Rose Marie Fox
Rose Marie Fox, 80, formerly of 9680 Union Road, and since 1997, a resident of the Catherine Kasper Home in Donaldson, died, following a lengthy illness at 7:21 p.m. on Monday, May 14, 2001, in the Catherine Kasper Home. Rose was born in Chicago on August 16, 1920, the daughter of Richard and Anna B. Buettner Ehrlicher. She graduated from Chicago’s St. Augustine High School in 1937. On September 13, 1941, in Chicago, Rose and Joseph J. Fox were married. Joseph died on December 22, 1999. A homemaker, Rose operated “God’s Garage Sale” at her home for 25 years. Proceeds benefited the sisters of Ancilla Domini. Her heart and her interests were always with the needy. She enjoyed working with migrant programs and wrapped dozens of Christmas gifts for their children. A devout Roman Catholic, Rose was a member of St. Michael’s Roman Catholic parish. She was a member of Harvest House, an associate member of Ancilla Domini Sisters, St. Vincent’s Aid in Plymouth, and president of the Mother’s Club of Divine Heart Seminary. In Chicago she served as a District Chairman of Our Lady’s Volunteers and Chairman of Spiritual Development and Secretary of St. Anne’s Society. Rose is survived by two sons and a daughter. Her sons are James J. and Judy Fox, Reno, Nevada, and Kenneth J. and Jeanne Fox, South Bend, Ind. Her daughter is Sister Sharon Marie Fox, PHJC, Donaldson. Four grandchildren also survive: Dale Fox and his wife, Kelly, San Leandro, Calif., Kathy Fox, Lafayette, Colorado and Greg and Amanda Fox, South Bend. Two sisters, Ann Lindsey and Betty Rogala, and Richard and Marie Ehrlicher, a brother, all of Chicago, together with several nieces and nephews, survive as well. Rose was preceded in death by her parents, her spouse and two sisters: Marie Schergan and Josephine Ehrlicher. Visitation with the family will be from 3 to 7 p.m. on Thursday, May 17, 2001, at the Catherine Kasper Home in Donaldson. A Vigil Service will be held in the chapel at 7 p.m. The Mass of Christian Burial for Rose will be at 11 a.m. on Friday, May 18, 2001, in the Catherine Kasper Home. Father Edward Konerman, pastor of Ancilla Domini and Father Anthony Gillespie, pastor of St. Michael’s Catholic Church, will officiate. Burial will be at Mt. Carmel Cemetery on the grounds of Ancilla Domini, Donaldson. Memorial gifts in Rose’s memory may be made to the Ancilla Domini Sisters.
Betty Lee Gaza
TYNER - Betty Lee Gaza, 67, formerly of Tyner and South Bend, and most recently a three-year resident of the Mason Health Care facility in Warsaw, died on Wednesday, March 28, 2001. Betty died at 6:47 a.m. in Parkview Hospital, Ft. Wayne, Ind., from complications of pneumonia. She had been ill with Lupus for the past ten years. Born in Delta County, Michigan, on April 7, 1933, Betty was the daughter of Myron and Della Pike Moore. On June 21, 1957, in South Bend, she and Raymond A. Gaza, who died on June 17, 1999, were married. A homemaker, Betty enjoyed planting flowers and was proficient in the arts of knitting and crocheting. Baptized a Roman Catholic, she had attended St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Plymouth. Betty is survived by a daughter, Valerie and her husband Deljon Fisher, Jesse D. Fisher, a grandson, both of Pierceton, Ind., a granddaughter, Sarah E. Fisher and a great-granddaughter, Tylene R. Fisher, both of Newport News, Virginia. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, a brother and a sister. Visitation with the family will be from noon to 2 p.m. on Monday, April 2, 2001, in the Johnson-Danielson Funeral Home, 1100 N. Michigan St., Plymouth. A Rosary service will be held at 1:45 p.m., just prior to a funeral service at 2 p.m., all in the funeral home. The Rev. Father Anthony Gillespie, pastor of St. Michael’s Roman Catholic Church, Plymouth, will officiate. Burial will take place in St. Jacob’s Cemetery, North Judson, Ind. Donna B. “Donnie” Hartz
Donna B. “Donnie” Hartz, 81, died of natural causes at her residence 18195 Hartz Lane, Tippecanoe, Ind., at 12:27 p.m. on Monday, August 27, 2001. Donnie had lived in Tippecanoe since 1970 coming from Osceola, Ind. She was born in Tippecanoe, the daughter of Floyd J. and Nina M. Tippit Creighbaum on September 20, 1919. She graduated from Tippecanoe High School. On July 7, 1945, in Ft. Wayne, Donnie and Ellsworth F. Hartz were married. Ellsworth died on October 9, 1994. Donnie retired from the South Bend Bendix Corp. in 1973, where she had worked in production. Summer was her favorite time of the year. She enjoyed doing yard work and being outdoors. She was a member of the Eagles Auxiliary in Rochester, the Plymouth Chapter of the Women of the Moose # 1355 and the VFW Post 1162 Auxiliary in Plymouth. Donnie is survived by four stepsons. They are: Ellsworth E. Hartz, Jr., Robert L. Hartz, Dale L. Hartz and Richard D. Hartz. Several step-grandchildren and step-great-grandchildren also survive. A sister, Margie and George Schlosser, Argos, two sisters-in-law, Juanita Creighbaum and Wilma Creighbaum, Bourbon, and a number of nieces and nephews survive as well. Donnie was preceded in death by her parents, her husband and three brothers: Dean W., Donald B. and Charles E. Creighbaum. Visitation with the family will be from 5 to 7 p.m. on Thursday, August 30, 2001, in the Johnson-Danielson Funeral Home, 1100 N. Michigan St., Plymouth, Ind. Funeral services will be at 7 p.m., following visitation, in the funeral home. The Rev. Charles Krieg, pastor of the Pretty Lake United Methodist Church, will officiate. Entombment will be in Riverview Cemetery, South Bend. Memorial gifts may be made to the Marshall County Hospice or to a charity of the donor’s choice.
Nina Virginia Hassler
Lifetime Plymouth resident Nina Virginia Hassler, 75, who lived at 16369 Pretty Lake Road, Plymouth, since 1956, died, following a courageous three-year battle with cancer, at 4:50 a.m. on Tuesday, July 3, 2001. Nina died in St. Joseph Regional Medical Center, South Bend, where she had been a patient for three weeks. She was born the daughter of Harvey E. and Alice D. Bolenbaugh Grunawalt on October 1, 1925, in Donaldson, Ind. She graduated from West High School with the class of 1943, and later took business and computer courses at Ancilla College. On July 20, 1945, Nina and Dewey J. Hassler were married in Crown Point, Indiana. Her work career started at the old Glove factory; she later worked at Meck’s, then Schlosser Brothers Creamery-Hawthorne Mellody until its’ closing. She retired in 1990, following ten years of service in the offices of the Del Monte Corp. She loved music, reading the latest fiction books and strolls around Pretty Lake. An accomplished pianist, she played at her church, the Trinity United Methodist, and sometimes she and her daughter, Nancy, would play duets. A fifty-year member of the Trinity United Methodist Church, she was active in the Builders Class and with the United Methodist Church Women, helping with dinners and other projects. A member of the Disabled American Veterans Auxiliary, always concerned for others, she volunteered clerical work for all of the veterans service organizations. She also assisted with her husband at Northern Indiana Legal Services and together they were members of the Michiana Gem and Mineral Society. Nina is survived by Dewey, her spouse of almost 56 years and by their two daughters: Nancy L. and Don Ferris, Plymouth and Nanette L. and Jim Saboski, South Bend. Dicky L. Grunawalt, a brother of Norfolk, Virginia, and several nieces and nephews also survive. She was preceded in death by her parents and by a brother, Gerald Grunawalt, who was killed while in the service of his country in 1944. Visitation with Nina’s family will be from 4 to 8 p.m. on Thursday, July 5, 2001, in the Johnson-Danielson Funeral Home, 1100 N. Michigan St., Plymouth, Ind. Funeral services, conducted by Mike Burroughs of the Trinity United Methodist Church, will be at 11 a.m. on Friday, July 6, 2001, in the funeral home. Burial will be in the Tyner Cemetery, Tyner, Ind. Memorial gifts in Nina’s memory may be made to the Trinity United Methodist Church’s Elevator Fund.
Leah Collins Heiderich
TUCSON, AZ – Memorial services for former Plymouth resident, Leah Collins Heiderich, will be held on Sat. June 9, 2001 at 11 a.m. in the New Oakhill Cemetery Chapel, Plymouth. The Rev. James Campbell will officiate. A time to share with family and friends will take place one half hour prior to services in the chapel. Leah, who was born July 15, 1913 in Wanatah, Ind. to Carroll L. and Nettie Mitzner Pinney, died on Friday, April 6, 2001 at Atria Campana Del Rio, Tucson, a retirement community where she lived. On March 9, 1940 she married John B. Collins of Peotone, Ill. He died Aug. 12, 1984. She then married Ronald Heiderich on July 15, 1992. He preceded her in death on Dec. 11, 1998. Leah graduated from Riley High School in South Bend and Butler University in Indianapolis. She was a teacher at Webster and West Elementary Schools in Plymouth from 1961 to 1965. Survivors include two daughters, Kathleen Collins Orey and Mary Virginia Collins Huffman of Tucson; four granddaughters; eight great-grandchildren and a sister, Betty Lou Laramore of Plymouth. She was preceded in death by a daughter, Maureen Collins Sapp on April 20, 1970, and two brothers, Wilbur and Donald Pinney. Memorial gifts in Leah’s memory may be given to the American Heart Association or the Masonic Learning Center for Children, 427 N. Main St., South Bend, Indiana 46601. Bob Hileman
Bob Hileman, 79, former athletic director of Plymouth High School, died, in the loving company of his family, at 2:15 a.m. Thursday morning at his home, 1401 Lake Avenue. He had been ill for a number of months. Jack Edison, head PHS basketball coach, worked for Hileman for twenty years. “Bob had a total commitment to his family and his school, ” Edison said. “A tireless worker, he took care of all the minute details. “Whatever respect Plymouth athletics have earned must be attributed to Bob Hileman’s leadership.” Bob was born in Michigan City, the son of Harve and Martha Peo Hileman, on April 2, 1922. The family moved to Plymouth when he was eight years old. He attended Washington Elementary and graduated from Lincoln High School in 1940, where he was an outstanding basketball player, scoring over 120 points in both his junior and senior years. He also played football, was class president and was involved in the school drama productions. Bob was at Butler University for two years. When World War II erupted, he enlisted in the United States Air Force, spending three and one-half years serving his country, a year of that on Saipan Island in the South Pacific. On his return from the service, he re-entered Butler and graduated in 1948, with a Bachelor of Science degree in Education. He later earned a master’s degree from Indiana University and a Supervisor of Guidance certificate from Purdue University. Bob and Marian V. Furry were married at her home near Plymouth on June 6, 1947. His first teaching job was at Logansport’s Franklin Elementary School. He then moved to Argos High School where he was a teacher and coach for seven years. In 1957, he came back to Plymouth High School as a teacher and coach. He served as Athletic Director at Plymouth High School for 24 years, 1962 to 1986. Bob was instrumental in founding the Northern Lakes Conference and maintaining its current competitive status. During his tenure as AD, in addition to all of the girls’ sports, he was instrumental in adding swimming, wrestling, golf, tennis and soccer. He was an ardent supporter of Plymouth athletics and followed them faithfully. He loved all sports and was, in particular, a Chicago Cub fan. He enjoyed his grandchildren’s sporting events and other activities. He liked to read and work various types of puzzles. Since the early 50s, the family has attended Trinity United Methodist Church. He served as a director in the Indiana High School Athletic Directors Association and was a member of the National Educational Association and the Indiana State Teacher’s Association. He was a former president of the Marshall County Coaches Association and was on the North Central Evaluating Committee. Civic-minded, Bob was a Summer Recreation Director, had assisted with Special Olympics programs, and A.A.U. swim events. He chaperoned at Boy Scout Camps and assisted in community sponsored athletic programs. Bill Nixon said that Bob Hileman had influenced his life in many ways. “ I remember him as a coach. I remember him as my boss when I was a coach. When I became Assistant Athletic Director, he taught me the ins and outs of being an A.D. Without his help, ” Nixon continued, “I would have been lost when I became A.D. “Most importantly, I remember how well he treated me and how patient he was with me. “He was truly a nice man.” Bob is survived by his loving wife, Marian, a son David L. Hileman and two daughters and their families, all of Plymouth. They are: Linda S. and Larry Mann and their son, Eric: Judy K. and Mike Delp and their children Erica, Michael and Adam. A daughter, Karen A. Erbse, died on January 3, 2001. Her two children are Andy and Betsy Erbse. In addition to Karen, Bob was preceded in death by his parents and a granddaughter, Krista Delp. Two brothers, Howard and Russell Hileman and a sister, Lois Coote have also died. Visiting with the family will be on Saturday, May 12, 2001, from 3 to 8 p.m. at the Johnson- Danielson Funeral Home, 1100 N. Michigan St., Plymouth. Funeral services will take place at 3 p.m. on Sunday, May 13, 2001, in the funeral home. The Rev. Maurice Grindle, pastor of the Trinity United Methodist Church will officiate. Burial will be in New Oakhill Cemetery, Plymouth. Memorial gifts may be given in Bob Hileman’s memory to the Trinity United Methodist Church or the Marshall County Hospice.
