Indiana Marriages, 1780-1992

Shirley M. Morlock
Lifetime resident, Shirley M. Morlock, 87, 18374 W. 9th. Rd., Plymouth, died from natural causes at 10:50 p.m. on Monday, Dec. 10, 2001, in the Pilgrim Manor Nursing Center. Born on Nov. 24, 1914, in Marshall County, Shirley was the daughter of Lloyd and Ruth Abair. She graduated from Lincoln High School with the class of 1933. On Feb. 13, 1937, Shirley and Floyd A. Morlock were married in Plymouth. A homemaker and mother to their children, Shirley helped her husband on their farm. She was an avid quilter and enjoyed sewing and gardening. She spent most of her free time embroidering, stitching or doing something with her hands. Shirley was a member of the Plymouth Wesleyan Church and was a past member of the Pretty Lake Home Extension Club. For many years she was a volunteer with the Marshall County 4-H Clubs. Floyd A. Morlock, Shirley’s husband of over 65 years, and their four daughters, twelve grandchildren and twelve great-grandchildren survive her death. Her daughters and their husbands are: Lillian and Dean Slonaker, Plymouth, Ind., Charlotte and Jim Barnhart and Nancy and Jerry Barnhart, all of Bourbon, Ind., and Jane and Owen Row, Monroeville, Ind. Three sisters also survive: Dollie and Warren Hoover, Plymouth, Ind., Bea and Thomas Mertens, Muncie, Ind., and Alice and Dick Opal, Richmond, Ind. Shirley was preceded in death by her parents, a daughter, Nina, a brother, Donald, and a sister, Virginia. Visitation with her family will be from 3 to 8 p.m. in the Johnson-Danielson Funeral Home, 1100 N. Michigan St., Plymouth, on Thursday, Dec. 13, 2001, and for one hour prior to services in the church on Friday. At 10:30 a.m. on Friday, Dec. 14, 2001, the Reverends Robert Vardaman and Les Kephart of the Plymouth Wesleyan Church, 11203 S. Michigan St., will conduct funeral services at the church. Burial will be in New Oakhill Cemetery, Plymouth. Memorial gifts in Shirley’s name may be made to the Plymouth Wesleyan Church.

Joyce P. Morris
An area resident most of her life, Joyce P. Morris, 62, 11240 9A Road, Plymouth, rose up into the loving embrace of our Heavenly Father at 5:50 p.m., on July 6, 2001. As was her wish, she died at home in the loving company of her family and members of the Marshall County Hospice team. Born in Gary, Ind., on July 6, 1939, she was the daughter of William and Pearl Erickson. Raised by her aunt and uncle, Alvin and Hulda Holm from the age of five until adulthood, Joyce fondly remembered and was grateful to the couple. She said that she looked forward to greeting them in heaven. On Nov. 2, 1958, Joyce and Richard C. Morris were married in Tyner, Ind. Joyce raised her children while working alongside her spouse in the family-owned business. Hardworking, she kept the books and managed the office, first at Morris Motors and Carwash to the present Gold Coast Motors. After helping her family to become happy and secure adults, Joyce gave her maternal love and skills to her grandchildren. She experienced pure joy in spending time with them and participating in their activities. For the past 17 years, “Grandma” has beamed with the pride, joy and love in having Kara, Rick, Sam, Matt, Holly, Emily, Sydney and Grace. Joyce had great respect and love for her daughtersin-law, Monica, Lynn and Paula, enjoying a special relationship with each. This past year, Joyce became a member of the Koontz Lake Missionary Church, Walkerton, Ind. The spirit of God, the strength of the ministry and the love of the congregation served to strengthen her faith and offered her great comfort. Among her favorite hobbies were decorating cakes for family and friends and collecting photos of her family. She was also an avid reader and a firm supporter of the Plymouth Public Library. Joyce is survived by her husband, Richard and her three sons and their wives: Michael and Paula Morris, James and Monica Morris and Joseph and Lynn Morris. A daughter, Julie Morris, eight grandchildren, a brother, Joseph William Erickson and many nieces and nephews survive as well. She was preceded in death by her parents, her aunt and uncle, Alvin and Hulda Holm, a sister, Mary Ann Allen, and a nephew, William G. Erickson. Family services were held on Monday, July 9, 2001. Entombment was in New Oakhill Cemetery. Johnson-Danielson Funeral Home, 1100 N. Michigan St., Plymouth, was in charge of arrangements. Memorial gifts in Joyce’s memory may be made to the Koontz Lake Missionary Church of Walkerton, Ind., to Friends of the Library, Plymouth or to the Marshall County Hospice.

Grace M. Baker Nifong
Grace M. Baker Nifong, 88, a resident of Pilgrim Manor Nursing Home, Plymouth, since Dec. 14th., died there of natural causes, at 10:55 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 22, 2001. Grace was formerly a 60-year resident of South Bend. Born in Plymouth on Aug. 30, 1913, she was a twin daughter of Samuel P. and Alta M. Foreman Baker. Her twin sister, Gladys Gardner, died on May 29, 1991. Grace graduated from West High School with the class of 1932. Completing her education at South Bend Business College, she worked for Associates of South Bend before becoming a mother and homemaker. She later worked for 16 years as the office manager of the First United Methodist Church of South Bend, retiring in 1979. Thereafter she donated her time to charities such as the Thrift Store in Mishawaka. Grace was an active member of Grace United Methodist Church of South Bend. She enjoyed visiting shut-in members. She also was interested in genealogy and was a member of the Schuyler Colfax Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution. A talented china painter, she enjoyed painting tea sets and dishes for her family and friends. She loved to travel and had visited Europe, the Holy Land, and the state of Hawaii. On May 9, 1938, Grace and Rolland C. Matz of Tyner were married in Plymouth; Roland died in 1963. Seventeen years later, on June 21, 1980, she married Harold R. Fisher of Fort Seybert, West Virginia. He died on Feb. 11, 1999, after a lengthy illness. Grace married Cyrus Nifong of Plymouth on June 12, 1999. The couple lived at 9331 Quince Rd., Plymouth. Grace is remembered for her strong sense of family. Following the traditions set by her mother, Grace delighted in bringing the whole family together for celebrations. She is revered for being a wonderful wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, aunt and friend to many. Grace is survived by her husband, Cyrus, and her son and daughter-in-law, Karl R. and Barbara Matz of McPherson, Kan. Her pride and joy, two granddaughters, also survive. They are: Michelle K. and Todd Huddle, McPherson, Kan. and Jennifer R. and Mike Vermeulen together with two great-grandsons, Jacob and Andrew Vermeulen, all of South Bend. A brother, Orville and Pauline Baker, South Bend, survives as well. Other surviving family members are her beloved nephew Dan Gardner and his family of Osceola, a much loved niece, Dawn Brown and her family of Colorado Springs, Colo., other nieces and nephews, including Judy Hite, Plymouth, and four step-sons and their families: Loren and Shirley Nifong, Plymouth; Larry and Sarah Nifong, Walkerton; Ronald and Clare Nifong of Ft. Wayne and Ross Nifong, Plymouth, including fifteen step grandchildren and eleven step great-grandchildren. She was also preceded in death by two brothers, Samuel P. Baker Jr, and Kenneth Baker, along with a sister Clarice Volkman. Friends may celebrate the life of Grace Nifong with her family from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 26, 2001, at the Johnson-Danielson Funeral Home, 1100 N. Michigan St., Plymouth, and for one hour prior to funeral services in the church on Thursday. The Rev. Ross Cook, of Nappanee and Rev. Deb Peterson of the Union Church of the Brethren will officiate at the funeral services in the Union Church of the Brethren, 10483 St. Road 17, Plymouth, at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, Dec. 27, 2001. A graveside burial service will be held at 2:30 p.m. Thursday, in St. Joseph Valley Cemetery, 375 W. Cleveland Road, Granger, Ind. Memorial gifts in Grace’s memory may be given to the Marshall County Hospice or to the Union Church of the Brethren.

Martha G. Barth Ogden
Martha G. Barth Ogden, 96, of 17421 18th Road, died at 6:15 p.m. Saturday, July 14, 2001, in Culver, Indiana. Mrs. Ogden was born September 1, 1904, in Fort Wayne, Indiana, the daughter of William J. Barth, Sr. and Marie Catharinas. She was a graduate of Fort Wayne Art School and attended the Snow Froelich School of Industrial Art in New York, the Chicago School of Art Education and the University of Chicago. From 1924 – 1927, Mrs. Ogden was the art supervisor in Albert Lea, Minnesota. She was an art teacher in South Bend from 1927 – 1930, and then taught in Fort Wayne Junior High School. On June 18, 1936, in Chicago, she married George R. Ogden, who died in 1950. Surviving are one son, George R. Ogden, of Knox, Indiana, one daughter, Martha Ogden Arnold, of Boulder, Colorado, and three grandsons. Three sisters and a brother preceded her in death. Mrs. Ogden had lived in Culver since 1948. For seven years she taught art in area schools until retiring in 1970. She was a world traveler and an avid bird watcher. She was a member of the Culver City Federated Club and the Associate Tri Kappa. There will be no visitation or services. Mrs. Ogden had requested cremation. Contributions may be made to the Culver Union Township Public Library or the Audubon Society.

Marie D. Palumbo
Marie D. Palumbo, 95, who made her home with her daughter and son-in-law, Rosemarie and Walter Wozniak at 10181 Quince Rd., Plymouth, for the past seven years, having lived in Chicago for 88 years, has died. Marie died of natural causes in Miller’s Merry Manor at 1:15 a.m. on Thursday, August 16, 2001. She was born the daughter of Vito and Della Stolfa Altier in Chicago, Ill., on June 19, 1906. She attended Chicago schools. On Nov. 12, 1933, in Chicago, Marie and William J. Palumbo were married. William died on August 10, 1958. A homemaker, Marie loved to cook. She crocheted beautiful handiwork and enjoyed playing bridge and solitaire. She had favorite soap operas she liked to watch. Marie is survived by her daughter Rosemarie and son-in-law, Walter Wozniak, Plymouth, and by a son, William J. and Sue Palumbo, Denver, Colorado, and a daughter-in-law, Sara Palumbo, Scottsdale, Ariz. Called ‘Grammie’ by her seven grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren, she was devoted to them all. They, and many loving nieces and nephews survive as well. Marie was preceded in death by her spouse and by a son, Robert Joseph Palumbo and three brothers: Daniel, Charles and Joseph Altier. A sister, Lucille Lungo, has died also. Visitation with the family to celebrate the life of their beloved mother and grandmother will be from 3 to 7 p.m. on Sunday, August 19, 2001, in the Johnson-Danielson Funeral Home, 1100 N. Michigan St., Plymouth. A prayer service will be held at 7 p.m. in the funeral home. The Mass of Christian Burial for Marie will be at 9 a.m. on Monday, August 20, 2001, in St. Michael’s Roman Catholic Church of which she was a member. Father Tony Gillespie of St. Michael’s will officiate. Also at 1 p.m. on Monday, August 20, a dedication service presided by Darragh Connelly of Ireland will be held in the Queen of Heaven Mausoleum Chapel, 1400 S. Wolf Rd., Hillside, Ill. Entombment will follow in the mausoleum. Memorial gifts in Marie’s memory may be made to the Foundation for Epilepsy or to a charity of the donor’s choice.

James H. “Jim” Phillips
James H. “Jim” Phillips, 124 Shalley Drive, Plymouth, died in St. Joseph Regional Medical Center, Plymouth, at 6:31 a.m. on Wednesday, August 15, 2001. Jim had been a Plymouth resident for the last 20 years coming from Anderson, Ind. He was 48 years old. Born in Seymour, Ind., on Feb. 5, 1953, he was the son of James and Bertha Day Phillips. He graduated from Anderson High School and later attended classes in order to receive his real estate license. On July 26, 1986, in the Pretty Lake Trinity United Methodist Church, Jim and Sharon M. Rowe were married. He worked as an insurance adjuster for a number of years and was also self-employed in construction for many years. Jim liked to hunt and fish and was a member of the Elks’ Lodge in Plymouth. He is survived by his wife, Sharon, Plymouth, and by two sons and two daughters. His sons, both in Plymouth, are Justin Phillips, 12, and Joshua Phillips, 8 years old. His daughters both live in Anderson, Ind. They are: Jamie Newte and her daughter, Jaylynn, and Ginger Phillips. Jim’s mother, Bertha Phillips and two sisters, Judy and Frank Presley and Debbie and Billy Mahoney, all of Anderson, also survive, together with a third sister, Terry Kyle of Moorehaven, Fla. and his mother and father-in-law, Gene and Patty Rowe of Argos, Ind. He was preceded in death by his father. Visitation with the family will be on Friday, August 17, 2001, from 4 to 8 p.m. in the Johnson-Danielson Funeral Home, 1100 N. Michigan St., Plymouth, Indiana. Funeral services on Saturday, August 18, 2001, will be at 10:30 a.m. in the funeral home. Rev. Les Kephart, pastor of the Plymouth Wesleyan Church where Jim attended church, will officiate. Burial will be in New Oakhill Cemetery, Plymouth. Memorial gifts may be made to a charity of the donor's choice.

John B. Reeder Sr.
John B. Reeder Sr., 84, died, after an extended illness, at 2:45 a.m. on Saturday, May 19, 2001, in St. Joseph Regional Medical Center, South Bend. He had made his family’s home at 801 S. Michigan St., Plymouth. John was born on August 9, 1916, in Florence, Alabama, the son of Dr. & Mrs. F. B. Reeder. He graduated from Florence State Teachers College, now the University of North Alabama. He was thought of by his friends as the epitome of a perfect Southern gentleman; he was kind, thoughtful and soft-spoken. He first joined Montgomery Ward at Huntsville, Ala., then serving at Blytheville, Ark., thus beginning a forty-five year period of service with Wards, interrupted only by World War II. He was married on March 28, 1936, in Iuka, Miss., to Kathleen K. Kinnibrugh, the couple were devoted to one another for over sixty-five years. After three years in the United States Navy, serving in the Pacific Theater, he returned to Wards in Paris, Ill., then later to Poplar Bluff, Missouri, and Nashville, Tenn., followed by Bluffton, Marion and Greencastle Indiana stores. After coming to Plymouth in 1956, he requested that no more moves be made. He appreciated the high quality of the schools and other important considerations of life in Plymouth. A highly respected and competent executive, his wishes were honored. He managed the local store for seventeen years until it was closed. John was then transferred to the Grand Rapids, Mich. facility and the Ludington, Mich. store which he managed until he took early retirement in 1979. He and Kathleen then returned to Plymouth, their chosen home. During his life in Plymouth, John was a member of the Kiwanis Club, the Plymouth Kilwinning Masonic Lodge #149, the Scottish Rite Consistory and the Toastmaster’s Club. A member of the First United Methodist Church, he served as a volunteer treasurer for sixteen years. He was an avid reader and interested in the growth of the Plymouth Public Library. The Young Adult Room, a first for Plymouth, will be in the new section of the library and will be named the Susie Reinholt, director of the library said “ we are so grateful. It is so amazing to me, ” she said, “ that the family, in the middle of this very difficult time, thought so much of the community that they wanted to give us all a gift.” In presenting the gift, John’s last statement was that the family wanted to publicly express their appreciation of the quality of life that they have enjoyed in Plymouth. John is survived by his spouse and their two children, a daughter, Ann R. Powell, Indianapolis, Ind., and a son, John B. Reeder, Jr., of Bryan, Texas. Three grandchildren and five great-grandchildren survive as well. His parents and a brother preceded John in death. Friends may visit with the family on Tuesday, May 22, 2001, from 5 to 7 p.m. in the Johnson-Danielson Funeral Home, 1100 N. Michigan St., Plymouth, and on Wednesday, May 23, 2001, from 10 to 11 a.m. in the First United Methodist Church, 400 N. Michigan St., Plymouth. Funeral services, conducted by the Rev. Larry Houseman, pastor of the church, will be held at 11 a.m. following visitation in the church. A burial service will be held at the Maple Hill Cemetery in Huntsville, Alabama at 3 p.m. Friday, May 25, 2001 with Rev. John Johnston officiating. The Spry Funeral Home, 2411 Memorial Parkway NW, Huntsville, Alabama is in charge of local arrangements. Preferred memorials in the memory of John Reeder may be made to the First United Methodist Church or to a charity of the donor’s choice.
