patrick and Pamela I. Melton, both of Plymouth and Wanda M. and Gorman Patrick, Michigan City, Ind. Clara was preceded in death by her parents, an infant daughter, Cindy, and two sons, Eugene and Ralph Mangun. A grandson, Mike Mangun and a great-grandson, Bobby Jo Patrick have also died, together with two brothers, Ralph and Marion Hill. Visitation with the family will be on Sunday, Dec. 2, 2001, from 2 to 5 p.m. in the Johnson-Danielson Funeral Home, 1100 N. Michigan St., Plymouth. Funeral services for Clara will be officiated by Rev. Tom Padberg, Chaplain for the Marshall County Hospice, at 10 a.m. on Monday, Dec. 3, 2001 in the funeral home. Burial will be in Oakhill Cemetery, Plymouth. Memorial gifts in Clara’s memory may be made to the Marshall County Hospice.
Dorothy M. Marks
Dorothy M. Marks, 79, 4076 Lipton St., Bremen, Ind., died of natural causes at the Lu Ann Nursing Home, Nappanee, Ind., at 7:35 p.m. on Friday, August 24, 2001. A longtime Marshall County resident, having grown up in Battle Creek, Mich. She was born on May 20, 1922 in Lakeview, Mich. near Battle Creek and adopted as the daughter of Harry and Alice Barrett. Dorothy graduated from Battle Creek High School. From there she attended Business School and became a secretary. On July 11, 1942, Dorothy and Glen A. Marks were married in Bryan, Ohio. Glen died on November 21, 1997. Dorothy first worked at the Lone Star Boat Company of Bremen. She was also employed at Berkey Auto Parts in Plymouth and at one time was a secretary for the Costello Auction Service. She retired in 1988 from AAA Construction, Bremen, where she assisted in disaster clean up. She bowled with several Bremen and LaPaz bowling leagues and enjoyed working crossword puzzles and doing embroidery work. She was an avid reader and enjoyed her trips to Florida. Dorothy adored cats and had a collection of ceramic felines. She was a member of the Bremen V.F.W. Ladies Auxiliary, # 8972. Dorothy is survived by two sons and a daughter. Her sons are Dale A. and Lyla Marks, Lake of the Woods, and Lyle D. and Sue Marks, South Bend. Her daughter is Marie S. and Dale Holderman, Bremen. Twelve grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild, together with several nieces and nephews also survive. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband and a son, Nelson L. Marks, who died in 1994. Visitation with Dorothy’s family will be on Monday, August 27, 2001, from 5 to 8 p.m. in the Johnson-Danielson Funeral Home, 1100 N. Michigan St., Plymouth. Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, August 28, 2001, at 10 a.m. in the funeral home. The Rev. Marlin Debban, of the Trinity Assembly of God, Lakeville, where Dorothy attended services, will officiate. Burial will be in Oakhill Cemetery, Plymouth. Memorial gifts in Dorothy’s memory may be made to a charity of the donor’s choice.
Anna D. Martin
Anna D. Martin, 90, a longtime resident of W. Washington St., Plymouth, living in Miller’s Merry Manor for the past nine years, died there of natural causes at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 22, 1901. Born the daughter of Charles “J.C.” and Ella Reimers Dahlke in Ellicottville, New York, on May 12, 1911, Anna was educated in Ellicottville schools. She lived in New Carlisle, Ind., prior to moving to Plymouth in 1948. On April 12, 1930, Anna and Charles F. Martin were married in Rochester, Ind. Charles died on Dec. 15, 1975. A Licensed Practical Nurse, Anna formerly held a position with the Mayflower Nursing Home and did private duty home-care. Anna’s grandchildren and her church, the Blissville Church of the Brethren, of which she was a member for over 40 years, were of great-importance to her. She is survived by a daughter-in-law, Marjorie M. Martin of Plymouth, seven grandchildren, 29 great- and 27 great-great-grandchildren. The grandchildren are: Ehler and Barbara Martin, Rochester; Alan and Donna Martin and Charles and Diane Martin, all of Argos; Tony Martin, Elkhart; John and Brenda Martin, Rogers, Ark.; Bruce Martin and friend Mary Ellen, Baldwinsville, N.Y.; and Kathy and Al Schaeffner, Macy, Ind. Two sisters, Ella Robbins, Alexander, N.Y., and Ruth Casella, Salamanca, N.Y., also survive. Anna was preceded in death by, her husband, two sons, John W. and Charles W. Martin, three sisters and five brothers. Four grandchildren have also died. Visitation will be in the Johnson-Danielson Funeral Home, 1100 N. Michigan St., Plymouth, on Saturday, Nov. 24, 2001, from noon to 2 p.m. Funeral services will follow visitation at 2 p.m. in the funeral home. The Rev. Paul McBride, former pastor of the Blissville Church of the Brethren, will officiate. Burial will be in New Oakhill Cemetery, Plymouth. Memorial gifts in Anna’s memory may be made to the Blissville Church of the Brethren.
